LEMBANGAN SUNGAI RAJA DESTINASI BARU PELANCONGAN KEDAH

ALOR SETAR - Sungai Raja bakal berubah wajah apabila sungai dan kawasan sekitarnya dibangunkan di bawah Program Pembangunan Lembangan Sungai Bersepadu menjelang Rancangan Malaysia ke-10 (RMK-10).
Menurut Ketua Penolong Pengarah (Unit Sumber Air), Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran (JPS) negeri Kedah, Kamal Mustapha, sungai itu akan diperindahkan dengan konsep yang digunapakai Sungai Cheonggyecheon di Korea.

“Projek pengindahan sungai ini akan dibuat mengikut fasa dan kemungkinan kita akan lakukan fasa pertama untuk jarak sungai sejauh lima kilometer tetapi bagaimanapun, pelaksanaannya hanya akan dibincangkan dalam RMK-10,” katanya.

Beliau menjelaskan, Sungai Raja berpotensi untuk dibangunkan berikutan lembangan sungai itu agak luas dan sungai itu tidak begitu tercemar.

Bagaimanapun, katanya, perancangan masih di peringkat dasar dan akan dibentangkan kepada Kerajaan Negeri oleh JPS Malaysia pertengahan tahun 2009.

“Konsep baru yang diperkenalkan ini perlukan kerjasama semua jabatan dan agensi kerajaan di mana masing-masing perlu menyumbang pada perancangan memulihara sungai ini,” jelasnya.

Jika berjaya kelak, katanya, Sungai Raja akan menjadi sungai contoh di Kedah mahupun Malaysia.

Beliau berharap Jawatankuasa Lembangan Sungai peringkat negeri yang dipengerusikan oleh Menteri Besar akan melihat impak projek ini, kerana bukan sahaja mengindahkan persekitaran sungai, malah bakal menjadi tempat tumpuan ramai, sekaligus menjadi destinasi pelancongan baru.

Tambahnya, Korea mampu melakukannya dalam tempoh tiga tahun, tidak mustahil Kedah juga mampu merealisasikan impian ini kerana tahap antara kedua-dua sungai tidak jauh bezanya.

Beliau berkata, projek ini juga bakal membuka minda masyarakat bahawa kawasan sungai juga boleh dibangunkan sebagai pusat rekreasi mahupun riadah.

Menurutnya, pihaknya hanya mengambil konsep dari Korea sahaja, kemudian disesuaikan dengan kemampuan di sini.

Sebagai permulaan, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) sedang menjalankan kajian tentang punca-punca pencemaran Sungai Raja sebelum diaplikasikan program pembersihan sungai itu.

Ujarnya, setelah sungai itu dibersihkan daripada sampah-sarap, tebing sungai itu akan dinaik taraf dan dibangunkan, namun projek ini akan mengambil masa yang lama untuk disiapkan.

Tuanku Sultan rasmi bangunan baru Kelab Kedah DiRaja

ALOR SETAR, 24 Mei: Kelab Kedah DiRaja yang ditubuhkan pada tahun 1909 merupakan tapak untuk bersukan, berekreasi dan bersosial di mana ia menjadi tempat memupuk silaturahim di antara berbagai golongan masyarakat seperti Pegawai-pegawai Kerajaan dan golongan profesional, korporat dan perniagaan.
Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia (KDYMM) Tuanku Sultan Kedah bertitah, fungsi kelab ini masih wujud sehingga sekarang dan Baginda percaya ahli-ahlinyalah yang memberikan imej kepada sesebuah Kelab dan Pertubuhan.

"Beta berharap imej baik kelab ini perlulah juga didokong oleh imej baru, ahli-ahli Royal Kedah yang mencerminkan nilai-nilai yang beta sebutkan tadi," titah Baginda.

Baginda bertitah demikian pada majlis perasmian Bangunan Baru Royal Kedah Club dan Sambutan Jubli Emas Pemerintahan KDYMM Tuanku Sultan Kedah ke-81 di sini.

Baginda berharap Jawatankuasa Pengurusan dan Jawatankuasa Disiplin akan memainkan peranan yang sewajarnya supaya bangunan dan imej Royal Kedah Club akan sentiasa terpelihara dan berada di tahap yang tinggi.

"Beta bukan bermaksud menjadikan kelab ini satu kelab yang elitis, yang terpencil dari masyarakat tetapi kelab yang berprestij, bermaruah dan juga mencari jalan untuk mendekati masyarakat," titah Baginda.

Sebagai sebuah kelab, titah Baginda, keupayaan ahli-ahli untuk mendekati masyarakat adalah luas dan ini mungkin merupakan satu agenda baru dan imej baru kepada Royal Kedah.

"Beta mengucapkan setinggi-tinggi tahniah kepada Presiden dan Jawatankuasa Pengurusan Kelab kerana telah berjaya menyiapkan projek pembangunan tambahan prasarana kelab dan Beta amat berbangga di atas pencapaian ini serta kagum dengan hasilnya, sebagai satu mercu tanda baru Bandaraya Alor Setar," titah Baginda.

Baginda juga turut menyampaikan penghargaan kepada Kerajaan Negeri Kedah Darul Aman yang telah menjadikan Bangunan Baru Royal Kedah Club sebagai satu projek untuk Perayaan Jubli Emas Pemerintahan Baginda yang disambut pada tahun 2008.

Baginda mengucapkan syabas kepada pihak pengurusan kerana berjaya meningkatkan kualiti, operasi dan pentadbiran kelab seiring dengan kemudahan baru ini dan keterampilan wajah baru kelab ini adalah sejajar dengan imej Royal Kedah yang sepatutnya.

"Beta sangat-sangat berharap ahli-ahli akan mengekalkan imej ini terutama dalam tatasusila budaya kesopanan dan penghayatan Club Rules dan ahli-ahli hendaklah bersifat seperti 'Ladies' dan 'gentlemen' dalam erti kata yang sebenar yang akan mencerminkan wajah sebenar Royal Kedah," titah Baginda.

Baginda turut mengajak ahli-ahli sebagai Ahli Royal Kedah menghormati dan berasa sayang kepada harta baru kelab ini dan diharapkan 'sense of belonging' ini akan mengeratkan silaturahim serta menjadikan kelab ini sebagai 'second home' kita.

THE Alor Star Tower management has begun a search to uncover Kedah’s musical talents under a contest called the ‘Tower Idol’ which is modelled after the popular television reality series ‘American Idol.’

Competitors must be aged 16 years and above.

Each participant is required to pay a registration fee of RM20.

The search had kicked off earlier in April at two venues in Sungai Petani (Tesco and Village Mall) and Bukit Mak Inson in Pendang.

The next one will be held at Jerai Plaza in Gurun on June 13.

This is followed by one at Langkawi in the Langkawi Parade shopping mall and several other venues for the next few months.

The singing competition will take a break during the fasting month of Ramadan.

The top two singers at each selection venue will be chosen to participate in the grand final to be held at the Alor Star Tower premises on Dec 26.

Alor Star Tower general manager Mazlan Mahmud said cash prizes of RM300, RM200 and RM100 would be given to the top three winners at each of the selection trial venues respectively.

He added that the champion at the grand finale would receive a cash prize of RM3,000, a trophy and a hamper.

Apart from receiving the prizes and earning the Tower Idol title, the champion would also get a chance to cut an album, Mazlan told a press conference recently.

Meanwhile, a series of fun-filled activities have been lined up for schoolchildren on the occasion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s birthday at the Alor Star Tower on Saturday.

Among them are a heritage trail treasure hunt, a colouring contest, a skating competition, BMX Flatland racing activity, a photography event and an eat-all-you-can contest.

Site Of Pig Slaughtering Centre To Be Turned Into Food Court

ALOR SETAR, June 3 (Bernama) -- The pig slaughtering centre at Kampung Berjaya here will be demolished and the site will be used to set up a food court, Alor Setar Mayor Datuk Khazali Din said today.

He said the food court would leased to traders currently operating by road sides and near drains in the area to provide them with a clean and hygienic place to operate their businesses.

The place was suitable to set up a food court because of its strategic location, which was near residential areas, he told reporters here.

Recently, the state government has extended for another month, from May 30, the notice for the operator of the slaughtering centre, which has been operating without a permit since more than 30 years, to shift his operation to a new site.

Whistling uplittering fines


ALOR STAR: Litterbugs, beware the sound of a loud whistle as you throw a sweet wrapper on the road or a cigarette butt out of your car.
From Monday, the Alor Star City Council has implemented rules that could result in litterbugs being fined a maximum of RM300.

Mayor Datuk Khazali Din said those caught red-handed would be fined on the spot by council officers "armed" with whistles.

"The concept is similar to a football referee who blows his whistle for a foul by a player. The referee will issue a yellow or red card.

"In this case, our officers will blow their whistles to alert litterbugs that they have committed an offence.
"The offenders may have to pay an immediate fine of RM20 or as much as RM300 if they receive notification by post," he said yesterday.

"Officers with the authority to issue fines may or not be in uniforms.

"But they will definitely show their authority cards before issuing fines."

Teenagers and children may be exempted from the fines.

Khazali said the council had distributed flyers about the new approach to cleanliness to primary and secondary schools here.

"To create awareness, we think it is best to start with schoolchildren.

"Parents and elders will sometimes listen to children.

"Efforts such as this might be small but, hopefully, it will make a difference to cleanliness in the city."

Cadangan perkenal bas shuttle di Alor Setar


ALOR SETAR: Kerajaan negeri bercadang memperkenalkan perkhidmatan bas shuttle di kawasan bandar raya ini dalam usaha mengatasi masalah kesesakan yang berpunca daripada kekurangan tempat meletak kereta.

Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak, berkata dengan mewujudkan perkhidmatan bas shuttle yang menghubungkan lokasi tertentu di kawasan bandar raya, kemasukan kenderaan persendirian dapat dikurangkan, sekali gus mengatasi masalah kesesakan.

"Kajian terperinci mengenai kesesuaian perkhidmatan itu, bagaimana ia dikendalikan dan siapa yang akan menyediakan perkhidmatan itu sedang dilakukan.

"Kerajaan berharap perkhidmatan itu dapat disediakan sebelum akhir tahun ini demi keselesaan rakyat, khususnya yang berpendapatan rendah," katanya selepas mempengerusikan mesyuarat Exco di sini, kelmarin.

Azizan berkata, pengguna akan dikenakan tambang yang amat berpatutan kerana perkhidmatan itu tidak boleh diberikan percuma disebabkan terpaksa menanggung kos membeli bas, operasi, penyelenggaraan dan gaji pekerja.

Katanya, masalah sistem letak kereta di bandar raya ini yang agak ketinggalan dan bercelaru perlu perlu dirombak semula pada masa depan demi keselesaan warga kota dan pelancong yang berkunjung ke sini.

Dalam perkembangan lain, Azizan berkata, kerajaan negeri sudah membeli sebidang tanah seluas kira-kira 3.4 hektar di Taman Pandan sebagai ganti tapak Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SRJKC) Pumpong yang tanahnya diambil alih sebelum ini.

Verwater bina terminal minyak RM1.25b di Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, 15 Jun - Syarikat pelaburan Lenstar telah memeterai kontrak dengan Verwater Group di Hoogvliet, bagi membina terminal simpanan petroleum bernilai 220 juta euro (RM1.25 bilion) di Kedah.

