Well, for me the spire was something that made this project truly outstanding. Without the spire MCT looks unfinished, it's just... Try to imagine Empire State Building without its spire: the beauty is still there, but the shape lacks a final touch. This is the kind of feeling I have about MCT now :ohno:

The whole plot is rather small compared to the city's territory. So we get just a handful of towers, very close to one another and it gives the feeling of a very small yet very tall part of the city. I don't think it is a skyline indeed. In terms of Moscow it looks a bit like the Taipei 101 in Taipei. Hope you understand what I mean.

To me still La Defense is a more harmonious, various and interesting skyline though I know well towers there are much lower.

Moscow city would have better have more slimmer towers on the same footprint, it would have made a larger impression.

In the late 1990ies I was amased to find in the very heart of Washington DC, few hundred meters West from central station, an half demolished district of victorian style abandonned buildings with the same broken glass at the windows and to find them again unchanged 7 years later... The same with an entire district of houses at a metro station West of the natural history museum in Chicago ! :)

So the average height of 15 storeys found in the suburb of Moscow is similar to the height of the average buildings in NYC outside the towers of course ! In Paris intra muros it's only 6 storeys because of the local rule of maximum height since the 25 m of the reign of Louis XVI..., then 31 to 37 m, except from 1961-1974, and until 2010... when tiny areas of 50 to 180 m were allowed (1) ! This difference of about 10 storeys of the general velum of both cities even explains why the impression from the higher visitors platform of the Eiffel tower is rather similar to the one from the Empire State building.

I have the same opinion. Moscow skyline doesnt look as cool as it should, the density and amount of high-rises isnt still able to change the situation. I do like the IBC cluster, but its small yet. Although, it reminds me of the business center of Shanghai (sorry, Night, i dont remember its name), lots of high-rises and a few gorgeous towers in between. Moscow's is less "futuristic" (i remember you wrote it felt like in future when you were in China on new year holidays), but the conceptions are alike, to my mind. :)

In Shanghai, I think, you're talking about Lujiazui, but it is completely different, being at least 10 times as much. I even can't say that Moscow City IBD is a skyline. It's just a handful of towers.

In Shanghai, there are more than 30 towers over 200 - 250 m in Lujiazui only, other higrises and skyscrapers being spread throughout in the city.

I think if we talk about Moscow skyline, we can't talk about MIBD yet. This is not a skyline. The skyline would be something in the post # 2029, mostly on the second picture.

La Defense is nice from... far :). Above all from the South, because despite its pear... shape plan, virtually all the towers miraculously follow a rectangular grid. And the East view is enhanced by the historical axis. But when you approach you notice that there are still some towers of the 1960-70ies which have not been reburbished yet (like the Aurore tower which will fortunately be destroyed soon to build another one and 4 or 5 others) and that french architects like... to add "personal" details which are sometimes too complicated or even avoid to reach true harmony like the external pilars of Atlantique tower painted in white instead of being black as the windows. So from near the feeling of homogeneity is reduced as long as these few towers will not be refurbished.

But let's come back to Moscow :)

First they have to build all towers in IBC ; also there is an Second Project , called IBC 2 with smaller buildings around....when everything is build , we will see...

I'm sorry but that region doesn't look like a skyline at all, the buildings are all commieblocks and all of them are wider than taller. Maybe if they were not shaped like that but like a real "building" i would agree with you.

Hell yes, the beige-coloured highrise in the middle is 400 meters away from my home, I can see it in the window :) It's probably my favorite building in the whole city, just saying. That neighbourhood of Moscow is quite a pleasant and beautiful place, though it - as almost any other district of the city - needs some cleaning from commieblocks, including the one I live in :sleepy: Not gonna happen in, like, 50 years though.

WOW definitly worth visiting ... are the people also kind? Moscow can easily thrive and beat up any expectation on tourism and compete with London, Washington DC or Madrid. It is full of history and I am sure there is something fun for anybody.

For me personally, the most famous buildings, the museums and the historical sights and flavours of the city are the most important and NOT TO FORGET the Bolsjoy Theater! I guess visiting Moscow and attending one of the concerts like that of Tchaikowsky will be "IT". :)

In the Moscow subway system is good if you're a tourist, it makes sense to move on it. Only 1 dollar, and skate as you want:) But there is a minus, as a huge number of people at rush hour.

With regard to crime, if you have a normal, European appearance - will be no problems. In general, in Russia there is no particular problem with racism, Caucasians do not like because of their behavior.

If what we see above the Y of Mercury on top right of the boards are the new vertical iron bars of level 70, then that means that the 301.60 m of City of Capitals tower were perhaps... reached on January 17 without noticing it !!

Have you noticed too that level 67 (just below the recently risen boards) is higher than those below it, what means that the heights' diagram (saying that they are ALL 3,7 m high) is not totally exact ! I'm just wondering if it rises or reduces the tower a little bit or if they just compensate each other...

Even -35° C is not a problem. Closed space covered by special cloth, some heaters and we have positive temperature inside.

the highest tower in Europe on January 17 2012 (but don't know for the next 5 m ! :))

and as well that... VitMos won the bottle of vodka :)

PS : On your former posted diagram, level 70 had 305,62 m instead of your announced 303,20 m. I suppose that it is due to the changes on the construction of the last real levels (like on the hight of level 67 and the shape of the top) that we can notice from this diagram (cf. p. 100).

