After four unhappy candidatures for the organization of the world cup of football, Morocco does not despair. It has just announced its will to shelter the World Fair of 2012, an exposure which is held every two years on a universal topic (environment, future of planet, peace…) and in which all the countries take part by holding their stand to with it. It would be a good consolation for the kingdom if it obtained finally profit of cause. In any case, its experiments will have to enable him to better defend its file.

Proof of its determination, this time, Morocco launched out early in the race. The sovereign recently addressed a message to Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika. The royal missive requests “the fraternal support” of Algeria for the candidature of Morocco to organize the World Fair 2012. This message shows that Morocco foresees the future with great hope. Initially, the country is due to the organization of a federator world event. Then, it traces its ambitions within a regional framework (that of grabataire UMA in fact) of peace and - why not shared prosperity. It is after all, a noble ambition in a context where a mondialized cold war seems to isolate the Moslem countries from the rest of the world. To take up its challenge, Morocco highly needs to be constant. Its competitors could be giants: Paris as New York could be put in the race. A pressing request for their population is expressed on this subject. In addition, Bulgaria already announced the color by proposing the town of Plovdiv to accomodate the World Fair of 2012. Like what, the Moroccan bet is not won in advance…

i must agree a little bit with with belgiumguy, the proof is the fifa during the moroccan bid for world cup 2010, but i have to say that this is the rule of the game and you should take it in consideration, perhaps morocco loose to south africa for world cup because of corrucption, but also because he didn't prepare well for its foreign connection , at least he did better than other bids . but still foreign connection and interest , should be among the big priorities in any bid for important evenement

Le Maroc a officiellement déposé, hier (04/07/2006), sa candidature pour abriter, dans la ville de Tanger, l'Exposition internationale 2012, indique un communiqué de la wilaya de Tanger.

''Sur Hautes instructions de S.M. le Roi Mohammed VI, le wali de la région Tanger-Tétouan et président de l'Association Tanger Exposition 2012, Mohamed Hassad, a remis le 28 juin 2006, au secrétariat général du Bureau international des expositions à Paris, la lettre officielle de candidature du Maroc pour abriter, à Tanger, l'Exposition internationale 2012'', indique le communiqué parvenu hier à l'agence MAP.

Le Royaume du Maroc accorde une importance particulière à l'organisation, avec la participation de tous les pays du monde, de cette exposition sur le thème ''Routes du monde. Rencontre des cultures. Pour un monde plus uni'', indique le document.

Ce thème a été choisi pour refléter les différents aspects qui unissent les peuples : commerce, transports, savoir, cultures. Au coeur de tout cela : le bien-être de l'homme, souligne-t-on de même source.

Le thème est fortement lié à l'identité du Maroc en tant que terre d'échanges et de symbiose des cultures et des civilisations. Il symbolise aussi l'identité de la ville de Tanger par sa position géographique à la porte du détroit de Gibraltar, sa vocation historique de ville carrefour et les grands projets d'infrastructures de transport qu'elle développe actuellement.

Dans la lettre de candidature, le Premier ministre, au nom du gouvernement de Sa Majesté le Roi, s'engage à respecter le règlement et les recommandations du Bureau international des expositions, à veiller au traitement égal de tous les participants à l'Expo 2012 et à soutenir la participation des pays en voie de développement, assure le communiqué. Au cas où cette candidature serait retenue, l'Exposition Tanger 2012 ouvrira ses portes le samedi 16 juin 2012 et sera close le dimanche 16 septembre de la même année.

Les différents stands seront bâtis sur une superficie de 25 hectares sur un site de la baie de Tanger, au cœur de la ville, précise-t-on.

La ville de Tanger veut jouer dans la cour des grands. En se portant candidate pour l’accueil de l’Exposition universelle de 2012, elle affiche ses ambitions.

De fait, la ville a officialisé sa demande en déposant son dossier mercredi dernier, à Paris. C’est Mohamed Hassad, wali de la région de Tanger-Tétouan et président de l’Association Tanger Exposition 2012 qui a présenté, au siège du Bureau international des expositions, la lettre de candidature marocaine.


Le thème retenu pour cette édition est celui des “Routes du monde, rencontre des cultures, pour un monde plus uni’’, un thème qui semble taillé à la mesure de Tanger, croisement des civilisations méditerranéennes. Une ville qui abrite aussi un grand chantier, celui du Port Tanger Med, véritable pôle de communication entre Nord et Sud (cf. www.leconomiste.com).

L’exposition est prévue sur un terrain de 25 hectares afin d’acceuillir dans les meilleures conditions les dizaines de pays participant à l’événement.

A noter que le Maroc avec Tanger est le deuxième pays, après la Corée du Sud, à avoir annoncé sa candidature pour l’organisation en 2012 de l’Exposition universelle. D’autres villes sont attendues dans la course. On parle de Paris, mais la capitale française n’a pas encore formulé officiellement sa demande
Pour tenir le challenge, le Maroc doit mobiliser toutes ses énergies et moyens pour ficeler un «dossier en béton».

La ville a déjà entamé un important programme de restructuration. Plus de 700 millions de DH seront affectés à l’embellissement et à la remise à niveau de la ville et de ses artères. Le programme qui se veut ambitieux s’étale sur 5 ans et devrait permettre une redynamisation profonde de la ville, avec à la clé, une amélioration du cadre de vie des citoyens.

Vitrine de luxe

L’Exposition universelle est perçue comme une excellente vitrine pour la ville et le pays qui l’accueillent. Les expositions précédentes, comme celle d’Aïchi au Japon, en 2005, ont été des réussites financières, vu l’engagement de grandes firmes industrielles derrière le projet.

Lors de cette édition, plus de 22 millions de personnes ont visité les différents pavillons qui s’étalaient sur 173 hectares de superficie.

D’autres villes ont connu des changements radicaux après le passage de l’Expo. Tel est le cas de Séville, en Espagne. Le succès de cette expo de 1992 à profité d’abord aux habitants de la ville eux-mêmes: réaménagement des rives du Guadalquivir et la présence de pavillons permanents de haute qualité architecturale en sont les plus remarquables.

A noter que la première édition date de 1851 à Londres. Organisée sous le thème des exploits techniques et industriels elle avait réussi à drainer pas moins de 6 millions de visiteurs.

Forte d'une dynamique de développement sans précédent et d'une croissance à deux chiffres dans différents secteurs, Tanger a désormais acquis de l'assurance et affiche ses grandes ambitions en se portant candidate à l'une des plus grandes et prestigieuses manifestations internationales: l'Exposition universelle 2012.

La candidature de la ville du détroit, déposée officiellement, sur hautes instructions de SM le Roi Mohammed VI, mercredi dernier auprès du Bureau International des expositions (BIE) à Paris, fera date dans le ''succes story'' de la ville et sa région.

Une région qui a pris en main sa destinée et se donne les moyens de l'ambition de s'ériger en pôle économique majeur du Royaume et en plate-forme d'excellence pour un arrimage à l'espace européen et une ouverture réussie sur l'économie internationale.

Par le lancement du grand projet Tanger-Med, une gigantesque infrastructure portuaire et de zones franches, la région de Tanger sortit de sa torpeur et prit conscience de son immense potentiel de développement. Sa proximité avec le marché européen, sa position stratégique sur le détroit à la croisée des grandes lignes du trafic maritime international, offrent à la région l'opportunité de se positionner avantageusement dans l'économie globalisée.

Depuis le lancement de ce gigantesque chantier, la région entama avec fougue des efforts tout azimuts pour la mise à niveau de son territoire grâce à des budgets se chiffrant à des milliards de dh pour étoffer ses infrastructures routières (autoroutes et voie ferrée) et réhabiliter ses espaces urbains. La cité émergeante est désormais en vitesse de croisière pour être au rendez-vous de ses grandes ambitions.

Le choix porté sur la ville de Tanger pour abriter la grande manifestation, ''Expo-2012'' se justifie amplement par le fait que la ville du détroit illustre brillamment l'image d'un Maroc moderne et résolument ouvert sur le monde.

De par son histoire, la ville de Tanger a été profondément imprégnée d'une culture cosmopolite. Des grandes civilisations méditerranéennes qui se sont succédées sur la péninsule tangitaine depuis la nuit des temps jusqu'à son statut de ville internationale au début du 20-eme siècle, la ville du détroit s'est forgée un esprit cosmopolite qui sied parfaitement à cette grande rencontre internationale.

En témoigne le thème retenu pour la candidature de Tanger ''Routes du Monde, rencontres des cultures. Pour un monde plus uni''. Le document indique que le dossier de candidature propose une superficie de 25 ha sur la splendide baie de Tanger pour l'installation et la construction des stands de cette manifestation de trois mois.

Les enjeux économiques de l'organisation d'une exposition universelle sont de taille et la candidature du Maroc, qui intervient après celle de la Corée du Sud, sera sûrement suivie par d'autres postulants comme l'affirme le BIE.

Forte de ses nombreux atouts, notamment sa situation de passerelle entre deux continents, la ville de Tanger dispose d'amples chances pour abriter cet événement d'envergure mondiale.

Une association "Tanger Exposition 2012" a été déjà créée pour mener le challenge. Aucun effort ne sera ménagé pour s'assurer l'organisation de l'Expo-2012. La ville du détroit aura beaucoup à y gagner, compte tenu de l'effet de transformation majeure qu'opère une telle manifestation sur les villes qui l'ont abritée.

Paris n'aurait jamais eu son emblématique Tour Eiffel sans l'expo universelle de 1889. Une manifestation qui a eu également le mérite de consacrer l'aura internationale de plusieurs villes et métropoles à travers le monde.

