Thatīs nice, 1,000 jobs (for the whole complex, I suppose)

Momo1435
January 19th, 2012, 08:07 PM
That's indeed most likely for the whole complex. The free job magazine "Job Aidem" even had a special Sky Tree Town edition, that wasn't even jobs in the tower. Lot's of jobs are coming to the area.

It was also in the news that there will be over 100 events this year in the neighborhood around the Sky Tree to commemorate the opening of the tower. It's going to be big in May.

I uploaded a 30 minute 1080p HD video of train view of Tokyo from the most western ward to the most eastern ward.

bwadpePIboM

If you want to watch it in HD please click the link and watch it on youtube: http://youtu.be/bwadpePIboM
For some reason when it is embedded and you put it on HD it doubles the video length.

You can see Sky Tree at 18:00-20:00 and Again at 21:40(here you can see how tall it really is).

Subscribe to me if you want to also :)

Am I missing something? In the two first pictures in post #6482, it's a giant shadow in the middle. What's casting the shadow? Looks way too thick for a cloud.

[EDIT]: Guess it must be a cloud, very dark shadow in my opinion.

Awesome tower nevertheless.

You mean in the very rare occasions there are snowfalls in Tokyo (like once or twice a year, if any) :) And I guess the "problem" is the same in any tower/scrapper around the world.

Anyway, the video shows very light pieces of snow or ice, they are being windblown. If they were heavier, they would fall straight down, and the base of the tower is a covered facility.

Wow. This aerial photo of Tokyo is just beyond amazing

It is amazing, but at the same time it shows that Tokyo doesn't really have the same massive sea of skyscrapers that Shanghai and Sao Paulo have. Of course there's nothing wrong with that but I didn't really know that Tokyo was in a different league in that department.

Kimiwind1184
February 7th, 2012, 09:10 PM
Different league? lol. I don't know what kind of sea of skyscrapers you are dreaming of, but definitely tall buildings are all around the place, just look at the center of the photo.
Technically speaking, Sao Paolo doesn't have a real skyscraper yet if we count them as 200+. Just bunch of 130-160 buildings that look all rusty and old, no glass, just concrete.

As far as I know Tokyo is the third city in the world by number of +100m towers (after New York and Hong Kong, I think). Maybe you donīt "see" that because Tokyo doesnīt have just one financial district, so towers are scattered through various areas. Same with residential towers.

Of course, those aerial photos make building look tiny. Look at the +600m Sky Tree, not that impressive from that long distance

After a hard day of work the tower is now officially completed.

Sky Tree finished, ready for detailing

Tokyo Sky Tree, the world's tallest tower at 634 meters, was completed Wednesday afternoon, its builder, Obayashi Corp., said.

Tobu Tower Sky Tree Co., operator of the tower, located in Sumida Ward, plans a ceremony Friday to mark its completion. Construction began in July 2008.

Tokyo Sky Tree surpassed the 333-meter Tokyo Tower, in Minato Ward, in March 2010. Tokyo Sky Tree's final height was decided last March 18.

Now that the tower has been completed, the operator plans to finish the interior for stores and other facilities with an eye to opening them to the public on May 22.

Japan finishes Tokyo Sky Tree

Tokyo - Construction of the Tokyo Sky Tree, the world's tallest self-supporting communications tower, is set to finish on Wednesday, two months late because of the quake and tsunami that struck Japan last March.

"The construction was originally scheduled to finish in December 2011 but was delayed due to a shortage of supplies after the disaster," said a spokesperson for the operator, adding that the finished structure is sound.

Some 580 000 construction workers were engaged in the construction, which cost Ĩ65bn for the tower alone, the spokesperson said.

The 580.000 figure is also in the Japanese press, but not as just construction workers but all people that where at some point involved with this tower during the planning and construction period.

There was some heavy snow on the last day of construction.

