Nice tower, but UGH! This is all way too cramped up! How can this building possibly be valorized if you have the visual covered from virtually every direction? You could only see one perspective of it, and only provided you are on very particular spots. I wish they would pull the tower from its ghetto and move it to Moscow City 2, or three, or anywhere it can breath. Generally speaking, I understand everyone wants to be close to the Federation Tower and the river Moscow, but maybe if the city was more spread out it would look better. Hope they rethink the plot assignment plan...

the plan has been approved in 1994. i hardly doubt it will be reviewed when all project around the core already on their ways. it's not really cramped up. looking from sparrow, winged and bow hills it will perfect connection between CF and City Hall. it will be very situable within skyline.

big city will have more skyscrapers i'm sure, so don't worry;)

btw, 332 m seems without spire and by the cone of roof. spire catch somewhere 400m i think.

oh come on!!!! Arent buildings in Hong Kong, Shanghai and New York valorized??? And doesnt those cities have the best skylines???

What do you preffer, these three cities or Taiwan, with a 500 meters tower in the middle of nowhere, just like you wanted this Russian tower??

A tall tower must help compose a skyline, and this is what will happen in Moscow with all these huge towers close to each other!

Excellent tower! Interesting to notice that the majority of the big projects are happening in countries considered to be "third world" like russia and china. While the western city's skyline are ageing everyday with only a few projects happening. The third world is coming back!

Well, as for Shanghai, as somebody already pointed out in the SWFC forum, there's lots of space between towers in Pudong. Speaking of Hong Kong and NY, maybe there's (there was) less choice than in Moscow as for the available places to put supertalls. Anyway I didn't mean the Mercury tower should have been placed FAR away from the other ones, I was just wondering if its peculiar shape wouldn't be better valorized if its side perspectives were free from obstructions (remember it's sided by a HUGE and blocky one). But nonetheless, I'm sure the district, in the end, will look great. Every planned building is, in its own way, a masterpiece.

I was just wondering if its peculiar shape wouldn't be better valorized if its side perspectives were free from obstructions (remember it's sided by a HUGE and blocky one). This HUGE one is the city hall. The other one (at the opposite side ) is the tallest tower so far (Federation ). The Mercury tower reminds me a banner. If it is illuminated with 3 colores it will definitely look like a Russian flag. In this case this is a good place for it :) - between the Moscow city hall and the highest tower Federation.

INTERVIEW-US architect designs Moscow's first eco-building

MOSCOW, June 29 (Reuters Life!) - It took a New York architect to design the first environmentally friendly building in the capital of Russia, a country swamped with energy resources and the world's third-largest polluter.

Harvard-educated Frank Williams is building the 70-storey Mercury City Tower as part of Moscow's most ambitious construction project -- a new business complex Moskva City.

"Moscow's oil and natural gas make it seem, right now, that it would be respectful to do a sustainable building," Williams told Reuters. "It's quite good when you are blessed with such natural resources, to also conserve them."

Williams has designed the 1,246 feet (380 metres) tower to use less water and electricity. One of his ideas is to melt the snow gathered on the building's sloping levels and to let it trickle down into special containers.

A tenth of the construction material will come from a 300 miles (483 km) radius to cut pollution by transport, and all but a quarter of the inside spaces will receive daylight. There will also be room for storing recyclable material.

TAMING THE ENVIRONMENT

Just as Williams is working to lessen the impact of the colossal structure on the environment, he has to make sure the environment in its turn does not damage the building.

"The wind is more powerful than anything on a large building -- more than an earthquake," he said, adding that on a normal day the skyscraper will move eight to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm) in each direction. "If it doesn't move it cracks."

The white-haired architect, who has designed skyscrapers across the world, says "a building this large and this tall" has to be built in a wind tunnel to minimise the impact of wind.

"We get information on the 200-year history of wind in Moscow and we put all this into our computers."

Builders then install mass dampers -- large heavy blocks -- at the top of the building to control its movement.