L'exemple du voisin ibérique est fortement édifiant avec l'exposition universelle organisée en 1992 à Séville. En effet, l'Expo-92 a apporté une surprenante réforme urbanistique à Séville. La construction d'un nouvel aéroport international, l'arrivée du TGV, un dense réseau autoroutier et le réaménagement des rives de Guadalquivir avec la construction de huit ponts, sont autant de réalisations exécutées dans la foulée des préparatifs pour le grand événement.

La ville a également hérité de pavillons de haute qualité architecturale sur le site de 215 ha qui a abrité la manifestation. On y trouve notamment un parc thématique ''La Isla Magica'', un parc technologique, des écoles universitaires et des merveilles de l'architecture moderne comme le pavillon de l'Union Européenne ou celui du Canada.

Avec la participation d'une centaine de pays et plus de 40 millions de visiteurs, l'Expo-92 aura notamment permis à Séville de s'ériger en grande destination touristique avec des performances spectaculaires.

Si la voix de la raison l'emporte, c'est au tour du continent africain d'abriter ce grand rendez-vous des nations, et la ville de Tanger est la plus indiquée et la mieux lotie pour avoir un tel honneur.

Mohammed Hassad, wali de la région Tanger- Tétouan,
M. Hassad Wali de Tanger-Tétouana appelé jeudi à la mobilisation générale pour le soutien de la candidature de la ville de Tanger à l'organisationde l'Expo 2012, lors d'une conférence de presse organisée dans sa résidence.

Juste une semaine après avoir déposé, au nom du gouvernement marocain, le dossier de candidature de la ville de Tanger pour l'organisation de l'Expo 2012, Mohammed Hassad a convié jeudi dernier la presse tangéroise en son domicile pour apporter des éclaircissements quant à cette candidature, mais aussi pour recueillir les avis des journalistes présents sur la manière dont la mobilisation autour de cette candidature pourrait être faite.



Mohammed Hassad a expliqué en introduction les différentes étapes que devra franchir la candidature tangéroise. Ainsi en décembre prochain, la ville devra déposer un dossier technique de candidature, celui présenté il y a quelques jours n'étant qu'administratif. Ce dossier devra être soumis à l'assemblée générale du Bureau International des Expositions (BIE); la candidaturev fera ensuite l'objet d'une inspection in situ des responsables du BIE qui devront établir un rapport avant qu'un premier vote, en novembre 2007, ne retienne la ville élue pour l'accueil de l'Expo 2012. Toutefois, ce vote ne pourra être considéré définitif qu'une fois soumis à un autre vote cette fois-ci confirmatif et définitif de l'assemblée générale du BIE.

Si le délai imparti peut paraître court, le wali Hassad s'est néanmoins montré très confiant et a assuré les représentants de la presse que tout sera mis en oeuvre pour que le dossier tangérois soit le plus compétitif possible et que toutes les chances soient aux côtés de la capitale du détroit conformément aux instructions du souverain.

Ainsi, LCN a pu apprendre qu'au terme de son dernier séjour dans notre ville, et à quelques heures de son départ, le roi Mohammed VI avait reçu le wali Hassad et avait donné ses dernières instructions au sujet de cette candidature.

Par ailleurs, Mohammed Hassad a annoncé la création récente de l'Association Tanger Exposition 2012 qui compte près de 35 membres. Un nombre réduit que Hassad a expliqué par un souci d'efficacité en précisant toutefois que celle-ci bénéficiera de comités de soutien réunissant des élus, des personnalités nationales et internationales, des représentants de la société civile tangéroise ainsi que des Tangérois de la diaspora.

S'agissant de l'absence du maire, Derham Dahmane, lors du dépôt de dossier de candidature de la ville, le wali a déclaré assumer sa part de responsabilité dans cette absence estimant toutefois que cette responsabilité était quelque peu à partager avec le premier élu de la ville qui n'a pas manifesté sa volonté de se joindre à l'expédition, " il m'a affirmé qu'il n'a pas osé le demander"…

Le maire s'est aussi absenté de cette rencontre avec la presse et s'est fait représenter par Mme Salma Taoud.

Le dossier technique de la candidature de la ville de
M. HAssad Wali de Tanger TétouanTanger pour abriter l'exposition internationale 2012 sera fin prêt en décembre prochain, a annoncé Mohamed Hassad, wali de la région Tanger-Tétouan et président de l'association Tanger-Expo-2012.

«Le dossier, qui comprend des informations exhaustives sur l'aménagement du site devant abriter l'exposition (25 ha), la logistique, l'hébergement, les travaux de développement des infrastructures de la ville, le financement et les garanties concernant l'organisation, devra être déposé auprès de l'assemblée générale du Bureau international des expositions (BIE) à Paris courant décembre 2006», a précisé le wali qui s'exprimait lors d'une rencontre avec la presse locale.

« Après une mission d'inspection du BIE qui se rendra sur place pour évaluer le projet et vérifier les éléments du dossier, interviendra, en décembre 2007, la phase décisive du vote de l'assemblée générale de l'organisation pour désigner le pays qui va organiser cette grande manifestation internationale», a-t-il expliqué.

Et de relever que dans le cadre des précautions prévues par le BIE, ce dernier se réserve un vote de confirmation en 2009 en vue de s'assurer du bon déroulement des préparatifs auxquels le pays organisateur s'est engagé.

Jusqu'à présent, deux autres pays (la Corée du Sud et la Pologne) ont postulé pour l'organisation de l'Expo-2012, dont le dernier délai de dépôt de candidature est fixé au 22 novembre prochain.

M. Hassad a dévoilé à cette occasion l'emplacement prévu pour abriter cette manifestation d'envergure universelle. Il s'agit d'un site de 75 ha sur la baie de Tanger.

Concernant la promotion de la candidature de la ville du Détroit, le wali a précisé que l'association fera appel aux services de professionnels de grande compétence. Et d'assurer aussi, à ce sujet, que des contacts de haut niveau ont d'ores et déjà été entrepris auprès de plusieurs pays membres de la BIE pour conforter les chances de la candidature marocaine.

Selon M. Hassad, la candidature de Tanger dispose d'importants atouts et ses chances sont considérables.

« Ce sera la première fois qu'une telle manifestation est organisée sur le continent africain, dans un pays arabe et musulman», a-t-il dit.
La symbolique est forte et le thème choisi pour la candidature de la capitale du nord du Royaume, «Routes du monde, rencontre des cultures. Pour un monde plus uni», est d'une grande actualité pour l'humanité qui aspire à la paix et à une stabilité fondée sur un développement équitable.

Au niveau organisationnel, M. Hassad a annoncé que l'association Tanger-Expo-2012 tiendra son assemblée générale au cours du mois de juillet. «Dans le souci de se doter d'une équipe efficace et réactive, les membres de l'association seront réduits à un nombre restreint», a-t-il relevé. «L'association sera épaulée par des comités de soutien, tant au niveau national qu'international, pour faire la promotion de la candidature de la ville du Détroit», a-t-il ajouté.

Le wali a particulièrement insisté, lors de cette rencontre, sur la mobilisation autour de ce grand projet. «Les responsables locaux, les élus, les différentes composantes de la société civile et la presse devront faire corps et fédérer leurs efforts pour relever ce challenge», a-t-il souligné.

« Si la candidature de Tanger parvient à aboutir, l'histoire de la ville intégrera sans nul doute la distinction»avant et après l'Expo-2012'' ", a-t-il conclu.

Il y a quatorze ans, la ville espagnole de


Tanger Expo 2012Séville avait abrité les activités de l'Exposition universelle à laquelle ont participé les différents pays du monde dont, bien sûr, le Maroc avec un merveilleux pavillon qui existe de nos jours.


Les équipements de base qui ont étoffé la capitale de l'Andalousie étaient, entre autres, des ponts gigantesques sur la grande rivière ou «El Oued El Kebir», des avenues, des places, des lacs, des hyper-marchés et des hôtels qu'il fallait faire harmoniser avec le Forum mondial ou l'Exposition universelle de «Séville 1992».


La ville de Tanger compte bel et bien des potentialités et atouts à même de consolider la candidature du Maroc à l'Expo 2012.

Les grands chantiers socio-économiques et d'équipements de base lancés par Sa Majesté le Roi Mohammed VI viennent en un moment très crucial et par la suite pour assurer le rehaussement de la ville de Tanger à entrer en lice avec les candidats comme la Corée du Sud, la Pologne et même New York pour s'accaparer de ce grand challenge.



Lors d'un point de presse, le wali de la région de Tanger-Tétouan Mohamed Hassad a rappelé que la candidature du Maroc est une affaire de tous les Marocains et que le gouvernement, les ONG, les associations, les entreprises sont directement impliqués et concernés pour ne pas rater cette aubaine qui sera le meilleur «challenge» pour mettre en valeur la crédible action de tout un pays.

Avec la conjugaison de tous les efforts et surtout avec l'abnégation et le sérieux de tout un chacun, la ville de Tanger sera bien placée pour s'octroyer le Forum universel 2012, surtout que toute la région connaît la naissance de projets de grande envergure dont le port «Tanger Méditerranée » qui sera opérationnel en 2007 et qui sont, heureusement, générateurs de plusieurs milliers d'emplois.


Il est certain que le dossier de candidature du Maroc est entre de bonnes mains, surtout comme la haute commission formée de plus de 40 personnes est chargée de la confection du dossier qui sera déposé en temps opportun.

Avec le sérieux, la foi et la crédibilité de tout le peuple marocain, la ville de Tanger ne pourra que s'adjuger cette aubaine sachant, en fin de compte, que le Maroc est au même diapason des pays rivaux et par la suite il est à la hauteur d'organiser cet évènement mondial.