Shiv Grewal, Pengerusi Lenstar Investment Ltd. (Lenstar) yang berpusat di United Kingdom dan Pengarah Urusan Lenstar Mohammad Munir Malik, telah memeterai perjanjian berkenaan hari ini.

Lenstar dalam kenyataannya di sini berkata, projek ini akan mengambil masa kurang 36 bulan untuk disiapkan.

Pembinaan sebuah kemudahan itu adalah sebagai memenuhi visi Lenstar untuk memainkan peranan penting dalam industri berkenaan di Timur Jauh. Syarikat ini telah pun membeli tanah seluas 100 hektar dan memiliki permit-permit yang diperlukan bagi memulakan pembinaan terminal penyimpanan yang baru ini, termasuklah sebuah saluran paip sepanjang 22 kilometer menghala ke persisiran pantai Malaysia.

Kawasan tangki simpanan petroleum akan digunakan oleh syarikat Malaysia, Pristine Oil bagi menyimpan minyak mentah.

Ketika menjelaskan pemilihan Malaysia sebagai lokasi untuk kemudahan baru itu, Munir Malik berkata: "Ada tiga rantau penting berkaitan dengan perdagangan minyak mentah di seluruh dunia, iaitu Suez, Panama dan Selat Melaka. ''Kedudukan Malaysia strategik, kerana berdekatan dengan Singapura dan Indonesia. Tambahan lagi, ekonomi yang stabil dan berkembang pesat memainkan peranan dalam pemilihan Malaysia," kata beliau.

Katanya, pembinaan ladang tangki yang baru ini akan menyediakan 10,000 peluang pekerjaan baru di rantau itu dan setelah ditauliahkan, lebih daripada 2,000 orang akan bekerja di situ.

Munir berkata, kerjasama di antara Verwater dan Lenstar bermula daripada satu usahasama di Timur Tengah.

Grewal berkata, Verwater dipilih kerana ia merupakan syarikat bersaiz sederhana yang berpengalaman dalam perniagaan membina, mengekalkan dan memperbaiki kemudahan tangki simpanan sejak 1922.

''Dengan kepakaran bertahun-tahun mereka dan juga berdasarkan pengalaman daripada projek-projek sebelum ini dengan Verwater di Timur Tengah, Verwater diminta bekerjasama dalam projek ini juga," tambah beliaunya.

Bina hotel di tanah wakaf

ALOR SETAR - Sebanyak lima tanah wakaf akan dibangunkan dalam Rancangan Malaysia ke-10 (RM10) melalui Jabatan Wakaf, Zakat dan Haji negeri ini.

Yang Dipertua Majlis Agama Islam Kedah (MAIK), Datuk Syeikh Uzir Baharom berkata, kelima-lima tanah wakaf itu bakal dibangunkan untuk manfaat umat Islam di negeri ini.

“Tanah seluas 1.4 hektar di Limbung Kapal diwakafkan anak cucu Mohd Ariffin Morad akan didirikan bangunan kedai pejabat tiga tingkat dengan kos RM15 juta, serta sebuah hotel wakaf dengan kos RM30 juta,” katanya ketika membentangkan kertas kerja bertajuk Pengurusan Wakaf di Kedah.

Menurutnya, tanah wakaf Sekolah Menengah Agama Maahad Ad Dini di Suka Menanti, pula akan dibina bangunan sekolah dengan kos RM15 juta.

“Pusat Pengajian Islam Darussolihin pula mewakafkan tanah di Jalan Bukit Tembaga untuk bangunan asrama, rumah guru, rumah warden dan dewan serbaguna melibatkan belanja RM5 juta,” katanya.

Wakaf perkuburan Islam di Pekan Padang Sera akan dibangunkan bangunan kedai dua tingkat dengan kos RM3 juta, manakala Kompleks Latihan dan Rumah Transit saudara baru yang melibat kos RM15 juta akan dibangunkan di tanah wakaf Pusat Bimbingan Islam Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah (Pusba).

Syeikh Uzir berkata, sebuah lagi tanah wakaf yang akan dibangunkan melalui Mesyuarat Pelaburan dan Pembangunan Tanah Wakaf dan Baitulmal ialah dari Masjid Derga, Tanjung Musang dan Jabi dan di Jalan Kuala Kedah dengan keluasan 11 hektar.

“Sebuah bangunan kedai pejabat dan perumahan dijangka dibina di situ dengan pajakan selama 99 tahun,” katanya.

Menurutnya, pihak pentadbiran majlis mengamalkan dasar keterbukaan bagi memantapkan lagi pengurusan harta wakaf di negeri ini.

Selain lima projek yang bakal dilaksanakan itu, dua projek yang kini masih dalam pembinaan ialah asrama anak yatim di Lorong Seri, Derga dan bangunan kedai pejabat tiga tingkat di Limbung Kapal.

“Tiga tanah wakaf yang telah dibangunkan pula ialah Kompleks Perniagaan Sentosa di Jalan Putra, projek perumahan di Jalan Sultanah Sambungan dan perumahan di Sungai Petani,” katanya.

Syeikh Uzir berkata, hasrat badan itu ialah untuk mewujudkan sistem pengurusan wakaf serta membangunkan tanah wakaf yang cekap dan berkesan selaras dengan enakmen Pentadbiran Undang-Undang Islam Negeri Kedah (2008) dan dasar MAIK.

Kawasan bersejarah di Kedah terabai

ALOR SETAR 25 Jun - Terletak di utara Semenanjung, negeri ini dikenali sebagai jelapang padi negara kerana mempunyai kawasan sawah yang terbentang luas.

Di sebalik peranannya sebagai penyumbang terbesar kepada pengeluaran beras negara, Kedah juga mempunyai pelbagai nilai warisan sejarah yang menarik dan wajar dipertahankan.

Sekadar mengambil beberapa contoh, bandar raya ini yang menyimpan sejarah sebagai bandar tertua selain memiliki tapak peninggalan sejarah Lembah Bujang di Sungai Merbok.

Bagaimanapun, lahir kebimbangan daripada pencinta sejarah apabila melihat ada tempat-tempat bersejarah di negeri ini diabaikan, gara-gara kurangnya kesedaran segolongan masyarakat untuk menghargainya.

Walaupun pada mulanya terdapat usaha untuk menjaga kawasan-kawasan berkenaan dengan membina dataran atau mengindahkannya, namun lama-kelamaan ia seolah- olah dilupa dan diabaikan begitu sahaja.

Keadaan itu dibimbangi oleh Pengerusi Persatuan Sejarah Malaysia Cawangan Kedah, Datuk Wan Shamsudin Mohd. Yusof yang kecewa apabila melihat banyak tempat dan bahan sejarah di sekitar negeri ini semakin terbiar atau terancam, tanpa dipelihara dengan baik.

Bagi Wan Shamsudin, kawasan yang mempunyai nilai sejarah itu perlu terus dikekalkan walaupun ia semakin membangun.

Kebimbangan beliau sebenarnya bukan perkara baru, tetapi telah berulang kali disuarakan tetapi sehingga kini masih belum mendapat maklum balas yang positif daripada pihak bertanggungjawab.

"Jika keadaan ini dibiarkan berterusan, tidak mustahil tempat-tempat yang mempunyai nilai sejarah akan dilupakan dan tinggal nama sahaja," katanya di sini baru- baru ini.

Dalam hal ini, Wan Shamsudin memberikan contoh kawasan memperingati bermulanya bandar Alor Setar yang terletak bertentangan dengan Balai Seni Negeri di tengah bandar raya ini yang kini kelihatan suram.

Sebelum ini, satu dataran dibina di situ semasa merayakan ulang tahun ke-250 bandar Alor Setar pada 1990 bagi menghargai kawasan yang mempunyai sejarah yang cukup bermakna itu.

Namun, katanya, sekitar dataran berkenaan kini suram dan bahagian tulisan di papan maklumat mengenainya telah tanggal dipercayai akibat perbuatan vandalisme.

"Keadaan ini sekali gus menggambarkan kawasan yang bernostalgia itu tidak dijaga dengan rapi atau bersungguh-sungguh.

"Kewujudannya seolah-olah tidak diendahkan lagi," katanya.

Justeru, beliau menggesa pihak berkuasa di negeri ini supaya membangun dan menitikberatkan aspek penyelenggaraan tempat-tempat bersejarah agar ia tidak terbiar begitu sahaja.

Mungkin juga sudah sampai masanya satu badan pentadbir khas ditubuhkan bagi memastikan semua tapak sejarah di negeri ini diuruskan dengan baik dan tidak terabai.

SUNGAI PETANI 27 Jun - Persatuan Pengusaha Industri Pelancongan Negeri Kedah akan memberi fokus kepada beberapa destinasi termasuk Sungai Sedim, Muzium Padi, Pesisir Sungai Merbok, Lembah Bujang dan Gunung Jerai sebagai tarikan utama pelancong.

Pengerusinya, Datin Nadzriyah Jaafar berkata, pihaknya bukan sahaja akan memberi tumpuan kepada Langkawi yang telah lama popular malah destinasi berkenaan yang terletak di tanah besar dan mempunyai keistimewaan tersendiri.

Beliau berkata, pihaknya mensasarkan pelancong domestik terutama daripada kalangan warga emas dan pelajar sebagai tumpuan dalam aktiviti promosi.

"Golongan inilah yang menjadi tumpuan dalam galakan dan promosi menggalakkan pelancong untuk mengunjungi negeri ini," katanya di sini.

Nadzriyah berkata, tidak ramai menyedari Kedah mempunyai destinasi unik yang boleh menarik pelancong dengan sasaran lebih besar.

Katanya, kelebihan Kedah ialah memiliki laut, sungai, gunung, hutan dan tasik serta air panas merupakan satu keistimewaan yang sukar diperoleh di negeri lain.

Beliau turut mengajak pengusaha industri makanan supaya tampil secara bersungguh-sungguh untuk mengkomersialkan makanan popular negeri ini.

Plaza Tunku Yaacob Houses First Five-star Hotel In Kedah

ALOR SETAR, July 3 (Bernama) -- Plaza Tunku Yaacob at the Sultan Abdul Halim Highway, opposite Menara Alor Setar, here, will be given a RM300 million facelift, incorporating a five-star hotel, the first in the state.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said the plaza, abandoned for 28 years, would be revived in two phases -- reinforcing the building structure and developing the vacant land nearby.

He said the plaza would also have three-star budget hotels to provide a choice to certain guests, a convention centure and an international standard shopping complex similar to that found in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

The project slated to start next year is a tripartite joint venture among Belleview Bina Sdn Bhd, Bina Darulaman Berhad and Kedah State Development Corporation.

"The state government is optimistic with the initiative to revive the plaza and is confident to complete it within the specified timeframe -- about three years after approvals were received from relevant government agencies and local authorities.

"The State Development Corporation will hold 20 per cent stake in the joint-venture entity. Sufficient cashflow to finance the redevelopment will be provided by Belleview," he told reporters.

Azizan hoped government-linked companies in Kedah and local contractors would be given the opportunity to participate in the plaza reconstruction work.

"The project will also provide opportunities to Bumiputera petty traders to venture into retail business and operate food outlets at the food court inside the commercial complex.

"Kedah will have a new landmark that will change the image of the Alor Setar City and will generate businesses for government-linked companies," he added.

RM120 Mil Facelift For Abandoned Plaza Tunku Yaacob

ALOR SETAR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Plaza Tunku Yaacob, abandoned for 28 years, is to be refurbished for RM120 million, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak announced today.

