I think it's going to be kind of ridiculous to start trying to rate all the towers about that height because of a few centimeters of beacon height or thicker paint or whatever. Everybody would be adding a bigger antenna at the tip to try to get the title back. But with a bit of experience and using also some other translation tools you can master it. What it basically says is that the TV stations wanted a tower of more then 600 meter to limit the negative effect of all the +/- 200 meter high Skyscrapers in central Tokyo. The exact height of the tower was based on the height of the Chicago Spire that would (or will) be 609.6m (2,000f), so they went 1 meter higher. Ishihara Shintaro, the governor of Tokyo didn't really want such a high tower. The 2016 bid should be a bigger priority then this tower, but that it was up to the broadcasters to make the final decision on the tower. Viperfreak2 September 18th, 2009, 07:41 PM Interesting. With that low cloud cover in the above picture, I can imagine this tower up in the cloud when finished. Kirk September 18th, 2009, 09:26 PM For the reason that such a tower is necessary, you have to understand that terrestrial broadcast TV is more prevalent in Japan than it is in say, North America. Uptake on cable TV subscription is lower (about 15% vs about 25-30% in NA), and is less necessary, because higher population densities make OTA broadcasting more feasible. The government is pushing the planned transition to all-digital broadcasting in 2011. In order to cover the large and densely populated Tokyo metro area, I assume a 600 metre tower is pretty useful. particlez September 18th, 2009, 09:50 PM ^another reason for higher density; freedom from cable tv costs. the construction process is more interesting than the tower. and the tower is already a good design. MattTheTubaGuy September 19th, 2009, 12:43 PM Wow, that youtube video is awesome. For some reason, I thought the cranes were raised by the other cranes putting more sections on top, but the way it is actually done makes more sense, otherwise there would be an extremely high crane tower inside. In any case both of these towers are going to have to be maintained to prevent the damage caused by weathering which will probably require a significant amount of effort and expense. Hi Montana. The reason there is no rust on the Sky Tree is because the weld areas remain protected from the weather from welding through x-ray and stress relieving, to coating and/or painting. They don't move the covered platforms untill the paint is dry - never giving rust a chance to form. Why Guangzhou chose not to do this is a mystery to me - now they will have to remove the rust before coating. That would normally be done by sandblasting but at these heights I'm not sure if they will do it that way. I agree that the mantainance will be an ongoing adventure. I would imagine painting will be done at least every few years. Senju September 21st, 2009, 05:03 AM http://lh3.ggpht.com/_l4NeMUoiY-k/Srbqbu1e-4I/AAAAAAAACIQ/7OSw0TWb9Q4/s800/DSC07831.JPG http://lh4.ggpht.com/_l4NeMUoiY-k/Srbqcu-HP5I/AAAAAAAACIU/X6a_hiXNCzc/s800/DSC07832.JPG http://lh5.ggpht.com/_l4NeMUoiY-k/Srbqd90r0EI/AAAAAAAACIY/uha5BmLAJ50/s800/DSC07833.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_l4NeMUoiY-k/Srbqe9s5dOI/AAAAAAAACIc/ZDPaU6VxWWw/s800/DSC07834.JPG http://lh6.ggpht.com/_l4NeMUoiY-k/SrbqghuBQSI/AAAAAAAACIo/sy_YYCwPlbM/s800/DSC07836.JPG Ukraine September 21st, 2009, 03:35 PM ^^^^ money talks, bullshit walks  the sock September 21st, 2009, 09:34 PM thanx momo GreenMonk108 September 22nd, 2009, 12:25 AM What is the price tag for this tower? Tokyo doesn't really have rough areas, but this is indeed not on of the upper class neighborhoods in the city. Historically Tokyo can be divided into two sides, Yamanote (towards the mountain) is where the aristocracy lived and Shitamachi (low town) where the normal people lived and worked. The Sumida ward where the tower is being built is in the middle of the Shitamachi part of town, before the war it was the most populous part of Tokyo. That changed when the whole area was completely destroyed by the bombings and the fires during the war that raged through the area that consisted mostly of small wooden houses built very close together. After the war the area was rebuilt in the same chaotic way as was before as people just started to rebuild the houses. But many people had died or moved away so the number of people living in the area decreased dramatically, right now only half the number of people live in Sumida then in 1935 (464,892 -> 237,433). But the area is still a mix between residential buildings and small workshops like it was before the war. It has a kind of small scale charm to it, especially because it's far from a bad neighborhood. It's safe, it's clean but it's just not the new shinny and neon Tokyo of Shinjuku and Shibuya with it's tall buildings. This of course will make the Tokyo Sky Tree stand out completely in it's neighborhood, that could lead to a transformation whit the real estate prices that already go up. ~~~ Some more blog pictures. http://i36.tinypic.com/2mqt6gw.jpg http://i34.tinypic.com/2hziesp.jpg cyaranbo.blog17.fc2.com/ http://i37.tinypic.com/1zx5xc5.jpg runfaster.blog116.fc2.com/ http://i35.tinypic.com/atmhh.jpg blog.goo.ne.jp/kanimiso933 http://i34.tinypic.com/25uqsmf.jpg http://i35.tinypic.com/2a4zcyu.jpg http://i36.tinypic.com/2vhxb42.jpg yozoohpa.blog54.fc2.com/ helghast October 4th, 2009, 11:48 PM it's really starting to have an impact on the skyline Ganis October 5th, 2009, 04:34 AM Incredible how fast it goes up... :eek2: its just lift and bolt into place, no cement work that i can see. Typhoon bears down on Japan's main islands TOKYO, Oct 7 (Reuters) - A powerful typhoon approached Japan's main islands on Wednesday, threatening the heavily populated country's industrial centres with torrential rain and strong winds. Typhoon Melor may be the most powerful storm to hit Japan's main islands in more than 10 years if it makes landfall, the Meteorological Agency said. Television showed waves pounding the shores of Japan's small southern islands as the typhoon moved north-northeast towards the the main island of Honshu. The eye of the storm was 250 km (155 miles) south of Tanegashima, 1000 km southwest of Tokyo and home to Japan's rocket launch pad, at 10:00 JST (0000 GMT), according to the Meteorological Agency. It could make landfall in central Japan west of Tokyo on Thursday. Up to 400 mm of rain is forecast over the next 24 hours in the Tokai region, which includes the industrial centre of Nagoya, the agency said, also warning of high winds, gales and flooding across southern Japan. Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) may not open its plants in the Nagoya area on Thursday due to the typhoon. "We haven't decided whether to do daytime shifts tomorrow," a Toyota spokeswoman said. An official at Nippon Oil's (5001.T) Oita refinery on the southern island of Kyushu said it was raining heavily but the typhoon had not affected the refinery's operations or oil shipments. Nansei Sekiyu KK's refinery in Okinawa said high seas were delaying some ships. Melor, which had earlier been classed as a Category 5 Super Typhoon, is now a Category 1, according to storm tracking website Tropical Storm Risk. A Category 1 storm can bring winds of up to 153 km an hour. Television news warned of similarities to a deadly 2004 typhoon at the same time of year that killed 95 people, brought transport to a halt and disrupted production. An official at Tokyo's city government offices said no additional measures were being taken to deal with the typhoon. An average of about three such storms hit Japan each year, although there were none last year. Momo1435 October 15th, 2009, 06:16 AM I noticed that neighborhood where Tokyo Sky Tree is being built in are kind run down neighborhood. I am wondering if that neighborhood is slated for major redevelopment? It's just not as shiny as people think Tokyo always is, bit this is how a big part of Tokyo actually looks like. It's the old Tokyo where the normal people always have lived and worked, with many small houses and workshops. This is also the reason why there will be some redevelopments but there won't be a complete transformation of the whole neighborhood. There are just too many land and property owners, it will take years and years to buy all the plots to redevelop them. Especially with the Japanese law that protects land owners from the government or any other developer from buying up their land. The Sky Tree is being built on an old railway yard that is owned by the railway company that is now developing the tower. Therefor they didn't have a problem getting all the land needed to start construction. 10/15 Blog update #1 http://i34.tinypic.com/16jinpy.jpg ameblo.jp/nzmst/ http://i38.tinypic.com/2zhr68z.jpg /tokyo-sky-tree.seesaa.net/ tommyzion October 15th, 2009, 04:51 PM Photo 15-Oct 2009 http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_01s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_01.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_04s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_04.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_05s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_05.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_06s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_06.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_07s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_07.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_08s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_08.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_09s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_09.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_11s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_11.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_12s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_12.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_13s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_13.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_14s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_14.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_15s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_15.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_16s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_16.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_17s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_17.JPG) http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_18s.jpg (http://www.neox.to/skytree/sky20091015_18.JPG) _Mort_ October 15th, 2009, 08:50 PM ^^ Thanks ! Now, it becomes offensive? japanese001 October 16th, 2009, 12:50 PM 過去と未来を結ぶ時を刻む光を表現するとしている http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/5556/skyt11.jpg Dubai Skyscraper October 16th, 2009, 01:01 PM 東京スカイツリー、高さ世界一に 634メートル http://www.47news.jp/CN/200910/CN2009101601000571.html Tokyo Sky Tree changes heights to 634m  very good news!:banana: Uaarkson October 16th, 2009, 02:20 PM Again, Malmö's skyscraper like trash in Tokyo. Not totally incorrect, either, though. The area east of Sumida River belonged to Shimousa from sometime in the 7th century, when the province system started, to 1683, when the border between Shimousa and Musashi moved eastward due to the Tone River improvement project. The province system went out of use 1880's, so that means the site of the tower was in Shimousa for a millennium, while it was in Musashi only for two centuries. I hate the name Sky Tree, too, but I can't come up with a good idea. Sumida Tower sounds lower ranked than Tokyo Tower simply because Sumida belongs to Tokyo. New Tokyo Tower is just too bland. The candidates officially given last year are out of discussion. Momo1435 October 16th, 2009, 05:46 PM The official website has now been updated with the new height of 634 meter, although not yet in the English section.