"When the wind is blowing on one side of the building, this mass damper is computerised to move in the opposite direction to slow the movement down so that you don't perceive it."

In places where the wind presses the hardest on the skyscraper's surface, builders will also use stronger glass.

Moscow's soft soil is another headache for Williams.

"Moscow has all these rivers that it tends to make the soil not so strong," he said.

Caissons are the answer: "These are these very long tubes of steel and concrete that go down into the soil to anchor your building."

MOSCOW ROOFS

For Williams, who talks about architecture more in terms of an art form than an engineering feat, the appearance of his building is no less important than its technical specifications.

A computer model on www.archfwa.com shows a skyscraper composed of four sloping levels and topped with a spire. The three bottom levels have the shape of steps and are covered by a sheet of glass so that they contain triangular spaces akin to loft apartments.

"I have designed this to have a kind of context with Moscow. See, when you walk around Moscow because of the snow loads, most of the older buildings...have sloped roofs," Williams said.

This design is also behind some of the tower's "green" features: "In those sloped roofs you have skylights, and these are going to be vertical winter gardens."

At the same time, Williams wanted to incorporate into the building a reference to Russian constructivism by giving it a "very strong vertical thrust".

The New Yorker says that in his hometown, demand for sustainable buildings is rising fast. But by designing Moscow's Mercury City Tower, Williams is not just paying lip service to fashion.

Is he a bit of a tree-hugger?

"Absolutely," the architect replied with a smile -- after asking for an explanation of the humorous nickname for environmentalists.

This is going to be a a great tower, looks like the mat is about 15' thick, and the Duma has mats just as thick, but 4 of them, but being next to this tower, i'm hoping the Duma looks more like 4 towers with a virtually transparent atrium, instead of like one huge block, I would like to see this tower not overpowered by it's neighbor.

It's went on zero in middle april. Now it's over 12 meters tall. 6 meters / month is quite fast for concrete building considering of hard structure of first floors.

No offense, but trolling in not allowed here.

We have started Mercury City Tower Project on 2007 July. Now it`s 2009 July, and during these two years ( not more than 3!!! ), we have casted more than 140 million kilograms (~58000m3) of concrete into it`s place! We have a schedule and a budget. So, if our client gives us unlimited money and unlimited resources, I`m sure that we will complete it very quick, but if you (NMAISTER007) have a little brain, you can understand that it`s impossible. In addition of these, you should consider the negative effect of the economic crisis.

Your current speed is 12 floors a year. It is very slow. Certainly, it is better than zero :)

PS By the way, when you work for 3 years you'll won't have 36 floors built.

Our progress and schedule depends on the amount of money that our client can give us in a month...
As our building rises, it becomes smaller. now the area of one floor is 3500 sqm. but it will be 750 sqm. in the final floor. So this 1 floor/month speed is not real. We can build much faster. We have a capacity of casting 6000 m3 concrete in a month but now we are casting 2000-2500 m3. :):):) Don`t ask me the reasons, I can not tell....

Why do you work 24 hours a day?

Do you think that it`s possible to cast concrete during day time. With such traffic jam, how are you gonna cast so huge amounts of concrete! Every night we are racing with time to complete casting the concrete, because we know that, in day time it`s impossible to finish concreting. For example, we can cast 400 m3 in a night, but we can cast 80 m3 in day time, I hope I could explain it well here. We are already working 24 hours a day, from the beginning! If you can do better, come here and do it! This is not about work force, it`s all about money, do you understand. The more you give, the more you get. We have been working here for more than 6 months without any payment from our client. Many of companies stopped building in the beginning of the crisis, but we continued, and we continued from the money which was in our pocket, not from the money of our client, but now there is no money!!! It`s great money that you can`t see even in your dreams!!!!!!

I think he means that SPEED OF BUILDING depends of payments ONLY, not that payments can stop. Now payments are STABLE going on, so let's be optimists =)
