^^ What does that have to do with the stadiums becoming white elephants?

Do you think a single team - in this case Bafana Bafana - would ever be able to support a number of stadiums and keep them all from becoming white elephants? Other teams and sports exist, and other events do take place in stadiums, you know.

I suggest you go inform yourself before making silly accusations, as it only makes you seem silly yourself. Bafana Bafana, quite frankly, suck...that is the reason people aren't buying tickets for them.

Which venues are white elephants? 6 of them are already in regular use or have existing tenants, while most, have stadium operators.

If you're going to try and make some point at least back it up with a relevant article.

Which ones don't have stadium operators and thus supported with public resources? Was anyone interested in the stadiums in Nelspruit and Polokwane?

The poster in question has something against South Africa in general. It's the same poster from the Olympic thread that kept harping on about Delhi 2020. So I guess we should ignore it :)

We are all concerned about Nelspruit and Polokwane but each stadium cost close to R1 billion. For this cost, it would be ludicrous not to build a stadium, funded nationally, to receive other infrastructure benefits which far exceed the stadium cost.

Expenditure on transport is many times higher than stadia, and improvements to many of the existing football/rugby venues just means a longer lifespan for many of them, and a boost for the clubs using them.

In fact, Polokwane already has test events lined up,and if they can use the venue for all sorts of events, whether its community or local or religious gatherings, then that's fine.

The main aim is just to use the venue, regardless of the event and ensure a reasonable maintenance allocation.

Thanks Mo. I'm pretty sure we're going to go through the same problem at least in Manaus and Cuiabá in 2014, so it's important to know South Africa's precedent.

Could be several reasons, but my guess would be money.

I can tell you this much, a friend of mine who has been to every World Cup since 1994, was planning on going to South Africa as well. When he found out that air fare would be around $3,000 round trip, he changed his mind.

Jeez that is suprising given germany's success in the past 7 world cups that include playing in the final match 4 times, losing in a semi finals and twice losing in the qtr finals. Germany is a consistent team they should be bringing atleast 30,000 fans.

Dude,
No matter how die hard fan you are,
The safety, security and even the surroundings for an enthusiatic event are lacking in SA2010.
This way most fans may be turned down going to SA with all its history and deficiencies well known to the world.

It's all about money. You have to pay at least €2,000 for a trip and quite a few people don't feel like travelling to a country with single digit temps (in some places) for their summer holiday.

Yip. The German tourists flock to Cape Town in our Summer times.

Although, in April-May 2009, we saw 27,334 arrivals from Germany.

Germany is 4th in Cape Town, in terms of international visitors, with UK, USA and Australia being the larger sources of tourists/visitors.

World Cup 2010: South Africans Will Be Able To Buy From Ticket Offices In April
LOC CEO Danny Jordaan has revealed that, from April onwards, fans will be able to buy World Cup tickets over the counter in exchange for cash.

This was the news at a press conference at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium, where it was also announced that the city will host 100 days to the World Cup celebrations.

“Purchasing of tickets closer to the process that South African football fans are accustomed to will take effect in April,” Jordaan revealed.

“Then fans will be able to walk in and walk out of ticket offices to make their purchases.

“We acknowledge that the average fan has become frustrated with the current system, therefore we decided to use this method."

Included on the 100 days celebrations itinerary will be the banquet to honour Africa’s 11 greatest footballers such as Steve Kalamazoo, Abedi Pele, George Weah and Lucas Radebe.

Special recognition will also be given to the six African countries that have qualified for the global event, as well as the host cities for putting up 10 world-class venues.

The day’s festivities are likely to end with a football match at the venue. Both Jordaan and Durban mayor Obed Mlaba concurred that it would be ideal to have Bafana Bafana in action on that day, but at the same time agreed that it depended on whether Carlos Alberto Parreira is up for such an outing.

Some members of my family are going to South Africa, following the mexican team. Its a shame that i will not be able to make it because of my job.

Here in Mexico most are going for the "game", mostly are true fans that are willing to spend $6,000 USD for the trip. Here we know very little about SA, and I think that the SA board of tourism must be more activly showing and promoting their country. A lot of people here have the tickets and everything, but dont know much about what to do, other than attending the matches.

Up to December 4 2009, about 9,000 mexicans had tickets. But the core of the mexicans will make their travel arrangements before the 3rd round of ticket sales.

I think that the economy and weather will be hard to beat factors.

I honestly hope that SA can put a terrific WC, because that will demostrate that more countries can host a big tournament, and no only highly developed countries (USA, England, Germany, Japan......)

Durban to kick off 100-day countdown to World Cup

On March 2, South Africa will be marking 100 days until the country welcomes the Fifa World Cup. In anticipation to the grand event, Durban will be kicking off the 100 days milestone with a massive party.
The province will host the official celebration with 2010 Local Organising Committee’s blessing.
The extravagant party would include a special gala banquet and a football match at Durban's new Moses Mabhida Stadium.