The rehabilitation includes land acquisition and paying compensation to the Kedah Royal family, he said.

He said the building would be jointly redeveloped by three parties -- a property developer, Beyview Sdn Bhd, Bina Darulaman Berhad and Kedah State Development Corporation.

A technical committee was currently negotiating ways to inject money for the project and compensating Tunku Yaacob's family," he told reporters after chairing the weekly state executive council meeting.

Plaza Tunku Yaacob, located at the city centre, opposite Menara Alor Setar, has high commercial value. It was planned to be a commercial hub when it was built in 1981.

The project remained abandoned despite changing hands to several developers.

Earlier, Azizan handed a cheque for RM30,000 raised by government departments and agencies for the Gaza Humanitarian Fund to State Secretary

Datuk Wira Syed Unan Mashri Syed Abdullah who then passed the cheque to the New Straits Times representative Adib Powera.

ALOR SETAR 3 Julai - Plaza Tunku Yaacob yang terletak berhadapan Menara Alor Setar di sini akan dipulihkan semula dan dimajukan sebagai hotel bertaraf lima bintang yang pertama di negeri ini.

Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak berkata, pembinaan semula plaza yang terbengkalai sejak 28 tahun itu akan melibatkan dua fasa iaitu pemulihan struktur bangunan dan pembangunan kawasan tanah lapang berhampiran yang dijangka menelan belanja lebih RM300 juta.

Beliau berkata, plaza berkenaan juga akan menempatkan hotel bertaraf tiga bintang, pusat konvensyen serta kompleks membeli-belah bertaraf antarabangsa seperti di Kuala Lumpur dan Singapura.

Katanya, projek yang dijangka bermula tahun depan itu akan dilaksanakan secara usaha sama antara syarikat pemaju Belleview Bina Sdn. Bhd., Bina Darulaman Bhd. (BDB) dan Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Kedah (PKNK).

"Kerajaan negeri sangat positif dengan usaha pemulihan ini dan yakin ia akan siap dalam tempoh yang ditetapkan iaitu kira-kira tiga tahun dari tarikh mendapat kelulusan rasmi kerajaan negeri serta pihak berkuasa yang berkenaan.

"Dalam projek pembangunan semula kompleks ini, PKNK akan memegang saham 20 peratus dalam syarikat usaha sama. Aliran tunai yang mencukupi untuk menampung kos pembangunan akan disediakan oleh Belleview," katanya kepada pemberita di sini.

Azizan berkata, dengan adanya projek pembangunan semula itu, kerajaan negeri berharap syarikat GLC Kedah dan kontraktor tempatan akan turut diberi peluang untuk terlibat sama dalam pembinaannya.

Beliau berkata, projek berkenaan juga akan memberi peluang kepada peniaga kecil bumiputera dan tempatan untuk menceburi perniagaan runcit dan medan selera dalam kompleks komersial itu.

"Selepas pembinaan pusat komersial bertaraf antarabangsa dan juga hotel bertaraf lima serta tiga bintang ini siap sepenuhnya, Kedah akan mempunyai satu mercu tanda baru, sekali gus mengubah wajah bandar raya Alor Setar.

Kuala Kedah, The 'Gateway' To Langkawi

ALOR STAR, July 13 (Bernama) -- Not many may know the history behind the fort at Kuala Kedah. Members of the younger generation are rarely exposed to the significance of this ancient fort.

When asked about the fort's history, many would say:"It is the gateway to Pulau Langkawi". Only that, nothing else.

Kota Kuala Kedah was known as Kota Kuala Bahang a century ago. It is located only 12 miles from here, and sits on more than 2.0 hectares of land.

The fort was built using clay, mangrove wood and bamboo during the reign of Sultan Sulaiman Shah who ruled from Kota Seputih at that time.

TUSSLE FOR THE FORT

Its strategic location brought the attention of not only the region's powers at that time -- Aceh, Siak, Bugis and Siam, but also from the foreign nations Holland, Portugal and England that were out for their share of the spice trade in Southeast Asia.

After being severely damaged due to attacks for several times, the 20th Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdullah Mukharam Shah ordered for the fort to be rebuilt.

Architect Hafiz Sab led work to rebuild the fort and he had designed a fort at the original site.

The walls of the forts were constructed from a mix of items sourced locally like the shells of cockles and snails, limestone apart from the egg white and honey of bees.

The bricks used were of high quality and crafted by brick makers from India while the soil taken was sourced from Alor Star.

SPECIAL

The head of the Kota Kuala Kedah History Complex, Md Zokhi Tahir said the sturdiness of the Kuala Kedah fort can be seen until today. According to Md Zokhi, no other similar forts in the country can be seen still standing like the Kuala Muda fort.

"To retain the fort's structure, the Museum Department has decided to refurbished this old fort," he said.

Md Zokhi said the work involved the reconstruction of the fort's walls and its two arches.

"The fort is rebuilt according to its original design and the materials used are also almost similar to the original," he said.

ARTIFACTS

The fort also has artifacts like porcelain and ceramic wares, cannons and their cannon balls.

"These artifacts are the prove that Kota Kuala Kedah at one time ago was the centre for trade in the region apart from a key defence point," said Md Zokhi.

He said in an effort to ensure the fort remains popular with tourists, the management of the Kota Kuala Kedah History Complex has arranged for guided tours of the structure.

"We also provide information on the fort's history for the tourists," he said.

APPRECIATE HISTORY WHILE RELAXING

To further beautify the fort and its surrounding areas, the complex's management has initiated the effort to construct a pedestrian mall along the riverbank of a nearby river apart from upgrading the fort's landscapes.

"Apart from appreciating the history, the visitors could also enjoy the scenery while taking a walk along Sungai Kedah," he said.

He said facilities like toilets, cafeteria, surau, business spaces and gift shops are available.

"We want to make this place lively. Kota Kuala Muda should not only be a place of history but also for those who are looking for relaxation and recreational activities," Md Zokhi added.

KDYMM Tuanku Sultan rasmi Kompleks Pentadbiran Kerajaan Persekutuan Bandar Mu’adzam Shah

ALOR SETAR, 12 Jun: Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Tuanku Sultan Kedah berangkat ke majlis perasmian Kompleks Pentadbiran Kerajaan Persekutuan Bandar Mu’adzam Shah di Dataran Promenade di sini, hari ini.
Turut sama pada majlis itu Perdana Menteri Malaysia YAB Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak, Menteri Besar Kedah YAB Dato’ Seri Ustaz Azizan Abdul Razak dan Ketua Setiausaha Negara Tan Seri Mohd Sidek Haji Hassan.

Baginda berkenan melafazkan titah perasmian kompleks berkenaan yang dibina di atas tanah seluas`16.1 hektar di Anak Bukit antara Bandar Raya Alor Setar dan Lapangan Terbang Sultan Abdul Halim.

Kompleks ini dibina mengikut dua fasa, yang pertama menempatkan bangunan Wisma Persekutuan dan Bangunan Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (Wisma Hasil). Manakala fasa kedua pula ialah Bangunan Mahkamah Syariah dan Pejabat Mufti, Bangunan Kementerian Dalam Negeri dan Dewan serbaguna. Lain-lain termasuklah Kompleks Kesejahteraan Rakyat dan Balai Polis Anak Bukit.

Memulakan ucapan YAB Dato’ Seri Najib memberi pujian kepada Menteri Besar Kedah. Katanya, walaupun Kedah berbeza pendapat namun sentiasa memberi kerjasama yang baik kepada Kerajaan Persekutuan.

“Walau terdapat perbezaan pendapat antara kerajaan Kedah dengan kerajaan Pusat tetapi Kedah sentiasa memberi kerjasama yang baik,” katanya.

Menyentuh mengenai kompleks ini beliau berkata, kompleks ini dibangun mengikut kesesuaian fungsi dan aktiviti jabatan serta agensi yang menghuni. Lokasinya pula menyumbang kepada rencana pembangunan negeri Kedah mengelakkan dari kesesakan trafik Bandar Raya Alor Setar.

Katanya, apabila mengambil alih jawatan Perdana Menteri beliau mengutarakan ‘1Malaysia yang rakyat didahulukan pencapaian diutamakan’. Oleh itu pentadbirannya mengutamakan khidmat terbaik kepada rakyat.

Katanya, untuk menjayakannya segala perubahan yang diperlukan ialah mewujudkan sebuah pesekitaran yang kondusif untuk semua rakyat dengan mengoptimakan potensi mereka.

Sehubungan itu, peranan sebuah perkhidmatan awam yang berkesan, responsif, luwes dan berani melakukan perubahan.

“Saya amat gembira kerana dalam menggerakkan inisiatif modernisasi tersebut saya telah mendapat sokongan dan kerjasama padu daripada barisan kepimpinan tertinggi perkhidmatan awam.

“Sesungguhnya pembaharuan yang akan dilakukan ini bukanlah bersifat ‘top down’ tetapi sebaliknya melibatkan gabung jalin semua segmen perkhidmatan awam bermula dari pimpinan atasan,” katanya.

Justeru itu beliau menyeru pegawai-pegawai kerajaan agar menggunakan dan menjaga kemudahan yang telah diberikan dengan penuh intergriti.

“Saya sering menekankan bahawa kejayaan itu tidak diukur oleh besar atau hebatnya sesebuah binaan fizikal. Apa yang lebih utama adalah faktor keberhasilan mutu kerja dan khidmat yang disampaikan oleh penjawat awam. Itulah kayu ukur yang digunakan rakyat bagi menilai prestasi kerajaan,” katanya.

Lain-lain kenamaan yang hadir di majlis itu ialah YTM Tengku Bendahara Kedah, YTM Tengku Laksamana Kedah, YTM Tunku Panglima Besar Dato’ Seri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz, Ahli-Ahli Exco kerajaan Negeri Kedah, Ahli-Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri dan ketua-ketua jabatan.

Eksplorasi Warisan Menara Alor Setar 25 Julai


KUALA LUMPUR: Hadiah lumayan keseluruhan bernilai RM30,000 bakal direbut peserta Eksplorasi Warisan Menara Alor Setar 2009 yang akan berlangsung di Bandar Raya Alor Setar pada 25 Julai ini.

Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Menara Kuala Lumpur, Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad, berkata acara julung kali diadakan dikenali larian warisan bertujuan mempromosikan Kedah Darul Aman sebagai destinasi pelancongan negara.

“Acara ini dibuka kepada peserta berkumpulan seramai tiga orang dan dibahagikan kepada enam kategori iaitu terbuka dan jemputan.

“Hadiah lumayan menanti peserta yang berminat menyertainya di samping berpeluang menjelajah bandar raya negeri itu yang penuh dengan khazanah warisannya,” katanya pada sidang media selepas merasmikan Eksplorasi Warisan di Menara Alor Star 2009 di Menara Kuala Lumpur.

Katanya, pada pertandingan itu, sebanyak sepuluh tempat warisan yang dirahsiakan akan menjadi laluan kepada peserta untuk menjawab soalan berkaitan tempat terbabit.

“Apa yang menarik, semua jawapan akan terjawab di sepuluh tempat warisan itu. Siapa yang dapat menyelesaikan dengan cepat akan memenangi hadiah pertandingan berupa wang tunai dan hamper.

“Orang ramai jangan lepaskan peluang ini susulan tempat adalah terhad kepada 150 pasukan saja,” katanya.