Le maire de Tanger M. Dahman Derham à la veille de la Fête du Trône, est un homme comblé. Alors que S.M. le Roi Mohammed VI a effectué 2 visites ici en un mois, les investisseurs affluent en nombre de Casablanca et de Rabat mais également d’Europe et de la région du Golfe.

En effet, outre Urbas, Renta et Fadesa d’Espagne, émiratis et qataris sont là et ce ne sont que les premiers. Ils sont de plus en plus suivis par des Anglais, et de Casablanca arrivent les groupes dirigés par des entrepreneurs de choc : Chaâbi, Séfrioui, Jamaï et Bensalah.

A la question de savoir si Tanger est prête à accueillir, à “digérer” tous ces investissements massifs, le maire n’a aucun doûte. “Grâce au travail de mise à niveau accompli effectué avec l’équipe municipale, le wali et l’Agence du Nord, Tanger a vite changé et en bien”. Eau, électricité et assainissement avancent, des promoteurs lancent d’un coup des projets de 9000 logements ; cela n’existe nulle part au Maroc”.

A mi-chemin de son mandat, M. Dahman Derham, un homme sage apprécié de ses concitoyens voit quelques-uns de ses rêves se réaliser : Avec lui, avec le wali M. Hassad et avec de nombreux hommes et femmes de qualité sur la ville et sur la région, “Tanger revient en force sur la carte nationale et internationale”.

Le dossier pour l’Expo 2012 illustre cette tendance. Les réunions ont commencé, les contacts avec Shanghaï qui abrite l’édition 2010 sont pris ainsi qu’avec l’équipe de Zaragoza 2008 dont une partie a travaillé sur l’Expo Sévilla 1992.

Cet été, le maire ne prendra pas de congés, sauf peut-être un long week-end un de ces jours ... Il doit veiller au bon déroulement de la saison d’été, jeter un coup d’oeil sur les dossiers de l’Expo 2012. L’ambition et le succès ont aussi leurs servitudes.

Hey guys this is great news, I really wish you good luck... it would be a really good chance not just for Tanger but for all of Morocco too! I don't think any Spanish city will bid for the candidacy, because Zaragoza will hold the World Expo 2008, so I support your candidacy guys!

From a more personal point of view, Tanger is really close to Spain, and it would give me a good excuse to visit Morocco for the first time :)

Le Maroc n'a pas encore finalisé le projet Tanger exposition universelle 2012 contrairement à la Corée du Sud qui a déjà les plans du future site et les constructions qu'on trouvera donc c pour cela que le site n'est pas au point encore.
Le dossier de candidature avec le site retenu et les différentes constructions ne seront pas connus avant le mois de decembre donc faudra patienter pour que le site de Tanger exposition universelle 2012 soit comme celui de la Corée du Sud avec tous les details.

Morocco to apply for Expo 2012 in December






Tangier, Morocco announced that Morocco is going to submit officially its application for hosting Expo 2012 in December 2006 and a series of activities will be launched for the bidding. Morocco is the first Arabic, Islamic and African country that has bid for the Expo.


It is revealed that Tangier is chosen as the bidding city and a 75-hectare lot was designated for Expo use, of which 25 hectares are for the Expo site construction and the rest for catering, transportation and other supporting facilities. A special bidding organization has been set up following the example of China.


So far, South Korea and Poland also announced their bidding for hosting Expo 2012.

The candidature of the town of Tangier for the World Fair of 2012 seems to have taken a watershed during this summer. The last council of government thus decided creation of a dedicated structure (cf www.leconomiste.com). This one, baptized International exhibition, Tangier 2012, will have a double autonomy management finances, even if it is responsible in front of Primature. It will have as a task first to recall the receipts and expenditure related with the organization of this event. This new entity will come to support the association Exposition 2012, whose creation had been announced last June by its president, the wali Mohamed Hassad. Located on the edges of Oder, it does not count less than 12 islands and 112 small islands, thus deserving its nickname of Venice Polish. One of its attractions remains the panorama of Raclawice, an enormous rotunda of 120 m with frescos of the battle of the same name, one of the first Polish victories vis-a-vis to the Russian armies. Just like Yeosu, the Korean candidate, it has an important presence on the Fabric, with a dedicated site, gathering the essence of information on the city in three languages. An example to be followed for the town of Tangier.

Chili soutien la ville de Tanger

L'ambassadeur du Chili au Maroc, Mme. Marcia Covarrubias, a fait part du soutien de son pays à la candidature de la ville de Tanger pour l'organisation de la prestigieuse manifestation internationale ''Expo-2012''.

Me. Covarrubias a exprimé l'appui de son pays en faveur de la candidature marocaine lors d'une rencontre, en début de semaine, avec les responsables de la chambre de commerce, d'industrie et de services (CCIS) de la wilaya de Tanger, indiquent les responsables de l'établissement.

Lors de cet entretien, Mme Covarrubias a relevé la grande dynamique économique que connaît la ville du détroit, assurant que les opportunités d'affaires dans cette région prometteuse ne manqueraient pas d'intéresser les opérateurs économiques et hommes d'affaires chiliens.
Dans la perspective de tisser des liens de coopération entre les deux pays, l'ambassadeur chilienne a fait savoir qu'une délégation d'hommes d'affaires marocains se rendra au Chili en mars et avril prochains.

Les responsables de la chambre ont saisi l'occasion de cette rencontre pour présenter à Mme Covarrubias, les grandes perspectives de développement de la région sous l'impulsion de son projet phare de zones franches et de plate-forme portuaire ''Tanger Med''.

Ils ont aussi insisté sur les mesures attractives pour l'investissement étranger à Tanger. Il s'agit notamment des avantages fiscaux de la ville de Tanger (réduction de 50 pc sur l'IS, la patente et l'IGR) qui sont cumulables avec les mesures incitatives prévues dans la charte de l'investissement qui s'applique à l'ensemble du territoire national.

D'une population de 16 millions d'habitants, le PIB du Chili s'élève à 115 milliards dollars en 2005. Ce pays, qui connaît le taux de chômage le moins élevé du continent latino-américain (8,5 pc), prévoit une croissance de 5,25 à 6,25 en 2007.

Le pays a réalisé en 2005 des exportations de 40,5 milliards dollars avec un excédent budgétaire de 4,8 pc (18,8 milliards dollars).

Expo 2012 : Tanger présente son dossier

Le dossier de candidature de Tanger à l'exposition internationale 2012 a été présenté, mardi à Rabat, aux chefs des missions diplomatiques étrangères accréditées au Maroc.


Présidant cette rencontre, le ministre délégué aux Affaires étrangères et à la Coopération, M. Taib Fassi Fihri a souligné l'importance qu'accorde le Maroc à cette candidature, placée sous le thème "Routes du monde, rencontre des cultures. Pour un monde plus uni", faisant état de la détermination de toutes les composantes de Tanger de voir leur ville abriter cet événement de grande envergure.
Le ministre a affirmé qu'il est temps qu'une telle exposition ait lieu sur une terre africaine, arabe et musulmane, mettant l'accent sur les potentialités et les atouts de Tanger, porte de l Afrique vers l Europe et vis-versa et carrefour de cultures et de civilisations.

De son côté, le wali de la région Tanger-Tétouan et Président de l'Association Tanger 2012, M. Mohamed Hassad a fait un exposé dans lequel il a mis en relief les chantiers en cours dans la ville du Détroit, notamment le Port Tanger-Med, les infrastructures autoroutières et ferroviaires et l'aménagement progressif de zones franches et industrielles, ainsi que les projets de mise à niveau urbaine portant sur la requalification urbaine, la préservation du patrimoine et la mise à niveau des quartiers sous-équipés.

M. Hassad a souligné que le thème retenu pour cette manifestation est "universel et diversifié" et constitue un champ fécond d'interventions et d'intérêt pour tous les pays, les organisations internationales, les ONG internationales et les entreprises. Il s'agit également d'un thème en symbiose avec les valeurs du Maroc (hospitalité, ouverture, dialogue, échange, développement...) et une occasion pour la sensibilisation aux valeurs universelles du respect de l'Autre, du partage et du dialogue entre les cultures.
Il s'est également attardé sur les potentialités touristiques de Tanger qui dispose déjà d'une infrastructure hôtelière de 1.300 lits, soulignant qu'en 2012 Tanger et sa région auront une capacité d'environ 40.000 lits dépassant ainsi largement les besoins en hébergement liés à l'Expo.

Evoquant les mesures particulières qui seront prises à cette occasion, M. Hassad a fait savoir que de nouvelles infrastructures de desserte sont programmées pour renforcer les liens de communication au sein de la ville.

L'Expo-2012 représente de grands enjeux pour le développement de la ville du Détroit. Selon des prévisions établies, la manifestation devrait attirer près de 6 millions de visiteurs durant les trois mois de l'exposition (16 juin-16 septembre) avec une affluence quotidienne qui devra varier entre 65.000 et 130.000 visiteurs.
Selon M. Hassad, le plan d'aménagement de l'espace de l'exposition, qui abritera les pavillons de quelque 80 pays, a été conçu de façon originale qui répond aux normes de sécurité.

Etalé sur une superficie de 100 ha, l'espace de l'exposition, conçu en forme circulaire avec ouverture sur la baie de Tanger, sera desservi par cinq portails qui correspondent à 5 sous thèmes: Les routes et les systèmes de transport, les routes humaines et culturelles, les routes commerciales, les routes virtuelles et les routes imaginaires.
Côté financier, les opérations prévues dans le cadre de l'Expo2012 nécessiteront un investissement de l'ordre de 3,5 milliards DH, a indiqué M. Hassad, soulignant que les opérations de reconversion du site de l'Exposition permettront de générer plus de 80 millions d'Euros de bénéfice. Ces bénéficies serviront à la réalisation de nouveaux projets sociaux et culturels pour la ville, a-t-il indiqué.