Quake-proof megatower tops out in Tokyo

Source: http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2012/03/quake-proof-megatower-tops-out.html

With memories still fresh of Tokyo's skyscrapers swaying scarily (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSP3Z8_m_eQ) as the 11 March 2011 megaquake struck Japan nearly a year ago, it's perhaps not the best time to be preparing to open the country's tallest building. But on 29 February, engineers completed Sky Tree, a 634-metre-high TV transmission and observation tower for the city - with architects Nikken Sekkei promising that it incorporates some of the most advanced earthquake and typhoon-resistant technology. It opens to the public in May.
The ultrahigh transmitter is needed because the city's existing Sky Tower transmitter - a 333-metre-high, red-and-white version of the Eiffel Tower that was built in 1958 - cannot broadcast above much of the city's ever-rising skyline, causing particular problems for lower-power digital terrestrial TV signals.
The Sky Tree has to resist major quakes with an epicentre in Tokyo, not to mention wind speeds of up to 80 metres per second (290 kilometres per hour) for 10 minutes - something the city expects from a typhoon once every 500 years. To get this performance, the architects designed a cylindrical core of reinforced concrete (http://www.nikken.co.jp/ensk/skytree/structure/structure_04.php) and hung peripheral steel framing from it to form the populated spaces.
Connected to the Sky Tree's core by oil-damped connectors - like the branches of a tree, hence the name - this arrangement cuts the shear forces, and hence the swaying motion, the structure experiences by 40 per cent.

Congrats Tokyo

It's a great start. The Sky Tree finished and lit up in time for the Mar 10 air raid and the Mar 11th earthquake. The BBC did interview Japanese citizens and they feel great about surviving past disasters and stepping into the future with a record-breaking landmark tower.

On a personal note,I was in Tokyo in 1998 when an article showed up in the Pacific Stars and Stripes about plans to replace the Tokyo Tower (finished in 1957) which had become outdated due to the rapid growth of Tokyo.

Last weekend the railway station next to the Sky Tree was christened "Tokyo Skytree Station"

Interestingly enough the name in Japanese is written out in Hiragana (Tokyo), Katakana (Sky Tree) and Kanji (Station = Eki).

Station name signs on the Tōbu lines are normally written in hiragana (and in this case katakana) with kanji underneath.

Hiragana? is that a name for another version or japanese or sort of?
There are 3 different kind of character sets in Japanese, Hiragana, Katagana and Kanji.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_writing_system

Hiragana is what it considered the base Japanese characters. It's kind of like the Japanese alphabet with 48 characters that can form all Japanese words.

Katakana is a simplified version of the Hiragana, mostly used to write foreign words in Japanese.

Kanji are the Chinese characters that are used in Japanese. Since they are Chinese every character is a word, most names are also written in Kanji.

That's truly awesome :) such a fascinating culture you got there. That means you would normally expect the name "sky tree" to be written in Katakana instead of Hiragana, I need to visit Japan!

Last week the reservations for the individual entry tickets for the tower from the opening on 05/22 until 05/30 could be made by the public.
Tokyo Sky Tree releases individual bookings
Published: Friday, Mar. 23, 2012

TOKYO - Individual ticket reservations for the Tokyo Sky Tree, the world's tallest free-standing tower, which will open to the public in two months, became available on Thursday.

About 8,000 people can visit the tower in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, each day.

full article:
http://www.sacbee.com/2012/03/23/4361387/tokyo-sky-tree-releases-individual.html
Today the results of this lottery were in.
http://hochi.yomiuri.co.jp/topics/news/20120330-OHT1T00117.htm (in Japanese).

For the 05/22 ~ 05/28 period 22.912 people have been elected out of a total of 139.831 applicants. (Taking into account that group reservations have already been open for quite some time and amount to more then half of the 8,000 daily visitors).

For the 1st day there were even x335 more applications then tickets.

The group bookings are also fully booked until September, there won't be any quit moments to go up the tower this summer.

Fr everyone that is visiting Tokyo in the next few months. If you want to go up the tower you have to know that the entrance tickets up to 10 July are reservation only.
They are only sold in advance from the Tobu Travel Box Office or via the special website:
http://ticket.tokyo-skytree.jp/ (Japanese only)

From 11 July individual tickets will be sold at the tower, expect it to be very busy for the following weeks.