"We came to Durban to get a commitment from the city and province to host this milestone event - the last official World Cup event before the opening ceremony in June," said Danny Jordaan, chief executive of the 2010 Local Organising Committee.
"Now that we have their full backing, the finer details will be sorted out. This includes who will be attending the celebrations and which two teams will play in the big match.
"Durban has shown its ability in hosting major events and we know it will deliver. The 2010 Fifa World Cup Preliminary Draw took place here in 2007 and it was the best one ever held, so we are confident the 100-day countdown on March 2 will be another spectacular event."

An ecstatic Durban mayor, Obed Mlaba, said it was a tremendous honour to host the 100-days countdown and Durban would be pulling out all the stops.
"Bafana Bafana could possibly play in the match depending on their schedules," he said.
"Who knows, we may even use the opportunity to officially open our new Moses Mabhida Stadium. While it is already operational and has hosted several matches, we are yet to have an official opening of the stadium.
"KZN local government MEC Nomusa Dube said the province was proud and humbled to host the event."Durban is the sporting Mecca of Africa and this event will be another of our major coups," she said.

Durban to host 100-days to World Cup party

By: Mack Makhathini
Durban - The City of Durban will host the official 100 Days Celebration event before the 2010 Fifa World Cup kick off in June.
The celebration will take place on 2 March 2010.
The announcement was made by Danny Jordaan, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) during a media briefing at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube said the City of Durban and the Province would pull out all the stops to ensure the success of the event.
“It’s all systems go for the 100 days celebration event.
“We are a South Africa’s sporting Mecca and the event will be an opportunity to show our readiness to host the World Cup,” said Dube.
EThekwini Mayor Obed Mlaba also promised delegates “the best celebration event”.
“We might do this in conjunction with the official opening of the Moses Mabhida Stadium, but it will be over ambitious of us to say what we are going to do during this event. The hosting of the event by our City was only announced today, so we are still to sit down and discuss the details,” said Mlaba.
The Mayor said all the details of the 100-Day celebration event would be unveiled to everyone at the right time.
Jordaan said the celebration would include a variety of activities.
“We have come to Durban to put this proposal to the Mayor and he has agreed to host the event. We all know that Durban is more than capable of holding big events and this City has a good track record of organizing successful events,” he said.
Jordaan added that there were 3.43 million tickets and of these, 50 percent had been sold. He also promised that the stadiums would be full during the World Cup and that the ticket prices were in line with the previous World Cups.

Question for you South Africans. I'm going to be in South Africa for the World Cup and am looking at the possibility of having to travel from Johannesburg to Bloemfontein for the United States' round of 16 match. Is there a way to make it a single day trip, getting there in the morning and getting back at night? What's the best way to go? Plane, train, drive? Any recommendations would be appreciated and also, how difficult would it be to get a train or plane ticket on four days notice if that's what it comes to?

Bloemfontein is really not that far from Johannesburg and really easy to get between the two cities. For an American, the drive is not bad at all, coming from a larger country where road-trips are the norm. It's not more than a 4hour drive, imagine LA to Las Vegas in distance; however the drive is a little boring, looks like Nebraska :).

All you do is take the N1 freeway south out of Johannesburg and continue straight till you hit Bloemfontein.

Here is the website for the inter-provincial train services: http://www.shosholozameyl.co.za/
For the flights: http://www.flyexpress.aero/index.php

Yes, trains do go between Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, problem is the schedules are not frequent enough for your needs, and this is also not a main train route, as that line serves only the small cities of Bloemfontein and East London. Again, few flights to Bloemfontein, as the city is small and most people just drive, so many carriers don't service it from Johannesburg. As far as I know, it's only the SA Express "puddle jumper" that does the route, although flights are frequent. Although, as with any airline in the world, when you book last minute, you pay a lot more!

I would honestly advise, with having such "last minute" needs, just rent a car. South Africa's highways and freeways are generally of a 1st world level, easy to navigate, well marked and very often, just like driving in the USA (albeit you'll have to drive on the Left!!!). Intercity traffic is generally not too heavy and the speed limit is 120km/h (75MPH).

Thanks. Really appreciate the info. It looks like driving is the way to go. The trains are infrequent, but will they schedule additional trains for the month of the World Cup? Just curious if I should definitely stick with the car or if I should keep an eye on additional trains to handle the thousands that will be looking to go city to city.

2010 FIFA World Cup: two million tickets sold

By: Issa Sikiti da Silva (http://www.bizcommunity.com/Article/196/147/44165.html#contact)
The number of tickets sold so far for the 2010 FIFA World Cup has reached the two million mark, FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke told a media briefing yesterday, Wednesday, 27 January 2010, at the Sandton Sun Hotel in Johannesburg.
http://mars.bizcommunity.com/c/1001/43511.jpgValcke said that 1 206 865 applications from 192 countries have been received during the third ticket sale phase, which ended on 22 January, and which will conclude with a random draw for oversubscribed matches.

