spicytimothy June 2nd, 2009, 01:20 AM no corner rooms?
RafflesCity June 2nd, 2009, 04:13 AM Guess its not part of the design. Even if there were corner rooms, only 2 of the 6 possible elevations would have optimal views.
This design provides all rooms with either a skyline view or sea/garden view. Not to mention the skypark which should be a major attraction.

RafflesCity June 10th, 2009, 04:06 AM Marina IR's progress on track
10 Jun 09
CONSTRUCTION of the hotel towers at the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort (IR) is on target for completion by next month.
The three hotel towers have been built past level 50 - just five floors away from the 55-storey peak for hotel rooms, Marina Bay Sands announced in a statement yesterday.
The developer said it will hold an official topping-out ceremony early next month, presided over by Las Vegas Sands Corp chairman Sheldon Adelson.
The towers will contain around 2,600 luxury hotel rooms that are simultaneously being fitted out.
The US$5.4 billion (S$7.9 billion) IR will open by the end of the year, though likely not fully.
When completely open, it will comprise a casino, hotel rooms, convention and retail space, as well as various entertainment facilities.
Once the hotel towers reach 55 floors, Marina Bay Sands can start construction of the 56th floor and the 1ha Sands SkyPark on the 57th floor.
The SkyPark, which will stand some 200m from the ground, will have a public observation deck in the world's largest building cantilever.
Mr George Tanasijevich, general manager and vice-president of Singapore development at Marina Bay Sands, said the topping out will be one of many significant achievements over the next few months.
'We are putting the roof on the Expo and Convention Centre and are lining up luxury brands and cutting-edge designers for our retail stores.'
Last year, there were concerns that the project would not progress smoothly given the credit crunch. But Las Vegas Sands has assured investors that the Singapore IR is its top priority.

RafflesCity August 6th, 2009, 04:03 PM Marina Bay Sands in Singapore Tops Out Hotel Towers / Complex SkyPark Construction Commences in Next Phase
08.07.2009 07:01
SINGAPORE, July 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Marina Bay Sands(TM), a subsidiary of Las Vegas Sands Corp. , announced today that it has topped out the three 55-story hotel towers, a major milestone in a striking and iconic project to bring Singapore a premier integrated resort.
The company's senior executives celebrated the occasion with an event that attracted approximately 120 regional and local media as well as members of the Singapore government, the construction team, and other distinguished guests.
Las Vegas Sands Corp.'s Chairman, Mr. Sheldon G. Adelson, who came to Singapore for the event, said "Topping the hotel towers at Marina Bay Sands is a milestone in an exciting construction and engineering project. We're pleased to be another step closer to delivering on our promise to Singapore and we remain committed to creating the landmark, premier integrated resort in Southeast Asia."
The architects and construction managers employed industry-leading construction solutions on their way to the 55th story. The construction team had to use steel trusses to link the east and west legs of each tower about half way up and used innovative methods to seal the atriums in each of the three towers and in-between them. After the steel trusses were in place, the team was able to build one new hotel floor every four days, an unprecedented pace for skyscraper construction in Singapore.
Marina Bay Sands will be a unique destination in the region. It will be home to the Sands SkyPark(TM) and the Museum, that symbolizes the 'welcoming hand of Singapore', packaged together as part of a world-class integrated resort nestled in the heart of the city's Central Business District and the ever-expanding tourism and entertainment district at Marina Bay.
The Sands SkyPark is the next critical phase of construction. The contractor will hoist the 7,000-ton structure 200 meters to the top of the towers using technology usually used in building bridges. The process of lifting each of many individual sections can take a full day. When it is completed, the Sands SkyPark will be longer horizontally than the Eiffel Tower is tall and will be the largest cantilevered public observation deck in the world.
Work on the interior and exterior of the hotel towers is well underway and the roof is taking shape on the Sands Expo&Convention Centre and on the casino. Other areas are progressing well.
Mr. George Tanasijevich, General Manager and Vice President of Singapore Development, Marina Bay Sands Pte Ltd, said "Marina Bay Sands will be a magnificent destination, with world-class entertainment, convention facilities, dining, shopping, Las Vegas-style gaming, and a luxury hotel. It will transform the skyline and bolster Singapore's image as the city for business and leisure tourists to visit again and again".
"Over the next few months, we will unveil a range of luxury brand shops, celebrity chef restaurants and world-class entertainment for Marina Bay Sands. There will truly be something for everyone," Mr. Tanasijevich said.
When completed, Marina Bay Sands will feature large and flexible convention and exhibition facilities, approximately 2,600 luxury hotel rooms and suites, the breathtaking rooftop Sands SkyPark, a museum, Las Vegas-style gaming, the Paiza Club for premium players, theatres, entertainment, an outdoor event plaza, and unparalleled shopping and dining.