Sky Tree to offer world's highest bungee jump

By MARK SCHREIBER
Tokyo's newest and biggest visitor attraction, the 634-meter-high Tokyo Sky Tree in Sumida Ward, will open to the public on May 22. And if 11th-hour contract negotiations bear fruit, visitors to the Sky Tree may soon have the opportunity to plummet 430 meters (over 1,400 feet) toward terra firma, in what is claimed to be the world's highest commercial bungee jump.

Falling for it: While shooting the Tokyo Sky Tree at night, Japan Times photographer Yoshiaki Miura captured a test jump for the planned Big Bungee Banzai attraction. YOSHIAKI MIURA
The new service, it was learned, has been quietly undergoing safety tests late at night. If arrangements can be finalized within this month, the first customers may be able to take death-defying dives from the Sky Tree from around mid-June.

The jump was discovered after being inadvertently photographed by The Japan Times' sharp-eyed senior cameraman, Yoshiaki Miura, who was in the neighborhood shooting night exposures of the new tower.

The Japan Times ran this Tokyo Sky Tree story on April Fool's day:

Japanese to build world’s 2nd highest tower in QC

JAPAN’s Mitsubishi Electric Corp. is said to be interested in buying Manila Seedling Bank Foundation Inc.’s seven-hectare property on Edsa and Quezon Avenue in Quezon City for P100,000 a square meter to put up the second tallest tower in the world.

City administrator Victor Endriga says Mitsubishi’s representatives met with him and Mayor Herbert Bautista to discuss their plan to build the tower that will house telecommunications companies, radio and television networks , commercial establishments and restaurants.

“If things get going, the tower offer will be the world’s second tallest next to Tokyo’s [634-meter] Sky Tree,” Endriga told the Manila Standard.

He said Mitsubishi showed Bautista a blueprint of its plan to transform the Manila Seedling Bank property into an eco-tourism hub under a public-private partnership.

“The mayor was overwhelmed,” Endriga said. Apart from theP7 billion in projected income from the sale of Manila Seedling Bank, Endriga said, the city was anticipating a bigger business tax collection once the telecommunications tower started operations.

“We will not spend a single centavo,” he said.

City officials were surprised when the Mitsubishi executives arranged an appointment with them, Endriga said.

“It came to their knowledge that the nursery and seedling bank was auctioned off to the city in 2010 and on July 6, 2011,” he said.

“Manila Seedling owed the city government P42 million in real-property taxes,” he said.

“We believe it does not have the money to pay us until July 6.” Rio N. Araja

Good question.

According to the official website a specialized lighting designer is responsible for lighting design.
http://www.tokyo-skytree.jp/archive/design/lighting.html

But it was the Tobu Tokyo Sky Tree Co. Ltd that ultimately decided to go for the 2 different lightning theme's that will be used. Panasonic made it all possible with their Everleds lamps.

A high visit for the Sky Tree today.

Emperor, empress visit Tokyo Sky Tree before opening

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko on Thursday visited Tokyo Sky Tree, the world's tallest self-standing tower, prior to its grand opening in late May, the Imperial Household Agency said.

The imperial couple went up to the second deck, 450 meters above ground level, and enjoyed the vast sight of Tokyo after receiving an explanation about the 634-meter tower from the Yoshizumi Nezu, president of the tower operator's parent company, Tobu Railway Co., the agency said.

And they will most likely be followed by a majority of their citizens.

70% of adults want to go up Tokyo Sky Tree: survey

Jiji

Tokyo Sky Tree, the world's tallest free-standing tower, opens May 22 and people nationwide are keen to go up it.

Almost 70 percent of the 1,288 people polled in an April 6-9 Jiji Press survey want to take in Sumida Ward's new landmark, although some balked at the ticket prices. A ticket to the first observation deck, 350 meters above the ground, costs Ĩ2,000 for people aged 18 years or older. It costs an additional Ĩ1,000 to go to the second deck, 450 meters above the ground.

The poll found 88 percent of those interested in going up the tower said they want to visit the second observatory despite the additional cost.

When asked to list the perceived benefits provided by the tower, 63 percent of respondents pointed to the economic boost that would be provided by additional tourists.