Il convient de signaler qu'une délégation du bureau international des expositions (BIE), basé à Paris, effectuera une visite à Tanger (30 avril - 4 mai) pour vérifier la viabilité de la candidature de la ville du détroit à organiser la prestigieuse manifestation. Une candidature en concurrence avec celles de la ville Sud-Coréenne Yeosu et de la ville polonaise Wroclaw.
Par la suite, l'assistance a suivi un documentaire sur les potentialités et atouts touristiques de la ville du Détroit et les chantiers en cours de réalisation dans cette ville.

Tanger abritera-t-elle l’exposition universelle 2012 ? La ville du détroit, en tout cas, est officiellement en lice (à côté de New York et Milan entre autres), même si le dépôt des candidatures n’aura lieu qu’en juin. Suite à une lettre de Mohammed VI, l’Algérie (qui détient un vote dans l’organisation internationale des foires et expositions, laquelle choisira la ville gagnante) se déclare prête à soutenir Tanger. Mais le lobbying ne fait que commencer. Le verdict ne devrait être rendu que fin 2007. Si Tanger l’emporte, son urbanisme pourrait en être bouleversé, comme à Séville après 1992… Bonne chance à Tanger et au wali Mohamed Hassad.

Expo 2012 à Tanger, un choix bien mérité

Si Tanger est proposée candidate à l’Expo 2012, ce n’est pas un hasard, mais c’est parce que le choix est bien mérité. Tanger, ville phare à quelques kilomètres de l’Europe a toujours joué le rôle de terre d’accueil et des rencontres internationales. Aujourd’hui la ville du détroit est en plein essor. Sa restructuration est bien avancée. Des chantiers de grande taille y sont ouverts. Une zone franche est opérationnelle depuis quelques années, un port Euro-med en phase de finition, des chaînes hôtelières internationales s’y installent, une infrastructure routière, ferroviaire et aérienne et maritime facilite l’accès de tout genre de trafic. C’est dire que la ville du détroit se refait avec certitude. Les hautes instances du Royaume lui accordent une importance particulière.

L’organisation de cette grande manifestation à Tanger est une opportunité d’or pour un décollage socioéconomique important pour la région en particulier et pour tout le Royaume en général. C’est une occasion pour améliorer le niveau de vie des citoyens par le développement de petites, moyennes et grandes entreprises dans tous les secteurs de prestations et de production et essentiellement dans l’industrie des loisirs, car la ville des ambassadeurs recèle d’innombrable atouts et potentialités.

L’organisation de l’Expo 2012 à Tanger est également une occasion pour la création des économies durables et des économies de niche dans les sites touristiques avoisinant (Chaoun, Larache, Asilah.......). C’est ce qui va favoriser l’épanouissement du tourisme, toutes formes confondues, et en l’occurrence faciliter les échanges culturels et par voie de conséquence donner lieu à la consolidation de l’esprit de tolérance, de la paix et de la cohabitation pacifique au profit des citoyens de la région méditerranéenne particulièrement, et à la faveur de tous les citoyens des deux continents dont Tanger est le carrefour (Europe et Afrique.....).

Programmé à Tanger sous le thème : Rencontres du Monde, Rencontre des cultures, pour un monde plus uni, cette manifestation développera des liens de fraternité, de culture, d’échanges, de coopération, de tolérance et favorisera aussi, à grande échelle, des rapports économiques et commerciaux dans un monde de globalisation, qui est celui d’aujourd’hui.

Car son thème est éclaté en cinq sous thèmes qui ouvrent des perspectives complémentaires de l’idée des routes du monde, Tanger Expo 2012 laisse le champ libre aux exposants du monde pour varier leurs expositions , multiplier les initiatives, permettre la créativité, afin de vanter leur savoir technologique.

Etant en plein chantier de mise à niveau économique et social Tanger est le pôle idéal pour abriter l’Expo 2012, surtout qu’elle jouit de l’appui de Sa Majesté le Roi Mohamed VI, du gouvernement et de toute la société civile.

Terre d’accueil, ville de croisée de cultures et de civilisations, ville des écrivains, des peintres, des poètes et cité des ambassadeurs, Tanger avec toutes ses caractéristiques ne peut que réussir. Ses femmes et ses hommes ont l’habitude de faire de bonnes choses, car très accueillants, hospitaliers et soucieux du développement de leur région dans le bon sens.

Ainsi, Meriem Bensalah, DG d’Holmarcom et ex-présidente du festival de Casablanca, a pour mission d’assurer la coordination des actions sur le plan national. Et c’est Federico Mayor, ex-directeur de l’Unesco qui est chargé du volet international. L’objectif est mettre en place une stratégie de lobbying auprès du BIE (bureau international des expositions).
Selon le comité d’organisation, d’autres grosses pointures, notamment des prix Nobel, sont aussi partenaires de l’opération. Comité qui annonce le lancement, mi-février, d’une vaste campagne de promotion via affichage et presse écrite et audio-visuelle.

Rappelons que le BIE donnera son verdict le 30 avril prochain après avoir étudié toutes les candidatures.

Un comité de soutien international pour Expo Tanger 2012

Les membres fondateurs du Comité de soutien international se sont réunis à Tanger pour montrer leur engagement aux côtés de la candidature de la ville à l’organisation de l’Exposition Internationale de 2012

Tanger (Maroc), le 2 février 2007 - Expo Tanger 2012, le comité de candidature de la ville de Tanger pour l’Exposition Internationale de 2012, a présenté officiellement son Comité de soutien international, réunissant aujourd’hui ses membres fondateurs pour une séance de travail.

A l’invitation de l’association Expo Tanger 2012, les 9 membres fondateurs du Comité de soutien international de l’Expo Tanger 2012, sont venus au Maroc pour témoigner de leur engagement aux côtés de la candidature de Tanger pour l’organisation de l’Exposition Internationale de 2012. Le Comité est présidé par Federico Mayor Zaragoza, Directeur général de l’UNESCO de 1987 à 1999, Fondateur et Président de la Fondation Culture de paix et co-Président du Haut Comité des Nations Unies pour " une Alliance des Civilisations ". Il travaillera en étroite collaboration avec Karim Errouaki, Membre fondateur et Conseiller spécial du président du Comité de soutien international d’Expo Tanger 2012.

Présidents d’honneur :

- Boutros Boutros Ghali, Secrétaire général de l’ONU de 1992 à 1996.

- Michel Rocard, Député européen et premier Ministre de 1988 à 1991.

Mohamed Hassad, Wali de la région de Tanger-Tétouan et Président de l’association Expo Tanger 2012, a présenté en détail le projet marocain à ses invités. Les membres fondateurs du Comité de soutien international ont tous des liens très forts avec Tanger et avec le Maroc. Le Comité de soutien international d’Expo Tanger 2012 comprend à ce jour 9 membres fondateurs. Il a pour mission de porter la voix de la candidature marocaine dans le monde entier. Commentant son engagement, Federico Mayor Zaragoza a déclaré : " Je suis très honoré de présider le Comité de soutien international d’Expo Tanger 2012. La qualité technique du projet de Tanger démontre la capacité du Maroc à organiser l’Exposition Internationale de 2012. Il s’inscrit parfaitement dans le mouvement de modernisation de la ville, de la région et du pays dans son ensemble. Je suis convaincu que la candidature de Tanger servira de modèle pour tous les pays émergents qui souhaiteraient à l’avenir se porter candidats et suivre la voie du développement humain et durable. L’accueil de l’Exposition Internationale permettra de marquer la renaissance de la ville des valeurs d’universalité et de mixité culturelle que Tanger partage avec le BIE ".

Tanger vit actuellement l’effervescence des préparatifs en vue de la visite à Tanger de la commission d’inspection du BIE, qui aura lieu du 30 avril au 4 mai 2007. Le vote qui désignera la ville hôte pour l’Exposition Internationale de 2012 se déroulera à Paris en décembre 2007.

L’Exposition Internationale est une manifestation à caractère non commercial, organisée par le Bureau International des Expositions dans l’intervalle de deux Expositions Universelles qui se tiennent tous les 5 ans. L'Afrique mérite, à travers la candidature de Tanger, d'abriter l'Expo 2012 (personnalités internationales)

Rabat, 03/02/07 - L'ancien Directeur général de l'UNESCO, M. Federico Mayor, et l'ex Premier ministre français, M. Michel Rocard, ont affirmé, vendredi, que l'Afrique mérite, à travers la candidature de Tanger, d'abriter l'Exposition internationale 2012.

M. Mayor, qui était l'invité du journal du soir de la chaîne de télévision "Midi 1 Sat", a fait observer que cette grande manifestation n'a jamais été organisée sur le sol africain et qu'"il est temps de placer Tanger, à travers cette exposition, en tant que point de repère à côté d'autres grandes villes dans le monde".

"Tanger possède une grande capacité de séduction et tous les atouts lui permettent de recevoir les quelque 6 millions de visiteurs prévus pour cette exposition", a ajouté M. Mayor qui préside le comité international de soutien de la candidature de Tanger à l'Expo 2012.

Après avoir rappelé le haut niveau des personnalités membres dudit comité notamment l'ancien Secrétaire général des Nations-unies, M. Boutros Ghali, l'ancien Premier ministre français, Michel Rocard, et le prix Nobel d'économie, Robert Mundel, M. Mayor a estimé qu'il est nécessaire de favoriser la candidature de Tanger pour des raisons d'équilibre, soulignant notamment que la Corée du Sud (dont la ville de Yeosu est également en lice pour abriter l'Expo 2012) avait déjà eu l'occasion d'organiser les jeux olympiques (1988) et une exposition internationale (1993).

