They are unstable but i am talking about beauty wise. The pictures aren't bad.

Yes i hope Iraq can go back to the iraq of the 60ies and 70ies.

Hopefully, but that would mean Iraq going back to Abdul-Qareem Qasim era. That guy was a communist lover, Iraq should be looking to bring back the times of the Abbasids, when Baghdad was the capital of the whole Islamic empire, thats something to be proud of, but for now anything but reality is better IMO. :)

Iraq can be once again great. With the enormous amount of natural resources that it has (having the third largest conventional oil reserves after Saudi Arabia and Iran, and only having 10% of the country explored for oil!), they can rebuid the country and be happy and prosperous.

Baghdad will also hopefully once again be a center for justice like it was from the 3rd to the 7th century, and hopefully be a center for science and knowledge like it was in the 7th-10th centuries :)

Nice pics... I have only been in the southern part of the country, which had been neglected by Saddam for a lot of years, but Basra did have some nice apartment complexes in the outskirt and many of the suburban areas are real cozy - I kinda get the feeling Mosul is like that too..

Basra Airport is now the HQ for the MNDSE - we used to be stationed there for a week at the time to conduct Helicopter patrols over Basra and the southern part - The Airport is very nice and still have a few shops.. it's a bit surreal to enter it, since it looks like something from the 70's with all the interiors kept in brown and orange, plus the level of luxury doesn't really fit the surrounding area - but hopefully it will very soon.. the Iraqi people truly deserves that!

i have a question. i noticed there werent many advertisment billbords. what type of advertisments or photos are usually on the billboards in iraq?

fakkous
May 19th, 2006, 02:20 PM
I'm British but have Iraqi born parents, some one emailed me these photos so i wanted to share them with you, since you people like buildings and natural stuff. :)

But from what i have seen from photo's and TV, most billboards advertise the new Iraqi army and security forces, there are many in Baghdad saying "be the eyes and ears of the police" and stuff like that, i don't live there so i'm not much help really.

I never knew that, but Basrah is lovely, why did you get the impression that its not developed, i saw pictures of its downtown and i was really impressed. Yeah the airport was built in the 80's but it couldn't be refurbished due to non-fly zones and whats the point of refurbishing an airport that can't be used anyway,

But people usually see some mud huts on tv, i posted this to prove people wrong.

why did you get the impression that its not developed, i saw pictures of its downtown and i was really impressed. Basra downtown is nice - with some nice shops and and the waterfront. But ofcause it bears the marks of having been in a war zone for the last 20 years..

The area North of Basrah - the Marshes around the city of Al Qurna really took a beating after Saddam divirted the water from the area, but it's being let back slowly now... When I arrived in 2003 the Glory Canal ( the anti tank canal digged in the 80's stretching from Al Qurna and up towards Al Amarah ) and the surounding fields was almost completely dried up and very few people lived or ventured there, when I left in 2005 the area was green and full of water again - it was very nice to see :)

Yeah the airport was built in the 80's but it couldn't be refurbished due to non-fly zones and whats the point of refurbishing an airport that can't be used anyway Point taken :)

people usually see some mud huts on tv, i posted this to prove people wrong. Well, atleast for the Basra area mudhuts are very common, especially in the Mash Arab's small villages, but ofcause people in cities live in real houses and some of them would easily qualify for small palaces too...

I love the outer wall thingy all houses have - it's kind of a nightmare in case of CQB, but living in them looks very cosy and private.

Exactly. Salman Al Farsi, as he became known, was a Persian prince (who by the way had many names), and who helped Muslims in their conquest of Iran. Basically betrayed Iran and helped Muslims in order to gain more power. That's why the capital's name was changed to his name -- reflecting his involvement of conquest of Iran.

i respect your opinion. nevertheless i read his biography and he was a truth seeker. the guy was a prince in persia but he became a slave for a jewish merchant in arabia. afterthat he was liberated by prophet mohammad. another thing for you to know, he wasent the campain leader. they made him the prince cause he was persian. regards

The capital of the Persian Empire for centuries was at a city called Ctesphon, a few miles from Baghdad. That city is now called Salman Pak, showing the role that Salman Al Farsi (also known as Maya, Naja, Behbood, Roozbeh -- he had many names) had in overthrowing the Persian Empire.

