Dr Sa'ari (right) and Bentayan assemblyman Richard Lau showing the design plan of the Maharani Walk project.
MUAR: A stretch of Jalan Maharani here will be turned into a beautifully landscaped riverfront walkway with recreational park by August next year.
Muar municipal council president Dr Sa’ari Mohd Nooh said the RM2.1mil project had started early this month and urged local residents to be patient with the construction works.
He said the riverfront between the town bridge and the new Mara complex near the Harbour Master’s office would have some heavy construction activities soon.
“The state government first planned to turn Jalan Abdullah into a pedestrian walkway about five years ago but scrapped it later due to several problems.
“It then looked at Jalan Maharani which is located along Sungai Muar and decided to turn the road into the Maharani Walk,” he told reporters at his office last week.
Dr Sa’ari said the National Landscape Department then carried out studies on the project and in 2003 submitted a design to the state government for approval.
He said the design covered the whole stretch of Jalan Maharani up to Jalan Othman near the Muar police station and would come to a total of over RM11mil.
However, due to limited funds, he said the department decided to develop a stretch of the road near the town bridge as its first phase before extending it up to Jalan Othman.
Besides beautifying the stretch of Jalan Maharani and a recreational park, he said the project also included fountains, a pavilion, an esplanade along the riverbank and an information booth.
Dr Sa'ari said the booth would provide information and location of governmentoffices, shopping areas, historical sites and popular eateries.
“We have Sungai Muar passing by the town and we want to capitalise on its beauty as well as make the town more attractive to visitors.
“The park will be ideal for local residentswho want to spend qua-lity time with their families and for Tai-Chi sessions ,” he added.

cleaning the beach at the Muar River estuary recently.
MUAR: The Pioneer Technology Sdn Bhd electronic company at Tanjung Agas here has become a pioneer firm in the district to undertake a river-cleaning project.
The company, along with Southern Waste Management, Muar Golf Club and the municipal council pooled their resources to remove garbage and floating debris at the Muar River estuary recently.
The three-hour river cleaning operation involved more than 300 people; with Pioneer Technology contributing 200 of the workers.
Council president Dr Sa’ari Mohd Nooh said it was the first time a giant electronic company in Muar carried out a river cleaning project.
He said Pioneer Technology, which led the operation, managed to engage Southern Waste Management and Muar Golf Club in the project.
Speaking to participants of the project near Tanjung Emas here, he said the council was grateful to all parties for their commitment in wanting to clean Sungai Muar.
He said the river, which stretched to Negri Sembilan before joining a tributary of Sungai Pahang, was a popular waterway for traders during the 16th and 17th centuries.
“However, the river's popularity dropped with the opening of new settlements along coastal areas and the coming of bigger vessels trading in the region.
“Over the years, uncontrolled developments in the hinterland has caused pollution of the river,” he said.
Earlier, Pioneer Technology director Shigeyoshi Okubo said the project was undertaken to support the Government’s call to maintain and preserve natural resources.
He said the project marked the company’s commitment to environment-related programmes and more activities would be carried out the around Tanjung Emas area soon.
“We hope members of the public as well as visitors to Tanjung Emas will help preserve the idyllic beauty of the environment by maintaining cleanliness in the area,” he added.

Muar Pekan Rabu Complex along Sungai Muar.
MUAR: The tallest building here, which used to belong to and also housed the Pagoh Umno division office, will soon become a popular commercial and hotel complex.
The 11-storey building, built when former Johor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Othman Saat was the division’s chief, has been bought over by a company and has been renamed Muar Trade Centre.
The complex had been renovated and redesigned, turning the six upper floors into a hotel and the lower floors for commercial use, said Muar Trade Centre director K.C Lim.
He said the hotel, called the Muar Traders’ Hotel, provided 66 spacious standard rooms and deluxe rooms, besides 16 executive apartments.
He said the hotel, located between the District Office building and the Muar Pekan Rabu complex along Sungai Muar, offered a panoramic view of the waterway, including the estuary.
He said the hotel, managed by Actitage Sdn Bhd, was not aimed at competing with other hotels in the town but to provide visitors, especially those from outside the district, with more choices of accommodation, adding that it was also a preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2007.
Lim said the five lower floors would not only house shops and restaurants, there would also be offices, adding that, the complex would be a new commercial landmark for the town.
He said there would be a banquet hall catering for up to 600 guests on the second floor and an exhibition centre on the third floor.
Those who want to know more about the Muar Traders’ Hotel or the centre can visit the website at www.muartadershotel.com or call 06-9538100 or 06-9539100.

MUAR: The Muar Municipal Council has allocated cash aid totalling nearly RM110,000 to needy families and students living in Bandar Maharani here.
The aid to meet educational, medical and health needs was allocated by the Housing and Local Government Ministry to about 55 families with income below RM600 per month.
Maharani assemblyman Datuk Mohd Ismail Mohd Shah said it was the first time those living in towns and earning below RM600 per month had been categorised as urban poor.
“All the while, the Government has been focusing on helping needy and poor people who earn less than RM350 a month in rural areas,” he said after presenting the aid to the 55 families recently.
Mohd Ismail said these urban poor people, although they had steady jobs, lived in hardship, as they had to pay for almost everything, including fares for school buses for their children.
Earlier, council president Abdul Razak Salleh said the council, as well as the District Office, Religious Department and Welfare Department had been directed to identify such families.
He said many urban poor people did not know about the aid and urged department heads, political and community leaders to spread the word to them.
“Those who are sick or suffering from renal problems and need dialysis treatment will also be provided for,” he added.

MUAR: A RM70,000 jetty has been built in Kampung Pengkalan Kota.
The jetty was constructed to replace the previous one that collapsed into Sungai Muar in February.
Village head Anuar Hamzah said the riverbank, which was badly damaged and eroded near the jetty, was also reinforced with boulders and concrete.
He said the cost of strengthening the riverbank was about RM90,000 and the villagers, especially fishermen, were grateful to the Government for the project.
“We want to thank Bukit Serampang assemblyman Tahir Taat and Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for their speedy response in replacing the collapsed jetty,” he said in Kampung Pengkalan Kota recently.
Meanwhile, fish breeder Yunos Kassim said the reinforcement would prevent erosion along the stretch and protect the jetty.
He said, besides the jetty and the riverbank reinforcement projects, the Government had allocated RM50,000 to villagers to rear fish in cages in the river.
“We have received about 32 cages and have set them up in the river and now await the Fisheries Department to supply us with fish fry.
“We plan to rear patin, tilapia, baung and lampam in the cages,” he added.

MUAR: The Bakri Umno division is set to have its own building strategically located near the Jalan Bakri – Jalan Arab junction here in the next two years.
Division chief Datuk Abdullah Ali said the party had designed a four-storey complex, which would also house about 13 shop lots besides the division’s office.
He said the division had submitted the plan of the complex, estimated to cost RM4.2mil, to the Muar municipal council.
“Members have been wanting the division to have a building of its own and their dream will soon become a reality.
“The division was allotted the site several years ago but only managed to pay the premium to the state government recently,” he said here recently.
Abdullah said since the complex was located in town, the shop lots would be rented out to generate revenue for the party.
He said the division office which now operates at a shop lot in Kampung Pesta Bakri would cover one floor of the complex.
He also said Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman was briefed on the project during the division’s Hari Raya Puasa gathering recently and had given the nod for the complex.

KUALA LUMPUR: Hektar Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) has acquired a shopping complex and hotel tower, together with a basement car park, in Muar, Johor, from Wetex Realty Sdn Bhd.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia yesterday, Hektar REIT said the property was acquired for a total RM117.5mil and it would enter into a lease-back arrangement with Wetex in respect to the hotel.
The 10-year lease term shall commence on the date of completion of the sale and purchase agreement with an option for the renewal of the lease for a further 10 years from the 10th anniversary of the lease commencement date, it said in the statement.
The rationale for the acquisition of the property and the lease back of the hotel was yield accretion to Hektar REIT and would provide for an expected increase in income for the financial year ending Dec 31 (FY08), it said.

