Football mode, athletic mode, rally mode...fairly beautiful with its floating roof...very modern...do we have a winner in the multipurpose category?
Sparks May 23rd, 2006, 08:52 PM multipurpose means it's good for a lot of events but not great for one individual one.
eddyk May 23rd, 2006, 09:14 PM Nah, the roof is wicked, the moveable stands are ok.
Everything else is a bit average...and i've been twice.
SE9 May 23rd, 2006, 09:17 PM I like the Stade de France as a venue, but I dislike the exterior.
I was also surprised at how far back the fans at either ends sat from the pitch. Apart from that, its a top-class venue.
Booze May 23rd, 2006, 09:26 PM A stadium I will ever forget :)

Simply The Best May 23rd, 2006, 09:28 PM Superb stadium. Nothing 'average' about it at all. Do some people even know what the word average means???? There is no such thing as an average £300 million 80000 stadium!!! Walkers Stadium is 'average'.
Its AlL gUUd May 23rd, 2006, 09:29 PM the exterior is not all that, and i wouldn't call it the best, btw there is already a thread on this topic, of which is the best stadium
Seth Gecko May 23rd, 2006, 09:38 PM A decent stadium, but not without its faults. The distance between the stands and the end of the pitch behind the goals is unacceptable (in football mode).
The seats are also rather bland, and I'm not keen on the lower stairwells, wide at the top that get thinner toward the bottom, but this is fairly inconsequential.
All in all it was £300m well spent.
Simply The Best May 23rd, 2006, 09:53 PM Having watched football in it (France v Scotland), the distance was fine. I had a superb view behind the goal. It wasn't as close as some stadiums, but if you have normal eyesight then it is fine.
dande May 23rd, 2006, 10:38 PM Those stands could go closer to the pitch for football games, the stands behind the goal would have lower angle but I think the oval shape could be preserved.
reyrey May 23rd, 2006, 11:00 PM No.
I hope this helps.
Loranga May 23rd, 2006, 11:03 PM Hard to describe, but it feels like it is a athletics stadium which can adapt for football use. I would have preferred the opposite; designing it for football primarily, adaptable for athletics.
Maybe this could have been done by actually removing the lower stand on the end zones when using it in athletics mode? Of course the sightlines for the running track lane number 7 and 8 wouldn't have been optimal, but who cares? ;)
Fillet Tower May 23rd, 2006, 11:22 PM The roof and seating bowl are impressive, apart from the huge gap for football matches, but that is as far as it goes. The cheap looking exterior could be mistaken for a multi storey car park if it wasn't for the roof. Entrances and facilities are also poor. The place needs some colour.
Eindhovenispower May 23rd, 2006, 11:24 PM this ground sucks because the goal line and sidelines are a "few miles" away from the front rows. and i dont like that. obviously the stadium was built multi-purpose.
Its AlL gUUd May 23rd, 2006, 11:33 PM i think the majority of the posts here have decide that NO its not the world's best
Mo Rush May 23rd, 2006, 11:50 PM so is it the best athletics and football stadium in the world combined? if wembley stadium is excluded...also having a retractable seating system.
pompeyfan May 24th, 2006, 01:19 AM it's a good stadium but in my eyes it is starting to look old.... Maybe once i go there it will look better
James21 May 24th, 2006, 01:51 AM Exterior is crap, and for a recent stadium the facilities for fans are dire, about one urinal for every 1,000 fans i reckon, it was mental at the champions league. Seats are crap and for 300m i'd expect more.
Schindlers Fist May 24th, 2006, 02:10 AM The stadium has for more than 80 piss bins!!! The bog I was in had about 20 alone!! Are you saying the stadium only has 4 toilet blocks????? Stop talking mince!!
What's wrong with the seats???? Do they have spikes in them or something?? A plastic seat is a plastic seat!!
Jack Rabbit Slim May 24th, 2006, 04:08 AM Well, the short answer to this is most deffinitely no! I don't think even the most ardent of Frenchies would say that is was. Back in 98 it might...I say might...possibly have been the world's best, but it is starting to look quite dated now, which is quite sad when you consider it's barely 8 years old. I have never been inside the stadium but I saw the exterior of it up close a couple of years ago and from what I saw of it then and the pictures on the internet, it justs looks really bland and uninteresting, could really be any stadium. It just doesn't have any glamour or a unique defining characteristic that people would really recognise it with and talk about. Don;t get me wrong, it is a very decent stadium, one of the world's best, but quite far (and getting further) from being world's greatest. The thing it does have going for it (as has already been mentioned) is its easy capability of becoming either a football/rugby stadium or an athletics stadium...but each individual purpose is inferior to stadiums that are designed for just the one. Just my oppinion, don't get in a fuss if you don't agree. :)
