View Full Version : LONDON | Crossharbour Tower - Baltimore Wharf | 149m | 44 fl | Pro
wjfox May 4th, 2006, 09:08 PM Crossharbour
Canary Wharf, London
Height: 131m (AGL) / 136m (AOD)
Floors: 43
Architect: Skidmore Owings & Merrill
Developer: Ballymore Properties Ltd
Work is finally starting on this much-delayed residential scheme, which has been talked about since 2001. It will stand just to the south of the main Canary Wharf cluster, near the 50-storey Pan Peninsula Tower which also began work recently.
The project was originally proposed as 6 towers, the tallest being 157m, but was withdrawn. It was proposed a 2nd time, as a single tower of 170m, but this too was cancelled, due to local NIMBYs complaining about the height.
In September last year, a revised plan for a 131m tower was finally given approval.

hella good May 5th, 2006, 10:32 AM nice, i wondered what was going on that site for ages now...
wjfox May 5th, 2006, 02:38 PM I think it's a very boring and unremarkable design compared to the original 2 schemes proposed. As usual we get a "dumbed down" design thanks to the local NIMBY's.
This was the original scheme, back in 2001.
6 towers, the tallest being 157m/35 storeys:-

http://www.skyscrapernews.com/images/pics/88CrossharbourTower4_pic1.jpg
This was the next design, which would have been 170m and had 50 storeys, taller than the Heron Quays buildings. Sadly though, it was cut down following complaints from nearby residents. The usual lame excuses - "too tall!" and "out of scale!"
(even though the UK's 3 tallest buildings are just down the road) :|

The final, approved design. 131m/43 storeys.

Gerard May 5th, 2006, 02:46 PM Nice buidling still.
The floor to floor height seems very little with this buidling with 131 meters for 43 floors.
Compared to the 50 floor within 170 meters.
They probably had to cut the floor to floor height to get it within the height limits or something like that ??
Sonic from Padova May 5th, 2006, 02:52 PM Great project for the Docklands!
tigermike May 5th, 2006, 05:15 PM I don't know about the Pan Peninsula building...please tell me someone
DrasQue May 5th, 2006, 05:22 PM Nothing special
NothingBetterToDo May 5th, 2006, 08:25 PM Dumb NIMBY's..........how can they complain the original design was too tall when they already live in the shawdow of the tallest skyscrapers in the UK??
wjfox May 5th, 2006, 09:23 PM I don't know about the Pan Peninsula building...please tell me someone
This is Pan Peninsula, the other tower being built nearby. Looks much better than Crossharbour imo.
Height is 147m/50 storeys, and it started construction a few months back:-

Here's a recent pic of the Pan Peninsula site. The Crossharbour Tower will stand in the background, to the right of that blue groundscraper:-

Newcastle Guy May 6th, 2006, 06:54 PM Nothing special
No it isnt, I like it though, it will expand the CW cluster along with PP. The Shard will put this and everything else in the UK- and maybe even europe in the dark when it starts!
Zim Flyer May 6th, 2006, 07:33 PM Dumb NIMBY's..........how can they complain the original design was too tall when they already live in the shawdow of the tallest skyscrapers in the UK??
Totally agree, if ever there is a right place for a skyscraper it's Canary Wharf.
tigermike May 8th, 2006, 08:11 AM I made a thread here:- http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=8350348
thanks mate
Muse May 8th, 2006, 08:52 AM This is a bit of a step away from most SOM in-house archtect's designs. 99% are smooth-skinned glass edifices. Understandably, residential towers come with balconies though lol
Agent Vengence May 8th, 2006, 10:22 AM The second design, which had the tallest tower would have been sweet.

Agent Vengence May 19th, 2006, 12:59 PM Raise that guff to the ground fellas :righton:
ferge May 19th, 2006, 03:17 PM Great, the city yet again suffers to Nimby's, and has to resort to a clumbsy, stubby and overall banal design instead of that nice, elegent 170m design.. pathetic.. Ah well, least somets bein built..
Mplsuptown May 19th, 2006, 03:23 PM I like the first proposal best, I think it's the curve in the building that I liked. If given a choice between proposal 2 or 3, I'd have to go with the 3. London is rock'n.
Newcastle Guy May 23rd, 2006, 11:05 PM The tower seems to have a spire that takes it up to about 140m-145m
wjfox May 23rd, 2006, 11:08 PM There is no spire.
forvine May 24th, 2006, 12:57 AM Canary Wharf sure is getting some nice apartment tower :okay:

Lol -I dont particuarly like it for those exact same reasons. Each to there own I suppose.
A curve or two in the canary wharf would do wonders to the place instead of every building seemly designed with a pencil & a ruler.
wjfox August 13th, 2006, 03:09 AM Lol -I dont particuarly like it for those exact same reasons.
Yeah, same here :)
A curve or two in the canary wharf would do wonders to the place instead of every building seemly designed with a pencil & a ruler.
Yeah, totally. Just look at the effect the Ontario Tower is having. Not really tall enough for its own separate thread here in the World Forums, but worth a quick mention here -

Ralphkke May 1st, 2007, 11:44 AM And again a great new tower in London!
Agent Vengence May 1st, 2007, 02:38 PM so what are the towers being built in the background? ;)

Hopefully not.
Sentient Seas May 1st, 2007, 11:40 PM Looks like a great project, though I liked the older renders a little better.
wjfox June 23rd, 2007, 06:08 PM First crane is now on site. In the background you can see the Pan Peninsula Towers (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=347260), also being developed by Ballymore -

chest July 14th, 2007, 09:29 PM 3 cranes up with 3 more about to rise - it looks as though the whole development will be under way as the cranes are spread across the site - I think the tower crane is to the far left (north) and has just started to rise

Holland July 21st, 2007, 07:32 PM Nice architecture, but it gives the affect of just a huge wall along the waterfront, which is so unnecessary. Could the architect not have broken up the podium/base building a little bit?

Well, the original scheme was far more attractive. It consisted of 6 towers with varying heights (tallest 157m), but was cancelled -

Tubeman July 22nd, 2007, 11:16 AM ^^
Yes it was a crying shame... I loved the original scheme. It was rejected by Tower Hamlets for being too 'dense', and yet they approved the current scheme which is essentially two giant slabs: one upright and one lying down.
Chad July 22nd, 2007, 01:39 PM But what they are building is about as good! :)
AngrySlob July 22nd, 2007, 07:41 PM This is one of the few developments where I prefer the cut down version. There is something about the long building next to the tower (which is very nice itself) that looks very British to me. I just get this image in my head of looking over the water front on some grey rainy day and it still looking great. I love it.
Myster E July 22nd, 2007, 08:55 PM what do you mean very British?
wjfox July 29th, 2007, 12:45 PM Wartime bomb found near Canary Wharf
LONDON (Reuters) - Police closed streets near Canary Wharf on Saturday after an unexploded German flying bomb from World War Two was found on a construction site.
Bomb disposal experts were called in to make the V1 missile safe after it was unearthed close to the complex that houses 80,000 office workers during the working week, police said. At weekends the area is busy with shoppers and visitors.
Police closed several roads around the site in Millharbour, a road in the former docklands.
"Ambulance, fire and police are there and the building site has been evacuated," a police spokesman said. The area was cordoned off, he said.
Thousands of V1s, nicknamed "Doodlebugs", were fired at the capital during the war, with the docks a prime target.
Hundreds of unexploded bombs from the war are buried across the country, according to government figures. They are unearthed from time to time, often during building excavations.
Canary Wharf's tenants include Bank of America, Barclays, Citigroup, HSBC, the Independent and Reuters.

AngrySlob July 29th, 2007, 06:17 PM what do you mean very British?
I mean to me it kind of looks like, in the picture posted above for example, a sort of modern take on a British council block. I really like it, which is bizarre because I hate council blocks.
rugbytommy July 29th, 2007, 07:14 PM it's true , it does look very Brititsh . Resembles the developments by Brood Street in Birmingham .

Comfortably Numb January 27th, 2008, 04:08 AM I like it, but I prefer the original design (more 'curvy', less boxy). It doesn't look bad though and appears to look better @ night, when it's all lit up.

:)
Madman March 28th, 2008, 01:25 AM Yeah only minor redesign, I doubt they'll need to submit to planning, probably just bung in some drawings to Building Regs ;)
This tower is a conceptual bolt out of the blue, I wonder what was the driver behind it - actually looking at it, not only is it taller but also wider...hmm very crafty developer trying to distract increase in size with funkier design me thinks (not that I am complaining :))
Newcastle Guy March 28th, 2008, 02:08 AM Anyone for more renderoids?:)