MUAR: The Muar riverbank in Panchor, which collapsed last week, will be rebuilt and strengthened.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is Pagoh MP, said RM9 million had been approved for the project.
The International Trade and Industry Minister, who visited the town Saturday, said work would begin after technical studies and design of the project was completed.
In the meantime, the Public Works Institute (Ikram) would carry out soil stability studies around the riverbank and the rebuilding works would be based on its report.

MUAR: The Sungai Muar riverbank in Panchor town that collapsed a week ago will be strengthened at a cost of RM9mil.
Pagoh MP Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he hoped the funds approved by the Natural Resource and Environment Ministry on April 24 would be adequate to rebuild the riverbank.
“I hope the repair works can start soon for the benefit of people and traders in the area,” he said after visiting the area on Saturday.
Muhyiddin, who is also International Trade and Industry Minister, said the RM500,000 approved by the state for the repair work would be used to beautify the landscape.
During the incident, shoppers and night market traders in the area ran for their lives when the riverbank collapsed with 10 vehicles slowly slipping into the river.
No casualties were reported as those affected managed to recover their vehicles. – Bernama

BANGUNAN Kastam Diraja Muar hampir menjangkau usia 100 tahun.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MAHKAMAH Tinggi Muar.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

thank you in advance... :)
Vince June 14th, 2008, 03:51 AM ace4, from JB, take the NS Expressway and exit at the Tangkak or Yong Peng exit, and follow the "Muar" sign after that until u reach the town. If you prefer to take in the sights of the old trunk road, just drive from JB to Kulai and follow the highway till u reach the open market town of Air Hitam. Here there are 2 routes you can take. Left takes u to Muar via Batu Pahat (a big town too). Left would take you to Muar via Yong Peng (teeny town).
If you are taking the express bus, go to Larkin Bus Terminal. Here, take any buses that go to Muar. Muar's bus terminal is right in the town centre.

MUAR: Thousands of villagers along the Muar-Batu Pahat road want the Government to revive construction of three bridges that had been abandoned for two years.
The villagers, headed by Muar PAS division chief Abu Bakar Mohd Lajat, claimed that the uncompleted bridge projects posed a danger to road users.
About 50 accidents have occurred at the junction of Kampung Parit Jamil, Kampung Parit Bulat and Semerah in the past year.
“We have asked the Government to speed up construction as the bridge projects were supposed to be completed last year.
“However, the authorities only put up signboards near the sites saying a new contractor would be appointed to complete the project,” he told reporters in Kampung Parit Jamil yesterday.

Unhappy lot: Villagers gathering at the abandoned bridge near Kampung Parit Jamil in Muar yesterday. They want the Government to revive construction of three bridges in the area.
Abu Bakar said most of the crashes were due to slippery metal sheets that were laid on the ground to allow people to use the bridge as a temporary measure.
Former Sungai Balang assemblyman Zakariah Mahadi said the delayed projects were dangerous and also showed the Government’s inconsideration.
“We want the Government to complete the projects quickly before someone gets killed,” he said.

It used to be a centre for sports championships, especially inter-school competitions at district and state levels, organised by the Schools Sports Council.
The stadium was also the training ground for local athletes who represented their schools, district or state.
But that was in the past. The stadium is now deserted and no one is interested in using it anymore, due to its dilapidated condition and ill-managed facilities.
The track, for one, has been in damaged condition since a big-wheel motor parade was organised several years ago. Despite rumours that an allocation of funds to restore the stadium to its previous glory was available, hardly any sign of improvement has taken place.
Fifty-year-old resident Azmi Khalid said the stadium was once a favourite place for the community to do their workout. However, he said the place was now quiet as the facilities could no longer be utilised properly.
"I believe it requires a substantial amount of funds to fix the facilities. But something must be done to prevent it from rotting."
Another resident, Norhayati Enjah, 43, said the stadium's use was no longer endorsed, unlike her school days when many sporting and other events were held there.
She said repairs that were not carried out on time had resulted in rising maintenance costs, and that the outdated amenities were no longer suitable for athletes' training.
Bank officer Tono Hassan shared the view that the stadium facilities needed upgrading. He also supported the idea that more activities should be organised at the stadium once it is fixed.
"Rather than leaving it to ruin, we might as well repair it. We don't want another wasted project around."

Upgrading works: Lee (left) checking a drain being
upgraded in Jalan Ali, Bentayan constituency, recently.
MUAR: Several stretches of drains in Bentayan constituency here will be upgraded to solve the flooding problem faced by residents.
The project, costing nearly RM4mil, will involve drains in Bandar Maharani and several housing areas along Jalan Salleh, Jalan Haji Jaib and Jalan Bakri.
Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman’s special officer in change of the constituency, Chris Lee, said he had submitted proposals for the projects to the Housing and Local Government Ministry earlier this year.
“Some projects have been approved and some are in the process of being awarded to eligible contractors.
“We hope the projects, which include widening and deepening of drains, will resolve the flooding problem here,” he said when checking on work in Jalan Ali here recently.
Lee said, besides the drains, a stretch of Sungai Bentayan from the estuary to Jalan Bakri would be deepened and widened to speed up water flow from the town into Sungai Muar.
He said the town and surrounding housing schemes had poor drainage systems and indiscriminate dumping of rubbish into the drains made matter worse.
He said he planned to organise talks with residents to instill awareness against such dumping, which not only caused the drains to clog but also turned them into mosquito-breeding areas.
He said he also had applied for allocations to improve stretches of roads and back lanes in several housing schemes along Jalan Bakriah, Jalan Salleh, Jalan Haji Jaib and Jalan Bakri.
“We have applied for about RM25,000 in allocations to install street lights in Kampung Sabak Awor and Jalan Daud to brighten the areas at night,” he added.

Sate, mi bandung, Gunung Ledang serlah imej Bandar Maharani

BELAYAR menyusuri Sungai Muar amat menyeronokkan.
Pelbagai bangunan lama termasuk Masjid Jamek Sultan Abu Bakar, Bangunan Sultan Abu Bakar, Kubu Bentayan, Bangunan Kastam Diraja, Mahkamah Tinggi/Sesyen, Pejabat Cawangan Polis Trafik Muar dan Sekolah Tinggi Muar masih terpelihara.