Btw Mo, did you create this thread thinking it was the World's best stadium, or were you just interested in other people's views? Just curious.
Seth Gecko May 24th, 2006, 04:10 AM He was trolling.
Juan Kerr May 24th, 2006, 04:12 AM Not the best in the world, but among the world's elite.
Mo Rush May 24th, 2006, 11:19 AM i created this thread as i seriously for a second could not think of another stadium that catered as well as it did for athletics and football, maybe im just impressed by retractable seating..or just find it unacceptable that no attempt is made to cater better for football and athletics etc. no hidden agenda if thats what ure asking...
wembley stadium when its finally complete with its ability to include a "platformed" athletics track would prob be the best ....if not stade de france..then which stadium? i.e. which stadium caters for athletics and football the best..or attempts to host both the best..?
Giorgio May 24th, 2006, 11:27 AM Very beautiful Stadium.
Durbsboi May 24th, 2006, 11:31 AM I think its a cool stadium, but as the others said its not the best & the outside is ugly :(
but France needed this stadium, the Park de princess was gettig abit old.
Zorba May 24th, 2006, 03:32 PM Without a doubt my favorite stadium in the world!
ULTRABEN May 24th, 2006, 03:57 PM Very ugly from outside and the arena is boring
skaP187 May 24th, 2006, 04:10 PM are there any other stadiums with the same option of adjusting the lower tire stand or the pitch so it is multifunctional for and atlatics and football? maybe in Japan something of is I dreaming again?
skaP187 May 24th, 2006, 04:23 PM and no it is not my nr 1 stadium, I like it though
Durbsboi May 24th, 2006, 05:27 PM ^^New wembley will have something similar, a floating track on raised platform or sumthing like that.
The Hunted May 24th, 2006, 05:45 PM The Stade de France is a great stadium with innovative design features such as the movable lower tier and the roof. The exterior however lets it down in my opinion making it look from the outside older than it actually is.
BaronVonChickenpants May 24th, 2006, 05:46 PM an over-rated staduim.A compromise.Not a fan of a staduim that tries to be a 2jack of all trades"
why, when for the vast majority of its life it is a football staduim(rugby included)did they build it so it could convert into an athletics stadium(how many athletics meetings/championships has it held?)
If they could hide the fact,no problem, but the huge space between the stands and the pitch gives the game away. When in ahtletics mode, the staduim has problems with sightlines.Certain areas on the lower tier cannot see all of the bend.
Its a good staduim, but not a great one.Pity,it could have been one of the best
Genç May 24th, 2006, 07:24 PM I wouldn't say it was the best, but it certainly is one exceptional stadium.
Neda Say May 25th, 2006, 01:29 AM As a frenchman in exile I have to make a stand.
Stade de France is probably not the best stadium in the world but it sure stands all the way up there. I've been to football games, ruby games and track and field meeting... If football games are far from perfect it has to be one of the best atmosphere you can get for rugby... especially when scots and irishs are in town... The same for t&f event
low point of this stadium... poorly finished exterior, white dirty seating, some colored would have changed it dramatically... just think of Stadium Australia... And generally way to much people wearing suite...
All in all I think that it belongs to the multipurpose world top five stadium... I would say second only to Australia Stadium...
Neda Say May 25th, 2006, 01:33 AM Stade de France is home to one golden league meeting evey year. They held the race of champion there too, Andros ice racing trophy, supercross event...
They have up to 35 events a year with less than ten football games... This stadium is generating profit on his own... Not bad for a stadium with no resident club
BaronVonChickenpants May 25th, 2006, 10:55 AM Stade de France is home to one golden league meeting evey year. They held the race of champion there too, Andros ice racing trophy, supercross event...

the Millenium Staduim in Cardiff also stages many other events other than football/rugby(speedway for example0and does this without having the stands miles away from the pitch. The only thing Cardiff doesn't do is athletics,so it would seemt that the Stade de France is built the way it is just so it cn have one golden league meeting per year???
Paris has a prefectly good dedicated athletics staduim. What use is that now??
staff May 25th, 2006, 10:58 AM It's a great stadium. However, it's not even close when it comes to being one of the best football stadiums in Europe (European stadiums are of course outstanding in the world)...
kichigai May 25th, 2006, 11:14 AM Has anyone got any images showing how the seats move? Would be interesting to see and help add to the discussion.

kichigai May 25th, 2006, 12:44 PM Appreciated Dursboi.
Setup looks similiar to Telstra Stadium - Sydney, where the lower tier can be moved to accomodate australian rules football/cricket rather than for athletics.