The next ticket sale phase will begin on 9 February and close on 7 April, with 400 000 tickets to be made available on a first come first serve basis, Valcke added.

He said SA residents have shown a tremendous interest during the third phase, culminating to 79% of the total applications received - an increase of 24.9% compared to earlier phases.

Outside SA, the US tops the list of applications received in the third phase with 50 217, followed by UK (41 529), Australia (15 523), Mexico (14 804), Germany (14 647) and Brazil (10 767).

Fans in neighbouring states show interest

SA's neighbours, Botswana (2519), Mozambique (1795) and Namibia (1191), also seem to be showing an increasing interest in the 2010 games.

“The good news is that when we met yesterday [Tuesday] in Zurich, we made some important decisions, which include significantly increasing the number of category four tickets for SA,” Valcke said.

Category four refers to the most affordable tickets which cost a mere US$20 (R140).

“We are happy that South Africans are now buying tickets and rallying behind their team. We are in good shape and we have no doubt that things will vastly improve in the next five months,” LOC CEO Danny Jordaan told reporters.

Making it easier

Asked whether FIFA is heeding a call to simplify the ticket sale process that is frustrating many fans, Horst Schmidt, chairman of FIFA ticketing subcommittee, said that from 15 April onwards some tickets will be sold over the counter at selected points of sale in each host city.

Every buyer will collect his or her ticket right away, he said.

The organisers also said that two call centres will be open during the fourth ticket sale phase to enhance the process, including assisting fans with enquiries and applications.

The numbers to call are 083 123 2010 (SA) and 0041 44 58 3 2010 (international).

Furthermore, Schmidt said that 55 matches are oversubscribed in at least one category.

The most oversubscribed matches are the Brazil-Portugal game, Cape Town semi-final, Durban semi-final and the Johannesburg final.

Meanwhile, the organisers said that public sentiment ahead of 2010 FIFA World Cup remains high in SA.

A poll conducted by Sport+Markt, an international research company, on behalf of FIFA suggests a strong emotional commitment to the tournament, in particular a pronounced sense of pride (90%) in being the first African nation to host the world's biggest soccer feast.

Of the potential advantages of hosting the tournament, inflation remains the biggest concern for SA respondents, with 70% believing consumer goods will become more expensive as a result of the competition.

Thanks. Really appreciate the info. It looks like driving is the way to go. The trains are infrequent, but will they schedule additional trains for the month of the World Cup? Just curious if I should definitely stick with the car or if I should keep an eye on additional trains to handle the thousands that will be looking to go city to city.

Apologies for late reply.

"Ndebele said the Department of Transport would provide a fleet of 2 035 luxury and standard buses, 60 train sets and 1 000 bus coaches. Some 1 400 luxury coaches had been procured which would become part of government's fleet once the event is over. "Rail will serve as the backbone of our transport system during the world cup. We have committed that by 2010 there will be a train available every five minutes in peak times and train services 14 - 16 hours a day. After all the Soccer World Cup is not just about sport; the Soccer World Cup in 2010 is about sport," said Ndebele. "

So for someone visiting SA during the world cup. which will be the best way to move around the country??? bus, plane, train??? In the case that you will be arriving to J'burg, and following the mexican team to Polokwane and Rustenburg.

Also looking for Mexico first round tickets, if anybody has them, let me know by a PM

those 3 cities aren't all that far from each other so i'd take a bus (if i couldn't find a rental car).

IMHO if you really want to see South Africa, hire a car & drive I guarantee you 90% of the roads linking the major cities are in pristine condition, I say that with utmost confidence seeing as I drive alot. Durban to Joburg is about a 600km journey which should take the avg person 5 hours. Joburg to Cape Town on the other hand is pretty far, but if you just want to get to your destination quickly, plan is the best. Buses are ok, but they take very very long to go places. you looking at 8 hours minimum from Jhb to Dbn.

^^ totally agree. plus the road trips here are priceless. but i've heard that all of avis' cars are booked for that period already. and that's after they purchased an extra load.

What is the mood in SA at the moment? Is there a buzz in the air in anticipation or is it business as usual.... Only 4months now, and I'm getting quite excited about it. Just wondered if some of you in amongst it could gauge the feeling, feel the pulse of the nation for me.

Thanks.

Its really starting to kick in now, but with so many other things going on its hard to concentrate on 1 event.

^^ more and more people, who didn't show much interest initially, are applying for tickets so the mood is picking up. i think it depends a lot on where you live and how much construction is going on in that area. the road works here in gauteng are nearing completion and other infrastructure is being finalised, so a lot of nay sayers are also starting to be more optimistic.