CHOICE SITE: The second clock tower at Tanjung Emas square.
BANDAR Maharani (literally the Queen’s town) in Muar has created local history of sorts with its fast development. A reminder of this is seen in the town’s three clock towers within a distance of 1.6km along the estuary.
The first clock tower was built in 1909 at the Royal Customs and Excise building.
Within the past three years, the Muar Municipal Council built the second clock tower in the town square at Tanjung Emas and the third at the recreational garden at Padang Nyiru, near the Sultan Ismail bridge.
The projects have caused much excitement, Bandar Maharani, which was once dubbed the pensioners’ town, does not really need so many clock towers.
However, some local residents concur that the clock towers are necessary to remind them to make more concerted efforts to transform the town into a riverine city.
Muar is no more a pensioners’ town or a sleepy hollow based on the rapid development in the last 50 years.
It has many luxury bungalows, comfortable apartments and three bridges across the Muar river.
To date, the tallest skyscraper in the town is the 17-storey Pangsapuri Maharani City Tower at Jalan Sulaiman.
Other impressive buildings are the 14-storey Pemandang Tanjung condominium at Jalan Junid, the 12-storey Muar Trade Centre (former Umno Pagoh division headquarters) at Jalan Petri Pangsapuri Intan at Jalan Haji Jaib, the eight- storey condominium Ruby at Jalan Sungai Abong, the five-storey Wisma 2020 at Jalan Sulaiman, Pangsapuri Indah at Jalan Salleh, Pangsapuri Emas at Jalan Sakih and the four- storey Pangsapuri Mutiara at Jalan Abdul Rahman.
The bridges across the Muar river are the Tanjung Agas-Bandar Maharani, Panchor-Grisik and Parit Bunga-Sabak Awor.
I disagree that Bandar Maharani has too many clock towers as each has its peculiar purpose.
The one at the Royal Customs and Excise building is a historic relic reminiscing the roaring trade in the port of call in 1909.
The second clock tower at Tanjung Emas square is to remind those participating in major events like Merdeka Day celebrations, official ceremonies and gatherings to be punctual.
The third at the Sultan Ismail bridge is the town’s landmark to notify tourists they have crossed Muar river into Bandar Maharani.
The second clock tower, completed in 2006 includes a stage for cultural shows, traditional arches, a tall flag post and a paved square to accommodate 6,000 people.
The project, which is strategically situated at the estuary of the Muar river facing the Straits of Malacca, also provides a spacious parking area and a 500-metre jogging track where visitors and tourists are able to view the beautiful river, Pulau Besar and the legendary Gunung Ledang.
It also provides the platform for them to watch the sunrise and sunset.
It has since become a choice site for manufacturers and traders to organise factory sales, trade fairs and exhibitions to enable consumers to buy products at cheaper rates direct from the factories.
The third clock tower, completed in June this year, includes a mini Roman Colosseum, a neatly manicured lawn, a pavement under leafy trees, a fountain, a dome-shaped pavilion, parking bays and a beautifully-designed seawall.
It also provides a green lung for more than 30,000 town folk to take leisurely walks and enjoy the natural beauty of the Muar river.
The garden immortalises the old days when the site was a busy trading centre where junks and boats anchored with merchandise and charcoal and ringing with the joy and laughter of the coolies who toiled hard day and night.
I admit the three clock towers face frequent mechanical problems. The clock at the Customs and Excise building has been out of order for years, the one at Tanjung Emas only works when there is a gathering and the third at the town centre occasionally fails and at times does not show the accurate time.
It is not unusual for the clocks to stop when there is a power break-down.
Nevertheless, the council takes all measures to ensure the town’s clocks function normally at all times.
nazrey December 10th, 2008, 01:54 AM Exotic fish species being bred in Muar
Wednesday December 10, 2008
By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH
MUAR: This district is set to become a major producer of freshwater fish species like the Malayan masher or kelah, wild carp or kerai, and ikan tengas soon.
Muar Umno division chief Datuk Mohd Ismail Mohd Shah has set up a farm in Kampung Parit Limbong to breed these exotic fish species for commercial purposes.
He said the species, brought from Perak and Kelatan, were being bred in an enclosure with 10 concrete pools for fries and four pools for adult fishes.
“I decided to breed these species after being informed that they were highly sought after by freshwater fish lovers.
“I bought some adult fishes and after finding out they adapted well in my pools, I started buying fries from breeders in Perak and Kelantan, he said in an interview recently.
Mohd Ismail said there were three species of kelah — kelah emas, kelah bara and kelah biru — and kelah bara was the most expensive.
He said that many thought the kelah was the best of Malaysian freshwater fishes, but tengas, especially tengas emas, was more delicious.
He said these fishes, which swam wild in creeks and streams on mountain ranges in the Belum forest in Perak and in Ulu Kelantan, were facing extinction.
This was because of uncontrolled logging which caused erosion and polluted the streams, he said.
There were also errant fishermen who strung nets in the streams to catch the fish for sale to restaurants, he added.
“Since they are highly sought after, I decided to breed them to also prevent them from extinction, he said.
Meanwhile, Mohd Ismail’s wife Datin Salamah Sabtu said she preferred to breed Japanese carp and the koi fish.
“I love them and we have some that are tame,” she said, adding that she loved to hand-feed the fishes.

Abdul Rahman berkata, Jalan Haji Abu memiliki keistimewaannya yang tersendiri kerana bukan sahaja mampu menarik pelancong tempatan, malah pelancong luar negara.

rizalhakim February 3rd, 2009, 05:46 AM Reflecting Muar’s historic charm
Story and photos by ZAZALI MUSA
OLD buildings in the coastal river town of Muar in northwestern Johor are a priceless heritage and definitely an attraction.
They may not be historically famous like those in Georgetown and Malacca, which were accorded World Heritage Site status by Unesco on July 7, 2008.
Nonetheless, they reflect the town’s prosperous past and splendour and make interesting subjects for photographers, history buffs, visitors and architecture students.

In good use: The Sultan Abu Bakar Building now houses the Muar Land Office and District Office.
Muar’s name originates from the Malay word muara or estuary.
History shows that Sultan Abu Bakar named it Bandar Maharani or Empress Town in 1884 after his consort Sultanah Fatimah.
Unlike today’s structures, it is easy to identify the buildings of yesteryears as the dates of completion are visible on the exterior.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/2/2/southneast/se_06jlnmaharani.jpg
Outstanding:Well-preserved pre-war building in Jalan Maharani dominate in Muar's architecture.
Most of the buildings feature neo-classical and Georgian designs popular in 19th-century Europe, the United States and British colonies.
High ceilings, verandas, columns, arches, striped walls, louvre windows panels, decorative plaster and balustrades are common features of buildings of that circa.
Although most of them are of colonial design, the architects included Chinese, Indian and Malay motifs to adapt the designs to local culture.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/2/2/southneast/se_06jlnmejidi.jpg
Still vibrant: The Sultan Abu Bakar Building in Jalan Mejidi is a replica of the Grand Palace in Johor Baru.
Rows of well-preserved pre-war buildings in Jalan Abdullah, Jalan Maharani and Jalan Sulaiman add colour to the streets as the buildings dominate as far as the town’s architecture is concerned.
Standing proudly in Jalan Bentayan next to Wisma Kim are two Chinese pre-war houses adorned with intricate plaster stucco designs on the façade and tiles of Anglo-Saxon influence.
The Royal Customs and Excise building built in 1909 in Jalan Maharani was once an important landmark.
The back of the building that faces Muar River served as a landing port and was part of a railway network linking Jalan Sulaiman in Bandar Maharani and Sungai Pulai over a distance of 22.5km.

