Beiruti May 8th, 2006, 08:33 AM BEACHES OF LEBANON
Summer is here, and I thought its about time we dedicate a thread to the lovely coastline of Lebanon and its many beautiful beaches!
Anyone recommend any particular beaches? which one is your favorite?
My top three are: 1. Janna Sur Mer, 2. Oceana, 3. Edde Sands
Here's a few pics for now...

Tyre has some nice beachs n Flordia Beach is nice
lebaneseangel May 8th, 2006, 02:30 PM my favorite is samaya. i couldnt find any photos of them online. but its near a water park. its a private beach with chalets, but if you have a friend or relative who has a place there they can get you an entrance pass. they have a few pools, the beach, tennis courts, and a cool place to eat.
theres also a military club that has a private beach and is nice..but its not so much space
nareg May 8th, 2006, 02:36 PM La Guava is great too!!
SpotlessMind May 8th, 2006, 05:07 PM Do the Lebanese Muslim women participate in the beach life as well? And by participating I mean wearing a swimming suit, not sitting on the beach with your burka on. ;)
I know a lot Muslim women there don't wear like veils but I guess this is a bit different.
Beiruti May 8th, 2006, 05:14 PM ^^ LOL you are kidding right? Some muslim women walk around in thongs in Lebanon... anyway let me stress again, there is no difference between muslims and christians and druze socially in Lebanon. Most of the women are very liberal regardless of religion and its very rare to see a Lebanese woman wearing any full coverig (and if you see one in Lebanon she is a Gulf tourist).
SpotlessMind May 8th, 2006, 05:25 PM I already suspected but just checking to be safe! ;) Anyway, good for them! :D

nareg May 8th, 2006, 07:34 PM Nice! Wish I was swimming in Mövenpick's olymic pool.
Beiruti May 8th, 2006, 07:41 PM ^^Have you been to Movenpick? I went once as a guest and I really didnt like the people there... everyone is so stuck up and fake, they only go there to see and be seen and show off their latest designer sunglasses and custom made exclusive cell phones... no one even swims they just check each other out lol
nareg May 8th, 2006, 08:11 PM A typical Lebanese trend (of coarse I'm not generalising).
No, I haven't been to the pool but been to one of the restaurants, I guess it was Burj el Hammam.
no one even swims they just check each other out
Let them not swim, so we can swim freely without being annoyed. :)
lebaneseangel May 9th, 2006, 12:38 AM thats it .,..im going there to swim!!! everywhere else is always crowded :)

Maltaboy May 9th, 2006, 01:12 AM May I suggest that a separate forum be created for Lebanon. This beautiful country deserves a forum of it's own instead of being kept in the open.
Beiruti May 9th, 2006, 01:45 AM ^^Maltaboy, thanks for your support thats what we have all been saying but I dont know what the problem is...

Lebanese Prince May 9th, 2006, 02:39 PM Do the Lebanese Muslim women participate in the beach life as well? And by participating I mean wearing a swimming suit, not sitting on the beach with your burka on. ;)
I know a lot Muslim women there don't wear like veils but I guess this is a bit different.
There is a ladies beach in Lebanon, but it's for all women not just Muslims women.
Lebanese Prince May 9th, 2006, 02:42 PM I like the beaches in Lebanon alot. I like beach clubs alot more than just a normal beach. My favorite beach clubs are The Roche beach club, Al-Jissir beach club, Fouadville, Elissa beach club. My favorite beach in Lebanon that isn't a beach club is Adloun Beach because since my father is from Adloun, I go there alot in the summer and we swim in the beach there.
Many beaches in Lebanon have jelly fish like Tyre and Al-Jissir beach club. Everytime I go there I come back home with red bite marks, lol
lebaneseangel May 9th, 2006, 05:38 PM i never got touched by a jelly fish yet. i see them a lot durring the middle of summer. but a lot of beach clubs have nets that seperate them from comming into the water where the swimmers are.
Beiruti May 9th, 2006, 07:48 PM In Khlade the beaches such as Villa Mar, Copa Cabanna, etc are really nice too... but my favorites are around Damour and Jiyeh

AMEN!!!! I wont go into open water now if u pay me!!! not even in the states .... even tho we dont have as big of a problem from jellyfish here!
LeB-iT May 10th, 2006, 12:07 AM Lebanon has nice beaches but it's sad how they've ruined all the cost by building right on the shores (especially in Jounieh)...there are actually no open long stretches of beaches left in Lebanon, which is due to poor planning and giving building permissions to the wrong people!
Jayme May 10th, 2006, 12:13 AM Lebanon has nice beaches but it's sad how they've ruined all the cost by building right on the shores (especially in Jounieh)...there are actually no open long stretches of beaches left in Lebanon, which is due to poor planning and giving building permissions to the wrong people!
That is so true Jounieh wood had a great beach line if it wasnt for all those buldings right on the shore. its all rock now ! i hate rock beachs