Yes, except TS's seating moves right up to the sideline when in rectangle mode (but end seating doesn't move an inch).
NavyBlue May 25th, 2006, 03:24 PM IMO the best stadium in Europe and by quite a margin which includes the new Wembley.

BaronVonChickenpants May 25th, 2006, 05:00 PM ...and I'd agree with them if thread was titled "Worlds best FOOTBALL stadium" which it isn't.
i would have to disagree with you Navy on how good Stade de France is(though you may have a point about Euro footy fans)
i still think this Staduim is a compromise.A jack of all trades,Master of none
whats the point in having a staduim that cn host tractor pulls, speedway, monster truck rallies etc etc. What the French needed was a staduim for Rugby and Football internationals, and the '98 World Cup.(as Parc des Princess was outdated and too small). And for Rugby and football it could have been so much better, but they chose to build a stadium that tries to cater for everything.
THIS STADUIM DOESN'T KNOW WHAT IT IS!!!!!

^^i think this statement is kinda outdated now.
Generally i think this stadium looks awesome from the inside, but the outside is a monstrosity. Its very ugly and doesn't look like much thought was put in the design of the exterior.

It is still a beautiful stadium, but I had no idea that it was so close to residental area.
Jim856796 March 12th, 2009, 10:28 AM Is the stade de France a rectangular stadium or an oval stadium?
Bobby3 March 13th, 2009, 12:12 AM A rounded rectangle more than anything.
magna graecia May 2nd, 2009, 02:24 AM One of my favorite stadiums in Europe. Modern, with all the emenities of a modern stadium. The only problem I have with it is the track. More and more I feel football stadiums should be as close to the action as possible, it adds to the viewing and feel of the game.
I know Paris wanted the Olympic games as well, so the get a pass

Nobody wants to read your stupid comments. You are a useless immature troll.:bash:
parcdesprinces May 10th, 2009, 08:54 PM ^^Thank you !
Besides he forgets, in its short history (11 years), this stadium has already hosted many major events:
2 World cup finals (IRB+FIFA)
2 UEFA Champions League finals (2000 & 2006)
1 FIFA confederations cups final
1 IAAF world championships in athletics
1 annual Golden league meeting
and also many concerts...
This is not so bad !
Ganis May 11th, 2009, 03:34 AM all stadiums host allot of events, but it does not mean it looks good. Its an ugly design and my opinion.
parcdesprinces May 11th, 2009, 04:12 AM All Stadiums... Are you sure ???
I'm talking about 2 World cup finals....
Ganis May 11th, 2009, 06:18 AM and? good, it gets big events, it does not sit around un used, it payed it self off. YAY! It did what it was built to do. Big games, woooooo. still Does not make it any better looking!
IronMan89 May 11th, 2009, 01:30 PM It's maybe not the best looking stadium, but this project is from the mid 90's so it is great to have such a stadium in 2009 15 years after being designed!
Mo Rush May 11th, 2009, 03:50 PM The operators of this venue are also the operators of the new World Cup stadium in Cape Town.

parcdesprinces July 11th, 2009, 08:28 PM I know, nobody likes it, except me
But it's big, suitable for 3 sports (football, rugby and athletics) with its mobile stands, it has 10,000 business seats and 172 suites and has hosted 2 World Cup finals (football + rugby), 2 UEFA CL finals and IAAF world championships in athletics : All that in less than 10 years.....
Finally, I'm maybe not the only one who likes it......
Its design is simple and classy/elegant (I mean it's not a kitsch plastic-style and/or colourful "design" as so many other stadiums).. etc