Standing tall: A view of Muar from the northern bank of River in Tanjung Agas.
Not many are aware that Muar was served by its own railway network known as Muar State Railways (MSR).
MSR operated from 1889 to 1925 and started just four years after the first railway line of the country from Taiping to Port Weld in Perak was inaugurated in 1885.
It facilitated the transportation of people and kampung products from surrounding villages to Malacca and Singapore via the port.
The service dwindled after the opening of Jalan Abdul Rahman in 1918 linking the town and Parit Jawa.
MSR came to an end in 1925.
Muar High School was founded in 1902 as a government English school.
Construction of the colonial-style building in Jalan Meriam started in 1904 and was completed in 1915.
It is among the oldest schools in Johor and has produced many famous names including former Johor Mentri Besar the late Tan Sri Osman Saat, International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.
Construction of Sultan Ibrahim Jamek Mosque on the Muar riverbank in Jalan Petri was begun in 1920 and completed in 1927 at a cost of RM10,000.
It is noted for its four-storey minaret in its backyard and a worship place that depicts European-classical and Islamic architectural influences.
Passers-by in Jalan Mejidi will not miss the Sultan Abu Bakar building (built in 1921) as it is a replica of the Istana Besar or Grand Palace of Johor Baru, which is now the Johor Royal Museum.
It houses the Muar Land Office and District Office.
Three double-storey link houses in Jalan Othman built in 1928 with Dutch architecture stand in stark contrast to their surroundings.
nazrey April 16th, 2009, 10:54 AM Expert: Muar has the potential to hold F3000 powerboat racing
By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH
Thursday April 16, 2009
MUAR: A Formula 3000 (F3000) powerboat racing promoter plans to turn the Muar estuary here into a popular racing arena.
Robert Fernandez, from Aquatech Marine Sdn Bhd in Kuala Lumpur, said the estuary, with Dataran Tanjung Emas nearby, was suitable for such events.
Speaking to The Star, he said the vast estuary with constant tidal and river currents was a challenging place for powerboat races.
“We have carried out studies on currents at the estuary and noted that it is a good for powerboat races.
“With Dataran Tanjung Emas and its esplanade lining the river bank, the estuary can become a popular place for F3000 races,” he said in an interview.
Fernandez, his son Kane and Awang Bara, a powerboat racer from Kuala Terengganu, recently demonstrated the thrills of F3000 powerboat racing at the estuary.
He said the demonstration was to encourage authorities in the district, especially the Muar Municipal Council, to organise powerboat races.
He said the estuary and the recreational facilities at Dataran Tanjung Emas should be used to attract visitors and one way was to have water-related sports.
Meanwhile, AZ Marine boat services operator Zaidi Khamis said he supported the plan to make the Muar estuary a racing spot for F3000 powerboats.
He added that, several years ago, he had organised such a race at the estuary with 20 powerboat racers from all over the country to introduce the sport here.
“But, sad to say, no department or company has shown interest in organising F3000 racing.
“It is expensive and I cannot afford to organise it alone,” he said, hoping that some government bodies would sponsor F3000 races in Muar.
rizalhakim June 5th, 2009, 09:30 AM Bukit Pasir to have landscaped business centre
By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH
MUAR: Petty traders and hawkers in Bukit Pasir near here will soon have a modern, neat and landscaped business centre to sell food, fruits and other local produce.
The Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has agreed to a request by Muar Municipal Council to set up such a place here.
The centre’s design prepared by ARM Consulting Engineers Sdn Bhd was presented to the Deputy Premier recently.
After looking at the design with six shop lots, Muhyiddin said he wanted the council to include more shop lots.
“We want to give opportunities to more traders and entrepreneurs and will look into the costs.
“The council’s plan includes a community hall, but we have a plan to build a RM3mil multi-purpose hall in Bukit Pasir,” he said during a visit to Bukit Pasir.
Muhyiddin said, since the area would have a new hall, the site for the proposed hall could be used for more shop lots.
He said the council had requested a RM4mil allocation for the project which would include a two-storey office block.
On the multi-purpose hall, he said the state would identify a suitable 1ha site in Bukit Pasir for the project.
“All in the Pagoh parliamentary constituency, except Bukit Pasir, have multi-purpose halls which residents use for social gatherings and indoor sports,” he added.
nazrey June 10th, 2009, 06:24 AM RM200m for Sg Muar flood mitigation project
Wednesday June 10, 2009
SEGAMAT: The first phase of the Sungai Muar flood mitigation project to address flood problems in Segamat needs RM200mil, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Douglas Unggah Embas.
The amount does not include the RM11mil already spent for a study carried out on the proposed project. The study was conducted by a consultant appointed by the Drainaage and Irrigation Department (DID).
Unggah said the components involved in the proposed flood mitigation project would include the building of a retention pond and a 1.5km channel to divert water from Sungai Segamat to Sungai Genuang.
“If the federal government approves the fund, we will start the project under the 10th Malaysia Plan to overcome flood problems in Segamat town and the surrounding areas which have been badly affected by the floods in 2006,” he told a press conference after being briefed on the proposed project by DID Flood Mitigation director Zainorrahim Rahim here recently.
DID is also conducting studies on a similar project to overcome flood problems at Sungai Batu Pahat, Mersing, Sungai Johor, Sungai Kluang and the Iskandar Development Region, he said.

rizalhakim June 24th, 2009, 04:15 AM RM15mil worth of development projects in Bukit Naning
MUAR: More than RM15mil of development projects are being implemented in the Bukit Naning constituency in the Bakri parliamentary area.
Its assemblyman Datuk Abdullah Ali said the projects included, among others, new mosques, bridges, village and plantation roads, multi-purpose halls and sports facilities.
“Two new mosque projects in the constituency alone cost nearly RM6mil while two multi-purpose halls costing RM1mil,” he told reporters recently.
Some of the important projects, such as bridges and village roads, had been completed recently while the others would be built soon.
Giving details: Abdullah describing the design of a new multipurpose hall in Kampung Air Hitam now under construction
For the RM2mil mosque project in Air Hitam, Abdullah said existing building would have to be demolished first.
Abdullah added the present mosque, built in 1980s, had cracks on some of the walls and on the floor, adding these cracks posed danger to villagers.
The land in most parts of Air Hitam and Bukit Naning were peat soil. Buildings, especially those with weak pilings would be damaged after some years.
However, Abdullah said the new mosque project, as well as other buildings planned in the area would have strong piling system.
Abdullah added the Government also gave substantial allocation for the upgrading of roads in the villages and the plantation areas.
“We urge the people here to utilise and take good care of every public building,” he added.

Majlis Perbandaran Muar perlu pantau elak kesesakan lalu lintas
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3635/3662198064_5fde42aaed_o.jpg
RUANG meletak bas menjadi sempit kerana digunakan pemandu persendirian.

THE Muar Municipal Council's first tourism brochure is expected to hit the streets soon. Council president Abdul Wahab Ridwan said the final draft is undergoing fine-tuning before being sent to the printer this month.
http://www.nst.com.my/JohorBuzz/Tuesday/Stories/2595368/insidepix1
A sample of the council’s tourism brochure that will be distributed for free.
"I want the booklet to be comprehensive and contain all information that tourists need. I am open to views and suggestions to add more places of interest," he said.
The brochure, which will be given free, would contain information on accommodation, history, culture, buildings, eateries, sightseeing venues and fishing spots in Muar.
Some of Muar's culinary delights that will be featured include ikan asam pedas, otak-otak, mee rebus and mee bandung.
The interesting activities recommended are a visit to the Parit Tiram oyster fishing village and firefly homes, a boat ride to Pulau Besar and a trip to the legendary Gunung Ledang.
Wahab said Muar's attractions and achievements like having the most number of migratory birds stopping by, being a top furniture exporter, and its stunning lion and dragon dances would also be highlighted.
He said a steady flow of tourists to Johor, in particular Muar, would bring in a new source of revenue to offset the current global economic slowdown.
The council's tourism committee would also look into the proposals by Chris Lee Ching Yong, the special officer appointed by Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman to build replicas of the Lesser Adjutant stork (Leptoptilos javanicus) and the Chinese egret (egretta eulophotes) at its migratory site in Parit Jawa.
"Replicas of the lion and dragon dance and a furniture village will also be erected in town.
"Muar has so much to offer and the council is making every effort to make the town a 'must' visit tourist destination," he said.

By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH
MUAR: Love for heritage prompted a businessman here to convert a row of seven run-down shop houses into a new landmark for this town.
The seven shops, built before the First World War and located along Jalan Ali here, have been given a massive facelift and renovated to become a 45-room budget hotel.
Leong Hup Holdings executive director Tan Sri Francis Lau, who decided to buy the row of dilapidated buildings and turned it into a hotel, called it the Streetview Hotel.
The Lau family bought the buildings due to their historical significance and beautiful designs in the houses, said Lau at the opening of the hotel last week.
“We want to preserve the houses as a reminder of the gold old days and recall the times we walked down the street here,” he said at the hotel opening by Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim last Thursday.
Razali commended the Lau family for their passion in wanting to protect and preserve the town’s historical landscape.
He added Muar had many old buildings which should be preserved. He urged for more efforts to protect such places.

Friday October 30, 2009
MUAR: Police have deployed a mobile unit in town to strengthen its crime prevention team.
Muar police chief ACP Mohammed Nasir Ramli said the unit would be stationed in a different strategic location every day.
“It will be manned by three policemen. Anyone who needs to lodge a police report can do so at the mobile unit,” he said.
“Although we have beefed up our manpower in town here, we still need the public’s co-operation in fighting crime,” he added.
ACP Mohammed Nasir was speaking reporters at his office on Monday.
On the war against snatch thieves, he said eight of them had been detained under the Emergency (Public Order and Prevention of Crime) Ordinance while 10 others were charged in court this year.
He said police also arrested about 50 snatch thieves and solved most of the snatch theft cases.
“We arrested a man on Oct 19 who admitted to committing 13 snatch thefts since December 2008.
The man, aged 29, was arrested following a snatch theft report lodged against him on Oct 10, he told reporters on Monday.
ACP Mohammed Nasir said investigation showed the man had in possession some RM8,000 in cash, jewellery and cellphones.
He added that the man and his 25-year-old wife, who was also arrested, were drug addicts but police had to release the woman as she was not involved in the thefts.