All the stadiums really look nice. Even the old ones are very good. Ellis Park, Free State and Roayal Bafokeng are in great shape. Loftus Versfeld stadiums pitch is looking very bad what is up with that? Rugby tor it up? And they aren't even finished putting the light blue seats in either??

Very nice indeed.
How come SS is down to 88k? Is that due to advertising or segregation or something?

What is the proportion of seats covered by the roof is Soccer City stadium? Doesn't look like more than 50% to me.

All the stadiums really look nice. Even the old ones are very good. Ellis Park, Free State and Roayal Bafokeng are in great shape. Loftus Versfeld stadiums pitch is looking very bad what is up with that? Rugby tor it up? And they aren't even finished putting the light blue seats in either??

those are pre season pics. there will rugby games in coming weeks so pitch has to be in a good condition for that. there's no point in installing new seats too early and having worn out seats by the time the WC kicks off. all rugby games are being moved elsewhere as the EC draws near so the pitch can be spared and prepared for football.

Soccer City (Johannesburg) has probably around 50% coverage, but remember, it does not rain in most of South Africa from May-Oct (SA is mostly a summer rainfall country), except for Cape Town, where winter's are very wet.

those are not world cup stadiums, those look ameaturish, just not good enough for a world cup. im disapointed. i dont think africa or at least south africa was ready to host a world cup.

And, how exactly, do they suck ass? Please, enlighten us all as to why they aren't fit enough dear oracle.

And while you're at it, considering Africa isn't ready to host a world cup according to you, please give us a breakdown of all the infrastructual issues we apparently have.

Think the oracle has issues.......frankly I don't think Europe is ready to host any major international sporting event due to Spanish terrorists, the Afgan on terrorism war, racist crimes in Russia, London being on high alert for potential terrorist attacks, blah, blah, blah.

Wonderful photos Mo, despite what our noob says. I have to say, Soccer City is a bizarre looking stadium from above isn't it? I'd always assumed, from the images/renders at ground level that the roof would continue with the mosaic effect.

the mosaics are concrete panels...not sure if thats practical for a roof.

but would have been nice if it continued with an inner glass cantilever.

2010 stadiums are better than the 2014 ones. The only good venue is the new 46 000 stadium in Natal. I like all the stadiums each is unique in it's own way. From history to culture to setting.

I would say Free state stadium is the worst they really should have replaced more seats with green. The rustenburg venue is the smallest but the atmosphere makes it feel like a 70 000 stadia.

Models for the coming late-autumn/winter... WC 2010 long-term forecast (May-Jul)

http://www.gfcsa.net/CSAG/fcst/rain_mon4.gif
http://www.gfcsa.net/CSAG/fcst/rain_mon5.gif

Temperature Anomalies

April-June

http://www.gfcsa.net/CSAG/fcst/ts_sa_seas2.gif

May-July

http://www.gfcsa.net/CSAG/fcst/ts_sa_seas3.gif

Synopsis of forecast

Temperature:

The far southern and south-western corners of South Africa will experience below normal temperatures, but not exceeding 1ºC below average. The Highveld looks to be marginally above normal, within the 0.5ºC-1ºC range. The east cast is looking closer to 1ºC above normal, with far northern regions of SA looking closer to 1.5ºC above normal.

Precipitation:

South Africa is generally looking much wetter than normal for that time of year, however, with precipitation being primarily summer-rainfall in northern and eastern regions, a significant increase does not mean constant rain/snowfall. The Western and Southern Cape are looking significantly wetter, with a 150% increase in precipitation on already wet months. July however, is looking drier in these areas, ranging from 100% of normal in the interior, to slightly below-normal at 80% near the coastal regions. The exception is the central east coast (KZN), which is posting a below normal rainfall for June.

Thus projected winter averages for 2010, accounting for the long-term forecasts:

Bloemfontein: Ave. Max: 14ºC; Ave. Min: -3ºC
Cape Town: Ave. Max: 16ºC; Ave. Min: 7ºC
Durban: Ave. Max: 24ºC; Ave. Min: 12ºC
Johannesburg: Ave. Max: 16ºC; Ave. Min: 4ºC
Polokwane: Ave. Max: 20ºC; Ave. Min: 5ºC
Port Elizabeth: Ave. Max: 19ºC; Ave. Min: 9ºC

It's the World Cup, not a popularity contest... they don't "deserve" to win it just because they just underwent a catastrophy, that would be utterly absurd!

And BTW: I'm from the same country as you are, pal :tongue2:

Regardless of the catastrophe, Chile has a pretty good team and I'm sure their offensive football will be a joy to watch. And now they'll probably extra motivated. I hope they don't play against Brazil in the Round of 16 again.

EDIT: I just realised it's the 2nd straight friendly game that the Chileans have to cancel because of supervenient factors. First the death of Robert Enke, now the earthquake. Someone put a spell on them.