And with regard to the Biography that Hamorabi refers to, much is said about Salman Al Farsi, but it is not very believable that a slave who was "liberated" became a prince and got the capital of an empire named after him. In fact, he was a member of the Persian royal family before the fall of the Persian Empire and was seeking additional power. His father was the governor of Isfahan. He was no slave to anyone, but rather was from a very powerful family.

Mohammad, in a letter, shows great respect for all that Salman did for Mohammad. You can go read it if you want. I am unable to find it on the net.

Even Ali mentions Salman Al Farsi in his will.

By the way, Paak means clean in Persian...

This all shows the great role that he had in the fall of the Persian Empire. But anyway, I just wanted to share the pics...

I always knew that Baghdad was a nice city but again like Iran they never show those parts in media.
Baghdad has such a cool and exotic architecture.

Does Iraq have a tiny coastline?

FREKI

Does Iraq have a tiny coastline? Yep, the Al Faw peninsula... but years and years of war ( mainly Iran-Iraq ) has turned the area almost unused.. ( some oil pipes run out into special oil-loading stations out in the ocean, and that's about it... )

The hole area is very desolated, muddy and full of UXO and mines, so not excactly a place for civilian companies ( another great place destroyed by Saddam :sleepy: )

But the Shat el Arab river that runs up to Basra ( and splits into the Tigris and Euphrates ) is used a lot, and the port city of Um-Qasar close to Kuwait..

thanks mr denemark for these pictures. but just an information, tigris and euphratus joins at kirna and forms shat al arab, What you call Kirna is probable the city we called Qurnah...
It was right where the rivers met, with an old Hotel and a small park with a three ( said to be the tree of knowledge from the garden of Eden )
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/6827/02hq0.jpg

I've know that area like my backpocket :)

and i wanna ask u how long did u serve in iraq? and how was the people reaction to your presence there? I served 2x 6 months - the first tour ( 2003-2004 ) was in the Qurnah area in Camp Eden, about 10km west of Qurnah

The second tour ( 2004-2005 ) started at Camp Eden, but we resieved a larger AOR from the British, so we moved down to Sheibah Log Base ( old military Air base 20 km west of Basra ) and Camp Eden was closed down the early fall of 2004

The people were great... everyone was nice and waved all the time ( even in the spring of 2005, 2 years after the war ) many was also very helpful, except for the nomal criminals, car thefts and murders ( mostly on ex-barth party members ) the area was very peaseful - and the people seems happy to see us and have us around

Clan fights did take place a lot - old scores being settled and areas seized, normally our policy would be to stay out of it, as long as it didn't endager kids or women and then negotiate a truth with the sheiks involved and nearby tribes - but some tribes like the Bani Malik and their sub tribes didn't always play nice, so we did strugle a bit with them... and the Muqtada al-Sadr uprising did also affect us a bit, but all in all the area Qurnah area was peaseful and a nice place to be ( very scarred by former wars unfortunatly, especially the Marsh Arabs had suffered )

When we moved down near Basra the threat level did rise, as IED's was very common there, and we did take a few, but normally here too the people were nice and welcomming... We also spend a lot of time on the Al Faw peninsula, and in the cities of Al Faw and the cities among the Shat al Arab river up to Basra

The Al Faw area was as peaseful as Qurnah and our biggest problems there was humidity and smuglers..

All in all I had a great time there, the people were very nice and I made several friends, the area was also very beautiful ( atleast to me ) but it did bare the markings of so many years of wars.. but new buildings and projects started every day almost, so it did progress..

To me the rivers ( Tigris and Euphrates ) were my favorite areas, it was like being back in time.. where you would see the small fishing boats and have the green plants and fields and people would comes from miles away just to say hello when in the area... it was like from another time..

Unfortunatly we didn't get to see much of the country north of us, as we were part of the MNDSE, but I did take a few tours to Nasiriyah ( Talil Air Base right outside to be precise ) man I've would have loved to see UR, but only very few got to go, as we didn't want to act like tourists...

Al Amarah is about the northernmost city I've been to..

Ur seen from Talil