Yiswaree Palansamy 2010/02/04
THE administration office of the Road and Transport Department (RTD) in Sungai Abong in Muar which was badly damaged in a blaze will be demolished to make way for a new building for the department.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said the construction of the new RM5 million building is to enable staff of the department to carry out their daily duties in comfort as well as to ensure excellent service for the public. He said the present building was nearly 30 years old and its electrical wiring systems had been certified unsafe.
Abdul Rahim said the department would also prepare an in-depth report on the fire.
"The report should be ready before the construction of the new building," he said after a recent visit to the site of the badly damaged building.
Also present were Johor RTD director Rosli Ramli, Muar RTD chief Azmil Zainal Adnan as well as Ledang assemblyman Hamim Samuri.
In the 1.15am incident on Nov 30, the upper floor of the double-storey building which housed a meeting room and office was destroyed.
The damage caused temporary suspension of services, especially those related to licence renewals and road tax payments.

Time to give: Mislan showing a mock fund collection box for
contributions towards a special programme to clean up the district.
MUAR: District officer Mislan Karmani has thrown a challenge to all departments, schools, village committees and the town council here to clean up the district within two weeks.
He wanted all commercial and residential areas including the street, markets and recreational spots to be clear of rubbish before the month of Ramadan.
He said drainage and roads especially in urban areas, should be litter-free and challenged the groups to start picking garbage strewn there.
“We will be launching a special programme called Muar Daerahku Bersih Idamanku on Saturday and I want the town and its surrounding areas to be cleaned up by then.
“Since our Sultan will also be celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri here, we want him to see a cleaner Bandar Maharani,” he said after briefing department officers, village heads and school headmasters here last Thursday.
Mislan said he attended the Malaysia Games in Malacca recently and saw the city free of garbage.
He said that if Malacca could do it, there was no reason for Muar to be dirty and urged the Southern Waste Management as well as the town council to beef up their garbage management system.
Besides waste management, Mislan also urged the council to trim bushes, undergrowth and grass along the roads in the town, particularly in Tanjung Emas.
He said the road leading to Tanjung Emas, which is not only a popular recreational spot but where top civil servants lived, was dirty as the road pavement are overgrown with undergrowth and bushes.
Jalan Daud where council president Wahab Ridwan lived was also listed dirty as the road is littered with plastic bottles and bags.
The district officer also urged the people to adopt a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly.
Mislan said he plans to launch a programme in Tanjung Ketapang where people can participate in a ‘10,000 steps’ walking exercise.

MUAR: Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar opened the Muar Tenaga Nasional building at Jalan Sulaiman here.
Sultan Ibrahim, who was accompanied by the Tunku Mahkota of Johor Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim, arrived at the RM12mil building at about 10am yesterday.
Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, Tenaga Nasional chairman Tan Sri Leo Moggie and Deputy Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Noriah Kasnon were present to welcome the ruler.
After a doa recital by Johor Mufti Datuk Tahrir Shamsuddin, Sultan Ibrahim inserted a mock key into a gadget to open the office.
Earlier, Moggie said the TNB building took about three years to construct with a design based on the garden city concept. He said it would provide a more conducive working environment to all staff as well as make clients feel comfortable.
He said the building was accessible to the disabled and special parking bays and counters had also been provided for them.
Moggie said TNB had implemented
37 projects at a cost of RM7mil to improve power supply in Muar between 2009 and 2010.
The company also plans to spend another RM10mil to carry out 28 proposed projects in the district.
nazrey October 7th, 2010, 01:21 PM Abandoned Muar Olympic-sized pool to undergo renovation
2010/10/06 By Chong Chee Seong
http://www.nst.com.my/nst/articles/2plo/Article/
THE Youth and Sports Ministry is not in the position to apply for funds to rebuild the Muar Olympic-sized swimming pool.
Its deputy minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim said the pool is owned by the Muar Municipal Council, which is under the jurisdiction of a different ministry.
Razali said as Muar member of parliament, he would help the council to apply for funds from the Housing and Local Government Ministry to build a new pool.
He said the pool, which has been abandoned for more than 12 years, is dilapidated. Repair work is expected to cost RM2 million.
"The pool can be used as a training centre for students to achieve high standards in swimming," said Razali.
He said the swimming pool was once the pride of Muar and was well-known among Johoreans.
Meanwhile, Bakri member of parliament Er Teck Hwa said the pool has become a mosquito-breeding ground and home to monitor lizards.
The pool was built in 1977 at a cost of RM1.5 million through public donations and a ringgit-to-ringgit match grant from the government.
It was rented out to a private company from 1988 to 1993 before it was taken back by the council.
As there were no takers after spending RM50,000 on its facelift, the council had to shut the pool down due to the high maintenance cost.

The Johor royalty has roots in Muar (formerly Bandar Maharani) from way back. The Johor sultanate was derived from the Malacca sultanate, and Muar being close to Malacca, so..... There are royal palaces in Muar near the waterfront. Near "Tanjung" (rivermouth waterfront in Muar as the locals would know it affectionately), the old Sultan even landed his Nuri chopper (I saw that as a kid).
The current sultan is a health-conscious person, eating healthy vegetarian and organic foods. He may care about Muar, but this town has seen little progress over the years.

When I talked about Johor Sultanate, I was referring to the Johor-Malacca Dynasty, not the Bendehara/Temengong dynasty. The disposed Malacca sultan forming the new Johor sultanate was the one who ruled over Muar.
From Wiki:
HistoryMain article: Sultanate of Johor
The history of Modern Johor began in the early 16th century with the foundation of the Sultanate of Johor by the Alauddin Riayat Shah II, the son of Mahmud Shah, the last Sultan of Malacca who fled from the invading Portuguese in Malacca. His former name, however, was Raja Ali. Johor sultanate is one of the two successor states of the Melaka empire. Upon Malacca's defeat to the Portuguese in 1511, Alauddin Riayat Shah II had established a monarchy in Johor which posed a constant threat to the Portuguese.
BANDAR MAHARANI :Modern Muar Town was officially opened and conferred Bandar Maharani title by Maharaja Abu Bakar meaning the Town of Empress the namesake of Maharani Fatimah who also graced the grand inauguration ceremony of the new town on 12 August 1887, to symbolically representing and recognizing the prominence status of Muar as the 2nd important and biggest town and district of the state of Johor after the Johor Bahru capital city in those days.
^^ Not really known as Bandar Maharani anymore as the town has lost its 2nd-to JB status.
Although Muar in the past was ruled by descendents of Malaccan sultans, the current sultanate is derived from the Bendehara clan that replaced the Malaccan-lineage. However, the Malaccan sultans made Muar a royal town and that's why the current royalties still treat it like so.

the malccan clan has ended with the sultan mahmud mangkat dijulang,
but..the are making a comeback as the TMJ mother is from the melakan clan
bandar maharani was open after the jementah war, when the bendahara clan fought the brits n temenggong,..and legalized the position of the temenggongs as ruler, before that the sultan are from the bendaharas, but they only rule muar(at that time) b4 they rule the entire johore-riau lingga b4 the brits came
nazrey March 26th, 2011, 09:16 AM 600ha land for villagers in Muar
By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH Saturday March 26, 2011