Turut diadakan Karnival Warisan pada 24 Julai ini, bermula jam 10 pagi hingga 10 malam dengan penganjuran konsert mini oleh artis tempatan selain jualan makanan dan produk keluaran negeri Kedah

Gunung Keriang akan dinaik taraf

ALOR SETAR 15 Julai - Majlis Bandaraya Alor Setar (MBAS) akan melakukan kerja-kerja naik taraf Taman Rekreasi Gunung Keriang di sini untuk menarik lebih ramai pelancong ke kawasan tersebut.
Datuk Bandar, Khazali Din berkata, taman tersebut sudah mempunyai kemudahan untuk para pelancong namun ia dirosakkan oleh mereka yang tidak bertanggung jawab.
"Bila saya membuat tinjauan ke kawasan tersebut, kemudahan awam seperti tandas diconteng dan tidak terjaga.
"Kita sendiri yang rugi apabila tempat-tempat menarik seperti Gunung Keriang kurang mendapat sambutan pelancong," katanya di sini hari ini.
Jelasnya, MBAS telah membuat beberapa perancangan untuk menjadikan taman tersebut sebagai pusat riadah di bandar raya ini.
"Kita akan mendirikan pagar di sekeliling taman tersebut bagi mengelakkan barang-barang awam di taman tersebut dirosakkan.
"Pengawal keselamatan juga akan ditugaskan menjaga kawasan taman rekreasi ini bagi mengelakkan harta awam dicuri," katanya.
Tambah Khazali, landskap taman di kawasan tersebut juga akan diubah dan ditanam dengan pokok-pokok yang lebih menarik untuk menceriakan tempat tersebut.
"Kita mahu taman ini menjadi salah satu tempat pelancongan popular di bandar ini kerana ia mempunyai daya tarikan yang tersendiri.
"Kita juga akan membina tangga batu untuk membolehkan para pengunjung naik ke puncak Gunung Keriang bagi melihat pemandangan yang menarik di puncak," jelasnya.
Dalam pada itu, kata Khazali, kempen bersih dan indah bandar Alor Setar akan dijalankan secara berterusan bagi memastikan tahap kebersihan bandar ini mencapai tahap yang ditetapkan.
"Dalam tempoh sebulan sebanyak 20 orang awam dikenakan kompaun RM20 kerana didapati bersalah membuang sampah merata-rata.
"Pegawai penguat kuasa MBAS akan sentiasa memantau orang ramai yang sengaja membuang sampah merata-rata untuk mendidik orang ramai supaya prihatin dan tidak berbuat demikian,'' ujarnya.

Peluang melihat bintang, planet di stadium

ALOR SETAR: Orang ramai terutama mereka yang meminati bidang astronomi berpeluang melihat bintang dan planet di cakerawala menerusi teleskop khas yang dibawa Pusat Sains Negara (PSN) sempena Minggu Pembangunan dan Kesedaran Sains dan Inovasi (MPKSI) yang diadakan di Stadium Sultan Abdul Halim di sini, bermula semalam.

Aktiviti cerapan bintang itu akan diadakan selama dua malam berturut-turut bermula semalam, membuka peluang kepada masyarakat khususnya pelajar sekolah luar bandar mendekati bidang astronomi.

Lebih 500 pengunjung menghadiri MPKSI peringkat negeri itu.

MPKSI adalah gabungan program jelajah sains anjuran PSN yang diadakan bagi memberi pendedahan dan kesedaran berkaitan sains dan inovasi kepada golongan luar bandar yang tinggal jauh dari PSN di Kuala Lumpur.

Penolong Pengarah PSN, Shahzari Hussin, berkata misi program ini secara umumnya bertujuan menyemai minat rakyat Malaysia ke arah pembelajaran sains dan teknologi sepanjang hayat.

Katanya, bagi tahun ini Kedah dipilih sebagai negeri yang mewakili zon utara menganjurkan program kelolaan Kementerian Sains, Teknologi dan Inovasi (Mosti), selama enam hari dari jam 9 pagi hingga 6 petang.
“PSN menyediakan pelbagai program menarik kepada pengunjung menerusi bahan pameran dan aktiviti yang disediakan termasuk menguji kecerdasan IQ pengunjung selain bahan bacaan ilmiah berteraskan sains dan teknologi.

"Malah, bagi dua malam pertama, kita menyediakan aktiviti cerapan bintang menggunakan teleskop khas bagi memberi peluang orang ramai meneropong pelbagai planet di cakerawala termasuk zuhal dan marikh.

"Bagaimanapun, aktiviti cerapan bintang itu hanya dijalankan pada jam 10.30 hingga 11 malam bergantung kepada keadaan cuaca. Jika permintaan menggalakkan, aktiviti ini akan diteruskan untuk malam seterusnya," katanya selepas majlis Perasmian MPKSI di sini, semalam.

MPKSI dirasmikan Tunku Bendahara Kedah, Tunku Anuar Sultan Badlishah. Hadir sama, anakanda Sultan Kedah, Datuk Seri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz.

Kedah In Drive To Tap More Singapore Tourists

SINGAPORE, July 28 (Bernama) -- Kedah became the third Malaysian state after Sabah and Sarawak to carry out tourism campaigns in Singapore this year to tap the abundant local and expatriate tourist markets.

Over 30 travel agents, hoteliers and tourism bodies from Langkawi and Alor Setar are now here meeting their local counterparts to introduce Kedah tourism products to Singaporeans who are currently Malaysia's top visitors.

Their three-day tourism promotion campaign here is jointly organised by Tourism Malaysia, Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), the Kedah chapter of Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents Association (Matta) and Kedah Tourism Action Council.

Malaysia's High Commissioner to Singapore Datuk Md Husin Nayan said he hoped other Malaysian states would follow suit to conduct their tourism campaigns here to tap the rich Singapore tourist market.

Tourism Malaysia's Singapore office director Zalizam Zakaria said Malaysia had recorded about 6.1 million tourist arrivals from Singapore in the first six months of this year, and was confident that its target of 11 million for 2009 could be achieved.

Kedah hopes to attract more than 100,000 tourists from the island republic, including expatriates and travellers who are transiting in Singapore, to Langkawi and mainland Kedah this year.

LADA figures showed that nearly 40,000 Singaporean tourists visited Langkawi alone last year compared to nearly 35,000 in 2007.

Singaporeans are expected to throng Kedah when new air services between Singapore and Alor Setar and Langkawi are introduced by budget carriers Firefly and Jetstar in the coming months.

Currently, Singapore's Silk Air, Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia operate more than 30 flights per week between Singapore and Langkawi.

Sail through to victory

IZHAR Ismail (Pahang), Saiful Idham Zainal Nasir (Perak) and Syed Rizal Syed Aluwi (Kelantan), all aged 26, combined their resources to run away with the top prize for the Open Category in the inaugural Alor Setar Heritage Race.

The navy men from Lumut, whose team was called Navy Sail (2), completed the 14km route covering 10 checkpoints in one hour and 27 minutes.

The race was jointly organised by Kuala Lumpur Tower, Alor Setar Tower and Telekom Museum on Saturday.

They received the top prize of RM2,000 and a hamper worth RM300.

Izhar said passers-by helped them by giving the correct directions to each of the checkpoints.

“The only hiccup was finding the Mee Abu checkpoint after leaving the Sultan Abdul Hamid College.

“We took the wrong turn and ended up about 500m away from the route before someone re-directed us back on the right track,” he said.

“It was a good experience for us because we got to know so many historic sites such as Rumah Merdeka, Pekan Rabu, Masjid Zahir, Tun Dr Mahathir’s House, Royal Gallery, Istana Kuning and Merdeka Square. We had only heard and read about these places in the past,” he added.

Kolej Tentera Udara’s (KTU) A and B teams occupied the second and third positions in the race.

The second-placed KTU A team bagged RM1,000 and a hamper worth RM300 while the third-placed team pocketed RM800 and a RM300 hamper.

The Klang-based trio with the tag name Scoreboard, walked away with the top prize in the Invitation category.

Izwan Md Sumari, 27, Mohd Al-Amin Abdul Jalil, 18, and Norazali Rosly, 25, earned RM1000 and a hamper worth RM300.

Izwan said they would stay back for another day to visit all the other historic places at a leisurely pace before returning home.

In second place was the Kuala Lumpur-based Sinar team while the third position went to Tiara, also from Kuala Lumpur.

A total of 300 participants from Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis took part in the race.

Kedah Tourism Action Council chairman Datuk Othman Abdul Aziz flagged off the race with an air horn.

While the Heritage Race was in progress, other events such as a mini concert by local artistes, fun games including colouring pictures for children and an arts and crafts exhibition were held in the Alor Setar Tower premises.

Firefly to link Singapore to Alor Setar and Kota Baru


PETALING JAYA: Firefly has announced the addition of two new flights — to Alor Setar and Kota Baru — from Singapore.

Its marketing and communications head Angelina Fernandez said almost all visitors from Alor Setar and Kota Baru who travel to Singapore for business or leisure only travelled via Penang or Kuala Lumpur, which was time consuming.

“This direct flight will give them the best alternative to travel to Singapore,” she added.

Fernandez also said Thailand would stand to benefit from the new arrivals as it was easily accessible by road from both state capitals.

Expressing gratitude to the Kedah and Kelantan governments for providing access to the “untapped and hidden treasures” of the states, Fernandez said Firefly would work closely with the tourism boards of Malaysia and Singapore to exploit the new routes.

The maiden flights to the state capitals are scheduled for Oct 25 at 11am, departing from the Singapore Budget Terminal Changi.

Flights to Kota Baru will depart four times a week while Alor Setar will have flights every other day.

ALOR SETAR: Seramai 119 penduduk di daerah Kota Star yang tinggal di tanah rizab milik Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) menerima pampasan sewa bulanan dan perpindahan yang berjumlah kira-kira RM1 juta, Jumaat lalu.

Pengurus Besar Pengurusan Projek, Helmi Mohamad, berkata setiap penduduk menerima pampasan sebanyak RM8,200 seorang selepas tanah mereka terbabit dalam projek pembinaan landasan berkembar Ipoh ke Padang Besar.

Beliau berkata, program penyerahan cek pampasan perpindahan dan sewa bulanan itu dijalankan secara berperingkat dan semua penduduk yang terbabit dalam pengambilan tanah akan menerima pampasan mereka.

Katanya, daripada jumlah itu, RM1,000 diberikan untuk tujuan perpindahan manakala bakinya adalah untuk sewa bulan rumah selepas mereka dikehendaki berpindah sebelum 15 Ogos ini.

"Sebanyak RM300 diberikan kepada penduduk selama 24 bulan untuk membolehkan mereka membayar sewa bulanan apabila rumah mereka diroboh nanti.

Sebelum itu semua penduduk sudah bersetuju dan menandatangani surat akujanji bersama KTMB dan pemaju yang bertanggungjawab dalam pelaksanaan projek berkenaan," katanya ketika dihubungi di sini, semalam.

Kelmarin, lebih 300 penduduk menyerbu Pejabat Daerah Kota Star di Lebuhraya Darulaman di sini seawal jam 7 pagi untuk mendapatkan pampasan itu.

Seorang penduduk, Razali Yahya, 62, dari Kampung Limbong Kapal di sini, berkata 43 penduduk dari kampung berkenaan yang terletak dalam tanah rizab KTMB, layak menerima pampasan berkenaan.

“Selepas mengadakan pertemuan dengan pihak bertanggungjawab termasuk KTMB, penduduk bersetuju untuk menerima pampasan yang diberikan kepada mereka.