Dans un entretien accordé à la même chaîne, M. Rocard a, pour sa part, indiqué que la candidature de Tanger est une occasion pour mener un combat pour "le rattrapage de l'Afrique qui est le plus en retard en matière de développement".

"Il s'agit également d'une occasion pour donner un coup d'accélérateur au développement surtout au nord du Maroc "a-t-il précisé, ajoutant que c'est "un grand plaisir" pour lui de "contribuer à cette tâche".

Evoquant les "points forts" de la candidature de Tanger, l'ancien Premier ministre français cite notamment la situation géographique stratégique du Maroc qui est, a-t-il fait noter, "l'un des pays d'Afrique, dont le développement est le plus remarquable".

M. Rocard a d'autre part qualifié la candidature de Tanger de "superbe dossier" pour le Maroc où il y a, a-t-il estimé, "une vitalité qui n'existe nul part ailleurs en Afrique notamment en matière intellectuelle et dans les secteurs d'artisanat et d'architecture locale".

"Cette dimension de l'identité culturelle historique est une coloration du dossier superbe de la candidature du Maroc", a-t-il noté.

Le prochain concours du plus beau balcon n’aura lieu ni à Paris, ni à Venise ni à Los Aangeles, mais bien à Tanger. L’idée -originale, il faut l’avouer- a pour but de soutenir la candidature de la ville du détroit pour l’organisation de l’exposition universelle 2012. “Nous souhaitons montrer au comité d’inspection, qui arrivera au Maroc début mai, que la population tangéroise est entièrement mobilisée derrière cette campagne”, explique Othmane Mernissi, président du bureau tangérois de la fédération du BTP. Les trois heureux balcons, qui seront choisis en mai prochain, devront se partager la coquette somme de 100 000 dirhams. De quoi retaper tout l’appartement…

La France et le Portugal vient d'annoncer leur soutien à la candidature de Tanger pour l'organisation de l'Exposition internationale 2012. C'est l'ambassadeur du portugal, Joao Rosa-La, en déplacement au Maroc, et le porte-parole du ministère français des Affaires étrangères, Jean-Baptiste Mattéi qui l'ont annoncé officiellement aujourd'hui.

''Je suis venu à Tanger pour annoncer officiellement le soutien du Portugal à la candidature de Tanger pour l'Exposition internationale de 2012'', a affirmé l'ambassadeur portugais dans une déclaration à la presse à l'issue d'une rencontre avec le wali de la région Tanger-Tétouan et président de l'association Tanger Expo-2012, M. Mohamed Hassad.

Ce soutien traduit l'excellence des relations bilatérales profondément ancrées dans l'histoire des deux pays et qui trouvent leur prolongement dans une coopération économique allant crescendo, a souligné M. Rosa-La.
''Nous avons aussi une expérience à partager avec les responsables de la candidature de Tanger à travers la très réussie exposition internationale organisée par la capitale Portugaise en 1998'', a-t-il dit.

L'Expo-1998 est une date marquante dans l'histoire de Lisbonne puisqu'elle a permis une profonde transformation de son tissu urbain, a affirmé M. Rosa-La, rappelant que les préparatifs pour abriter cette manifestation ont donné lieu à de vastes chantiers qui ont permis de réhabiliter et embellir près d'un tiers du tissu urbain de la ville qui souffrait d'un sous-équipement.

L'ambassadeur a également exprimé son admiration pour le thème de la candidature de Tanger ''Routes du Monde, rencontre des cultures. Pour un monde plus uni'', relevant que c'est un thème d'une actualité saillante compte tenu de l'aspiration de l'humanité à un monde où règne la paix, la fraternité et la tolérance.

Et de préciser que la ville du Détroit, jouissant de son aura de ville cosmopolite et ouverte, sied parfaitement à l'organisation de cette manifestation universelle dans l'esprit de cet idéal.

A l'occasion de cette visite, l'ambassadeur a présidé, jeudi, la cérémonie d'accréditation d'un consul honoraire de son pays dans la ville du Détroit en la personne de M. Jamal Mikou, directeur général de la zone franche de Tanger (TFZ).

M. Rosa-La s'est également entretenu avec les entrepreneurs portugais installés à Tanger où une quinzaine d'entreprises portugaises sont actives au niveau de la TFZ dans différents secteurs industriels et emploient près de 15.000 personnes.

Selon M. Rosa-La, plus d'une dizaine d'unités vont s'installer prochainement dans la région de Tanger.

La France aussi

Un autre pays européen a également annoncé son soutien à la candidature de la ville de Tanger pour l'organisation de l'Exposition internationale 2012. Il s'agit de la France.

"La France a décidé d'apporter son soutien à la candidature de Tanger pour organiser l'Exposition internationale de 2012", a affirmé aujourd'hui le porte-parole du ministère français des Affaires étrangères, Jean-Baptiste Mattéi lors d'un point de presse.

"Nous considérons que cette candidature, qui a été présentée (ndlr : récemment à Paris) par le Wali de la région Tanger-Tétouan et président du Comité de préparation de Tanger 2012, présente plusieurs atouts", a indiqué le porte-parole du Quai d'Orsay.

Evoquant ces atouts, M. Mattéi a relevé notamment qu'"il s'agit de la première exposition internationale qui sera organisée dans un pays du continent africain mais aussi dans un pays arabo-musulman", ainsi que "le thème retenu qui est la Rencontre des cultures".

La France, qui "est très attachée au dialogue des cultures et des civilisations ainsi qu'à la promotion de la diversité culturelle (...), souhaite marquer son engagement aux côtés du Maroc à travers cette décision", a-t-il ajouté, formant le souhait de voir Tanger "remporter l'adhésion de la majorité des membres du Bureau International des Expositions (BIE)".

Tout au long de 2007, les villes candidates - Tanger, Yeosu (Corée du Sud) et Wroclaw (Pologne), seront engagées dans une intense campagne internationale pour rassembler la majorité des votes des 98 Etats membres du BIE qui éliront la ville hôte d'Expo 2012 lors de l'Assemblée générale en décembre prochain.

La Belgique soutient la candidature de Tanger pour l'organisation de l'exposition universelle 2012
Marrakech, 19/03/07- Le Premier ministre Belge, M. Guy Verhofstadt, a affirmé, lundi à Marrakech, le soutien de son pays à la candidature de la ville de Tanger pour l'organisation de l'exposition universelle 2012.

Dans une déclaration à la presse à l'issue de l'audience que lui a accordée SM le Roi Mohammed VI au palais royal à Marrakech, le Premier ministre Belge a indiqué avoir informé SM le Roi "que la Belgique soutient la candidature de Tanger pour l'organisation de l'exposition universelle 2012 à laquelle tient beaucoup SM le Roi".

M. Guy Verhofstadt a ajouté que ses entretiens avec le Souverain ont porté sur l'intensification des relations entre les Royaumes du Maroc et de Belgique.

SM le Roi Mohammed VI avait reçu, lundi au palais royal à Marrakech, le Premier ministre belge, qui conduit la délégation de son pays aux travaux de la première session de la Haute commission mixte maroco-Belge, qui ont débuté lundi à Marrakech.

Your are right. For example the Arab/muslim world had never had World Cup soccer or Expo or Olympic games etc. Turkey or malaysia are good countries with good infrastructuur and safe countries etc and still they have never had big events.

That's exactly what I think, before the World Cup 2010 was awarded to South Africa, the excuse was "the West won't ever award a world competition to Africa", now that South Africa is going to host the tournament, it's about the West not awarding competitions to Arab/Muslim countries... I think the Muslim world would develop a lot more if they worked hard to solve their problems instead of constantly making excuses and blaming someone else for what goes wrong there.

I'm not saying they're always wrong in who they blame, all I'm saying is they won't improve their situation by just whining.

The BIE is currently composed of 98 member nations: 36 from Europe, 25 from Latin America, 12 from Asia, 8 from the Middle East, 14 from Africa and 3 from Oceania.

The BIE president, currently Wu Jianmin from China, is elected by the General Assembly and serves for two years.


The country that wins two thirds of the vote will be the winner. If no country sweeps the vote, a second vote will take place between the top two countries.

L’heure de vérité approche. Dans quelques jours, la ville de Tanger devra accueillir la commission d’inspection du Bureau International des Expositions. Mandatés par le BIE, ils ont pour rôle de relever sur le terrain les grandes lignes de la candidature tangéroise pour l’organisation de l’Exposition Internationale de 2012. Mais les organisateurs sont confiants dans les chances de la ville et du pays d’accueillir ce prestigieux événement. La candidature de Tanger se caractérise par son originalité.
De prime abord, elle est la première ville africaine, arabe et musulmane à prétendre accueillir une exposition internationale. Elle répond ainsi à la volonté du BIE de porter l’Expo en Afrique, dans le monde islamique, alors que jusque là elle s’est limitée à un aller-retour entre Asie, Amérique et Europe.
Un autre attrait de Tanger réside dans l’originalité du thème choisi, «Routes du monde, rencontres des cultures, pour un monde plus uni». Tanger en tant que ville carrefour se retrouve parfaitement enchâssée au sein de cette thématique tant au niveau géographique qu’historique.
Au niveau des infrastructures, la candidature arrive à point nommé. Tanger est le siège depuis quelques années d’une véritable révolution en matière de développement urbanistique et infrastructurel. L’une des principales portes d’accès du Maroc se retrouve au centre de l’intérêt. Le joyau de la couronne reste le port TangerMed, qui devra entrer en service dans quelques mois seulement. Véritable nœud maritime de premier niveau, il permettra à la ville d’entrer dans le monde du transport international de plain-pied.
La ville est aussi en train de se doter d’une infrastructure d’accueil touristique du premier ordre. A l’horizon de 2012, Tanger verra sa capacité litière portée à 29.000 lits. Ce qui lui permettra selon le comité d’organisation d’accueillir à l’aise les six millions de visiteurs prévus durant les trois mois que durera l’exposition, soit une moyenne de 65.000 personnes par jour, avec des pics de 130.000 visiteurs durant les jours de pointe, soit l’équivalent d’une petite ville comme Larache. L’exposition durera du 16 juin au 16 septembre 2012 et l’horaire d’ouverture sera, pour les pavillons de 11h00 à 23h00 et pour les parcs d’attraction et d’animation de 10h00 à 03h00 du matin.
Afin de faciliter l’accueil des visiteurs, le site, un lac artificiel qui sera asséché, a été aménagé de manière à assurer un maximum de fluidité. Il se situe à l’extrême ouest de la baie de Tanger, sur une centaine d’hectares dont 25 seront dédiés à l’exposition, le reste pour les activités annexes, telles qu’hébergement ou restauration. Il devra connaître une deuxième vie avec une reconversion radicale. Sa forme futuriste, en étoile à cinq branches, ne lésinera en aucun cas sur la sécurité. En effet, l’ensemble des visiteurs du site pourront être évacués en cas d’urgence en moins de cinq minutes.
L’un des grands gagnants avec l’organisation de l’Exposition reste la ville de Tanger. Cette dernière verra son infrastructure routière renforcée et son aspect rajeuni. La ville est d’ores et déjà lancée dans un processus de mise à niveau avec un budget conséquent de plus de 700 millions de DH sur les cinq prochaines années, un rythme que les responsables de la ville entendent augmenter tout en accélérant le rythme à l’occasion de l’Exposition.

