whats everyones opinions on the Stadium Of Light, Sunderland AFC? its amazing to think that despite sunderland having only 12pts and being bottom of the premiership they have still averaged over 34,000 this season. They was 45,000 there for last mondays game also.

Disraeli May 6th, 2006, 03:38 AM Nice enough ground. Will look better if they ever get round to adding the extra tier to the other two sides which is unlikely to happen in the near future.
Flipper May 6th, 2006, 03:45 AM File alongside Riverside Stadium, Pride Park, Walkers Stadium, St Mary's Stadium and all the other inspid, unimaginative and bland shite that got built in England over the last 15 years.
sterock85 May 6th, 2006, 03:52 AM ha very funny. :weirdo: thats what makes it so good, it isnt a complicated mess..it simple on the eye but very effective....its alot better than the riverside....
Giorgio May 6th, 2006, 12:17 PM Looks like Old Trafford!
Lostboy May 6th, 2006, 12:19 PM Best Stadium in the Championship by far!
Noostairz May 6th, 2006, 02:49 PM the redeveloped half's class:

but, as bubomb's said before, the outside of the single-tiered bit looks cheap and needs redevelopment, although this is unlikely to happen soon considering the team's status.
Jack Rabbit Slim May 6th, 2006, 02:50 PM Pretty decent stadium, will look much better though when they get round to expanding the stadium capacity with a complete top tier. It's a shame its not gonna be in the Premiership next season.

I think its amazing that a team playing in what is supposedly the worlds best league can only get an average attendance of 34,000.
NavyBlue May 7th, 2006, 06:49 AM Looks unfinished and could've done with a video replay screen and a translucent roof as it looks rather dark in the upper deck.
Will become a very nice stadium IF they ever finish it.
Martuh May 7th, 2006, 01:46 PM It would be much better if the second 'tier' is finished all around the field, not just one length and one width.
Its AlL gUUd May 7th, 2006, 01:54 PM It would be much better if the second 'tier' is finished all around the field, not just one length and one width.
yes but they won't be able to fill it at the moment, so there is no need.

I know they relegated. But hey, the stadium's ugly now.
london lad May 7th, 2006, 02:09 PM It really is a cheap & very ugly looking stadium, at least from the outside.

no one really gives a damn bout the outside, look at da luz in lisbon; exterior is crap but the interior makes up for it.
sterock85 May 8th, 2006, 02:39 AM ha some of the comments on here make me laugh.the stadium of light is by far one of the best stadiums in england...thats why on numerous occastions it has been said so. well its better than st.james' atleast.
Eindhovenispower May 8th, 2006, 03:09 AM yep, the stadium of light was on the list of the england 2006 team, dissolved by blatter, he chose some country on the continent, just across the dutch border.
if sunderland maintaned the results they used to have around the year 2000.
the capacity would have gone up to 55,000 or even to over 60,000. In 2001, I can remember, SUnderland got an attendance of 48,000 against.... Bradford...can you believe it. :runaway:
sterock85 May 8th, 2006, 05:39 AM sunderland have just gotten an attendance of 45,000 last monday. they regularly got 48,000 during the season 00/01 and 01/02 up untill they got relegated in 2003. since then supporters have been unhappy and wont return untill owner bob murray has left the club.
Loranga January 19th, 2009, 06:53 PM Did this stadium just cost £23M?
jayo January 19th, 2009, 07:30 PM I think its amazing that a team playing in what is supposedly the worlds best league can only get an average attendance of 34,000.
Ok.
Its a small football club in a small city.It doesn't have much of a fanbase outside of Sunderland itself so its actually pretty amazing considering all of those points that they can get an average of 34,000.And also thats an average. On big games they will get full attendance or 45,000.etc.etc.
I love it to be honest and it looks great from the river wier.

Bobby3 January 19th, 2009, 08:40 PM Yea, Sunderland doesn't even have 200,000 people. So, their attendance is quite impressive.
Jaeger January 19th, 2009, 08:43 PM Great Stadium :okay:
Sunderland were robbed of 3 points against Villa at the weekend by referee Mike Dean. A goal scored with Milner's hand and a penalty that was given for a foul that took place outside the area. :ohno:
Loranga February 12th, 2009, 12:39 AM Any pics of it, except of the "arena room"?
ArchieTheGreat February 12th, 2009, 12:30 PM Yea, Sunderland doesn't even have 200,000 people. So, their attendance is quite impressive.
I'm not a fan of Sunderland, but live in County Durham. Sunderland isn't a city based team, traditionally its a team for the whole of County Durham. People come to watch Sunderland from places such as Peterlee, Seaham, Durham, Chester-le-street, Bishop auckland and a whole load of other small towns throughout the county. So you are talking of a catchment area of about 500,000 people. That why they get such high crowds, also the fans are very loyal.
Its the same with Newcastle. Newcastle isn't a big city like say Leeds or Liverpool, but they get supporters from the whole of Tyneside, Northumberland and County Durham. Again that's why they get big crowds when compared to the size of the city.
Saentown February 12th, 2009, 02:54 PM Ik was there last summer when Sunderland play a friendly match versus Ajax. I realle admire the Sunderland Stadium. It really look awsome.

Schmeek February 14th, 2010, 12:52 AM Many thanks for the photos, but I have to say that thay do not really do it (the SOL) justice. Looks much better from the other side from where you can see the upper tier.:)

The tyne and wear area is over 1million people. Sunderland are the second best team in the north east with newcastle being the biggest.
RMB2007 October 23rd, 2011, 08:31 PM The faded seats look awful! Yep, time to call in these chaps. :)