“Selain wang pampasan untuk berpindah dan sewa bulanan, penduduk juga akan memperoleh 30 peratus wang pampasan nilai rumah dalam tempoh dua tahun ini.

"Saya datang ke sini sejak jam 7.30 pagi untuk mendapatkan cek pampasan ini. Kami perlu berpindah mengikut tempoh yang diberikan sebelum rumah kami dirobohkan untuk kerja pembinaan landasan berkembar.

"Mengikut surat akujanji, dalam tempoh dua tahun pihak bertanggungjawab akan menilai rumah penduduk dan sebanyak 30 peratus daripada hasil nilaian itu akan diberikan kepada penduduk," katanya.

Pesara itu mengucapkan terima kasih kepada KTMB dan pemaju projek yang mengambil berat terhadap kebajikan penduduk selepas hampir setahun mengadakan pertemuan dan perbincangan.

ALOR STAR Alor Star dipilih sebagai Bandar Raya Masa Depan Asia dalam kategori bandar raya kecil di rantau berkenaan, baru-baru ini oleh majalah terkemuka antarabangsa, itu bagi tahun 2007 dan 2008.

Pengiktirafan ke atas ibu negeri Kedah itu mengambil kira beberapa kategori termasuk potensi ekonomi, pelaburan dan perniagaan di bandar raya berkenaan.

Menurut majalah tersebut, Alor Star berada di tangga pertama bagi kelompok enam bandar raya kecil terbaik di Asia diikuti Newcastle (Australia) di tangga kedua, Jeju (Korea Selatan), Taoyuan (Taiwan), Gifu (Jepun) dan Ipswich (Australia).

Sementara itu, bagi anugerah Bandar Raya Masa Depan kategori bandar raya Asia, ia diraih oleh Hong Kong diikuti Singapura, Taipeh (Taiwan), Melbourne (Australia), Dalian (China), Shijiazhuang (China), Bandaraya Quezon (Filipina), Bandaraya Cebu (Filipina), Guangzhou (China) dan Bandaraya Davao (Filipina).

Bagi lima kelompok terbaik kategori potensi ekonomi, Hong Kong berada di depan diikuti Singapura, Dalian (China), Guangzhou (China) dan Quezon (Filipina).

Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak ketika ditanya mengenai kedudukan tersebut, berkata, ia adalah satu penghargaan kepada negeri Kedah yang terbukti berjaya dalam menarik ramai pelabur.

''Ia perkembangan yang baik untuk Kedah dan kita mengharapkan anugerah tersebut akan memastikan negeri ini terus menjadi daya tarikan kepada pelabur," katanya.

THE Chief Executive Officer of world renowned Eiffel Tower, Nicolas Lefebvre, came away impressed after a visit to Kedah’s own Alor Setar Tower.

While there is nothing to shout about in terms of its size in comparison, it is the Kedah tower’s MP4 audio-visual system which caught the VIP’s attention.

The system is used for the convenience of visitors to obtain first hand information on the tower.

After a whirlwind visit to the tower and various historical sites in Alor Setar, Lefebvre said, “I will propose the setting up of such a system at the Eiffel Tower when I return home.”

KEDAH has set its sight on tourists and hope to make foreign visitors a common sight in the state capital from October.

The plan by Alor Setar Tower management is to introduce a premium package for tourists staying in Langkawi to make a one-day trip to Alor Setar.

Kuala Lumpur Tower, Alor Setar Tower and Telekom Museum (KLASTEM) chief executive officer Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad said guests of five-star hotels would be enticed into making a one-day trip to Alor Setar with lunch and dinner thrown-in for RM390 per person.

The Marine Department in Kuah has allocated us a `holding room at the Kuah Jetty where we will assemble the tourists before they are ferried to Kuala Perlis and then to Alor Setar.

While they are in the state capital, they will be taken on a conducted tour to view the various historic sites.

They will return to Langkawi via Kuala Kedah after a stop over in Kuala Kedah to visit the Marina complex and the old Fortress, Zulkifli told journalists here.

A team of officers from the Alor Setar Tower visited five-star hotels in Langkawi and the feed back has been positive, Zulkifli said.

‘‘We are putting the final touches to our plans and are ready to launch it soon,’’ he added.s

Kuala Lumpur Tower, Alor Setar Tower and Telekom Museum (KLASTEM) chief executive officer Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad said guests of five-star hotels would be enticed into making a one-day trip to Alor Setar with lunch and dinner thrown-in for RM390 per person.

The Marine Department in Kuah has allocated us a `holding room at the Kuah Jetty where we will assemble the tourists before they are ferried to Kuala Perlis and then to Alor Setar.

While they are in the state capital, they will be taken on a conducted tour to view the various historic sites.

They will return to Langkawi via Kuala Kedah after a stop over in Kuala Kedah to visit the Marina complex and the old Fortress, Zulkifli told journalists here.

A team of officers from the Alor Setar Tower visited five-star hotels in Langkawi and the feed back has been positive, Zulkifli said.

‘‘We are putting the final touches to our plans and are ready to launch it soon,’’ he added.s

Sultan Kedah Opens Villa Seri Tuanku


ALOR SETAR, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- Luxury living in a village ambience -- this is the housing project concept of Villa Seri Tunku in Anak Bukit here.

Twenty-seven modern village bungalow units adjacent to Istana anak Bukit have been completed. The units, priced between RM400,000 and RM1.2 million, have been sold out.

The Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, opened the project Tuesday.

Antara Awan Sdn Bhd chairman Datuk Tuanku Ahmad Zahir Tunku Ibrahim said the modern village, the first of its kind to be built in this area, received overwhelming response, with all the units snapped up in a short period.

He said the company would also build a commercial complex called "Plaza Sri Tunku" at Taman Tasik Darulaman in Jitra.

Work is expected to start by year-end, he said.

Present were the Raja Muda of Kedah, Tuanku Abdul Malik Mu'azam Shah, and princess Tuanku Intan Syafinaz.

Kedah mahu bina 'townhouse'

ALOR SETAR 6 Ogos - Kerajaan Negeri Kedah akan membina rumah berkonsepkan 'townhouse' bagi mengurangkan penggunaan tanah dalam projek pembangunan perumahan.

Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak berkata, konsep tersebut perlu dilaksanakan bagi mengimbangi penggunaan tanah di negeri Kedah.

''Konsep rumah 'townhouse' juga dapat mengelakkan pembangunan tidak terancang di negeri ini.

''Biarpun konsep ini agak janggal bagi penduduk negeri ini, ia wajar dilaksanakan kerana rumah jenis ini banyak dibina di bandar-bandar besar kerana masalah tanah,'' ujarnya.

Beliau berkata demikian kepada pemberita selepas merasmikan Ekspo Hartanah Malaysia (MAPEX 2009) peringkat Kedah di Alor Setar Mall di sini selama tiga hari mulai hari ini hingga Ahad.

Turut hadir Pengerusi Persatuan Pemaju Hartanah dan Perumahan Malaysia (REHDA) cawangan Kedah/Perlis, Ricque Liew Yin Chew.

Menurut Azizan, menerusi konsep itu rumah dibina dua tingkat berbanding ketika ini hanya dibina setingkat.

oh really?hahaha..we should meet someday..Btw, Star-city will be the next attraction place to shop. But as you said, Tesco at Stargate pun tak nampak bayang lagi. If I'm not mistaken, there will be 5 phases and it takes around 10years to completed. Phase 2 nanti akan ada Autocity and I think Tesco also will be built at this stage.
About in front of Sime Tyres Mergong, I think the project is Taman Tuanku Haminah, same developer in SPetani (Taman Ria Jaya area). Kompleks Tunku Yaacob akan dibina semula oleh Belleview and I think this time project will be successful. Dah lama sangat terbengkalai. It's time for big transformation.
I also notice about the project at Jalan Tambang Badak. Dah on balik. But not sure what project it is. Hope it will be hotel or office building.
Building kat Jalan Kanchut tu I think it belongs to some persatuan melayu kot. The progress on that building also quite slow and Police HQ pun lambat jugak but still under construction. Dataran Usahawan also now at 2nd storey.
In my observation, a lot of empty land around Alor Setar city should be developed. Jalan Limbong Kapal pun perlukan pembangunan. Dah lama sgt terbiar mcm tu saja without any development planning. Hope next few years, Alor Setar boleh jadi setaraf dengan bandaraya2 lain di M'sia. :banana:

It's only three stories building with underground basement for parking space.

What exactly a town house actually? Anak Bukit is becoming somewhat a residential area located on the outskirt of the city.

5-10 years from now, the people at these residential areas will then start to complaint and force the Gov to move the airport to somewhere else because of the noise. I mean it's not fair really. The developers are still building new houses within the radius of the airport although they knew the airport causes a lot of noise. Who knows, when it is time we need to expand our airport, we dont have enough room for expansion because of the residential areas.

I love my airport. It's one of a kind. Where in the world you can find an airport sitting in a lush green of paddy field? Reclaimed land airport? That you can find plenty; HKG, KIX, NGO, NGS etc.

Parkson to raise retail space by 11pc

MALAYSIA'S largest department store operator Parkson Corp Sdn Bhd will increase its total retail space by 11 per cent this year with the addition of four new stores.

The four new openings, costing some RM18 million to RM20 million, will see Parkson operating 36 stores with a combined retail space of 3.7 million sq ft.

New openings this month include Parkson Kota Baru Trade Centre (100,000 sq ft) and Parkson 1 Borneo (110,000 sq ft).

Parkson Kluang Parade (83,000 sq ft) will open in the fourth quarter and four months ago it started operating in Batu Pahat, Johor.

With the exception of 1 Borneo, the other three outlets are in a new market area, its chief operating officer Toh Peng Koon said.

"We hope to establish a strong customer base in these new markets of Batu Pahat, Kota Baru and Kluang," he added.

"The 1 Borneo outlet allows us to further enhance our leading position in Kota Kinabalu. This outlet is situated in the suburb and will complement our existing outlet downtown," Toh told Business Times.

Parkson Malaysia, whose same store growth average is around 4 per cent, makes up about a quarter of Parkson Holdings' gross sales.

On future openings, Parkson aims to be represented in places like Alor Star, Kedah, and other towns in Sabah and Sarawak.

Beyond 2009, Parkson has confirmed openings at Festival Mall on Jalan Genting Klang (2010), KK Times Square (2010/2011) and Plaza Merdeka Kuching (2012).

"In some towns where we have existing operations, we are looking for new opportunities to further enhance our presence and market share, either as replacement or addition to existing operations," he said.

In fact, it has plans to close its stand-alone store in Kuantan Plaza as consumers prefer to shop at malls. In anticipation of the closure, the Parkson East Coast Mall was set up last year.

Meanwhile, the first shopping mall that it will own and operate located on Jalan Genting Klang, Kuala Lumpur, is expected to commence operations in the third quarter of 2010.

"The mall will be named Festival Mall. It has a net lettable area of 500,000 sq ft and is expected to provide an annual yield of 8 per cent to 9 per cent," he said.

In Southeast Asia, Parkson also has a presence in Vietnam with five outlets. It plans to open the sixth Parkson before year-end. These outlets have been posting a like-for-like growth of between 15 per cent to 20 per cent.

Its next stop in the region is in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in 2010/2011.

Don't worry mate, Parkson has shown their interest to be the anchor tenant for the new shopping complex to be developed by Belleview. Another great news was, Belleview already confirmed that lots of interest by international tenants to be part of the new complex.