Engagement marocain

Faire mieux que la Corée, tel est le vœu des membres de l’Association Tanger 2012. L’accueil des membres du BIE se fera par plus de 200.000 personnes à la plage municipale de Tanger où un mégaconcert de bienvenue sera organisée la soirée du lundi 30 avril. Ils espèrent faire mieux que l’accueil de Yeosu qui a mobilisé près de 100.000 personnes.
Les Coréens qui ont plus d’un tour dans leur sac n’ont pas manqué l’occasion de montrer l’appui pour la candidature de leur ville avec un million de signatures. C’était sans compter sur le génie local. A Tanger, c’est plus de trois millions de SMS d’appui, modernité oblige, qui attendent les membres du BIE. En effet, la semaine dernière, plus de 10 millions de SMS appelant à appuyer la candidature de Tanger ont été envoyés. Le nombre de réponses, attestés par notaire, risque bien de dépasser toutes les espérances.


Structure officielle

A noter que le Conseil du gouvernement a décidé dernièrement de la création d’une structure dédiée, «Exposition internationale Tanger 2012 ». Elle aura une double autonomie, en matière de gestion et de finances même si elle sera responsable devant la Primature. Elle aura pour tâche de retracer les recettes et dépenses afférentes à l’organisation de cet événement.
Cette entité viendra épauler l’association Exposition 2012 dont la création avait été annoncée en juin dernier par son président, le wali de Tanger Mohamed Hassad.

Montreal, May 10 - Morocco "stands a good chance" of organizing the 2012 International exposition, Carmen Sylvan, chairman of the executive commission of the International Bureau of expositions (BIE), told MAP.

"BIE shows interest in Morocco's bid to host the 2012 expo, because it is the first ever for a developing, Arab, Muslim and African country," Mrs. Carmen added, noting that "there is a certain sympathy and a certain welcome for such a candidacy that is very good for Morocco."

"Morocco can measure up to a candidacy of a universal exposition. It is an excellent project and Morocco stands at the same level as others, which is a good thing," underlined the chairman of the BIE.

"It is hard to say who will win, but [Morocco] has certainly good chances," she said.

Mrs. Sylvan, who is also Director General of commercial bilateral relations, met with Moroccan Foreign Trade Minister, Mustapha Mechahouri, during his visit to Canada to present Morocco’s candidacy to the Canadian officials.

Morocco presented Tangier as a candidate city to host the 2012 International Exposition -under the theme “Routes of the World, Cultures connecting. For a More United World”- to the members of the BIE, during the 140th session of their General Assembly, held on December 18-19 in Paris.

Former diplomatic capital of Morocco, the city of Tangier is undergoing a genuine economic and cultural renaissance in line with a vast program of investments undertaken to modernize the country, which should come to full fruition at the start of the next decade.

In addition to Tangier, two other cities have applied to host the 2012 International Exhibition: Wroclaw (Poland) and Yeosu, (South Korea). A vote of the General Assembly of the 98-member BIE will decide in December the winning candidate.

The BIE was created according to an international convention signed by 98 countries in 1928. This Paris-based institution regulates the frequency of these expositions as well as their quality

Un pas de plus vers l’Expo 2012, c’est ce que le Maroc et Tanger ont assuré, avec la tenue d’un colloque à Asilah, organisé vendredi dernier dans le cadre de la candidature de Tanger. Ce colloque auquel ont assisté plus d’une cinquantaine de membres du BIE a été une réussite dès le début de ses travaux. D’abord par le nombre de personnes présentes (une cinquantaine) qui dépasse le score réalisé par la ville de Yeosu, en Corée du Sud. Cette dernière n’a réussi à attirer qu’une vingtaine de membres, la ville polonaise de Wroclaw, l’autre concurrente de Tanger pour 2012, risque bien de ne pouvoir faire mieux.
Tanger, dont le charme et la solidité de sa candidature ont été saluées par le BIE lors de la visite de la commission d’Inspection, il y a quelques semaines, n’a pas manqué de confirmer son avance par rapport à ses concurrents. Mettant en avant ses potentialités, le colloque a servi de démonstration de la validité du concept Tanger 2012 tant sur la plan technique qu’au niveau du thème choisi, «Routes du monde». Ce thème, qui constitue l’un des points forts de Tanger, a été décliné dans différents sous-thèmes lors de ce colloque. Cette fois, c’est l’aspect culturel qui a été mis en avant avec la participation d’un des auteurs contemporains les plus connus du Maroc, Tahar Benjelloun. Lauréat du Prix Goncourt 1987 et traduit en plusieurs dizaines de langues, Tahar Benjelloun a évoqué la magie de Tanger et l’inspiration qu’elle a apporté à des dizaines de voyageurs à commencer par Ibn Battouta, le fils prodige de la ville, et à toute une myriade d’écrivains venus de différents pays et qui ont succombé au charme de la ville du détroit.
Le colloque a été aussi l’occasion pour les membres du gouvernement marocain d’apporter leur soutien à la candidature et d’apporter un éclairage nouveau sur le Maroc d’aujourd’hui.
C’est le cas de Karim Ghellab, ministre de l’Equipement, Salaheddine Mezouar, ministre du Commerce et de l’Industrie, Adil Douiri, en charge de l’Artisanat et du tourisme, qui ont placé Tanger et sa candidature au sein de la dynamique actuelle que connaît le Maroc.
Et pour couronner le tout, le Premier ministre Driss Jettou a, lors d’une réception offerte en l’honneur des participants, souligné l’engagement du pays entier pour la candidature de Tanger et pour les valeurs de dialogue, de tolérance et de respect qu’elle porte.
Le Premier ministre n’a pas manqué de mettre en avant aussi les grandes avancées que le Maroc a réalisées.
Le colloque a été aussi l’occasion pour les membres du BIE, dont la plupart des ambassadeurs en poste à Paris, siège du Bureau, de découvrir la ville et ses environs. Ils ont visité le site qui servira de cadre à l’exposition à la baie de Tanger et le mégaprojet du port TangerMed.
La dernière étape pour la promotion officielle de Tanger se tiendra en juin prochain à Paris où chacune des villes concurrentes pourra défendre sa candidature devant les membres du BIE réunis en assemblée. Le vote final aura lieu au mois de novembre prochain.

Le gouvernement de la Galice, une région autonome dans le nord-ouest de l'Espagne, a annoncé vendredi soir qu'il appuiera la candidature de la ville de Tanger pour l'organisation de l'Expo-2012.

"Nous appuyons totalement la candidature de la ville de Tanger pour accueillir l'Exposition internationale en 2012", a affirmé le président du gouvernement autonome de la Galice, Emilio Perez Tourino, dans un discours prononcé lors de la projection en avant-première, à Saint Jacques de Compostelle, de la série maroco-galicienne "Linatakalam".

La Galice se joint ainsi à d'autres régions et pays du monde entier qui ont dorés et déjà exprimé leur soutien à la candidature de la ville du Détroit à accueillir cet événement mondial.

M. Tourino a saisi cette occasion pour souligner l'importance des relations entre le Maroc et la Galice, relevant le renforcement de la coopération économique entre les deux parties lors des dernières années.

Il n'a pas manqué de réitérer sa gratitude à S.M. le Roi Mohammed VI pour le geste Royal envers les pêcheurs galiciens affecté en 2002 par la catastrophe écologique du pétrolier "Le Prestige", rappelant que le Souverain avait offert, d une manière exceptionnelle, aux pêcheurs de cette région des licences pour opérer dans les eaux marocaines.

Le président du gouvernement autonome de la Galice a fait part de son engagement à renforcer les liens de coopération avec le Maroc et à ouvrir de nouveaux canaux de dialogue avec les membres de la communauté marocaine vivant dans cette région et dont le nombre est estimé à 6.000 personnes.

M. Tourino a souligné l'importance du dialogue entre les peuples, les cultures et les religions pour la résolution des conflits, félicitant les promoteurs de la série "Linatakalam" pour cette initiative qui vise à rapprocher les peuples riverains de la Méditerranée.

