View Full Version : British Military: Kings Regiment To Be Gone
Catfire May 5th, 2006, 07:11 PM I dunno if any of you guys know this, but as an army cadet I have been told that the King's Regiment is to be abolished (the very regiment I am in). I dunno if it is really true, but I have been told by our officer that the King's name and cap badge is to be changed (no idea what to). Do you know if I am being told the truth or know anything about it? I don't know what to believe.
Also the rank of Field Marshal is to be abolished and the highest rank will soon be General.

Zim Flyer May 5th, 2006, 07:13 PM I don't know about the Kings Regiment Catfire.
Re the rank of Field Marshel, I thought John Major abolished it in the early 1990's and the only title existing is an honoury one held by Prince Philip :dunno:

kebabmonster May 5th, 2006, 07:36 PM From the 1st of July, it will be the "Duke of Lancaster Regiment".
The Kings Regiment, Kings Own Royal Border Regiment and Queen's Lancashire Regiment are merging to form the above mentioned regiment.
You'll still be a Kingsman though, even in the new unit (as will all privates).
The Red Rose will feature on the new badge, set in the Fontenoy laurel.
Catfire May 5th, 2006, 08:28 PM Thanks for that, kebabmonster. And to you, Zim Flyer, I am just going off what I heard at cadets.
kebabmonster May 5th, 2006, 11:40 PM You can find more info at your Regiment's site:

The defence image database is also a good site for a few pics/research.

Highest rank for the Army would be Chief of the General Staff, i.e. General Mike Jackson, who in turn reports to the Chief of the Defence Staff, now Air Chief Marshal Jock Stirrup.
Gareth May 6th, 2006, 02:06 AM Aren't we supposed to be getting regional regiments, like the Tyne Tees Regiment, Granada, Yorkshire, Central, Anglia?
kebabmonster May 6th, 2006, 08:04 AM Not heard of that one to be honest Gareth. Some Police forces are merging along regional lines, of a sort.

The ranks of Admiral of the Fleet Field Marshal and Marshal of the Royal Air Force haven't been "abolished", but nobody has been promoted to one of those five-star ranks for a while now given the current size of our armed forces. The Chief of the Defence Staff always used to hold one of those ranks, but these days he's an Admiral/General/Air Chief Marshal.
Similarly, in the US military the five-star rank (Fleet Admiral, General of the Army, General of the Air Force) is only awarded in wartime.

That is why nobody has been awarded the ranks: because they are being abolished once all the current Field Marshals, Marshals of the RAF and Admirals of the Fleet have retired / passed on.

Do you have any proof to back this up?

It is on the cards. I was arsing about with the ITV regional names, but the north east regimant is the Tyne Tees Regiment.
The Wikipedia article says this...
In December 2004, it was announced that the King's Regiment, along with the King's Own Royal Border Regiment and the Queen's Lancashire Regiment, would be amalgamated to form the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment (King's Lancashire and Border) as part of the restructuring of the infantry. This will be a complete merging into a two battalion regiment - thus it is impossible to maintain the old regimental titles as part of the new battalions, since that would involve one regiment disappearing completely.
Pretty much a 'Granada' regiment, though I think Cheshire will come under Mercia. I wonder if London will get a Thames regment Mon-Fri and a London Weekend Regiment from Friday evening through to Sunday? :)
kebabmonster May 6th, 2006, 10:50 PM LWT-the TA?
Gareth May 6th, 2006, 10:59 PM Indeed. :)
HOI May 6th, 2006, 11:33 PM Gareth i think you are right. they are advertising for people to join the new Yorkshire regiment
Manchester Planner May 7th, 2006, 02:51 PM The rank of Field Marshal isn't being abolished, it just won't be used. It will instead be reserved for when/if the Army is big enough for such a high rank. Ditto for the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.
Chief of the General Staff is the professional head of the Army, but it's an office not a rank. Don't confuse the two.

Will be gone soon, only created in 1999. Will become part of Royal Regiment of Fusiliers

I'm just going off what our officer told us at cadets, and we basically do everything the army do except going out to war.