I heard somewhere that the grass fro msome stadiums like Ellis Park is suitable for Rugby matches and there is a championship going on so they will change it for football matches later this semester.

There is no truth in that. Different grass types and grass cutting heights between rfu and af are outdated by 15 years. Rugby players demand and complain if grass is longer and spongier tha it is for football. Rugby is very much a running game in comparison to 20 years ago. Pitch profiles have changed and firmer surfaces are now the norm.

What you will have heard is that due to a current match schedule the transitional seeding and renovations will take place after the scheduled rugby matches. The focus will then be on bringing the surface up to standard for the world cup. So long as the fundamentals are in place now there should be no problems. There is however one stadium which i cannot mention which will have problems if it does not re-address the fundamental design of the playing surface prior to the world cup.

What are you most excited about when you come to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup? This poll is open to foreigners only please, thus no South Africans (we want the inter-city bias out of it). With 90 days to go, which place excites you most... or are you just here for the game and don't really care, that's fine too. Die Hard Pure Fan! :)

You may also comment as to your reasons. You are allowed more than one choice, as many people may want lots out of their experience here. Will be interesting to see WC visitor/fan preferences prior to the opening in June.

hahaha - the only one who's sustainability i'm concerned about is polokwane.

If Black Leorpads gets into PSL there wont be a problem. There is still Dynamos. My only concern is the stadium in Mpumalanga... Are they going to let that crappy rugby team use it, whereas they ddnt want the Mpumalanga Black Aces to use their stadium?

Wow.
Trully one of the 2 most impressive stadiums in South Africa.
I hope Mexico get's to play here as well.

Going back to the jersey talk, Mexico will be using a black jersey as an alternative to the green one, instead of white.

I like these new uniform as well, it's quite elegant.
How ever I don't really see the mexican flag un black.
I guess I prefer the green, white and red uniform and the old alternative one, the whit one.
Even a red one good be good as an alternative.

Well, IDK, what they did.
But I will protest, I dont agree whit the uniform.

Mexico's main uniform is
T-shirt Green
Shorts White
Sox Red (In the last few games they used white, which I don;t agree whit it).

Alternative all white whit some green and red highlights.
But it seems that the current one will be black, just as the photos above.

Life's a beach in World Cup city of Durban
South Africa's most-popular holiday resort city expected to draw thousands to its sand and sun
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4/zuidafrica/DurbanUmhlangaSAfirstFive-starHotel.jpg
By Robert Millward, AP Football Writer
Associated Press | Posted: Apr 1, 5:52a ET | Updated: Apr 1, 5:52a ET

DURBAN, South Africa (AP) -- If World Cup fans going to South Africa want a taste of sun, sea and sand before they head for the games, they should book themselves into Durban.
Built on a huge natural lagoon in Africa's biggest and busiest harbor, Durban has a year-round warm, subtropical climate, soft, sandy beaches and is South Africa's most popular domestic holiday resort.
The draw was kind to sun-seeking fans from Germany, Australia, Spain, Netherlands, Portugal and Brazil, who all have games in the east coast city at its spectacular 70,000-seat Moses Mabhida football stadium just outside the center.
Though hot and very humid in the summer, temperatures are around 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) in the winter, when the World Cup is being held June 11-July 11, and rarely dip below 16 degrees C (62 degrees F) at night.
What began as a small trading post settled by the British in 1824, Durban spread along the coast and now has a population of 3.5 million. Most of those are Zulu, although 15 percent have origins in India, their families having crossed the Indian Ocean several generations ago.
Like Johannesburg and Cape Town, Durban has a crime problem but it is mainly concentrated in the townships, well away from the tourist areas.
"It's easy to police the city," said Dr. Zweli Mikhize, premier of the province of KwaZulu-Natal. "The whole area is much more highly policed than before. I wouldn't worry about that, not at all. The football World Cup has done wonders for us. There's huge investments in infrastructure, facilities and prevention of crime."
A new international airport, the King Shaka, is being built to allow direct flights from abroad rather than via Johannesburg. Also known as La Mercy, after the name of the nearest town 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of the city, it should be completed by May, a month before the World Cup kicks off, and will replace the existing Durban Airport, which will be closed.
While the main tourist hotels overlook the beaches and the ocean, the cruise liners and yachts moor around the corner in the Bay of Natal. The city's business and entertainment centers are in between.
The main sports arenas, Kingsmead cricket ground, Kings Park rugby stadium and Moses Mabhida, are situated a short drive away.
The football stadium has a unique feature-a Y-shaped arch which visitors can climb either by going up the 560 steps or using the cable car. The top of the arch gives the best view possible of the city and the ocean.
The city has four Premier League clubs, Amazulu, Golden Arrows, Thanda Royal Zulu and Maritzburg United, and is the home of Super 14 rugby union team Sharks. The Sharks play at the Kings Park, which is next to the spectacular new football ground.
Durban has had a long football history and the biggest match it has hosted was when South Africa played a full strength England national team in 2002. Durban was also the venue for South Africa's first post-apartheid game when the national team played Cameroon, winning 1-0 at Kings Park. The city also hosted group, quarterfinal and semifinal matches during the 1996 African Cup of Nations.
The new three-tiered stadium will be part of a Kings Park sporting precinct, which will also include athletics, rugby, golf and swimming.