The only setback is it will only take place many years to come. Anything can happened, just wait and see or make your self comfortable to drive one hour plus to penang if you want to have a new shopping experience!:lol:

Hope Parkson corporation put a trust on Kedah as potential place to be invest. I think some of investors do not know how potential Kedah is. Anyone knows about Star-City project because if I'm not mistaken, Jaya Jusco will be an anchor tenant once the building is completed. But I'm not sure how true the info is. Parkson and Aeon definitely will give a big impact to "shopping infrastructure" in Kedah and I hope Alor Setar n Sg Petani will have each of them.

Yes. I think it's time for a big transformation in Kedah especially in improving new shopping malls and hotels. Regarding project at Alor Setar, I'm not so sure about the status coz I'm not staying there. Both projects are still at early phase. Only shoplots are ready for opening. But for Aeon or Tesco, the construction only will begin in 2nd or 3rd phase. Maybe someone out there knows about those project. Hopefully they can expedite the plan. So we have no more worries if we want to go to shop and dont need to go to Penang anymore.:cheers:

Yeah, JPJ will soon be relocating there. I mean they're probably setting up Suka Menanti as somewhat a Government offices area.

I am from Jitra and currently staying in Penang. I love Alor Setar very much and hope it will develope much more faster.

Actually, if we compare the brochure and their presentation slide (i've seen the slide before), totally different. Dalam slide tu, much2 exciting and u can see the autocity, hotels, shopping mall and more. Why different?

Kedah rancang sifar setinggan bandar

ALOR SETAR 8 Okt. – Kerajaan negeri merancang untuk menjadikan bandar raya ini dan bandar Sungai Petani sebagai setinggan sifar dengan menyediakan rumah kos rendah mampu milik kepada rakyat.
Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak berkata, pihaknya sedang mencari lokasi dan tapak yang sesuai untuk membina rumah kos rendah berkenaan agar dapat mewujudkan penempatan yang lebih selesa, selamat dan tersusun kepada golongan itu.
Katanya, kerajaan negeri telah menghubungi syarikat berkaitan kerajaan (GLC) yang berkelayakan untuk melaksanakan projek tersebut secara berperingkat.
“Saya juga telah mengarahkan pihak kerajaan tempatan supaya berhubung dengan Kerajaan Persekutuan bagi mendapatkan bantuan untuk menyediakan rumah kos rendah,” katanya di sini semalam.
Azizan berkata, lokasi yang bakal dipilih untuk membina rumah kos rendah bagi penduduk setinggan tersebut akan mengambil kira tempat mereka berkerja pada masa ini.
Katanya, ia bagi memudahkan golongan berkenaan meneruskan kerja masing-masing tanpa perlu berpindah jauh dari tempat mereka mencari makan.
“Sebagai contoh, kita boleh buat kos rendah itu di luar Alor Setar tetapi selama ini mereka mencari makan di bandar raya ini, tetapi itu tiada makna. Nanti ia akan menimbulkan masalah dan membebankan mereka,” katanya.

Kompleks LKIM Kuala Kedah boleh diguna bulan depan

ALOR SETAR: Kompleks Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia (LKIM) di Kampung Kuala Kelonchor, Kuala Kedah, yang siap tiga tahun lalu dijangka dapat digunakan mulai bulan depan.

Pengarah LKIM Kedah, Mohd Noor Had, berkata Majlis Bandaraya Alor Setar (MBAS) dijangka mengeluarkan Sijil Layak Menduduki (CF) akhir bulan ini selepas masalah membabitkan konsultan dan kontraktor yang membinanya selesai.

Kompleks berharga RM50 juta itu dibina di kawasan seluas 14 hetkar sebagai pusat pendaratan ikan bagi menggantikan jeti pendaratan di muara Sungai Kuala Kedah yang tidak sesuai digunakan lagi.

Menteri Pertanian dan Industri Asas Tani, Datuk Noh Omar, mengadakan lawatan ke kompleks itu Khamis lalu, kecewa dengan masalah tersebut dan mengarahkan supaya ia diselesaikan segera.

"LKIM telah mengambil tindakan sewajarnya membawa pihak-pihak terbabit berbincang dan CF dijangka diperolehi pada hujung bulan ini," katanya kepada pemberita pada majlis ramah mesra Aidilfitri LKIM Kedah di kompleks itu, hari ini.

Pengerusi LKIM, Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail dan pegawai dari agensi di bawah Kementerian Pertanian dan Industri Asas Tani menghadiri majlis itu.
Mohd Noor berkata, selepas mendapat CF, pihaknya akan melengkapkan kompleks itu dengan prasarana bagi memudahkan nelayan berurusan bagi menampung purata 30 hingga 40 buah bot ikan mendaratkan hasil tangkapan setiap hari.

Katanya, sebuah jeti pendaratan ikan untuk bot-bot kecil berharga RM2.5 juta juga akan dibina 200 meter dari kompleks itu dan dijangka dapat digunakan pada pertengahan tahun depan.

"Operasi kompleks baru ini juga bermakna semua urusan berkaitan nelayan termasuk bekalan minyak diesel dan petrol subsidi hanya boleh diperolehi di situ yang sebelum ini boleh didapati di beberapa stesen yang dilesenkan di Kuala Kedah," katanya. - Bernama

Pejabat Imigresen Kedah berpindah 15 Oktober depan

ALOR SETAR: Pejabat Jabatan Imigresen negeri Kedah di sini akan ditutup selama tiga hari mulai 15 Oktober ini untuk memberi laluan kepada kerja-kerja perpindahan ke pejabat baru di Bandar Muadzam Shah.

Jabatan itu, dalam satu kenyataan kepada Bernama di sini hari ini, berkata Jabatan Imigesen negeri tidak lagi beroperasi di Wisma Persekutuan di sini mulai tarikh 15 Oktober ini.

Katanya, jabatan itu akan dibuka semula ada 18 Oktober dan beroperasi di pejabat baru di Tingkat 1-2 Bangunan Kementerian Dalam Negeri, Pusat Pentadbiran Kerajaan Persekutuan di Bandar Muaadzam Shah di sini.

Beliau berkata, orang ramai yang mahu berurusan dengan Jabatan Imigresen bagi tempoh tiga hari itu boleh mengunjungi Pejabat Imigresen cawangan di Bukit Kayu Hitam, Sungai Petani atau Pejabat Imigresen Langkawi.

"Orang ramai juga boleh mengunjungi pejabat-pejabat Imigresen negeri lain seperti Jabatan Imigresen Pulau Pinang, Jabatan Imigresen Perlis atau mana-mana yang berhampiran dengan tempat mereka," menurut kenyataan itu.

RM4 Juta Untuk Baikpulih Menara Alor Setar



ALOR SETAR, 15 Okt (Bernama) -- Sebanyak RM4 juta diperuntukkan bagi kerja-kerja membaikpulih Menara Alor Setar di sini tidak lama lagi supaya mercu tanda Kedah itu terus menjadi daya tarikan pelancong.

Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif Menara Kuala Lumpur Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad berkata, peruntukan itu adalah untuk penyelenggaran lif, kerja-kerja mengecat semula menara dan mewujudkan lebih banyak kiosk perniagaan menjual cenderahati kepada pengunjung.

"Struktur lif Menara Alor Setar berbeza dengan Menara Kuala Lumpur kerana ia berada di bahagian luar dan terdedah kepada cuaca. Oleh itu, ia perlu sentiasa diselenggara supaya dapat memberikan perkhidmatan terbaik kepada pengunjung, "katanya kepada pemberita di sini Khamis.

Katanya untuk menjadi simbol pelancongan bertaraf dunia, Menara Alor Setar harus berubah bermula dengan perkara asas seperti layanan terhadap pengunjung sehingga perkara infrastruktur.

Sementara itu, Datuk Bandar Datuk Khazali Din berkata Majlis Bandaraya Alor Setar bercadang untuk bekerjasama dengan Menara Alor Setar bagi mewujudkan semula perkhidmatan beca yang semakin pupus.

"Kita dalam perancangan untuk mewujudkan semula perkhidmatan beca bermula di Menara Alor Setar untuk membawa pelancong ke kawasan sekitar seperti Masjid Zahir, Pekan Rabu, Galeri Diraja dan kawasan sekitar," kata Zulkifli.

Katanya, apabila dilaksanakan kelak, ia diharap dapat menjadi satu tarikan pelancongan di samping kemudahan pengangkutan yang unik di bandar raya itu.

Menara Alor Setar setinggi 165 meter itu mula beroperasi pada tahun 1997 dan ia merupakan menara ke-19 tertinggi di dunia.

Tower to get new paint job

WORK to upgrade facilities at the Alor Setar Tower will be completed by February.
Kuala Lumpur-Alor Setar Tower and Telekom Malaysia (TM) Museum chief executive officer Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad said RM4mil had been allocated for the project.
He said this when he visited Alor Star for the International Tower Base Jump on Wednesday.
Zulkifli said among others, the tower would be given a fresh coat of paint while the two lifts would be serviced and upgraded.
He said the carpet at the dining hall of the top deck would be replaced.
He added that work on the water-proofing of the pool at the base of the tower would also be done.
He said the tower management was in consultation with the state Tourism Action Council to acquire 10 trishaws to be based at the tower to transport tourists from the tower to the various tourist destinations in the city like the State Museum, Royal Gallery, Pekan Rabu, Dr Mahathir’s house, Merdeka House and Art Gallery.
The tourists who visit these places will also be briefed on the availability of other tourist spots in the state like the Padi Museum, Bujang Valley and tree-top walk in Sedim.

ALOR SETAR – Dengan termetarainya perjanjian antara Pihak Berkuasa Tempatan (PBT) Negeri Kedah dan Environment Idaman Sdn. Bhd., maka pengurusan sisa pepejal dan pembersihan awam di negeri Kedah dapat diperbaiki lagi.

Perjanjian yang amat bermakna bagi kedua-dua pihak ini telah berlangsung di Wisma Darul Aman, di sini yang disaksikan oleh Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan, YB. Dato’ Ir Haji Phahrolrazi Haji Zawawi.
Menurut beliau, pengambilalihan operasi sepenuhnya secara interim akan bermula 1 November 2009 dan diharap kerjasama ini dapat memulihkan imej negeri Kedah.
“Kedah mendahului empat negeri di Utara, iaitu Perlis, Perak dan Pulau Pinang dalam penswastaan pengurusan sisa pepejal dan pengurusan sampah.
“Pelbagai rintangan dan halangan diterima daripada pelbagai pihak berhubung tahap kecekapan dalam menjalankan kerja-kerja pengurusan sisa pepejal di negeri ini, hari ini isu-isu tersebut dapat ditangani dengan termeterainya perjanjian ini,” ujar beliau.
Tambah beliau, apabila berlakunya penswastaan, bagi pekerja yang sedia bekerja dengan (PBT), tiada sebarang pemberhentian, sebaliknya mereka diberi tiga pilihan, iaitu bersara secara sukarela, masih bekerja tetapi boleh memohon dengan menggunakan skim baru dengan syarikat E-Idaman Sdn Bhd dengan tawaran gaji yang tinggi, ataupun menggunakan skim serta kemudahan yang sama dengan kerajaan.
“Sebahagian besar pekerja bersetuju untuk bertugas dengan E-Idaman, pada hari ini lima PBT telah tandatangan iaitu, Majlis Bandaraya Alor Setar, Majlis Daerah Kubang Pasu, Majlis Daerah Sik, Majlis Daerah Padang Terap dan Majlis PBT Kulim Hi Tech, yang baki akan tandatangan selewat-lewatnya akhir bulan ini.
Dalam perkembangan lain, menurut Pengarah E-Idaman Sdn Bhd, YBhg. Dato’ Azmil Khalili Khalid, pihak syarikat turut menubuhkan skuad ‘First Response Team’ yang dinamakan sebagai Skuad Idaman untuk bertindak sebagai pasukan gerak cepat untuk memastikan setiap aduan dapat di atasi dengan dengan kadar segera.
“Kami turut mewujudkan talian aduan hotline, iaitu 1-800-88-ENVI atau 1-800-88-3684 untuk memudahkan masyarakat membuat sebarang aduan, talian ini akan berkuatkuasa pada 1 November 2009,” ujar beliau.