Perhaps because of the cold, and perhaps technical difficulties.

Certainly not because of money, the campaign is building a building - are growing stronger importer of cigarettes in Russia.

This happened before when they moved onto this final narrow bit, then suddenly boom it was up 3 floors in a week or two.

Apparently it's true that the project is slightly changed, and it will be higher than originally expected.

For example today was supposed to have started last bevel, and judging from the fixture, it starts somewhere above.

If they add 6 more floors to the original project, the tower will be as good as crap. the proportions will be ruined, the silhouette will be completely tasteless. the secret was to keep the golden ratio between each step, now they (tasteless nouveu riches) ruin the architect's view, they want to get the taller tower and they don't care about the taste, but this building is visible from anywhere in Moscow. How it's possible the City Hall allows this to happen? Ah, I get it, they bribed the cityhall, it's how the business is done in Russia.

I love how slim MCT looks here with the verticle elements of the cladding, it's gonna be incredible when finished. Also loving City of Capitals, still my favourite Skyscrapers in the world right now. Altogether Moscow has a seriously futuristic cluster there, love it!

You see they are working on the 8th floor, which is right before they start working on the narrow pointy segment( which is my theory why it is taking foooooor ever)

When I first heard that they were starting another setback, I was sooo excited (because I thought they were starting another level on floors) but then I saw that it just on the " special cladding" so I was like -.-

The photos of 9 and 10 March below, compared with the 3 above show that on 10 March the last half level visible below the boards was the #69 and that the double level 70 had not yet received its roof at 306.30 m (or 307.60 m : mr. MyXiN is not clear about this on pages 106 and 108 of this thread).
The 3 photos above seems to show that it is now completed and level #71 on the verge to begin, since the 1st and 3rd of this 3 photos above show that the boards have been risen to the same upper level on March 17. Consequently, the vertical iron bars that we can see above the boards on the left of the March 10 photo correspond now exactly to the concrete floor that we can see through the boards on the photo of March 19 above.

I made this mistake because of the forum of the Shard itself. :)
Somebody showed on March 9 a drawing of the finished tower with the very long... last glass panels of 10 m high like on the diagram above [PS : this diagram and its post which were
just above have been suppressed while I was answering !] but several... others denied it... (see the photos below) and showed a drawing were the last panel was about the same height
than the 7 superposed metallic "squares" composing the structure of the pinacles put on March 17 (8 lenghts in total).
So, as somebody said on Wikipedia that the Shard had reached the level of MCT and since I couldn't find the precised actual height of Shard on its forum... for this day..., I considered
309(1)-285 = 24/8 = 3 m for the last panel and consequently 3 x 7 = 21 + 285 = 306 m for the tower height on March 17 !!
(1) height on their posts.
Now if you say that the last panels will be the long ones of 10 m (rather dangerous in case of storm !), the Shard has indeed never reached the level of MCT.
In the other case, if the last Shard glass panel is indeed 3 m high, as I first calculated, the Shard with 306 m on March 17, 2012 didn't reached neither MCT with already 306.30... m on February 28.

MCT became definitely the highest tower in Europe on January 17, 2012 and remained it
until today March 22, 2012 when, with 310,80 m, it finally surpassed the final futur height of the Shard (309 m or? 310 m?).

Yes. If the person who said on Wikipedia that the Shard had reached the same level than MCT (about 306 m) made the same calculation than me, but more probably with the modified drawing.

Given than the higher they are, the longer they strangely take to be built, although they become smaller and smaller... ;
Given that the construction of a level varied between 6 days (#58) and... 66 days (#67) and the last 4 levels took an average time of 23 days each ;
Given that these differences of time are incomprehensible since they didn't correspond to the beginning or end of a bias and didn't seem to be concerned by the low temperatures ;
Given that the last levels will really get smaller and really smaller and should "normally" take less time, nevertheless ;
Given the average speed of the wind in spring ;

Pretty much - it's 306m to the top of the steelwork, but the glass facade goes slightly higher, finishing at 309m, which is the Shard's official AGL height (above ground level). Then as Vito Corleone says, it's just over 310m above sea level, but the official height is 309m.

^^ I am going to try to get a more detailed drawing of the top of The Shard. I believe you are correct in saying that the highest piece of glass goes a bit beyond 306m above ground level.

in any way MCT is ~311-312m at the moment, so shard will never overtake it.

Well, because the whole cluster is not within easily walkable distance from popular tourist spots like Kremlin, you may walk all day around Moscow's historical downtown and never notice any modern skyscrapers if you stay at ground level. So most people come to IBC on purpose, and I believe it's the whole cluster that works as attention grabber, not any single tower.

On a sunny sunset MCT certainly stands from the crowd though.

I see this tower is underestimated in Russia. Maybe because of widespread advertising campaigne of another IBC building — Federation tower, which is much more popular.

Absolutely amazing tower. Moscow can be proud of this one. One of the best designs out there if you ask me. A phenomenal futuristic feeling to it. And the cool thing is, it looks Russian too, hehe. Reminds me of the Soviet Union in Red Alert 2 haha, it has this fierceness and strength as well rigidness to it, in a good way.