Giant arch turns Durban stadium into tourist trap

2010 WORLD CUP: World Cup fans will see Durban stadium arch as bonus attraction

By Robert Millward
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4/zuidafrica/Durban2010WCStadiumInside.jpg
DURBAN, South Africa (AP) - Fans going to Durban's spectacular new football stadium will get a view no other World Cup spectator has had before.
A gigantic Y-shaped arch which spans the length of the Moses Mabhida Stadium has steps and a cable car ride that will take visitors 106 meters (350 feet) above the field with a panoramic view of the city and its beaches.
If they take the car ride rather than the 520 steps, fans can stand on a walkway high above the stadium and, although they can see little of the field, the view is breathtaking, if not a little scary.
Months before the World Cup arrives in Durban on June 13, the arch is being put to use as a tourist attraction and is likely to be a money maker long after the tournament finishes on July 11 as organizers aim to make up the $450 million cost of building the stadium.
It emerged in March that the city council in charge of Durban's new World Cup venue had been given 60 days to ensure that the cable car above the stadium is safe after an incident in which it became stuck, leaving its passengers stranded.
Safety inspectors visited the stadium following media reports and complaints about the stranded passengers.
The stadium sits alongside the 56,000-capacity Kings Park rugby stadium, which is the home to the Sharks rugby union team and regularly hosts national team games. It was strongly hoped that the Sharks would move next door to the new stadium but they have a 50-year lease on Kings Park and only a huge amount of money will persuade them to leave.
There have also been rumors that the Moses Mabhida Stadium, which has plenty of space for a running track, might be the venue if South Africa bids to host the first Olympics to be staged on the African continent. But that is unlikely to be before 2024 and local government officials are coy when asked about the prospects because the South African government first has to decide whether to mount an Olympic bid and where it should be.
Meanwhile, the three-tiered stadium seems certain to be one of the wonders of this year's World Cup.
Only about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) outside the city center, it is also a short walk from the ocean and organizers are building a complex and a walkway so that spectators can easily get to the complex from the beaches.
Once inside, fans will be able to see former World Cup winners Brazil and Germany, two-time runner-up Netherlands and current European champion Spain play at the 70,000-capacity stadium. The ground will also stage a second round match and a semifinal match.
Germany and Australia will play in the first match in Group D on June 13 and, three days later, Spain will face Switzerland in Group H. The Netherlands will take on Japan in Group E on June 19, and Nigeria will face South Korea in Group B three days later.
The stadium then has one of the highlights of the first round, Portugal vs. Brazil, on June 25 in Group G.

Al-Qaeda Group Threatens to Attack World Cup

The North African terror group al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has threatened to attack this summer's World Cup games in South Africa.

"How amazing could the match United States vs. Britain be when broadcasted live on air at a stadium packed with spectators when the sound of an explosion rumbles through the stands, the whole stadium is turned upside down and the number of dead bodies are in their dozens and hundreds, Allah willing," reads a statement the group published in a recent issue of the Jihadi online magazine Mushtaqun Lel Jannah (Longing to Paradise).

The statement also highlights recent actions by the terrorism group such as the December suicide bombing that killed seven CIA employees and a Jordanian agent at a base in Eastern Afghanistan last December and the Christmas Day bombing attempt that resulted in the arrest of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian who has been cooperating with the FBI and providing information about his contacts in Yemen and the al Qaeda affiliate that operates there.

Special Report: The Christmas Day Terror Attack

"Al Qaeda, who managed to deliver 50 grams of explosives to the Detroit plane, after infiltrating dozens of U.S. security barriers, al Qaeda, who enabled brother martyr Abul Kheir (Abdullah Asiri) to get into the palace of Mohammed bin Nayef, al Qaeda, who humiliated the world's greatest intelligence apparatus through the operation of Mujahid Abu Dujana al-Khorassani (Humam al-Balawi), who shattered the pride of the CIA and the Jordanian intelligence combined," the statement says. "Al Qaeda will have a presence in the games, Allah willing."

In addition to the U.S. and U.K. teams, the teams representing France, Germany and Italy are also on the group's list of targets.

"All those countries are part of the Zionist-Crusader campaign against Islam," the statement says.

The group says they will use some undetectable explosive that will be able to circumvent security checkpoints at the games. The statement appears to directly challenge FIFA's president Joseph Blatter.