Perkenal semula lokasi bersejarah

ALOR SETAR 31 Okt. – Tahap kesedaran dan kecintaan masyarakat terhadap lokasi yang mempunyai warisan sejarah dan budaya perlu diperkasakan agar ia tidak tenggelam ditelan zaman.
Pengerusi Majlis Tindakan Pelancongan Negeri Kedah (MTPNK), Datuk Othman Aziz berkata, jika lokasi berkenaan tidak diperkenalkan semula, tidak mustahil ia dilupakan dan hanya tinggal nama sahaja.
Katanya, semua warisan dan lokasi bersejarah perlu dijaga pada setiap masa supaya ia terus kekal dan dipertahankan untuk tatapan generasi akan datang sekali gus menjadikannya sebagai produk pelancongan tersohor.
“Sekiranya tiada usaha termasuk memperkenalkannya semula, tidak mustahil usaha mengekalkan tapak bersejarah bagi memperingati sesuatu peristiwa dilenyap ditelan zaman.
“Sedangkan tempat-tempat ini berpotensi sebagai kawasan pelancongan menarik,” katanya kepada Mingguan Malaysia selepas merasmikan seminar sejarah dan aktiviti pelancongan negeri di Taman Budaya Negeri di sini hari ini.
Seminar dengan kerjasama Persatuan Sejarah Malaysia Cawangan Kedah (PSMCK) itu bertujuan memberikan maklumat kepada para peserta yang terdiri daripada pelbagai golongan termasuk pemandu pelancong, guru dan peminat sejarah.
Othman berkata, dalam soal menggerakkan produk pelancongan berasaskan kawasan bersejarah, negeri ini masih kekurangan pemandu pelancong yang benar-benar faham dan mahir mengenai lokasi tersebut.

The roundabout is usually the cause of traffic congestion in big cities. KL has been doing away with almost all its roundabouts and replaced them with flyovers, tunnels and traffic lights. I think this Telok Wanjah Bulatan will probably make way for traffic lights after the construction of flyover is completed. If that is the case, I will miss it and the beautiful fountain - had witnessed them taking shape in the 60s (the roundabout) and early 70s (the fountain) when I was still a kid. Thanks for updating us - always love to hear my home town's news - having been away from it for the past 30 years.

Oledi approved, infact Alor Setar not just getting one flyover but two! The other flyover is at Jalan Sultanah near the mosque which also crossing the railway line.

The existing fountain at Jalan Teluk Wanjah will be shifted to the near entrance of Sultan Abdul Halim airport terminal.

The reason why the fountain not being demolish was due to The Sultan's wish (hearsay, if I'm wrong, Maafkan hamba Tuanku!)

Pembinaan stesen tersebut adalah susulan daripada projek landasan keretapi elektrik berkembar yang bernilai RM 12.5 billion ini melibatkan sejauh 329 kilometer antara Ipoh dan Padang Besar dan ia dibahagikan kepada lapan pakej merentasi Perak, Pulau Pinang, Kedah serta Perlis dan bakal disiapkan pada 2013.

Bagi konsep rekabentuk Stesen DiRaja Anak Bukit, KDYMM Tuanku Sultan telah berkenan dengan penggunaan cermin kaca yang luas pada setiap fasad. Fasad ini akan memberi penampilan baru serta kelihatan lebih moden. Bumbung rata yang moden digabungkan dengan kubah ‘Islamic’ memberi ciri lebih dinamik.

Kedah negeri kelima catat pelaburan tertinggi
ALOR SETAR 17 Nov. - Kelembapan ekonomi dunia tidak menghalang Kedah menarik banyak pelaburan sehingga menjadi negeri kelima mencatat jumlah pelaburan tertinggi selepas Sarawak, Selangor, Johor dan Pulau Pinang sehingga Ogos lalu.

Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak memberitahu, ia melibatkan pelaburan berjumlah RM837,345,329 selepas keadaan ekonomi dunia tidak menentu yang mengurangkan kemasukan pelaburan dalam bidang pembuatan.

"Dalam pelancongan, Kedah mencatat kemasukan 3.8 juta orang pada 2008 berbanding 3 juta pada 2006 dan kerajaan negeri berazam meningkatkan lagi jumlah itu kepada 4 juta orang pada 2010," kata beliau ketika menyampaikan ucapan Bajet 2010 di DUN Kedah di sini hari ini.

Sementara itu, katanya, sehingga Oktober 2009, kerajaan negeri berjaya mengutip hasil RM211.6 juta daripada anggaran hasil RM480 juta dan menyedari pengurangan kutipan hasil disebabkan pemberian rebat 50 peratus yang berkuat kuasa tahun ini.

"Pengurangan hasil tanah juga berjaya ditampung melalui peningkatan hasil melibatkan kenaikan kutipan royalti bahan batuan sebanyak RM19 juta tahun ini kerana usaha penguatkuasaan dan pengurusan rapi pejabat-pejabat tanah.

"Kenaikan hasil balak daripada RM8 juta setahun kepada RM35 juta pada 2009 kerana polisi atau dasar tender terbuka yang diamalkan kerajaan negeri," jelasnya.

Selain itu, kata Azizan, ia melibatkan dividen atas sumbangan daripada 11 buah syarikat berkaitan kerajaan (GLC) kepada kerajaan negeri sebanyak RM30 juta.

"Ia merupakan pembayaran pertama kali diterima selepas penyusunan semula GLC yang berjaya meningkatkan aktiviti dan keuntungan," kata beliau.

Azizan menjelaskan, Unit Perancang Ekonomi (EPU) Jabatan Perdana Menteri memperjelaskan bahawa dari 2004 sehingga 2009, kadar kemiskinan di Kedah berkurangan daripada tujuh peratus kepada tiga peratus.

"Kadar kemiskinan tegar berkurangan daripada 1.3 peratus kepada 0.3 peratus, pendapatan kasar bulanan isi rumah meningkat daripada RM2,126 kepada RM2,408, kadar pengangguran berkurangan daripada 3.8 peratus kepada 3.3 peratus," katanya.

Zulhelmi, what is CBD? Anyway, i am excited too that AEON will have it's mall in AS (hopefully that will materialise). I am a bit dissapointed that the 2nd Tesco has not yet started. Have they scrapped the project due to 2nd Tesco in Sungai Petani that has been opened.

CBD stands for Central Business District. Aeon Alor Setar is really big. Will it be bigger than Aeon Bukit Indah?
I hope Aeon will set up a mall in Kuching one day. Is it possible?:?

AS alone the population only around 200K but if include surrounding areas the population could go as high 400K.

4 yr info Jitra is only 18km from AS with population around 70K and purchasing power in AS, I would say quite low but it's hard to determine. Sometimes I can see Alor Setarian do have purchasing power since they are willing to travel to Penang and KL just for shopping and leisure.

Maybe it is because some property player and owner and also the government in AS do not care enough to fork out some RM to create a different atmosphere in shopping that could bring more people to their place:ohno:

Agree to that, Alor Setar is somewhat an underserved market. It's not just shopping, it's everything. And also the mentality of the citizens. I mean, if anything just go to Penang, they have everything.

A cardiac surgeon who once rented a house near me worked at KMC. He decided to move to Penang since most people go there, including the people of Alor Setar. They dont realised that the same service is available at the back of their own backyard.

I think AS deserves the big malls to serve not only its population and the surrounding towns but also the people of Perlis. Recent news revealed that the Perlis government would not allow any hypermarket to be set up in the state. Further, the Kedah Government and the AS City Council have to ensure that economic activities such as light industries, tourism and services are continued to be set up or promoted in AS so that more people will live in AS. Also, more educational institutions should be attracted to be set up in the city.

Talking about educational institution, the ongoing Al-Bukhray International Islamic University project is almost done since they have already removed their fences. I can really see that it is quite a campus.

Exactly....we should not underestimate the purchasing power of Alor Setarian....Cos i always heard people going to Penang and KL just to get themselves some branded items such as clothes, shoes, handbags.. and even entertainment......food.....
Thus, the private sectors should have taken up the opportunities to create a better shopping heaven for the people...and it might be a wise investment....

i am indeed very impressed with the spirit of kedah people..so eager with the development of their places..

unlike the people of my lousy hometown,seremban..they just don't seem to care about the development of their place at all..when the aeon jusco seremban was still under construction a few years ago, nobody seemed to care about it..some did not even know about it..

now carrefour is under construction and even almost done..yet, they don't seem to care at all..

Yep, but the issue is currently being resolve, since the cleanliness of the city was handed over to a private company.

Yes, I agree with Johnson that Syed Razak was instrumental in a lot of development for AS. Interestingly enough, it was during his tenure as MB that Alor Star was accorded city status

Ground work on new flyover at jalan sultanah already started. All trees already been chopped.

Maybe Jalan Teluk Wan Jah flyover construction will come soon.

A bazaar at Alor Setar Tower every Friday and Saturday


THE management of the landmark Alor Setar Tower, is promoting the ‘1Malaysia’ concept by organising a weekly bazaar with a multi-racial background at its premises in Kedah.

The bazaar would group together traders of various races at the tower between 6pm and midnight every Friday and Saturday.

The Tower’s general manager Mazlan Mahmud launched the bazaar last Friday amidst a fanfare of drums, flutes and a lion dance, representing a cross section of the communities in the state capital.

Tan Kan Tit and Rosle Ngah were responsible in assisting Mazlan to engage the local traders to set up stalls.

Mazlan told a press conference that he conceived the idea of a multi-racial bazar to liven the night life in the city and the idea to assemble traders of the various races under one roof by using the Tower as the focal point of interest came naturally.

The response was tremendous as 180 businessmen had registered to trade there.

‘‘So far the applications have been from the Chinese and Malay traders only but we hope their Indian counterparts can join in. We are trying to engage them. There is still room for another 20 lots and I hope the Indians will come and take up the remaining ones to make it a truly 1Malaysia bazaar.’’

The tower management will also arrange for multi-racial arts and cultural shows, karaoke sessions, self defence art displays, wayang kulit, fashion shows and handicraft sales to make the venue livelier.

During the bazaar’s opening hours, visitors who wish to go up the tower to have an aerial view of the city, can also do so at a discounted price of RM4 (the normal price is RM6), he said

Zawawi berkata, keputusan itu dibuat selepas pihaknya mengadakan perjumpaan serta perbincangan dengan wakil-wakil Pertubuhan Bukan Kerajaan (NGO) dan parti-parti politik pelbagai kaum.

"Tangguh dulu pelaksanaan kuota 50 peratus ini sebab nampak ada pihak tak puas hati dengan dasar ini dan kita akan cari kaedah yang lebih munasabah untuk menyelesaikan masalah ini.

