City plans to move book fair to south Tehran in three years

TEHRAN, May 17 (MNA) -- The Tehran Municipality recently began the first stage of the construction of the Shahr-e Aftab (Sun City) complex, where it plans to hold the Tehran International Book Fair upon completion, the Persian service of CHN reported on Wednesday.

Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf said that the site is located south of Tehran, near the Behesht Zahra cementary. “The plans for phase one and two are prepared, and an agreement has been signed with the private sector to begin the work. The plan for phase three will start soon,” he explained.

He pointed out that moving the location of the book fair from the Chamran Highway is an important issue in Tehran, adding, “Due to the responsibilities I have had over the past six years, I have been closely involved in the problems caused by the book fair.” He said that the project will probably take three years to complete, noting, “I believe there is no better location for the fair at this point in time. I also think Tehran’s traffic problem during the book fair can be solved but requires accurate preplanning and referral to the views of experts.”

The 19th Tehran International Book Fair was held from May 3 to 13.

Indeed khomeinis grave is enough busy... I've been there, it's like a huge picknick.

There isn't really a choice as to where to build new things, north tehran is out of the question. Topography+Infrastructure of east tehran is not suitable, West Tehran is already busy enough all the way to Karaj. So IMHO this only makes sense. Ofcourse the fact that it is right next to his grave, is not a coincidence. ;)

But with developments such as these Tehran needs one or two PROPER RING roads instead of that Azadegan expressway which is rubbish.

New Tehran fairgrounds construction launched

LONDON, January 22 (IranMania) - The first phase of the new Tehran International Fairgrounds was launched in Aftab City, near the Imam Khomeini Mausoleum, IRNA reported.

The new fairgrounds will be built on 140 hectares, at a cost of about 8,000 bln rials, with the participation of the private sector in two executive phases, ISNA reported.

It will contain 44,000 sq. m. of office space, 36,000 sq. m. of service space, 12,000 sq. m. of storage, parking space for 30,000 cars, a 5-star hotel with 350 rooms and an apartment-hotel with 360 units.

The fairground will be in harmony with Iranian-Islamic architecture.

At the launching ceremony, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf promised that the first phase of fairgrounds, which will include a commercial center, four halls and a section of a hotel, will go on stream during the Ten-Day Dawn ceremony in 2009.

Stating that the new fairgrounds will have a capacity for 300,000 people, Qalibaf said, “The fairgrounds will meet all the exhibition needs of the city for the next 50 years. On the other hand, with the building of an amusement park and a 5-star hotel, it will become a suitable commercial-cultural center.“

The mayor also announced the inauguration of a tunnel simultaneous with the completion of the new fairgrounds.

“Shahr Aftab” Project to Be Broken into 6 Smaller Projects | Tehran Municipality (http://en.tehran.ir/Default.aspx?tabid=5215&ctl=Details&mid=22486&ItemID=104351)

Tehran mayor noted that every session held on Tehran’s problems will be welcomed by municipal officials who are sure to take part in them.

“We will take part in the cabinet sessions on traffic problems, but we hope the results of such sessions will benefit Tehran and its citizens,” he added.
SAMA also quoted Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf as saying that although Shahr Aftab (Sun City) project has not progressed as projected, but the reason was that the private investor has not been able to speed up the project due to its huge financial dimensions which amount to about 2,000 billion tomans.
“Therefore, we have sent a bill to Tehran Islamic City Council to break down this project into six smaller ones, so that, private investors will be more at ease for implementing them,” he added.