"All the security checks and X-ray machines that America will be sending after reading this article would not be capable of detecting how those explosives made it into the stadium and that for a simple reason that we will be announcing in due course," the statement says. "So are your preparations for this event up to scratch, Mr. Platter? (sic)"

South Africa had announced last October that its security forces had foiled an al Qaeda plot to carry out a terrorist attack during the 2010 football World Cup. According to reports published then, South Africa's National Intelligence Agency, senior police forces and American agents jointly conducted the operation, which led to the arrest of a number of suspects linked to the group in Somalia and Mozambique working on a plot to carry out bomb attacks during the games.

I know probably nothing is going to happen - if you're going to plan a terrorist attack, you don't announce where and and when it will be.

But wouldn't you be scared to go to a place at the exact moment terrorists said it would be very "interesting" to perform an attack? They're probably bluffing - but the ones who are calling this bluff are betting their lives on it. If I had tickets it the game I'd give them up immediately - I would not be willing to bet my life on it.

From what i know tickets have up until now only been sold over the net. From 15. april they go on open sale. Many South Africans will probably buy then.
But this is a problem you can get when you put world cups so far away from Europe. Remember that half the teams qualified and many of the fans will come from that continent. I remember that there allso was some unsold tickets at the bigeiing of Korea/Japan in 2002 for some of the lesser interesting games..

True the Korea/Japan world cup was terrible. They had like 20 different stadiums some of them only had 10,000 in them. Hopfully most of the tickets will be sold out. For the average south african a ticket is expensive though. I don't think Brasil will have troubles selling tickets.

Fizmo1337
April 11th, 2010, 03:10 AM
The problem for Europeans is not the ticket price (well, it adds up too ofc), it's the very expensive flight tickets and hotel prices. Flightcarriers and hotel owners know ofc it's World Cup and they triple their prices. To watch a few games in South Africa it would probably cost at least 3 000 € per person for 1 or maybe 2 weeks and than your lucky!!

With fanzones all over Europe during a WC it's much cheaper to go to a fanzone and enjoy it on a big screen.

hugenholz
April 11th, 2010, 04:48 AM
Rumours say that the 500.000 unsold tickets are not the only problem regarding the expected empty stands. Touroperators, ticket-offices who already have bought a numerous amount of tickets can't sell these tickets either because of the bad interest. In previous world cups you saw many empty stands but the official attendance showed most of the time a "sold out" this was because of the tour and ticket operators' unsold tickets.

In South Africa I except an average attendance of 60 percent. The average stadium capacity in South Africa is 58.000 (10 stadiums totals 582000) with 64 matches

The record of the highest average attendance was during the WC in 1994 in the USA, 68,991 per match

apparently DURBAN IS NOW SOLD OUT FOR 2010 WORLD CUP TICKETS... But with FIFA you never know...:bash:

FIFA: Semifinals, final of WCup sold out
(AP) – 1 hour ago

JOHANNESBURG — Some 100,000 World Cup tickets have been sold in the first 24 hours of the final phase, and the semifinals and final are sold out.
FIFA announced Friday that 29 of the 64 matches are sold out. That includes all games in the coastal cities of Cape Town and Durban.
"We are very pleased with the interest and with the latest figures," FIFA ticketing subcommittee chairman Horst Schmidt said.
The opening game is also sold out between host South Africa and Mexico at Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium on June 11.
FIFA said tickets were still available for one quarterfinal and the third and fourth playoffs, as well as a selection of final 16 and group games.
Some less popular matches, like South Korea vs. Greece at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth and Paraguay vs. New Zealand in the northern city of Polokwane, are yet to sell out tickets in any of the four seat categories.
Seven matches still have unsold tickets in all four ticket categories, including the lowest priced one for locals. Another eight games have only sold out the cheapest tickets.
FIFA did not say how many tickets had been sold in each category, only that some were "available", some had "few tickets" and some were "unavailable."
Local organizers have said they will ensure that all World Cup games are full to avoid shots of empty seats on international broadcasts.
As a result, they may be forced to give away free tickets to schools or charities. That would have an impact on the economic benefit of the World Cup for the local committee, which is counting on much of its revenue from ticket sales.
The estimated $3.3 billion that the World Cup makes from commercial rights and marketing goes to FIFA.
FIFA and the local organizing committee have previously acknowledged worries over certain "low interest" games where tickets are not selling.
Foreign ticket sales, particularly in Europe, have also been disappointing. Fewer than 350,000 people are expected to travel to the country for Africa's first World Cup, down from initial estimates of 450,000.
The final ticket batch was released Thursday, and fans in South Africa could buy over the counter for the first time. However, there were technical problems with the ticketing systems.
Police were called to at least three centers to calm angry fans who faced lengthy delays.
Fans can make purchases at 11 ticket centers and a network of 600 bank branches. Supermarkets across South Africa will start selling World Cup tickets on Monday.
FIFA was criticized for waiting so long to simplify the process for local fans, who have low incomes and are unfamiliar with buying tickets on the Internet.
Organizers are looking to sell the final 500,000 of the 2.7 million total tickets during the latest phase.