lebaneseangel May 24th, 2006, 03:57 PM well there are some free beaches..but these ones are basically country clubs(i know this is a beaches thread but thought i'd add it in)
here is one pool that is free..ill type in the stuff from the magazine for this one
----
pool with a view 3
Palm Beach Hotel Rooftop(ain el mreisseh)
it used to be called the skybar but now its simply the pool on the rooftop of the palm beach hotel. atill a destination of beiruts hot and hip-who come for the 2 jacuzzis and expensive champaagne. the pool mesures a 12m in length and is 80cm deep. but is located directly on the sea front it is vast, expansive view of the big blue free of concreate buildings that makes the swimming more like swimming on the sky. great for tanning but only able to accomodate about 30 ppl(so turn up early) this is probably the best urban rooftop pool in the capitol and its FREE
01 372 000
daily 9 am 8pm
----------
theres also a few places that are cheap..they just dont have them in this magazine. but my brother in law went some where for 5000LL($3.33) last week

Beiruti June 14th, 2006, 07:43 AM ^^ The one in Jounieh or Beirut?
Honestly the one in Jounieh is much better (there are actually two separate sections correct?)... well anyway have fun in the sun!
The Game Is Up June 15th, 2006, 07:01 AM Do the Lebanese Muslim women participate in the beach life as well? And by participating I mean wearing a swimming suit, not sitting on the beach with your burka on. ;)
I know a lot Muslim women there don't wear like veils but I guess this is a bit different.
Remember that Lebanon was once a French colony. So some of their philosophical views of society have obviously influenced the local population. ;)
Though I would think that it's different in Hezbollah country

To spotlessmind, Burkas are only work in Afghanistan and yes you are right most Lebanese women are not veiled.
Most women, and yes even the shia in "hezballah country" swim and enjoy the beach even though their swimsuits may be more conservative than the ones worn in Beirut and other cities.
Here are some pics of Lebanese women at the beach...

Beiruti June 15th, 2006, 07:35 AM abayas/burkas are also popular in GCC, Iran, Pakistan, etc. Not only Afghanistan
Abayas yes, but burkas are the traditional blue covering worn mostly in Afghanistan.
Skyline-BRN June 15th, 2006, 08:11 AM drmdham ive never seen any gulf lady wear a burka
drmadham June 15th, 2006, 09:17 AM drmdham ive never seen any gulf lady wear a burka
True. i didnt mean it in that sense. i assumed abaya and burka was the same, because i know people who use it interchangeably.
lebgurl June 15th, 2006, 09:34 AM ^^ even conservative muslim women who are covered up (with a veil or otherwise) have their own beach where they walk around in bikinis from wat i hear.
most muslim girls of beach-going age arent covered up anyways.. so u couldnt differentiate between them and others.
Jayme June 15th, 2006, 09:48 AM dose military beach is what i think it is
Pish-REZ-pash June 15th, 2006, 09:52 AM what's so special about the military beaches??
Pish-REZ-pash June 15th, 2006, 09:54 AM BTW those are some beautiful beaches you got there. Maybe for the fact that they're not artificial
Jayme June 15th, 2006, 09:59 AM what are military beachs
cmoonflyer June 15th, 2006, 02:45 PM Cool beaches , miss Beirut dearly - Had been to eleven years ago .......
lebaneseangel June 15th, 2006, 04:19 PM ^^ The one in Jounieh or Beirut?
Honestly the one in Jounieh is much better (there are actually two separate sections correct?)... well anyway have fun in the sun!
the one in jouneih. it has a pool that is half indoor/half outside, another seprate outdoor pool in the sun, and the beach....and there food is amazing and so are the prices. like only 1500-2000 for stuff like shish tawok, or cheese burger. also they have a nice restaurant in front.and a workout gym....
so does this mean i may be seeing u at the beach later this summer beirut? just look for the family playing find the 250 coin in the inside pool./..loool
Beiruti June 15th, 2006, 04:29 PM ^^ Yes I actually might just show up there at the beach because I am now going to Lebanon in a few weeks! I love the one in jounieh because the water is really nice, however the one in Beirut has a nicer sea because of the waves and all (jounieh's shore is more closed off because of the marina).
Beiruti June 15th, 2006, 04:33 PM what are military beaches?
Military beaches are semi-private beach clubs that cater to military families. However in recent years they have been more open to the general public and are well known for being clean, organized, and professional. There are two, one in Beirut and one in Jounieh and they are very popular because they are affordable as well and are large enough to accommodate hundreds of people.

