View Full Version : Established and Emerging Urban Skylines in the Philippines - Compiled Threads
davaobred November 16th, 2011, 09:52 AM Sad but true. :( We need to catch up. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand pa lang o...looking at some photos of their cities and provinces, mabilis and aok ang urban development nila.
Just browsed Asean second city threads..Indeed, we have a lot, I mean A LOT of catching up to do..Malaysia's second city of Georgetown (Penang) puts our Manila to shame..ang ganda ng lugar na un..malinis..

WawaY[625] November 16th, 2011, 11:16 AM kanya kanyang interpretation lang yan..for me its only metro manila and metro cebu..imo the place should not only satisfy the technical definition but should also have the feel of being one..that is a large urban center composed of different cities pero dapat conurbation of cities..di yung dahil nag share lang sila ng boundaries although hindi naman contiguous ang built up area

Junx November 16th, 2011, 12:43 PM Dami na rin pala sa Cebu no at 80+ skyscrapers.....
Sige lang, Davao will have plenty of skyscrapers soon kasi nagstart na ang construction ng mga highrise projects sa Ayala Center. Dami pang ibang proposals and I hope tuloy tuloy na. Gaganda na rin ang city skyline ng Davao.
Pansin ko lang, in general, Philippines is growing economically naman so good things will come for all of pinoys. Humanda kayo Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Sana nga tuloy tuloy na to. At sana wla nang mag-aaway (CVC) Manila, Cebu, Davao, etc. Magmahalan nalang tayong lahat. Let's support each other. Puro naman tayo mga pinoy diba? Magtulungan nalang tayong lahat para sa kaunlaran ng bansa. Dapat hindi tayo magkukumpetensiya. Let's do that to our neighboring Asian cities.

Still a lot more room to build mid to high-rise buildings in this area. I really love its riverside location. I'm excited to take a nightshot of Iloilo's skyline with the Iloilo River 5 to 10 years from now. I'm sure the area will have taller buildings by then ... complemented by the proposed Iloilo River Esplanade project.

Super agree ako dyan.... FTC Company is influenced by Dubai architecture... the owner of AEON actually announced another project already in the pipeline which is bigger and taller than AEON.... he said it will be like DUBAI in a TV interview.

I thought I strayed into another thread in a parallel universe where our cities are buoying each other up instead of the usual putdowns I encounter here. Hahaha.

skyion November 17th, 2011, 01:43 AM ^^ preferably some of those greens be remained that way, buffer zone ang iba dyan sa gilid ng Davao River and will prove crucial esp. during rainy seasons. It also makes the city look less of a concrete jungle that may end up looking an eyesore.

I said days ago that Davao has around 7 skyscrapers. Six buildings have 12 floors and higher.
1. Royal Mandaya Tower 1 has only 10 floors but because of the spire atop then that should be included on its official height and that this building should be approximately around 40m with its spire. So, this is the 7th skyscraper.
2. And, Davao Doctors Medical Tower has eleven floors, I'm hoping that this is about 35m with its roof. Can someone from Davao confirm this by asking the building admin to let the as-built plan be shown to you. Or, by simply visit the hospital then pass through the stairway, measure one stair rise and count the number of stair steps in each floor so that floor to floor height could be easily computed. I hope 2nd to 10th will have floor to floor heights of 3m or 3.1m, then the roof parapet will be 35m of 36m high from the ground. And if so this will be your 8th skyscraper in your city. Remember that the ground floor could be higher, thanks so much.
I'm doing that method for calculating building heights if as-built plan is inaccessible. This is easier to do in public building like hospitals, schools. Make sure lang guys not to try passing thru fire exits dahil minsan may camera at naka panic door yan, di ka makalabas from fire exit stairway, sa ground floor na ang labas nyan
OtAkAw November 18th, 2011, 07:37 AM Let us not tire ourselves with matters as trivial as a skyline poll. Our major skylines are nice, period. If foreigners (especially mga inggiterong kapitbahay) rate them poorly, it's a sign of insecurity and envy, that's enough indication that our skylines are indeed nice.
Remember, the only reason why people pull you down is because you are up above them. :D

Iloilo should envision to make use of these watery areas along the river not only as important buffer zones but be in harmony with Nature in utilizing that will BEST serve its purpose, by making use of it as reforested areas, nature reserves, parks, tourist resorts (ex. stilt cottages with watery ambiance right smack in downtown area!), and even fishponds and ricefields existing in harmony with wholistic urban environment. This will make Iloilo's cityscape as one of the World's most unique and may even increase its Real Estate value with proper and more sophisticated utilization of its unique geographic characteristic. Imagine the intangible benefits it will provide esp. serving as natural protection plus the bonus of tourism revenues and even serve as educational purpose for field trips :okay: :okay:
do otherwise, like saturating it instead with concrete "development" that runs contrary and in defiance to Iloilo River's natural flow, then expect worsening flooding and submerged streets.