MUAR: For the first time the land office here has opened up a tract of more than 600ha of land for villagers in two areas in the Muar parliamentary for cultivation.
The land, located along the coastal areas between Sungai Balang and Sungai Sudah, has been subdivided and offered to more than 1,300 villagers.
State Women, Family, Health and Community Development Committee chairman Dr Robia Kosai said each eligible villager would received a plot measuring 0.4ha.
She said the area had been illegally cultivated for more than 30 years by the local villagers who planted crops, including oil palm and rubber trees.
These villagers have encroached and tilled the land since 1970s, and only recently they were offered to apply for the titles.
However, other villagers who did not encroach into the area, also applied for a plot when the state decided to give the land, she said before presenting land forms to the recipients on Thursday.
Dr Robia, who is also the Sungai Balang assemblyman, said the villagers should be grateful to the state government and the Muar Land Office for giving out the plots.
She said it was the first time the state opened up a vast tract of state land to be given to 1,300 people for agricultural development purposes.
She said the state would build infrastructures, including roads, schools, religious school, police booth, fire unit and other facilities in the area.
She said the coastal area would be a modern village in the near future and urged the people to work hard and work together to develop their plots.
Earlier, special officer to Mentri Besar for the Maharani Datuk Mohd Ismail Mohd Shah said the state constituency decided to allocate the land to the villagers a few years ago.
He said there were still other areas along the coast which could be developed and advised those who did not receive plots to submit applications to the land office.
We urge the villagers to hold on to their plots and not sell them after receiving the titles to the land.
We want to thank the Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman and the Muar land administrator Han Ramin for allotting the land to the villagers,” he added.

nazrey April 27th, 2011, 05:16 AM Upgraded Muar Uptown to be a shopping haven
By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH Wednesday April 27, 2011

MUAR: Traders at the Muar Uptown should be given priority to continue to their business there when the area is upgraded and beautified soon.
Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim said the Muar municipal council should see to it that the pioneer group were given lots.
He said the government had approved some RM3mil allocation to upgrade Jalan Sisi, which had been turned into a night bazaar during the weekends.
The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had approved an allocation of RM1.5mil while Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman another RM1.5mil.
“The allocations were announced during the Prime Minister’s visit to the area last month,” he said.
Razali, who is also Muar MP, said he had to mention the matter as many traders who started their business there were left out and the authority had brought in new traders after the area is upgraded.
He added that such had happened in many big towns and he did not want the pioneer group of traders there to be excluded.
A stretch in Jalan Sisi would be resurfaced and the drains would also be covered to make the road wider.
Razali also hoped that the area would be brightly lit at night.
On complaints made by some traders whose goods with branded names were seized by some enforcement authorities, Razali said he would look into their problems.
Many stalls in Muar Uptown are selling branded goods at low prices.
People who bought such goods, said Razali, had realised that they were not genuine and he would raise the matter with the authorities soon.
“If the traders are selling fake goods at retail prices, then they were cheating and action should be taken.”
He also praised the Muar town council for setting up Muar Uptown as it now provided nearly 100 lots for traders to sell goods at night during weekends.
The Muar Uptown is now a new shopping attraction and people can buy dresses, fabrics, cookies, shoes, sandals, watches and cheap jewellery here.
“Apart from being a shopping haven, the spot also generated economic activities for the traders, taxi drivers and the bus operators,” he added.

Kajian pengubahan buka ruang pihak berminat majukan kawasan terbabit
Hadir sama, Setiausaha Kerajaan Negeri, Obet Tawil.

Long before articles were published about the benefits of having women at decision-making levels in a company. Datin Paduka Siti Sa'diah Sheikh Bakir was providing evidence of the fairer sex's ability with her skillfull handling 0f KPJ Healthcare Bhd. On her watch, KPJ Healthcare Bhd has grown from two hospitals when it was listed in 1994, into the nation's leading private-healthcare service provider with 20 hospitals in Malaysia.
In fact not only does KPJ have a 24% market share in Malaysia's private-healthcare services sector, it is now being increasing used as the sector's benchmark, according to TA Securities, in a research note dated Dec 2. 2010.
Equally important, perhaps, KPJ’s share holders are getting valuable returns on their investment. The company saw a compound annual growth rate (CAGP) of 23.8% for its net profit between 2006 and 2010 and 14.8% for revenue in the same period.
The movement in its share price has been equally heartening, and its sterling returns to shareholders of 55.1%, annually over the past three years won it The Edge Billion Ringgrt Club award for Best Performing Stock wrthin the combined Trading/Services Hotels, IPC and Technology sectors.
But thats not the end of the growth story. As Siti Sadiah, KPJ’s managing director, puts it, the group's ongoing expansions will continue to spur growth in line with the strategy of adding one or two new hospitals each year.
"We will continue to expand the hospital network in Malaysia, reach out to new markets within the country and increase market reach abroad through health tourism activities," she tells The Edge.
KPJ is currently in the process of completing a new hospital, KPJ Klang, which will be opened to the public in 4Q, and three other hospitals in Muar, Pasir Gudang and Tanjung Lumpur in Kuantan next year.
"With the facilities and infrastructure available in Malaysia, including in KPJ's full-fledged specialist hospitals, we are not only able to retain local patients in the country, but also to contribute to the nation’s efforts of bringing in medical tourists pass from abroad," says Siti Sa’diah.
As at end 2010, KPJ had seen some 12,000 health tourists pass through its doors, bringing in a revenue of almost RM25 million.
"We also hope to develop our education arm, KPJ International College of Nursing and Health Sciences, into a renowned education centre and a university college for nursing, medical-related studies and related management services," she adds.
Despite all this, KPJ’s growth story really lies in its innovative healthcare real estate investment trust (REIT). In 2006, KPJ embarked on a corporate exercise to inject six of its hospitals into the Al-'Aqar REIT, which is the first Islamic and healthcare REIT here.
The exercise has not only helped KPJ to unlock the value of its assets, it also freed up its cash flow by allowing it to receive good rental yields from its hospitals. As such, KPJ continues to inject its new hospital buildings into this REIT. To date, there are 20 hospital buildings and one college building in the REIT, totalling RM1.1 billion in assets.
anakmuar October 9th, 2011, 06:22 PM High speed train will move economy (http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2011/7/18/focus/9120536&sec=focus)
IT is time that the Government revived the High Speed Rail (HSR) service proposal to connect Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. In fact an HSR service should link Singapore and Butterworth in Penang.
All over the world countries see HSR services as the best mass transportation option between cities. China and South Korea are the leaders in the construction of HSR service networks for their people. China holds the record for the longest HSR network in the world.
On July 1, China launched an HSR service between Beijing and Shanghai. The train can reach a maximum speed of 300 km/hr, and travelling time between the two big cities – 1,318km apart – is less than five hours.
However, in Malaysia we are still debating whether or not to carry out such a project. Many views were put forward by the critics of this project, who see it as wasteful, and by transportation players, who look at it from their business point of view.
In time, the highways will not be able to cope with the number of vehicles on the road. More highways will need to be built. But this is not the best solution.
I think an HSR project will benefit Malaysia more than Singapore if we can align the route to take in the denser populated towns in Malacca and Johor.
The route from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore should pass through Seremban, Simpang Empat, Air Keroh, Muar, Batu Pahat, and Iskandar.
This will not affect the KTMB double tracking project as people in Seremban, Tampin, Segamat, Gemas, Yong Peng, Kluang and Kulai will still need reliable and safe inter city transportation.
By passing through Air Keroh, Muar, Batu Pahat and Iskandar these towns will benefit in terms of tourism and property values. Singaporeans will start to buy landed properties in these towns for investment or as their second home.
The northern towns stretching from Air Keroh to Penang will benefit from tourism, as travelling by HSR is more reliable and safer. There are many places in Johor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Selangor, Perak and Penang that can be promoted for tourism.
Also, there will be no need for Singaporeans to then drive into Malaysia.
In the next five to ten years, the Government will see a significant increase in GNI (Gross National Income), and the construction activities will add to Gross Domestic Product initially, as well as GNI in the latter years, from tourism and property transactions.
Coastal towns in Johor and Malacca will reap the benefits as weekend tourists spur business activities there. In this way, the Government will spread the economic cake to many parts of the country and achieve the high income target for many homes by 2020.
Therefore, the Government should re-look the proposal on this project and take in KTMB as a partner.
A decision has to be made quickly for the benefit of all Malaysians.