Dont know if something similar has been posted before, but though the list below would be interresting, amusing, and useful to all the lucky buggers who get to travel to SA for the WC :D

South Africa's many cultures and languages have merged over the years, transforming the English language into a homegrown variety that's not only distinct, but also as colourful and humorous as the people who speak it.

Here are a couple of words and phrases, together with their meanings to ensure that you enjoy (and understand) the local lingo.

Babbelas - Afrikaans for hangover

Bergie - the homeless of Cape Town

Biltong - dried and seasoned meat - a national treasure

Boer - Afrikaans for farmer (considered offensive by Afrikaners if used to clasify them)

Braai - a real barbecue. Braaiing is a national past time and the turning of the meat whilst holding a beer in the other hand is taken very seriously. Golden rule: don't mess with the firemaker's fire.

Broer / bru / bro - my brother or mate

Bucks - Refers to money, particularly, South African currency

Bunny chow - a half a loaf of bread that has its inner part scooped out and replaced with curry.

Chop - refers to an idiot.

Dop - an alcoholic beverage, 'Come over to the pub for a dop.'

Dorp - Afrikaans for town.

Doss - sleep, 'I took a doss on the couch for a while.'

Fundi - a clever person or an expert in isiXhosa.

Gatsby - a large chip roll with a variety of fillings including processed meats, cheese and sauce.

Hectic - a word used to describe the intensity of an event or happening. 'Wow the wind is hectic, man.'

Helluva - 'Hell of a' said very quickly and in a strong South African accent. Expresses 'a lot of'.

Hey - used at the end of the sentence to punctuate a question. 'How's the weather, hey?'

Howzit - meaning how are you? The expression doesn't need a direct answer, but is more a greeting that is followed by the proper question. As in, 'Howzit, man! How are you?'

Isit - said as a question in response to a statement. Meaning 'really'? or 'is that so?'

Ja - pronounced 'yah'. Means 'yes'.

Jol - a good time.

Just now (now, now) - means anytime within the next 50 years other than right this moment. 'I'll take the trash out just now.'

Kiff - a word used to describe the degree of awesomeness. 'That was a kiff wave, dude.'

Klap - Afrikaans for 'slap'. 'I'm going to klap you!'

Koppie - a small hill. Not a mountain.

Kuier - getting together with friends and having a friendly visit. The word kuier is associated with good times and braais.

Kos - food.

Laduma! - exclaimed at soccer matches for a goal. Means 'he scores!' or more literally, 'he thunders'.

Lapa - the thatched outdoor shelter used for shade from the African sun or to braai underneath when it's storming.

Larny - used to described a rich or smart looking person. Mostly refers to a person, fashion and cars.

Lekker - awesome. 'That was a lekker braai.'

Muti - medicine.

Mzansi - the word South Africans use for 'south'. Meaning, the South of Africa. South Africa is often referred to as Mzansi.

Nogal - directly translated, 'even' but is used in exclamation as in 'after all that was said and done'.

O.B.S. - Old Brown Sherry - the national sherry...

Potjie - a three-legged cast iron pot that is used to cook stews over hot coals. Delicious.

So it has to be Cape City in stead of Cape Town

Lydon

Renaming it to Cape City would be really stupid in many other respects. I can see it largely affecting the actual Cape Town brand. And I'm sure many people would be opposed to the renaming too.

It's like renaming New York to Old York because it isn't new anymore

it is still newer than the city York in the UK. Bad example!

Not as bad as the (costly) idea of renaming a city simply because it's no longer a town

It says Greenpoint stadium 1969. So yes, it makes sense that there were different entrances at that time

Thailand to play South Africa on May 31

Bangkokpost Published: 6/05/2010 at 12:00 AM

Thailand will play a warm-up match with World Cup hosts South Africa in South Africa on May 31, Football Association of Thailand president Worawi Makudi said yesterday.

The match will take place in Johannesburg or in Pretoria, 11 days before South Africa kick off the 2010 finals against Mexico at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

Worawi, who is also a Fifa executive, said South Africa invited Thailand to play a warm-up game there because he is close to their coach Carlos Alberto Perreira of Brazil.

He said he had known the Brazilian since he coached Saudi Arabia more than 10 years ago before he took Brazil to their fourth world title in the US in 1994.

"It will be South Africa's last warm-up match before the World Cup kicks off," Worawi said.

Seems the poll has changed in recent weeks. Johannesburg and Cape Town are now neck and neck at 50 votes each for "city most excited to see in 2010." Durban comes in second at 22 votes. 31 people want to see it all! :)