parcdesprinces February 1st, 2010, 12:46 PM Surely its best attendance would have been the world cup final, or am I missing something?
Yes, it was ;) :
Its official capacity is 81,338. Its best attendance was 80,430 during the rugby world cup final :
http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/2610/image1vfy.jpg
But, since the last French FA Cup final (2009), its new crowd record is: 80, 832  !
As far I know, In 2008 it also broke the world's attendance record for a rugby regular season game ! (79,793).
Mo Rush February 1st, 2010, 02:07 PM Off topic, but are there any planned upgrades for the athletic facility adjacent to Parc des Princes? The proposed Paris 2012 hockey venue.
parcdesprinces February 3rd, 2010, 12:59 PM ^^ Yes, it's the home of Stade Français-Paris (Rugby, Top 14).
There is indeed, just behind the current stadium, a hockey ground (I played in this club when I was a kid :)).
They are going to rebuild the Rugby stadium and the hockey ground will be moved in the Bois de Boulogne, just like the athletics track.
Rebuilding works will start next summer, BUT (we're in France) there are many strong opposition groups: Taxpayers, local politicians and the community of the district (which is one of the wealthiest in Paris). They are trying to get the invalidation of the project (they want a new project, cheaper, and merged with the new centre court of Roland Garros which should be built 500 meters away) !
In the FRANCE - Stadium and Arena Development News thread ;):
Location: Paris, Ile de France
Name: Stade Jean Bouin (Rebuilding)
Tenant: Stade-Français Paris, Rugby
Capacity: 20,000 seats
Opening: 2012
Cost: €160-180M

eMKay August 29th, 2010, 05:01 AM I don't think it's "outdated" maybe the designers could have spent more time on the exterior, maybe some cladding, but in my opinion that's not what makes a stadium great.

Any particular reason for the different seat colours? Looks very random.
parcdesprinces October 12th, 2010, 02:09 AM ^^
Business seats: Green slipcovers (the number of seats is flexible in function of the event: up to 10,000)
Suites and VIP seats: Blue slipcovers.
When some of these seats are not used, then they don't put the covers.

This is how every stadium should handle gaps. Elegant with the blue and the brazil logo (and french on the other side i assume) shows they put some effort into it (kinda like fully painted endzones in football). Whoever was in charge of the outlook of stade the france for this game, i salute you

It's the French Football Federation, they do the same at each France team match now, since last summer (and the French fiasco in RSA). Maybe in order to restore the team's image I guess, but they also did it a couple of times before 2010 for very special matches.
Here is the stadium during France-Romania (Euro 2012 qualif., october 2010):
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/7747/capturedcran20101012011.jpg
And actually, the plastic tiles covering a part of the track were decorated numerous times with various colored carpets, depending of the event: Pink for the Stade-Français-Paris rugby games, blue with the teams' logos and names for the Cup Finals, red for the Top 14 rugby final, blue during France 2007 Rugby WC, green during France '98 WC, and blue for the French football team...

Does anyone here know for sure?

Jericho-79 April 28th, 2011, 09:10 AM They will stop playing rugby on it and it will remain a football stadium? What are you expecting, that they tear it down?
Well, Stade de France has been a premier concert venue.
As far as massive concerts go, Paris has three major venues- Stade de France, Parc des Princes, and the future Arena 92.
If/When the new national rugby stadium is built, I was just wondering whether or not Stade de France will continue to host large-scale concerts.:dunno:

Interesting news:

yes because indeed when supporters of PSG are there, security is under pressure :D
But in the past finals have reach to more 80k seats sold.
The most sad is that this is generalized for all the match of ligue 1 where clubs reserve stupidly more 2000 seats when you have only 30 visitors :ohno:

I asked it because to me the distance between the field an stands of the Wembley stadium an the Stade the France (in football modus) are roughly the same.
I think stadiums like Stade the France are the future. Adjusting to Athletics and Football. (they had to this with the London Olympic Stadium)

If it were the future there would have been more stadiums applying this design. But I can't name a single stadium with retractable stands. It seems to remain unique rather than the start of a design revolution.

Your absolutly right.
That's why they should build more stadium like this. Look to London, stupid they didn't adjust the stadium.
Very much stadiums where national teams play have an athletics ring, so bad view, to far from the pitch, no atmosphere. So this can be a solution to this problems.

Axelferis January 8th, 2012, 06:15 PM **RUMOR**/!\**RUMOR**
The actual owner of PSG -> Qatar Sports Investment is preparing to bid for the takeover of SDF for an amount of 340 millions euros!!
Plus they want to invest 130 millions euros to modernize it to be one the modernst stadium in europe!!!
The article (from a crap newspaper i recognize) :