"Kita tak mahu ada yang kata dasar yang dibuat ini, tidak adil dan isu perumahan jadi berlarutan, sebab kuota 50 peratus tu bukan dasar umum, yang beri gambaran seolah-olah semua keadaan tanah mesti ada 50 peratus kuota untuk bumiputera," katanya ketika ditemui pemberita di Wisma Darul Aman di sini.

Katanya, kerajaan negeri menetapkan dasar berkenaan bagi tanah rizab Melayu yang ditukar ganti menjadi milik bebas bagi memastikan rumah yang dibina dapat dimiliki semua golongan rakyat, di samping menggambarkan penempatan berbilang bangsa berdasarkan komposisi kaum di kawasan berkenaan.

Phahrolrazi berkata, penetapan kuota berkenaan juga perlu dilihat dari pelbagai aspek supaya ia tidak menjadi isu kerana hasrat kerajaan adalah untuk menjamin semua golongan rakyat boleh memiliki rumah pada harga mampu milik di sesuatu penempatan.

"Yang penting, kerajaan juga nak jamin kaum bukan Melayu yang duduk dalam kawasan Rizab Melayu ni, ada rumah dan kita tak bagi tukar ganti atau swap tanah sewenang-wenangnya kalau tidak ada keperluan," katanya.

Sebelum ini, Menteri Besar Kedah, Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak, mengumumkan kerajaan negeri menaikkan peratusan kuota Bumiputera bagi pemilikan perumahan di Kedah, daripada 30 peratus kepada 50 peratus berkuat kuasa 1 September tahun lalu.

Azizan berkata, keputusan berkenaan dibuat memandangkan bilangan kaum Melayu atau Bumiputera adalah 1.5 juta daripada 1.9 juta rakyat Kedah, maka menurutnya wajarlah diimbangkan dengan polisi tersebut.

Pengumuman dasar baru berkenaan mengundang rasa tidak puas hati serta bantahan dari pelbagai pihak termasuk parti-parti politik dan NGO di negeri ini. - BERNAMA

ALOR SETAR 4 Dis. — Galeri untuk memasarkan produk kraftangan penjara akan dibuka di Jalan Pegawai di sini pada awal tahun depan bagi memudahkan jualan produk penjara yang semakin bertambah.

Pengarah Bahagian Vokasional dan Industri, Jabatan Penjara Malayaia, Wan Abdul Rahman Abdullah berkata galeri itu akan menempatkan pelbagai produk termasuk kraftangan kayu, tenunan, jahitan serta produk makanan.

"Galeri ini dibuka bagi memudahkan orang ramai membeli produk penjara kerana sebelum ini mereka hanya boleh membeli produk-produk ini semasa kita membuat pameran sahaja,” katanya selepas majlis perasmian hari kraftangan penjara di sini. - Bernama

Dua pakej pelancongan baru promosi Kedah

ALOR SETAR 17 Dis. - Tourism Malaysia Kedah memperkenalkan dua pakej pelancongan terbaru iaitu 'Royal Heritage Trail' dan 'Alor Setar City Tour' bagi menarik lebih ramai pelancong melawat negeri ini.

Pengarah Tourism Malaysia Kedah, Roslan Othman berkata, pakej yang dimulakan sejak Mac lalu mula mendapat perhatian yang amat menggalakkan daripada para pelancong asing serta tempatan.

"Kami sasarkan mereka yang terlibat dalam industri perhotelan untuk mempromosikan pakej ini kepada para pelancong yang berminat.

"Kami akan meletakkan maklumat mengenai pakej ini di setiap hotel di bandar raya ini bagi memudahkan para pelancong yang mahu mengikuti pakej ini," katanya di sini hari ini.

Menurutnya, di dalam pakej 'Royal Heritage Trail' para pelancong berpeluang untuk melihat sendiri tempat-tempat menarik yang mempunyai kaitan dengan sejarah Kesultanan Melayu Kedah.

"Sejarah Kesultanan Melayu Kedah adalah cukup panjang dan kita mahu orang ramai merasai sendiri keunikan sejarah Kesultanan Melayu Kedah.

"Antara tempat menarik yang dicadangkan di dalam pakej ini adalah lawatan ke Istana Kuning, Balai Besar, Balai Nobat, Rumah Merdeka, Taman Jubli dan Istana Anak Bukit," uj.

Jelasnya, di dalam pakej 'Alor Star City Tour' pula, masa yang diperlukan untuk melawat tempat-tempat yang dicadangkan di dalam pakej ini ialah kurang daripada setengah hari sahaja.

"Antara tempat-tempat menarik yang terlibat adalah Rumah Kelahiran Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, muzium-muzium di sekitar Alor Setar, Taman Rekreasi Gunung Keriang, Pusat Sains serta Muzium Padi," katanya.

Tambah Roslan, pihaknya menyasarkan untuk mempromosikan dua pakej ini kepada pelancong daripada Thailand, Korea, Arab, Singapura dan pelancong tempatan

No Water Tariff Increase in Kedah For Now - Azizan



ALOR SETAR, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- The state government has yet to decide on the new water tariff following the corporatisation of the state's water supply department, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said.

He said that at the moment, Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada), was focusing on improving the supply, including carrying out repairs on old pipes.

"Right now, we are not thinking about any tariff increase. What we are focusing on is how to improve the service to the people," he told reporters after chairing the weekly state executive council meeting Wednesday.

He added that any increase in the tariff would only be decided by Sada board of directors after the piping system was repaired.

He was commenting on the statement by Kedah Umno, which voiced out strong objection to any possible increase in the water tariff following the move to corporatise the state water supply department.

Azizan also announced that former Sik district officer Azmi Din had been appointed Sada chief executive officer effective Jan 1.

FAMA Tambah Tujuh Pasar Tani Di Kedah Sepanjang 2010



ALOR SETAR, 5 Jan (Bernama) -- Lembaga Pemasaran Pertanian Persekutuan (FAMA) akan tambah tujuh lagi pasar tani di Kedah mulai Januari pada tahun ini.

Menurut Timbalan Pengarah FAMA (Pembangunan) Kedah, Yazid Yusob tujuh pasar tani itu bakal beroperasi meliputi enam pasar tani mingguan dan sebuah pasar tani harian.

Sebuah pasar tani harian akan dibuka di Pekan Sik mulai Januari dan dianggarkan penjualaan dapat mencatat sebanyak RM60,000 sehari, katanya.

Yazid berkata enam pasar tani mingguan yang akan beroperasi pada tahun ini ialah di Padang Mat Sirat, Langkawi (awal Januari), PPR Paya Nahu, Kuala Muda (April), Changlun (Jun), Sungai Karangan, Kulim (Oktober), Pekan Pokok Sena (November) dan Pasar Tani Jerlun (Disember).

"Nilai perbelanjaan oleh orang ramai di sebuah pasar tani mingguan boleh mencecah RM7,000, dan sehingga ini sebanyak 15 pasar tani mingguan telah beroperasi di Kedah," katanya.

Sesiapa yang berminat berniaga di pasar tani di kawasan baru yang dikendalikan FAMA bolehlah memohon menerusi borang yang disediakan oleh semua pejabat agensi pemasaran itu, kata Yazid.

Rakan Muda Dan Menara Alor Setar Anjur Program Promosi Bandar Raya



ALOR SETAR, 30 Dis (Bernama) -- Seratus peserta menyertai satu pertandingan ala 'Explorace' anjuran bersama Rakan Muda dan Menara Alor Setar yang bertujuan untuk mempromosikan bandar raya Alor Setar, Rabu.

Pegawai Belia dan Sukan (JBS) Daerah Kota Setar, Norhalida Kamaludin berkata program hari ini menyaksikan para peserta yang dibahagikan kepada 25 kumpulan bergerak ke tujuh stesen yang ditetapkan.

Beliau berkata antara stesen yang perlu dilalui mereka dalam perjalanan sejauh 26 kilometer itu termasuk Muzium Negeri, Rumah Kelahiran Tun Dr Mahathir, Pekan Rabu, Stesen Kereta Api, Unitar, Perpustakaan Negeri dan Pasaraya Star Parade.

"Mereka perlu melalui semua stesen ini sebelum kembali untuk menamatkan perlumbaan di Menara ini," katanya kepada pemberita ketika ditemui di Menara Alor Setar di sini hari ini.

Beliau berkata perlumbaan itu membabitkan remaja berumur antara 15 dan 25 tahun, dan pasukan yang menang membawa pulang wang tunai RM300, RM200 (naib johan), RM100 (ketiga).

Seri Temin To Develop RM230 Million Housing Project In Kedah



ALOR SETAR, Jan 14 (Bernama) -- Seri Temin Development Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd (STDC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kedah State Development Corporation, will develop Bandar Sejahtera Pokok Sena in a project valued at RM230 million.

The mixed housing project, located on a 200-acre site in Pokok Sena, about 15 kilometres from here, and expected to be completed in 2017, was launched on Thursday by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak.

Azizan, who is also the Kedah State Development Corporation chairman, said the project was launched to meet the demand for home ownership and eradicate the squatter problem in the state.

"The Bandar Sejahtera Pokok Sena project is the first of its kind, with 1,811 housing units of various types to be built in phases," he told reporters after the launch.

Under the first phase are double-storey terrace houses offered at RM140,000 and all 128 units in this phase have been fully booked.

The project comprises 785 units of double-storey terrace houses, 579 units of low-cost terrace houses, 246 units of single-storey semi-detached houses, 192 units of one-and-a-half-storey terrace houses, and nine units of bangalow.

In a statement, STDC said that detailed planning was made to ensure that the houses offered were affordable to each level of society under the current economic environment, providing an impact on the property sector.

bro, may i ask you something? when was the last time you went to KB?please kindly update your info at attached thread. you must be Alor Setarian that so proud of your city..i admit that. Or maybe you want me to compare Alor Setar with other small city which are also state capital?Kuantan?Kuala Terengganu?Ipoh?Kuching?KK?Seremban?I traveled a lot..4-5 times a year to all these state capitals as my job need me to do so. And i also used to stay in Alor Setar in 98-99. Every time i visit Alor Setar, of course i can see differences here and there. But not as much and as rapid as other cities..lack of night activities, hanging spots, parks, beautiful landscape, and many more. Or maybe you would like set the city status by judging to your Tesco Mergong, Giant Al-Bukhary, City Plaza, Star Parade,or coming Tecso Tandop..A city is not just about its shopping complexes..There's lots of criteria that it has to meet before it can get the status. I do hope that your new city mayor will bring about changes to Alor Setar (co-work with PAS-state government)

Mcdonald's Malaysia Targets To Open 30 More Branches In 3 Years

KUALA TERENGGANU, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- McDonald's Malaysia, operator of the well-known fast food chain, has targeted to open 30 more branches nationwide within the next three years.

Its senior director Chan Chee Chin said the new branches would be located outside the Klang Valley and Ipoh in an effort to expand its fast food network.

"Within the period concerned, we will be opening more branches in areas like Alor Setar, Langkawi and Teluk Intan to avoid branches being concentrated in a single area like the Klang Valley," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after the opening ceremony of the first McDonald's drive-in outlet in Kuala Terengganu by State Rural Development, Entrepreneurs and Cooperatives Committee chairman Datuk Mohamed Awang Tera.

McDonald's currently has 194 outlets nationwide with 21 of them being managed by 10 franchise holders.