Beiruti May 11th, 2007, 04:54 PM ^^ isnt that in Jounieh?? It's way to far from the airport
Nadini, there's one Military Beach Club in Ras Beirut by the Manara (Long Beach & Sporting Club are right next to it) and there's also one in Jounieh. I'm a Beiruti I know I'm talking about :)
LeB-iT May 12th, 2007, 02:41 PM ^^well i think it's he's talking about Oceana maybe?
Beiruti May 13th, 2007, 05:58 AM ^^ There are two Oceanas and neither are in Beirut or close to the airport.
asif iqbal May 15th, 2007, 04:46 PM Nadini that looks like the beech but airport seems far away but I could be wrong because it had road that runs parallel to it and at some point you have the hard rock cafe along the road and you pass it on the way to the beech.
Beirut I dont recall the names Military Beach Club or Long Beach I think it had "arabic" name for the beach!:) but whichever it was it was a great beach!
Beiruti May 15th, 2007, 05:58 PM ^^ Based on your description the road and name I am positive its the Military Beach Club (usually referred to by its Arabic name) or the Public Beach Nadini posted, because it couldnt be Long Beach or Rivera Beach Club. The question is, is the beach you went to a public sandy beach, or a rocky beach club with a large pool, restaurants, etc.?
Hassoun May 15th, 2007, 06:26 PM ^^ I think he meant ramlet l baida beach.
asif iqbal May 16th, 2007, 01:18 PM ^^ Based on your description the road and name I am positive its the Military Beach Club (usually referred to by its Arabic name) or the Public Beach Nadini posted, because it couldnt be Long Beach or Rivera Beach Club. The relentless pursuit of happiness in Lebanon
By Yara Bayoumy
Beirut - Young sexy models in flimsy lingerie spray champagne at a boisterous crowd of young Lebanese at a swanky beach resort south of Beirut -- barely a year after Israeli bombs were falling nearby.
Drinks in hand, shapely women in skimpy bikinis dance to the latest club song with men smoking Cuban cigars, underlining the image of a wealthy hedonist minority seizing any chance to escape their country's political crisis and uncertain future.
The scene at the Oceana beach resort near Damour seems a world away from Lebanon's sectarian tensions and political standoff symbolized by an opposition protest encampment that has paralyzed downtown Beirut for the past nine months.
The instability has crippled Lebanon's tourist season, but at least some Lebanese are determined to ignore worries about a new civil war or the army's three-month-old battle with Islamist militants at a Palestinian refugee camp in the north.
"We've lived through times with war and bombs. So it doesn't make a difference to us any more. Blood doesn't scare us," said beachgoer Dany Zougheib, a 32-year-old computer expert, recalling the war between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas.
Trying to recover from that conflict, some upscale resorts are luring customers back with lingerie fashion shows, open-air concerts or international disc jockeys -- Dutch DJ Tiesto drew a rapturous crowd of 15,000 to Edde Sands resort near Byblos in July, with ticket prices ranging from $35 to $75.
Oceana's show on Sunday featured teenage Ukrainian models prancing on stage by the sparkling Mediterranean in everything from shimmery and diamante-encrusted bikinis to lacy underwear.
Their faux chain and faux fur lingerie along with kitsch French maid costumes attracted wolf whistles and furious camera clicking from Lebanese men -- many of them showing off body tattoos and designer boxers beneath their swimming shorts.
"Until three weeks ago, it seemed that people couldn't forget the scars of last year's war. But now Damour is back again," said Fady Saba, Oceana's general manager, referring to the coastal strip about 20 km (13 miles) from Beirut.
"I'm not worried about Lebanese people. They're forcing themselves to have fun because they want to forget. They don't want to know anything about the crisis," he said.
"WE WON'T STOP LIVING"
It certainly seemed so at the weekend in Oceana where Lebanese were dancing non-stop at the pool bar, ordering copious bottles of wine or tanning lazily on private wooden platforms.
Away from the beach resorts, Beirut's bar and club strips on Rue Gemayze and Rue Monot are once again heaving with people and pulsating with music into the early hours at weekends.
Lebanon has always been a favored tourist destination in the Middle East, especially for Gulf Arabs, because of its mild weather, beaches, nightlife and relatively liberal atmosphere.
While tensions between the Western-backed government and Hezbollah-led opposition have scared off most foreigners -- who usually account for up to 40 percent of Oceana's clientele -- some Arab tourists just cannot stay away.
"I've been coming to Lebanon since 1995. It was hellish last year when we had to escape the war via Syria, but here I am again. I wouldn't choose to spend summer anywhere else," said Khaled al-Omari from Kuwait as he basked in the sun.
Young Lebanese were also adamant about making the most of their summer despite a brewing crisis over presidential polls.
"We're worried about the presidential elections, but we're not going to stop living until politicians agree on something," said Mark Khoury, 26, lounging near the poolside bar.

melkart May 19th, 2009, 04:19 AM Remember that Lebanon was once a French colony. So some of their philosophical views of society have obviously influenced the local population. ;)
Though I would think that it's different in Hezbollah country
Lebanon was a French mandate but never a colony! Algeria, and Morocco those were colonies! :)

Lebanese Cedar May 20th, 2009, 01:38 AM What is "janna sur mer"?
It means "Paradise on the sea"
Janna being the Arabic word for "Paradise," while Sur Mer meaning "On the Sea" in French.
In Lebanon, it's quite common to combine Arabic and French.