Le documentaire "Linatakalam" est une invitation à la réflexion sur des questions d'extrême importance pour les peuples méditerranéens comme l immigration, les idéologies, la résolution des conflits, a dit le président galicien, qui a lancé un appel pour le dialogue entre les différentes cultures et civilisations du monde entier.

Plusieurs personnalités du monde de la politique, de la culture et de la communication, dont le ministre de la communication, porte-parole du gouvernement, Nabil Benabdellah, ont assisté à la projection en avant première de cette série, fruit d'un protocole de coopération entre la Société nationale de radio et télévision (SNRT) et la chaîne espagnole "Localia" (Groupe Prisa).

D'autres partenaires, notamment la Télévision publique espagnole (RTVE), la télévision publique de la région de la Galice "TV Galicia", ou la maison de production italienne "Surf Films", ont participé à ce projet, dont le maître d'œuvre est la maison de production galicienne "IBISA TV".

Wow thats interesting to know that Poland is investing so much in such a short period of time. Now I think the question that deserves to be asked is not whether Poland is capable of hosting both, but rather whether its fair for it to host both events, especially knowing that they are both major events of the year.
I think it makes sense to allocate the events to different countries, even though the decision making bodies for both events are autonomous.

Poland has big problems because there are not enough people to build hotels, infrastructure, stadions etc in Poland for the 2012 European football cup. They know want to import people from aboard to build this...

That means that the change that they get also the Expo 2012 is very small. Because that is too much work and they haven't got a lot of builders to do the work...

For Example. Turkey, Tunesia, Egypt etc are advertising everywhere. In every magazine you see advertsings of this countries...

Even on bus stops you see big billboard with holiday posters of Turkey and Tunisia...

Here's an interesting article written by an American tourist who visited Morocco 7 years ago I think.

When I think of Morocco, I think of busy cranes--big cranes --busy building homes, apartment houses, and other living quarters. Wherever I went in that extraordinary country, I was rarely out of sight of some kind of construction. Thus, if Morocco is indeed a third world nation, as it is supposed to be, it is a very strange one. I have visited a number of third world countries, but none other has been so constantly busy building. Moreover, this appears to be private, not public enterprise. This odd mixture of peoples (Berber and Arab, mainly, but also including strains from various former conquerors--from Phoenicians and Romans to Vandals and French --is simply absorbed in throwing up housing for its population. If things continue at this rate, in another two or three decades, most Moroccans will be better housed than most Americans.



But unless things change dramatically, Americans will never know it. While Morocco is a very popular tourist destination for Europe, it is almost unknown in America. To me this situation is a mystery. Here is an exotic country offering most of the attractions on which my fellow citizens spend millions of dollars every year, yet most Americans would be hard pressed to locate it on a map. Moreover, whatever they know about Morocco is wrong. They know, vaguely, that the Sahara lies somewhere in the vicinity, so the first thing that comes to mind is camels. Africa, the Sahara, camels. . . . That combination probably means Bedouins, oppressive heat, oil, horrific misrule, and of course, turbaned fanatics bent on jihad. One is best advised to avoid such places. Time was when my mother, who knew virtually nothing about Morocco or indeed, of Africa, was charmed by Rudolf Valentino as the Sheik of Araby, but that was half a century ago, and my more contemporary countrymen have reason to look elsewhere than to an Islamic nation when they think about a vacation.



Morocco deserves a better press. In my not very humble opinion, she would be well advised to invest a few millions in a first-rate advertising campaign to inform would-be American tourists of the basic facts about the country – not only its charms, safety, climate, lovely cities and fascinating history – but also the ordinary truths which most Moroccans take for granted. These facts are news to Americans, and I believe it is mostly sheer ignorance that keeps Americans from enjoying the beaches, the medinas, the skiing (skiing in Morocco! – who would believe it?), the Roman, Carthaginian and medieval ruins, and the incomparable cuisine of the country.



Maybe part of the explanation lies in the proximity of Mexico and the Caribbean. These areas are only a few, inexpensive hours away and – though they have their disagreements with the US – somehow their residents don’t seem so lethal as Near Easterners (how Moroccans, occupying Africa’s extreme northwest corner, get labeled “Near Eastern” is beyond my understanding). Not to detract from the appeal of Mexico, a country I love and visit as often as I can afford the trip, but Morocco enjoys one great advantage: it does not have most of the afflictions that dog gringos traveling south of the border. One often hears: “You can’t trust the water.” There is real substance to this complaint, but one can drink tap water in Morocco. “Better avoid food you buy in the markets or on the street.” Many an incautious American traveler has learned the meaning of “Montezuma’s revenge” to his chagrin, but there is no gastric counterpart in Fez, Casablanca, Tangiers or indeed, even in small towns. “Mexico City’s air is so polluted you can cut it with a knife!” and “Crime is rampant, especially in Mexico City.” Sadly, these objections often become part of the experience of Americans who do not take proper precautions. To be sure, Morocco has traffic problems and crime, but these problems pale in comparison to Mexico’s.



If I had to enumerate the problems of Morocco for an American tourist, I would begin with the languages. Few Americans know French, even fewer Arabic, and Berber means a sweater or a rug. Therefore, something like a cadre of English-speaking guides is a necessity. And these guides should be well versed in Moroccan history, government, economy, investment opportunities, and of course hotels, cafes, the sights, and the mechanics of changing money. If not experts themselves, they should co-opt local aides who know the geography of the local medina, the location of honest merchants, good and moderately-priced restaurants, and the location of reasonably clean pissoirs (and their counterparts of ladies). Finally, and possibly most importantly, they should be able to dismiss beggars, peddlers, and other hangers-on (and they are legion in every Moroccan city). I have had considerable contact with such citizenry in many countries, but I have never encountered the equal either in persistence or aggression of the Moroccan variety. They are even inventive in their entrepreneurship. I recall one very pretty girl with a modest command of English in the market in Marrakech who fashioned a friendship ring for me. Then, it appeared she wanted money, and responded to my demurral with a flood of obscenities, which would have done credit to a stevedore. I fled, pursued by her charming, if shrill “fuckyoufuckyoufuckyou!” But for the most part, I had the good fortune to have an excellent guide on my two visits to Morocco. When the beggars and peddlers had reached the point of driving me to distraction, he would say a few words and the offenders would smile and disappear. I am sure he was saying something to the effect of “Beat it, these are my suckers!” but whatever he said, it worked like strong magic. This ability to shoo away unwanted attention is, I repeat, a very necessary quality in a proper guide in all Moroccan cities of any size.



Such minor inconveniences aside, a trip to Morocco is, in my experience, an introduction to a delightfully different and very interesting ancient culture and civilization. It is a fascinating, marvelously convenient, perfectly safe, clean, and above all, exotic experience. The country is so progressive that it seems improper to call it “third world.”

In many ways it seems more like the first world than some of the members of the European Union. A pity that more of my countrymen and women are so fearful of Muslims. that is right mr 79 now that my boss came back from morocco not long ago ( I am a vacation sales marketer in USA ) we will now begin to sell vacations to morocco starting in july of 2008. the big boss of course has to approve it and now I have a new duty and that is to prove to my big boss ( he is the owner of the company ) what morocco is all about and what a great destination it if he likes and approves it I will get paid 1000 dollars bonus I know he will love it because I got so many good things to say to him

Le Maroc accueille pour la deuxième fois depuis le lancement de sa candidature pour l’Exposition internationale de 2012, les représentants du Bureau international des expositions (BEI). En effet, ces derniers sont invités à participer à un colloque scientifique organisé à Marrakech le 12 novembre sur le thème « Rencontres et diversités culturelles ». Une thématique retenue par la ville de Tanger dans son projet « Routes du monde, rencontres des cultures: pour un monde uni» (www.leconomiste.com). «Plus de 70 pays sont attendus à cette rencontre », indique Jelloul Samsam, directeur délégué de l’association Tanger 2012, en charge de l’organisation du colloque.
Pour l’occasion, le Maroc compte capitaliser sur ses avancées dans différents domaines économiques et sociaux. Celles-ci seront présentées notamment par Salaheddine Mezouar, ministre de l’Economie et des Finances, Ahmed Chami, ministre du Commerce, de l'Industrie et des Nouvelles technologies et Nouzha Skalli, ministre du Développement Social, de la Famille et de la Solidarité.
A l’issue du colloque, la délégation se rendra à Tanger pour une dernière visite de chantier. Dans cette optique, la ville «a mis les petits plats dans les grands». Tout est mis en œuvre, en effet, pour faire pencher la décision du BEI du côté du Maroc. Ainsi, les associations locales ont été invitées à préparer le programme de la visite. Au menu, la visite des futurs sites retenus pour abriter l’événement, des expositions artistiques, des spectacles etc.. Plusieurs peintres de la ville sont en train de préparer plus d’une centaine de tableaux inspirés par les paysages de Tanger. Ceux-ci seront offerts aux membres des délégations. Et seront également mis en ligne sur le site dédié à la candidature marocaine. Tous les internautes du monde entier pourront ainsi en profiter.
- Par ailleurs, quelque 10.000 écoliers tangérois sont associés à l’organisation de la visite. Ces derniers préparent un cocktail d’animation. Le projet est mené par le cinéaste Jilali Ferhati.

I can not believe that they will give the Expo to Poland because the have al ready a major event the EC footbal 2012. And Korea had the Expo in 1983 and in 2002 they had the World Cup football.

If you look at the progress that the city of Tangier has made and the huge changes she's still undergoing i think she deserves to get this event.
However, that's actually not very important. Important are 2 things: Presentation & Lobbying. And Morocco doesn't know crap about both.

