Obviously, there are dozens of billionnaires there in Mainland China but none wish to declare to the PRC gov't I think. Just look at the Forbes' richest ranking. None of them are appeared in the list which I think is impossible.

With the RM strenghtened against the US$..I believe our GDP per capita has increased by by almost $1000.

And if Malaysia's economy keeps enjoying GDP growth of at least 5%/year for 10-12 years, Malaysia's GDP per capita could reach South Korea's current GDP per capita. :)

^^ Yeah, Zhejiang and Guangdong have overtaken Malaysia. I think Zhejiang is ahead of Guangdong. Guangdong's aim is to overtake Taiwan within 5 years. So you can imagine their level of development.

Briefly translated, it says the GDP per capita ranking in China -

1.Shanghai - 18,645 (income) 13,733 (ppp)
2.Beijing - 17,653 (income) 13,244 (ppp)
3.Zhejiang - 16,294 (income) 12,254 (ppp)
4.Guangdong - 14,770 (income) 11,810 (ppp)
5.Tianjin - 12,639 (income) 9,653 (ppp)
6.Fujian - 12,321 (income) 8,794 (ppp)
7.Jiangsu - 12,319 (income) Chongqing - 8,623 (ppp)
8.Shandong - 10,745 (income) Jiangsu - 8,622 (ppp)

^^ I think if we do not count Malaysia as a whole, Klang Valley alone should have GDP per capita of more than 20k already?

Just how strong is China? Imagine this in terms of population.
Hong Kong + Macau = abt. half of Malaysia
Shanghai + Beijing = slightly more than 1 Malaysia
Fujian = about 1 and a half Malaysia
Zhejiang = abt. 2 Malaysia
Jiangsu = 2 and a half Malaysia
Guangdong = abt. 3 and a half Malaysia
Shangdong = 10 Malaysia

remember it is taking ppp into consideration (purchasing power parity)

so inflation is already taken into consideration. however, if it was the obsolute level of GDP, i believe malaysia and china will be way down actually.....

I think that by comparing a province in China (despite the physical and population size of the place) to Malaysia which is a country could be very distorted. It would be just like how those 'know-it-alls' take Selangor's 'growth' and benchmarking it against Scandivanian and western European countries. Did ya guys know that Selangor's Negeri Maju also take into account of the economics that are generated by Port Klang and KLIA?

Malaysia on track to achieve 6% GDP growth

By Kevin Tan

Malaysia is still on target to achieve 6% gross domestic product (GDP) growth despite concern of higher inflation following the government’s decision to allow electricity tariff hike, Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said.

“Some of the cost can be absorbed by the companies. It will not be substantial as to affect the confidence or growth of the country,” he told reporters on May 26 after launching the International Business Owners Survey Malaysia Report 2006 in Kuala Lumpur.

Nor Mohamed said there was still a "feel-good" sentiment among the general public as a result of the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP). He said projects under the 9MP were taking off and the government was doing all it could to improve its delivery system.

Tenaga Nasional Bhd this week received the government's nod to increase tariff rates by an average of 12% starting June 1. Inflation rate rose to a seven-year high of 4.8% in March due to increased petroleum price.

On dissatisfactions voiced by the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers, Nor Mohamed said the government made the decision to allow a tariff hike after considering it for a long time and hearing views from all parties.

He explained that there was “the need for Tenaga to have a reasonable cash flow”. At the same time, Tenaga had been cutting costs and took measures to improve its financials, he added.

“In term of interests involved, we have no doubt it is for the interest of the country. In the short term, there will be some who will not like to adjust,” Nor Mohamed said.

He reiterated that 60% of the electricity users who consisted of those from the lower-income group would not be affected while the rest would only be paying marginally more, as the tariff increase was based on a sliding structure.

On the weakening of the ringgit recently, the minister said the government was not controlling it and the currency was still on a free float. He said the ringgit was in line with the movement of other currencies as the US dollar was on a technical rebound.