parcdesprinces January 8th, 2012, 06:40 PM ^^ The funniest part is the feedback below the "article"....
this so-called "newspaper" is literally lynched by its own readers because of the crap they dare to write, and apparently this time, with this "article", they pushed their crap too far, according to the insults & the mockeries of their readers in the feedback !
Axelferis January 8th, 2012, 08:45 PM i know they are crap but they were right for ancelotti (only the timing were wrong).
But more seriously i seriously doubt that qatarians want a 47-50k seater.
They want something bigger for a region of 10 millions inhabitants.
They have the financial power to built their own stadium (+some politics are their bit*** :| )
To be continued...
parcdesprinces January 8th, 2012, 09:10 PM Another funny part in this "article" is this one:
les propriétaires du Stade de France auraient donné leur aval à cette transaction, validée également par les autorités françaises.
So, according to them, the French State has decided/is ok to sell the national & bigest stadium of our country to the Qatari....and nobody mentioned it, except this so reliable garbage newspaper !
Neither other media, nor the French Authorities, nor the oppositions parties, nor the current operator of the stadium (which btw has signed a deal with the French State to operate the stadium until 2025), nor the French football federation, nor the French athletics federation & the French olympic committee (which are also involved in this stadium), not to forget the Paris municipality who owns the Parc des Princes etc etc etc
Weird (to say the least) don't you think ? ;)
RMB2007 January 8th, 2012, 09:18 PM I guess they tarp off the seating areas directly next to the hospitality box/restaurant/what ever the glass box thing is?

parcdesprinces January 8th, 2012, 09:30 PM Tarped no, but indeed they don't use/sell these seats during the sports events:

Axelferis January 9th, 2012, 01:31 AM after informations more precized on radio or other medias the story is about to come into the capital of the consortium managed by both Bouygues & Vinci. The last company Vinci is partially owned by qataris.
They want to have the majority on the stake. they want to be now the consortium will manage SDF. Then it will enables to refurbish like they want the SDF and make play the PSG there.
Vinci & Bouygues+ french state are keen on that and they're ready to let this happen...
Don't forget that a giant "cake" of 100 billions works is to be eaten during the process bid to build stadiums in qatar for the 2022 WC!
We know that french companies building stadiums will negotiate to have the markets.
Then this news from le10sport.com wasn't 100% exact but nor either 100% wrong.
News are coming in the next weeks but we can be sure that PSG will left parc des princes in the next years.
Nothing can made now with jean claude claiming the parc is too small. He want to redo from zero the parc but delanoe mayor of paris doesn't want to deal with that.
Then the departure for st denis is just a question of months.

This is where the Euros could learn a thing about press boxes and suites from the Americans. We know how to add these without ruining sight lines.
parcdesprinces January 9th, 2012, 08:03 PM about press boxes
We don't have 'press boxes' in the french stadiums (except at the 70s Parc des Princes stadium in Paris... but they haven't been used since almost 2 decades). ;)
And regarding the suites, they are perfectly well integrated, in the overwhelming majority of the European stadiums (SdF included)... :|
canarywondergod January 10th, 2012, 01:07 AM This is where the Euros could learn a thing about press boxes and suites from the Americans. We know how to add these without ruining sight lines.
It's a very true point, although it is much rarer in the newer stadiums such as the Emirates and Wembley. However some American stadiums still contain bad sightlines, even ones costing billions of dollars. The truth is that a lot of stadiums will have bad sight lines to some degree.

lool, good point! most american stadiums lacks so much more, but i dont want to start with it...
If you consider that Stade de France was built in 98 it still looks great. Also it cost only 290 mio € and they can hold athletics events in it because of the unique movable stands.
jay stew January 11th, 2012, 11:22 AM Looks like the Stade could fit a NFL field.
How popular is the NFL in France? (serious question)
Axelferis January 11th, 2012, 12:56 PM It has a good feeling! It receives a good reception.
I think SDF could organize like Wembley do a regular match of NFL with a crowd of more 60k people.
Ile de France paris region is 10 millions people like london. I think there's 3 countries in Europe that can hold this event: England,France, germany
michał_ January 13th, 2012, 04:15 AM I think SDF could organize like Wembley do a regular match of NFL with a crowd of more 60k people.
Of course it's not like anyone will ask the NFL teams' supporters whether they would like to follow their teams to Paris, right? :) I really cannot understand the way money has won with anything that has to do with passion...
endrity January 13th, 2012, 07:17 AM I know all the issues with the contracts and the city hall, but I really would like PSG to play regularly here.
Parc de Princes is a shithole anyway for a team with the aspirations of PSG.

Really? Well that's just completely unreasonable. Aspirations don't have to come hand in hand with having the largest stadium possible, but surely with having a suitable stadium. Parc de Princes is old and that's a flaw. But apart from that it's a big stadium of rather high quality that may actually compete with most of Europe easily IF a decent revamp takes place...

on the contrary, the PDS is architecturally very nice ... much better than the Stade de France.
He just needs a restructuring within