Subang Jaya.
anakmuar October 9th, 2011, 06:25 PM Sistem rel kelajuan tinggi memanfaatkan pembangunan Muar? (http://www.harakahdaily.net/v2/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=28737:sistem-rel-kelajuan-tinggi-memanfaatkan-pembangunan-muar&catid=27:surat-pembaca&Itemid=46)
Written by Er Teck Hwa

PAGOH: For Sekolah Kebangsaan Pagoh teacher Mohd Nor Samingin, the newly launched Pagoh University City here will help him achieve his dream of pursuing his studies and becoming a graduate.
Nor, 55, said he was excited about the project and hoped it would be realised soon not just for his benefit but also for the community in the area.
“I always wanted to continue my studies to do my Masters or Doctorate but never had the time and there are no universities near the school where I work,” he said when met at the ground breaking ceremony recently.
For food stall owner Nurliah Abdul Ghani, 48, the new education hub was just a stones throw away from her home in Taman Pagoh Jaya.
She said she was excited with the project especially for her young son who just enrolled at a primary school.
“I am confident that by the time my son is ready to enter into university, this place will be well developed.
“I also hope that by then, with more people living and studying in the area will help improve the livelihood of the locals in the area,” she said, adding that she operated a small stall near her home.
SJK (T) Ladang Lanadron principal M. Tiruvengadam, 55, said the hub would help students here to have a better choice in choosing a higher education centre for them to continue their studies.
“There are no universities located here as the nearest ones are either Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Segamat or Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) in Batu Pahat.
“Students here will now have an opportunity to further their studies to the country’s top universities at the education hub,” he said.
Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin in his speech at the launch of the project said the education hub would be located on a 404ha site.
“The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in 2015 where 16,800 students are expected to be placed inside the hub,” he said adding that among the universities in the hub would be UTHM, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA), and Politeknik Pagoh.
Deputy Prime Minister and Pagoh MP Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who officiated the ground breaking ceremony hoped the education hub would be the choice for locals and international students.
“The Pagoh Education City will be an education corridor in the northern part of the state and complement the education cluster in EduCity in Iskandar Malaysia, which is located in the south,” he said.

MUAR: The first phase of the Pagoh Education Hub, launched by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin Thursday, is capable of accommodating 14,000 students.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Education Hub, Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, said the development of the first phase would involve four local public institutions of higher learning (IPTA).
He said the local IPTAs were the Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Research Centre, and Politeknik Pagoh.
"The total cost for the construction of the education hub, encompassing several phases up to 15 years, is expected to be between RM5bil and RM6bil," said Muhyiddin, who is also the Member of Parliament for Pagoh.
He said the Pagoh Education Hub would be developed on a 1,000-acre site out of a total of 4,100 acres, which would be developed as the Pagoh University Town.

PAGOH: The Pagoh Education Hub and Pagoh University Town, to be developed in stages over the next 10 to 15 years, will be the catalyst for development in northern Johor.
Covering 1,659ha, the RM8 billion project will be the hub for higher education for northern Johor and serve as the "Education Corridor" for the Education Cluster in Vision Valley Malaysia under the Greater KL and Educity in Nusajaya, Iskandar Malaysia, in south Johor.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who performed the groundbreaking for the Pagoh Education City yesterday, said the project was line with the Economic Transformation Programme to develop the education sector as one of the National Key Result Areas.
"It will boost the economy in the area and provide other opportunities, such as education, and improve the people's socio-economic status. With the Education Hub, Pagoh will no longer be a sleepy hollow."
Present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman and Sime Darby Bhd chief operating officer Datuk Abdul Wahab Maskan.
Under the first phase, four institutions of higher learning will be opening their campuses -- the International Islamic University of Malaysia, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Politeknik Pagoh.
The first phase involves 202ha and is expected to completed by 2015. The campuses can accommodate 16,800 students.
The project is a public-private partnership funded through the Private Finance Initiatives with Sime Darby as the master developer.
Muhyiddin hoped international universities would also be interested in opening branch campuses at the hub.
"The government will consider incentives for these universities if they are interested. Incentives will depend on the value of their investment and the specialisation areas they offer."
He said he had met with representatives from the Bandung Institute of Technology on the matter but they had yet to make an offer.
"We will get in touch with them to see if they are interested. And if so, what kind of facilities they will need. We could build the facilities and they could rent them."

Sep 30, 2011
Construction of the 63km Segamat-Tangkak-Muar Highway, estimated to cost between RM750 million and RM770 million, will start in November.
Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Mansor said the implementation of the project proved that the Barisan Nasional government had kept its promise made to the people during the Tenang state seat by-election.
"During that by-election, I had stated that the government would try to speed up the project to upgrade the Segamat-Tangkak-Muar road into a four-lane highway as desired by the residents since 20 years ago.
"We announced it not to fish for votes, nor was it an empty promise made during an election, but felt that the project needed to be given priority due to many accidents occurring along this road," he said after visiting the highway project site in Jalan Muar, here, today.
Also present were Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, who is also Segamat member of parliament, and Kemelah assemblyman Ayub Rahmat.
Shaziman said while the road upgrading project would be carried out in five packages, the Public Works Department (PWD) would also be upgrading 14 bridges along the route.
He said the tender for the first package closed one month ago and the PWD had received an allocation of RM100 from the Finance Ministry for this package.
He also hoped the 2012 Budget to be tabled in parliament by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is also Finance Minister, would consider the allocation requested for repairing roads and bridges throughout the country as maintaining these would e cheaper than building new ones.
He, however, declined to reveal the amount requested. Bernama

Lebuh Raya Segamat-Tangkak-Muar Mula Dibina November Ini (http://mstar.com.my/berita/cerita.asp?file=/2011/9/29/mstar_berita/20110929162605&sec=mstar_berita)

anakmuar October 13th, 2011, 08:42 PM Peruntukan RM60 juta (http://www.sinarharian.com.my/johor/content/story8170256.asp)

IMO, Muar is the result of a poor town planning. The town centre are congested with small roads and buildings and the outskirts are filled with small private lands. And the Fed Gov doesn't make it any better. They made the PLUS Highway some 30++ km from the city, the 2nd bridge also seems to be out of place. To me, the only chance for Muar to be among the most develop towns in Malaysia is to wait for either Malacca or BP to spread their conurbation.

Community leaders in Muar are urging the state government to revive a flyover project and a third bridge to ease traffic congestion here.
The proposal to build a flyover at the end of the Sultan Ismail bridge and in the town centre was first mooted during the bridge's construction 30 years ago. However, the proposal was shelved and no reason was given.
Johor Chinese Chamber of Commerce deputy president Datuk Koh Kim Toon was in support of the construction of the flyover for vehicles from the north which could be diverted through Jalan Bakri and southwards to Batu Pahat.
This would allow better traffic flow to Jalan Arab and Jalan Meriam and into the outskirts.
He said the second bridge at Parit Bunga-Sabak Awor had reduced traffic from the town centre to the outer links by 30 per cent.
Koh said the traffic congestion in Muar was getting worse.
He said vehicles from the north use the Sultan Ismail bridge to get into Jalan Maharani. He said this maze around the town affected Muar's economic growth as businessmen were reluctant to come here.
He said the people wanted this problem resolved as the air and noise pollution was posing a grave health risk to everyone.
Chris Lee Ching Yong, a special officer appointed by Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, concurred with Koh.
He said the Sultan Ismail bridge should carry less vehicles into and out of the town.
Lee said China successfully introduced flyovers in major cities, thereby effectively easing traffic flow in the country.
Meanwhile, Pan-Malaysia Lorry Owners Association president Er Sui See said the construction of a flyover at the Sultan Ismail bridge was a good idea, but expressed concern over the cost.
Er, however, proposed the construction of another bridge connecting the Tanjung Agas industrial site to Jalan Ismail. He believed this would allow traffic to proceed to Jalan Salleh, Jalan Sungai Abong and onto Jalan Bakri by carrying vehicles away from the town.
MIC Bakri division chairman M. Aridas agreed with Er that the new bridge would reduce traffic flowing into Muar.
He said the new bridge would take away 40 per cent of the vehicle load from the Sultan Ismail bridge, which is currently carrying 70 per cent of all vehicles coming into Muar.
Aridas said the traffic volume would be distributed evenly between the other two bridges.
He said a new Tanjung Agas-Jalan Ismail bridge would carry 40 per cent of incoming and outgoing vehicles. He said this third bridge would allow the Sultan Ismail bridge to carry 30 per cent of vehicles coming in and going out of the town centre.
It would also allow the existing Parit Bunga-Sabak Awar bridge to carry 30 per cent of the vehicles.
Muar Municipal Council president Mohamad Fuad Radzuan said the council would compile public feedback on the proposal for submission to the state government.
Bakri member of parliament Er Teck Hwa said he would do the same and raise the issue in Parliament.