An other thing... Because everybody is still talking about it, I also want to say something about the WC 2010. As a Moroccan I'm glad Morocco did not get the WC because I think it would harm Morocco more than it would benefit it (financially and in terms of reputation, if you know what I mean). I cannot wait to see how South Africa wil do this difficult job in 2010, with the perfect/excellent organisation of Germany still in my mind!
I have to give one example in this context (that may look out of place but in my opinion is not). Here in The Netherlands, they have decided to do research to find out IF they COULD host the Olympic Games in 2028. I mean: it's ridiculous that a rich and developed country like The Netherlands doesn't even know IF they ARE ABLE to host such a big event on a term of 20 years, and Morocco thinks they can host big events in 5 years, just like that..!
Okay, comparing the Expo with the Olympic Games is not very honest, but comparing the 2 greatest sport events (WC and OC) in the world makes more sense and should give us something to think of.

Anyway, I'm also still very excited if Tangier is going to get the Expo :), because I love Morocco. But honestly, the presentation of Yeosu (as I have seen on their website) and their renders of the Expo-site made me forget about Tangier and made the expo-site of Tangier look like my backyard.

I think this is an interesting development. The main quote from the article being:
"There are 22 new members which joined the BIE in the last three months, which is a breach of the agreement we signed at the start of the campaign together with Morocco and Korea. According to this agreement, which was a gentlemen’s agreement, the countries obliged themselves not to facilitate the accession of new members to the organization. What happened after a year is that since July new members were joining the BIE one after the other. And if you look at the map of the world you can see that more or less half of them are from Asia and the Pacific region and another half are African countries."

I dont think it is systematic to believe that new African countries would vote for Morocco, while AsiaPac ones would vote for S.Korea. If that was the case, it would be necessary to look into the Asia ones and see whether any are Muslim/Arab countries that are sympathetic to Tangier's bid...

Sous un ciel presque printanier, malgré le froid, une marée de drapeaux marocains flotte, des portraits du roi Mohammed VI sont brandis et des banderoles pour souhaiter aux pays membres du BIE la bienvenue à Tanger sont déroulées par les centaines de Marocains rassemblés aux abords de l'édifice où le vote doit avoir lieu.

Dans une ambiance festive, les troupes folkloriques rythment aussi l'enthousiasme débordant de la communauté marocaine en France, à laquelle se sont joints des ministres et des membres de l'"Association Tanger 2012"' avant de regagner le lieu du vote.

"L'association des Tribus Sahraouies vous souhaitent la bienvenue à Tanger", "Pour Tanger 2012", "Nous sommes tous avec Tanger", "Tanger prête à relever le défi", peut-on lire sur quelques banderoles.

Cette forte mobilisation de la communauté marocaine en France reflète l'engouement de tous les Marocains, ainsi que la mobilisation de très nombreuses personnalités étrangères pour la candidature de Tanger à l'Expo 2012.

"Nous sommes venus de toutes les régions de France pour exprimer notre soutien à la candidature de Tanger. Le Maroc est une grande Nation qui va représenter dignement tous les pays du monde arabo-musulman et tout le continent africain", a déclaré à la MAP M. Mohamed Chbicheb, président de la Fédération des Travailleurs Marocains en France.

Pour Zineb Alaoui, présidente de l'"Association Solidarité Méditerranéenne", "le choix de Tanger sera une fierté et un défi à relever pour la ville du détroit, appelée à devenir l'un des premiers pôles économiques du Sud de la Méditerranée".

"Tanger à toutes les chances de relever ce grand défi. C'est une ville universelle, multiculturelle et ouverte sur le monde", a souligné, pour sa part, Mme Fatima Belarbi, présidente de l'"Association des Femmes Marocaines à l'Etranger", affirmant qu'"avec la ferme volonté de SM le Roi Mohammed VI de faire de Tanger et du nord du Royaume un grand pôle économique, l'appui de tout le peuple et de tous les Marocains à l'étranger, Tanger réunit toutes les conditions pour recevoir les 6 millions de visiteurs prévus à l'occasion de cette exposition internationale".

Pour le Wali de la Région Tanger-Tétouan, M. Mohamed Hassad, le Maroc a fait une "campagne dynamique, efficace, ciblée et fair-play". "Notre dossier est solide et notre crédibilité est bien installée", a confié M. Hassad, à la veille de ce vote.

Pour cet homme discret, qui privilégie l'action à la parole, le choix de Tanger s'impose. Le thème choisi d'abord par le Maroc "Routes du monde, rencontre des cultures. Pour un monde plus uni" est fortement lié à l'identité du Maroc en tant que terre d'échanges, de tolérance et de symbiose des cultures et des civilisations.

Ce thème symbolise aussi l'identité de la ville de Tanger par sa position géographique à la porte du détroit de Gibraltar, sa vocation historique de ville carrefour et les grands projets d'infrastructures de transport qu'elle développe actuellement, a-t-il noté soulignant que le projet de plan d'aménagement de l'espace de l'exposition devant accueillir les pavillons des 140 pays est conçu de façon originale et répond aux normes de sécurité, mais aussi d'esthétique.

Refusant de se livrer à des pronostics, M. Hassad défend en revanche avec ardeur le droit des pays de l'hémisphère Sud à organiser une exposition internationale, qui constituera une belle opportunité et une reconnaissance pour ces pays de faire valoir leur savoir-faire et leur expérience en la matière.

Les délégués des 140 pays membres du BIE vont voter par scrutin secret lors de cette 42ème Assemblée Générale de l'organisation. Outre Tanger, deux autres villes, Yeosu (Corée du sud) et Wroclaw (Pologne) sont en lice. La ville lauréate sera connue en fin de journée.

PARIS, Nov 26 (Reuters) - The South Korean city of Yeosu has been chosen to host the international Expo 2012 ahead of Tangier in Morocco and the Polish city of Wroclaw, organisers said on Monday.

Delegates from Yeosu, who based their application on the theme of the living ocean and coast, cheered and embraced in the corridors of the Palais des Congres in Paris after the result was announced.

The city, an industrial port near two national parks, won a vote of members of the Paris-based International Exhibitions Bureau.

"If we didn't have full confidence in our success, it would have been impossible to be consistent in putting across our message," South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo told a news conference after the announcement.

"The Yeosu ocean and coastal agenda required countries surrounded by oceans and coasts to really be aware of climate change and the environment issue," he said.

You are not right. Maybe Moroccans have a bad name in Holland and Belgium, but the Dutch people all know Marrakech and are there often. All the Dutch rich people, stars, jetset have all houses in Marrakech. Marrakech is now very hot in Holland. And Moroccan food, tea is very known in Holland. Eeverybody in Holland knows Tajine. In Supermarket you can buy couscous, Moroccan tea etc...

And the Dutch tourist to Holland is growing. Turkey had more then 17 years a bad name in Holland. Everybody thought that Turkey was poor etc. And know has it become one of the favourite tourist places for the Dutch. Because Turkey did som much adversting..

morocco is not a rich country, so the government has to target its communication so as to be efficient. for instance, former minister of tourism adil douiri had identified 5 prioritary target-countries for moroccan tourism industry: germany, UK, italy, spain and france. when this strategy succeeds and make the tourist arrivals increase, then touristic taxes will offer a larger promotion budget, and allow morocco to widden the number of targeted countries (for example, gulf, russia, benelux, USA, etc.)

same issue for tanger 2012: limited budget means targeted strategy for maximal efficiency. Dutch or US TV watchers don't vote, only country representants do. anyway, hard luck for tanger, but brilliant attempt. we are proud that this moroccan candidacy has been taken seriously, although it failed this time. next time inchallah

I'm feeling sad as well, but keep in mind that its a competition, the best has to win. its not a matter of "affirmative action". maybe this argument has been taken into consideration ("give an historical chance to the developping countries"), but it cannot be the only reason to choose a candidate. tangiers score against yeosu is honorable (77-63: we only needed 8 more voices to get the victory) comparing to the huge gap of development beetwen both countries (a 1 to 20 ratio)

Yes, it's my opinion, the universelle expo should be called 'The expo of rich countries'. Souht Corea got it in 1993 (Taejon) and now once again... Only five 'expos' later...
The 'poor' countries should move out from the BIE and create their own organisation to orginize expositions reserved only for them.

Founded in the fourth century B.C. by the Phoenicians, Tangier is the oldest city in Morocco and is considered by the Moroccan people to be their doorway to the world. Construction of the Tangier Exportation Free Zone is already well underway and the majority of the work is expected to be complete by 2010. “The Moroccan authorities have put strict environmentally sensitive measures in place to prevent the kind of over supply of property we have seen in other developing areas,” Direct Morocco’s Morten Skjelborg points out. “It really does represent a fantastic opportunity for investment in overseas property. At the moment, you can still buy a beachfront apartment for as little as sixty thousand pounds.”

I'm feeling sad as well, but keep in mind that its a competition, the best has to win. its not a matter of "affirmative action". maybe this argument has been taken into consideration ("give an historical chance to the developping countries"), but it cannot be the only reason to choose a candidate. tangiers score against yeosu is honorable (77-63: we only needed 8 more voices to get the victory) comparing to the huge gap of development beetwen both countries (a 1 to 20 ratio)

I said it months ago. The FIFA, IOC, Olympic Games, Expo etc are all corrupt. Everybody knows that. The FIFA chairman Sepp Blatter is many times accused of corruption. The IOC members are many times bought. The Olympic Games in Salt Lake city where bought. Germany prommised after the won from South Africa that the World Cup in 2010 will go to South-Africa and they did everything to make this happen.

The countries with the most money get always the big events, because the do good lobby and buy votes. That is why the poor countries never win. Morocco still thinks it is a fair game

yep mr 79 we live in a corrupted world and only the few " strong nations " can get evertyhing they want ! it is political it is about money and it is not fair jusat plain and simple
I know morocco will do better and gettting better and they can prove it after the projects and most important themore positive attitude from morocco that is the key to improving the country
