Philadelphia. Boston a bit too cold in winter.

There's a lot of different perspectives you could look through when it comes to 'vibrant'. For example, Miami is a very vibrant entertainment center, but not very important as a center of commerce and finance.

But:
Entertainment: Miami
Commerce: Oh gee whiz. Boston or Philadelphia

Miami. But if that doesn't count, Atlantic City, maybe.

Are you guys shooting up that bad heroin thats going around?

Atlantic City? Walkable? Vibrant? Maybe the interior of the Borgatta is vibrant and the boardwalk 3 months out of the year but thats about it.

Center City Philly is light years ahead of A.C. comparing daily vibrancy and walkability. Even weekend nights when AC gets hit pretty good with both NYers and Phillyites, I'd still say there is much more going on in Philly.

Hell No, where is it at? I agree with your cronic, AC is part of Philly but Philly alone is crackin all night long.

Boston, DC, and Philly...in no order since I haven't been to these cities enough to judge...

When I travel, I go to NYC mostly.

What the hell is this? What kind of vote is that? :bash:

Take a stand, the question was which city beside NYC was most vibrant and you basically said NYC :bash: :bash:

How is Miami Gulf Coast? Whats that body of water you see when you stand on Miami Beach?? I think its the Atlantic Ocean but then again I could be wrong :) Miami is by far the most 24/7 of the choices (probably even more than NYC). I mean even the suburban mall near me is open until 5AM (and crowded until like 3 AM too). Boston is more walkable overall and has an infinitly better transit system (not to mention infinitly better universities). The weather is just a matter of personal preference. The winters in Miami are amazingly beautiful but the summers are unbearable. The Fall is great in Boston but the winters are unbearable.

Absolutely Philadelphia with Boston being a very second close due to all the colleges and proximity to Cambridge, MA. Philly stays out later and has better weather than Boston. Miami downtown and South Beach (not a Gulf City) are up there but lack the transit factor. Next in line would
be Washington DC and then Baltimore. Hoboken, NJ is a small city with a lot going on.

Miami

Very walkable especially in areas like Downtown, Brickell, Midtown, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove and Miami Beach. Plus it has great weather year-round, is an important financial capital of Latin America with a lot of Latin American headquarters, the largest concentration of international banks in the U.S., as well as the Port of Miami, the largest cruise port in the world and MIA, which is "the Gateway to the Americas" as they call it.

Plus, Miami has a huge fashion industry scene, with Miami Fashion Week and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Miami, arts scene in the Miami Design Distrct, diversity of people from all over, restaurants for every taste, a ton of clubs, a big TV and movie industry and of course its beautiful beaches. Also, Downtown has the free Metromover elevated people mover trains that takes you around Downtown and Brickell that connects you to Metrorail, Amtrak and Tri-Rail. Miami never sleeps.

A close call between D.C., Philadelphia and Boston. I'm going to go and say Philadelphia because it's been developing faster than the others lately. A lot of stuff going on there. Boston, when I was there, was quite quiet after dark, while Philadelphia felt like Manhattan.

Very true Burlislav. Philadelphia has a bustling nightlife that is post collegiate. Boston's nightlife is heavily influenced by the college crowds.

Don't forget Baltimore though. Both Rolling Stone and Blender did stories this month on the city's underground music and arts scenes. Rolling Stone even called it Best of 2008.

Hedonism makes you hip, frugality makes you smart....or maybe wise would be a better word.

With regard to the question, I've heard good things about Portland, Maine.:)

You just need to know where to go in Boston. Most of the nightlife happens in Cambridge and Allston. The parts of Boston that tourists tend to stick to, like Back Bay, The South End and The North End get very quiet after 11:00pm. Walk down Harvard Ave in Allston or Mass Ave in Cambridge/Somerville and it will be plenty lively.

I change my mind. I would like to include the city of South Beach, Florida. Not Miami so much ( very autocentric) but South Beach. It is in my opinion the most vibrant of east coast citys other than New York.

QuantumX

Just for the record for people who do not live in Florida, Miami Beach is an independent city on a barrier island (along with two other smaller cities - Surfside and Bal Harbour). Miami Beach has three distinct districts divided by zip codes. Everything within the 33139 zip code is officially in South Beach. Everything within the 33140 zip code is considered Mid Beach, and everything that falls within the 33141 zip code is North Beach. Three major causeways connect Miami Beach to Miami on the mainland. :)

refer to the original question.
"What do you think is the most vibrant (day and night),walkable east coast city with good mass transit and nice weather (excluding nyc)."

Philadelphia is a lot more vibrant than South Beach and has good mass transit (subways, light rail, etc.). Miami has the weather but it is a party town, not many intellects, not many bookstores. Lots of good bodied partiers.

I don't know if there really is a perception out there with many people that South Beach is in Miami. I think it is more of semantic issue. People say Miami's South Beach because it is too awkward to say Miami Beach's South Beach.

Well, that is nice to hear coming from somebody from Chicago. There is a great high-altitude aerial photograph that I have in my files that I think somebody copied off Flickr that shows Miami and Miami Beach in relation to each other. Downtown Miami and South Beach are well-delineated by their density, so you can see exactly how the area is layed out and how the two cities are connected by causeways. I don't have the ability to upload pics unto the website, but I will be glad to email it to anybody who PMs me. :)

These days though, I think the locals prefer Brickell Village in the Brickell Financial District of Miami. It hasn't caught on as much with tourists yet in the way that South Beach, and I always meet interesting, intellectually stimulating people when I go out to eat or drink in Brickell Village. :)

This should be a truth poll and not an opinion poll. Philadelphia is definitely the most vibrant city on the east coast after New York in terms of streetlife, subways, restauraunts, nightlife and exciting things to do. C'mon the population surpasses that of every other city on the east coast and has the 3rd largest downtown population in the US. The fact is it's Philadelphia whether you like it or not. Miami is small beans compared to Philly. Other than South Beach there is not much else in terms of 24/7 foot life besides random pockets of coconut grove, downtown and the design district. Hoboken rivals South Beach. Boston and DC are much smaller cities than Philadelphia but do have a nice vibrancy despite their size.

I live in South Florida now and believe me I miss Philly's vibrancy!