Iloilo city looks very scenic from the waterways despite its short buildings. So it's not really about tall buildings but the total picture. One question though is-How low is this main part of the city as regards to sea level and is it subjected to flooding? It appears that the concentration of buildings sits on this delta aka floodplain based on the aerial photo above.

Thanks for the kind words. Iloilo River is a jewel for Iloilo City, which will host a world river summit sometime in March, just after Sen. Franklin Drilon's project - the Iloilo Esplanade - is finished in January 2012. In a few years time, that area will witness the rise of a few medium and high rises, starting with the 21-storey Mang Insal (Injap) Tower, the 12-storey Richmonde Hotel and Tower, the 10-storey Medicus Medical Center, and some other in the pipeline.
it is not that low, Jaro is the only district that is below sea level in the City, which is about 5-6 km from that site. No area in the city is below sea level, otherwise, it will be perennially submerged. What we are seeing in the picture are the tide basins of the Iloilo River, which is so short, it actually acts more like an estuary than a river, although it has its own tributaries. Those tide basins, and the mangroves in it, are essential for the continued existence of the Iloilo River as a clean and livable ecosystem within a highly-urbanized and built-up area.
Those areas also are not flooded. What was flooded before was the usual areas prone to flash floods - where waterways are constricted - just like anywhere else in the world. Iloilo has already addressed that issue with the construction of the Jaro Floodway, another Drilon initiative.
SamwiseGamgee November 18th, 2011, 05:16 PM Thanks for the info @Arcabe.I consider this city a very scenic one like Zambo.I noticed too that Iloilo's waterfronts are very clean and devoid of informal settlements or are they somewhere unseen on the other side of the city?
With the establishment of the Iloilo River Development Project, Iloilo River is now almost free of illegal settlers and structures. The city is now very aggressive with its resettlement program, with plans to build medium rises as relocation sites.
I have lived in Zambo for about 3 months. What I liked about the city is its very compact downtown area, which feels very cosmopolitan. :)
skyion November 18th, 2011, 05:16 PM how Iloilo maintained the quality of its river is admirable :okay:

Thanks for the kind words, Sirs. We were just lucky that our local leaders are very supportive of each other. What this local initiative - the Iloilo River Development Project - has, that the others don't have is continuity. This project has been handed from one mayor to the next, with better and better results. :)
eonynx November 20th, 2011, 06:08 AM likewise, thank you sirs for the positive feed backs. there was a time that iloilo river has to also contend with a seemingly unfettered garbage situation and lengthy shanties along its banks. this iloilo river clean up drive is still a work in progress. it took not just one, but several administrations for this to finally gain solid footing. hopefully, this will be relentlessly sustained as commercial and other building establishments find their places near or along its shores.

with your mayor known fro his antiques, i think kailangan lang e remind yan si mayor, magagawa nyo na agad yan... dito sa iloilo kasi, nagkaroon siya nang massive support from the Ilonggos, so walang nagawa ang mga squatters, mas maraming boto kasi ang sumuporta na dapat linisin, kaysa sa dami nang mga squatters.

Nakaka-inggit yung ganda at linis ng Iloilo River. Mukhang pasyalan talaga. :)
Magandang halimbawa ito para sa mga Major Urban Cities na may dumadaloy na ilog. Hirap mag maintain kaya at di biro na ayusin ang kalagayan ng isang ilog na nasa mismong sentro ng syudad.

Sana. Maybe the LGUs along the Pasig could start by regulating the sewage from the industries and residences; the illegal settlers should be relocated next. Thanks for the kind words.

I lived in Basak for a few months when we did something inside MEPZ II. Lapu-lapu, IMO has the potential to become the perfect city, almost as perfect as the ideal SIM City city. It has an airport, seaports, industries, booming tourism, etc. :okay:

dapat seryosa lang talaga ang city government, tapos dinagdagan payan nang mga media na laging dinadala nila sa ere ang mga dapat gawin para ma save ang ilog, kaya nagkaroon nang massive support...

Some photos I have in my drive that I'm archiving. I took these last year (well, almost a year ago) so you would already recognize some changes in the actual scene. I hope to take photos from the same angle again this Dec. I'm excited to see how it compares to the scenes here after a year. I only had a P&S cam at this time and it didn't have a good zoom so medyo nasacrifice ang quality.