Sultan Johor Isytihar Bandar Maharani Sebagai Bandar Diraja
- BERNAMA

Caius the Shadow May 10th, 2012, 04:09 PM I might be too old for this but a Tutti Frutti outlet bakal dibuka di Muar :banana:. Ahad ni the grand opening. Semoga dapat bertahan ya Tutti Frutti. Jangan jadik macam Chicken Rice Shop, bukak xlaku then terpaksa ditutup... ( A friend of mine rugi besar maaa sbb suka-suka hati je bukak bisnes macam ni kat Muar..:ohno:). But if Baskin Robin can survive in Muar, TF will have no problem surving also. hoho

Caius the Shadow May 13th, 2012, 06:00 PM TQ 4 posting those pics. finally, ada pon orang Johor nak post soemthing kat thread selain JB.
Muar is changing little by little. the last time I went to Muar , I noticed lots of those ancient zaman tok kaduk punya shoplots are undergoing renovations/facelifts . I'm not a historian so I like all these changes.
aim11086 May 16th, 2012, 05:22 PM tp secara overall pembangunan kt Muar ni masih perlahan..
but still gud rather than nothing.

 for all these nice pics.
What's that tall building ?? If I'm not mistaken, Muar now has at least 4 buildings that has more than 10 floors. The D99 Hotel, Traders Hotel, Aprtment Maharani n this one here. Quite good I think for a bandar pencen. haha

ejatidiaz June 13th, 2012, 08:02 AM i love muar.. well except the traffic at the town..
i hope they can actually move the express bus stand to somewhere else and turn that area into bigger makan2 area during night
Caius the Shadow June 13th, 2012, 12:05 PM I just want to :bash: those 'smart' MPM people who think that separating express bus stand with local bus stand is a good idea. now both bus stands are in a serius mess.

haha.. but for me it's a good idea because buses sometimes have parking problem at the bus bay..
however, i couldnt agree more about the mess part..
Muar apart from known as pencen town, i personally called Muar as a town full of bangla especially during weekends.
OMG, do not ever try to take public bus to muar on weekends and during the day when they got their salary.:nuts:

so easy when have City and Rexton like you. :):)
but then so difficult to park cars in muar especially during peak hours..
most people park dekat celah building..

haha not sure whether the banglas and nepals contribute much to Muar's economy but one thing for sure, before the separation of Ledang from Muar, the amount of tax collected by MP Muar is almost as much as MP batu Pahat. This shows that, in term of economy, Muar is on par with BP and much stronger than Kluang. But lack of strategic location causes Muar to fall behind BP n Kluang in term of the number of highrise and shopping malls .BP MALL n KLUANG MALL can kill our Wetex Parade just like that.:ohno:
yeah, finding free parking space in Muar is like mencari padi dalam timbunan jarum. :bash: luckily wetex parade has underground parking space. parking situ je la.

jasontan12 June 26th, 2012, 07:22 AM Dear Experts,
I am Jason from Muar. Anybodies know if there are any future developments in Muar ?
It seems there are a lot of development constructions to make Melaka into a very advanced and fast growing central place of commercial hub, entertainment and tourism hotspot, very much credits shall be given to Dato Mohd Ali,
But I couldn't find any big constructions for Muar ?
Any news and future ?
Thanks a lot.

jasontan12 June 26th, 2012, 08:20 AM sigh, i'm quite disappointed with Muar. both TPM n MB rule in Muar/Ledang District, yet their presence are not strong enough to really push Muar to flourish, to be able to challenge BP at least. Leaave alone JB or Malacca. mcm xwat kerja je diorg berdua ni~~~
I cannot agree with you anymore, current developments in Muar is Sooo slow, cannot compare to Melaka AT ALL..
What about the Future Plans ?

The top three biggest constructions project in Muar right now is that builiding at Jalan Ibrahim (refer top pic) and the Sierra Maharani project near the AMJ Highway, PLUS Higway exit also now u/c at Bukit gambir.
Location is another thing which makes the progress in Muar to be slow.
Unlike Batu Pahat, Kluang and Segamat which are the only major town in each district = no competition, Muar on teh other hand, needs to compete with Tangkak and Bukit Gambir :bash:. Not to mention Melaka & BP as well as Segamat :bash:. With all these competitions, it is quite hard actually to attract things like AEON or SP Setia to invest in Muar :ohno:. But still, if our MB n TPM do their works at least a little bit more :bash:, i personally believe Muar can be on par with Kluang/BP.
daeng_jal June 26th, 2012, 11:56 AM well, there's
1)a giant university hub (whatever it is) in pagoh.
2)muar riverfront flood protection have been postponed by the fed due to lack of fund
3)there's KPJ hospital u/c
that all folks, most johor MB are from muar so, its not just the current MB fault..it the combo of them combined!!!..thing the MB said that has not come true
1)beca sg kesang is now officially abandon,no stall is open at all!!!.. while across the river tgh mcm pesta
2)a 2nd tg emas park across the river where the 2nd mosque is never is build
3)relocation of goverment building to the seafront also not build
4)well, they can't even build themself a ikan bakar food court that they promise all that while ago:lol:, what else other stuff
5) old TM building are supposed to be a museum,
heard from an UMNO folks, its hard for them to do stuff because unlike other johor town,
1)muar land is make up by tiny owners so to build up mass taman like elsewhere is hard
2)land surronding muar are mostly kebun, unlike other part of johor where the palm oil money comes roling in
3)fengshui also bad, wide open river mouth, narrow river, money flow out,not in:lol:
4)tersepit celah gantang, antara melaka and BP, most muar folks just go ride themself there, so no need for private investor to come in,there just build it elsewhere and muarian would drove/ride bus themself.due to AMJ u can get into melaka in 20minits,. AMJ is also the fastest highway i even drove on,mengalahkan PLUS.. people will drive at a minimum 130km/h
5)no, well nothing!, nothing is build to get people to come in!, there's no port,no attraction, historical site are unpromoted and unknown off to general public, theres no special economic zone,no science whatever park, no IPTS, no UNI, no politeknik no kolej komuniti (most muarian are send to merlimau instead)
someone told me even the CIQ to indon also stop operating.MYDin are rumored to build somewhere along AMJ,near the 2nd bridge..maybe its is postponed,as they are building one in jasin instead.

jasontan12 June 27th, 2012, 05:47 AM Muar is totally incomparable to Melaka, in my own opinion, being on a scale of 2 compare to 8 of melaka out of 10, too huge difference between Muar and Melaka developments.
Melaka is a very Successful State in terms of Developments.
This is just to compare Muar and Melaka, Don mention comparing to big cities like Singapore.

Not sure when is the completion date but the constructions started last year I think. The problem is, they use the old primitive method to build this thing.. No tower crane u see. That;s why it's so slow.

Trying to become like Melaka is too much la. Other capital cities like Alor Star/Kota Bharu/KualaTerengganu/Kuantan/Ipoh pon can't even beat Melaka. To me, Melaka is just a level or two below JB.
Muar realistic target is to become like BP or Kluang at most.

jasontan12 June 29th, 2012, 06:40 AM As i know in Melaka, Dato Ali is very successful ...., So many projects completed to make Melaka so good.... It is totally different now, every year or two in Melaka, you will see wonders, new hallmark built, new park, etc, now you can see Malacca Alive in Sept, the first in Malaysia, ( actually you can see Malacca is booming very fast with many projects ), but not Muar.
