Believe it or not, this was completed only weeks ago.
Just curious to hear peoples views on this disgrace in urban planning.

Thanks for choosing the worst hotel in Birmingham for a 'rate-a-scraper' I hope it's a joke or just a dig? 1/10... but i struggle to see where the 1 came from...

Its not a dig at Brum. I know very well that the Brummies condemn this building. This is just the worst newbuild I have ever seen since I joined this forum though...

Show them the pictures of the "back".

It's one saving grace is the fact it's not that massive, and imposing over the skyline.

It's terrible.

I'll give it 2 because it had scope to be much much worse, and the workmanship is actually quite good...

Without rubbing salt in the wounds, Etap also has plans for Leeds, in a pretty damn nice tower, although it was built speculatively. Etap seems to be targetting the UK - good thing is it's only £32 per night. Atleast if you stay in it you get to look out of it not at it! http://www.thegatewayleeds.com/

I voted a one but it deserves minus 10 at least. A shitebox of a shitty building covered in shite, made by shatters who shat the bed.

In other words i dont like it.

Perfect spot for a tower and we end up with a giant plaster - Good un.

Wait till you see the little windows and lack of detail, an even bigger Prison!

Possibly. In fact Armley Jail is a pretty funky building.

It's better than, and God forgive me for this:

(edited to add, notice another hotel in the far left of the above picture, so where would you choose to stay?)

oh sweet jesus, that is bad, truely abysmal.

there's functional, and then there's a look that seems to remind me of one of my old Universities Halls of Residence which was famously modelled on a Swedish prison block. I'd expect Etap might not even want their name attached to such an elephants dump of a piece of architecture.

I'm praying the Leeds Etap doesn't look as 'budget' as that.

haha. it was tonytowers. Glaswegians have a sense of architecture.

I couldn't comment tho. I voted a 10 for our city's imitation of the Guild Centre in Preston.

yeah probably should have been a 4 but it was partly in reaction to the over the top comments form others

It undoubtedly poor, it has very little detail and the crappy little windows are a bit of disgrace but I struggle to HATE this building.

Its in an unimportant location doesn't stick out and its mostly a very clean white that makes it much more pleasant than most of the 60s shite iMO. It has so little positive going for it that its hard to defend and is a missed opportunity but equally I don't see how demolition would improve the area.

I think there are plenty of uglier new builds around in the UK especially in business parks. Even in central Birmingham I think its better than the curved park central building facing out onto lee bank middleway.

I really cant understand the vitriol stirred by this nondescript building but then again I quite like the look of prisons and blank white walls in interiors.

That's such a fucking ugly building - completely sterile. I always said that it resembled a huge white sticking plaster. And it does! And good to see that others think the same too... :puke:

Can you imagine what it would look like if it was rotated 45 degrees and UPENDED SIDEWAYS - thus standing taller like a huge soulless slab of NOTHING.... :runaway:

10/10 - This is architecture any city should embrace and strive to build. What a spectacular building, simply stunning. Talk about original, exciting and ground-breaking, I'm just shockedit ever got planning, it's such a daring project. Bravo to the council for letting it go ahead.

90 Degrees Martin!

No! I said 45 degrees - this building deserves to be slanting!

Not only would it look utterly stupid but then it would be an unmistakable landmark which would REALLY stick out like a sore thumb!

lol, definitely

i voted 1, but wanted to vote 0

what a fucking embarrassment. i'm pretty sure that most 3 year olds could design a better building.

looking at the "Old Birmingham" thread, and seeing our treasures being demolished for the functional pieces of crap that our city is stereotyped with makes me wonder whether we have learnt anything at all.

i'd rather have a patch of grass on the site rather than that building

I saw the completed thing in full for the first time last week, and I don't quite know how to say this, but it's not that bad....

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0431.jpg

it's got more detail that I thought it would, I think it could be that the bands that the windows are shaded slighty darker, and gives the thing a more streamlined shape, and the signs and stuff help break up the prison effect.

Not saying it's a great building, but it's not a 1/10 monster, in a stand and stare pointing and shouting how ugly it is sort of way, If I could retract my 1/10 I'd give it 3 or indeed possibly 4 out of 10.

Did the local B&Q run out of white emulsion?

Bachy Soletanche
August 5th, 2006, 10:22 PM
The people painting the Orion building must have bought all that shade, and then when they went back to get some more Etap had bought all the remainder, which would explain the bizare paint job on Orion...

I agree with you Stephen. That picture does make it look slightly more attractive. Either you're a good photographer or it genuinely is an ok building.

Everything about it is bad, down to the logo. Bad day at planning office when that was given the approval. I do not see how anyone could rate it 10/10.

Seems out of place for Bristol Street. But the whole area near the Middleway's is changing.

Walked past the demolished St Luke's School - they want someone to develop the site.
