Let's see. Not much to do. I was born in 81. No traffic jams. I remember the small Salam Shopping Center on the Corniche, The Center (Markaz), an indoor amusement park I don't remember on what street, and the beautiful zoo. The best part of it was that almost everyone knew everyone else, and there was respect for the elders. It was and still is a beautiful country.

actually I remeber a pilot once told me back then that Doha used to be one of the most boring night-stops in the old Gulf Air network. I don't know how much of that has changed but from what u guys claim it might have changed alot

hi i am living in saudi arabia and i want to know how was qatar back in the 80's by this i mean how modern was it, saudi arabia has been a modern a country since the 60's and by 80's saudi was the most modern and technology advanced country in the middle east, how different was Qatar?

^^^We have cool projects like Lusail, Al-Khore resort and the Pearl-Qatar. These are huge touristic and residential projects.

What is there to do? Shopping, hanging out with friends, boating, driving, studying, working, watching TV, surfing the internet, investing in the stock market, going to museums, going to the cinema, tracking your car at the racetrack, going to restaurants, going to clubs, (soon hopefully going to an amusement park), etc...
Pretty much a lot to do if you have friends.

^^Qatar is just like any other country on earth. It has cool places and bad places. It could be fun depending on your interests. I personally love Qatar and whenever I'd go whenever I get a break

well we have this roumer that qatar/doha signedup to have the olympics 2016. any way we will have the asian games 2006 this year so its cool..... 2008 bejeng/china 2012 london/united kingdome 2016 doha/qatar

did you know doha is the first city in the arabian zone to take the asian games or eny thing like worledcup and olympics.

It is a shame that modernization in Qatar has stopped sometime in the 70s but it is very promising that they are finally back on track again

Before gas and oil were discovered, Qatar was one of the world's poorest countries - it depended on pearl trading and other minor industries like it.

I meant browse through all the cool new projects and new things which are under construction/or planned and you will see how it changed. You can also visit Q-gallery website.

For example, now we have shopping malls, where in the 80's we didnt. That is just one example. :) :)

Now, however, Qatar is becoming one of the fastest Arabic countries to modernize and industrialize. So good for you.

Whatever dude, where do you get that info from! Shari3 elkahraba is so called because of the electricity shops!! Dont site false info.

Qatar was way more modern than the UAE in the 60's and 70's and that's a fact. I am not saying it New York, but I am saying its MORE modern.

^^ Neither is Qatar, my dad worked in Qatar for a few month and he loved it back in the 80's, dunno whats all the fuss of it not being a modern country, and even if it wasn't, it doesn't mean that the country had nothing, it's a beautiful country.

I do agree with all of you that Sheikh Zayed road does look truly amazing.... but i am just trying to show you here that how Dubai was before and how it looks now...... Doha is going to be like this soon..and better.. wait and see.....

I hate Dubai because it changed... it was once a great place... but it lost its identity.... you guys talk about Doha and how it is ... everyone new everyone... Dubai was like that... it had something special to it.... now it has nothing..... how do u define Dubai.... is it a european country ... middle eastern... Asian... what is it.....??

I agree 100 %. I didnt spend years in Dubai, I was only there for 10 days, but what you wrote is exactly the impression I got of this city, one word comes to mind everytime I think of this place and that is FAKE! I hardly arrived before I wanted to leave again, at that time I came straight from Doha, and the difference were so clear. I love the ppl of Qatar, they have always been so friendly to me, always someone that was ready to help, I then came to Dubai and experienced the totally opposite, rude arrogant selfish ppl. Plastic plastic plastic... God I hate that place :ohno:
Doha is in my opinion already MUCH better than Dubai... not everything in life is about materiale things!

ummm....qatar isnt the richest country in teh world right now...not in terms of GDP per capita, that honor goes to luxemborg. and defi. not in terms of absolute GDP, which is obviously the USA

to the orginal poster of this thread you cant really compare Qatar with saudi, because saudi is ten times bigger if not more then Qatar. I have lived in Riyadh and Riyadh is a huge city with a population of 6 million in 2006, Doha on the other hand is only reached 500,000 now. Riyadh to me is a very well developed city it is like a North American metro city which has every thing from poor areas to very super rich areas. Doha on the other hand is very new and its only in the last few years the city has started to develop. Riyadh already reached the state of being developed in the 70's and 80's while Doha is reaching it now.

I saw many pics of Dubai during 90's and was very impressed with the changes today. There was virtually nothing in Dubai that time except dunes and desert and now ..

I already tryed searching for Doha during 90's but failed to find any. Anybody ? :D

Um I think Qatar took the position of richest country of the world this year with a per capita income of about 80000 dollars. Question,, are you allowed to own stuff in Qatar if you are a foreigner?

And to the saudi making the comment that Saudi was the most modern country back in the days :) Kuch...

Kuwait was ahead 20 years in all middle east countries and was the most developed country in the arab and middle east world, until the iraqi invation kuwait was affected very much and at that time we were buidling the 3rd Tallest Tower in The world and got the title when it was completed in 1995 The Liberation Tower (the needle tower), and conserdered to be the tallest tower in the middle east, we also had the marriot looking titanic ship hotel was burned and destroyed by iraqi invation, and at that time we had the biggest toy store in the middle east TOY R US every one knows it in kuwait and it even got destroyed, to be honest Kuwait is now back on its feet and will take the throne and title which Kuwait deserves to be again the most developed country in the arab world and hopefully in the world, No doubt about it ask your fathers in the 80s what was Kuwait like compared to all GCC countries and the answer is obviously Kuwait was impressive and will be amazing in the future Inshallah.