RafflesCity August 20th, 2009, 10:36 AM Marina IR secures tenants for 75% of its retail space
20 Aug 09
MARINA Bay Sands said it had secured tenants for three-quarters of its retail space, including French luxury brand Chanel, which will open its largest boutique in Singapore.
The integrated resort is expected to have about 300 stores for the well-heeled shopper in more than 800,000 sq ft of retail and restaurant space.
But only half of the retail space will open with the resort early next year along with the casino, 1,000 hotel rooms and most of the convention centre.
Marina Bay Sands said it is confident of its success as a 'compelling shopping destination'.
'We have enjoyed enthusiastic responses from retail tenants from all over the world,' said Mr David Sylvester, vice-president of Asia retail at parent company Las Vegas Sands.
Chanel is the first tenant to be announced. More names will be revealed at a later stage, said the resort's spokesman.
The Chanel boutique will be the third store in Singapore and its largest.
At 7,600 sq ft, the two-level boutique will be more than double the size of its first flagship outlet opened here in 1990 at Ngee Ann City.
In March, it opened a second outlet specialising in watch and jewellery, also at Ngee Ann City.
Chanel said it expects Asia to be a growing market for upscale brands.
The new outlet will be designed by New York-based architect Peter Marino, who is behind Chanel's most notable boutiques.
One of them is the 10-storey Chanel building in Ginza, Tokyo, built in 2005. It features a shimmering facade made of liquid crystal glass, woven stainless steel, and more than 700,000 LED lights.

helghast October 8th, 2009, 01:41 AM IF YOU fancy wading in a pool that makes it seem like you are flying off the edge of a tall building, you will get a shot at that soon.
The Marina Bay Sands (MBS) integrated resort will have a 150m-long infinity pool which overlooks the city skyline on top of its three 55-storey hotel towers. At a height of 200m above ground, it is the highest hotel pool in Singapore, said Ms Val Chua, MBS' corporate communications manager.
Swissotel The Stamford has two pools on its eighth floor at 30m above ground, while The Fullerton Hotel has an outdoor infinity pool on its second floor.
The integrated resort's pool, which is only for hotel guests, is part of the MBS SkyPark, a 340m-long roof-top garden which will bridge the tops of the three hotel towers.
It will have an observation deck set on a cantilever, which the public will be able to access via a non-stop lift from the ground to the top.
Jutting over the edge of the tower toa length of 66.5m, it is the largest of its kind in the world. A 2m-high glass barrier will be built around it.
Apart from the observation deck, there will be landscaped gardens and three food-and-beverage outlets, one of which offers casual dining, while another is a club by night. These are the only areas open to the public.
With an area of 12,400 sq m, the Sky-Park can hold up to 3,900 people. It is not known if there will be an entrance fee. Mr George Tanasijevich, general manager and vice-president of Singapore development at MBS, said the integrated resort is still trying to sort out how to manage traffic flow.
Weighing over 7,000 tonnes, the Sky-Park was constructed offsite. Pieces of its structure will be lifted into position at the top of the towers separately with heavy lifting equipment. The equipment will hoist the segments into place using a computerised mechanism which controls cables attached to temporary lifting gantries.
Lifting will start within the next two weeks, after test trials have been run.Construction work on the $150-million SkyPark should be completed around January next year, and the park should open in the second quarter of next year. -- MYPAPER

Pansori November 10th, 2009, 04:47 AM This is just amazing. When I first saw those buildings on a city model I thought there was no way they would build it anytime soon... and here we go. The whole area development (including the new pedestrian bridge) looks spectacular and impressive. I guess my next trip to Singapore will be with the main intention of seeing all of this completed.

Pansori November 19th, 2009, 12:15 AM I wonder if general public will be allowed to get ontop? It's going to be quite a location to observe panoramic views of Singapore. And most importantly an open-air one.
RafflesCity November 19th, 2009, 04:58 AM Yes Pansori, the skypark will be open to the public and I read that there will be an express lift to take you directly there. It will definitely be a totally new experience and a chance to capture brand new angles of the city skyline because no building has ever been built in that location before.

7 Dec 09
SINGAPORE : Marina Bay Sands on Monday said it has signed over 30 deals for premier events at its new Expo and Convention Centre.
This is expected to attract over 150,000 attendees to the integrated resort when it opens next year.
Marina Bay Sands said it has sealed events from a wide range of industries, from the engineering and legal sector to life sciences and renewable energy.
Some events are marking their return to Singapore after many years. For example, the Inter-Pacific Bar Association 2010 Conference will see top lawyers from the region converging in Singapore in May for the first time since 1994.
With the theme of 'Climate Change', the prestigious event counts former US Vice President and environment champion Al Gore as its keynote speaker.
Other events include the 2010 UFI Congress which will return to Singapore after a 15-year absence.
New shows that will debut at Marina Bay Sands include the Industrial Fabrics Association International Expo Asia 2011 trade show - the first major textile event catered to the Asian audience.
In addition, the Marina Bay Sands team is working on more than 100 additional prospects for meetings, incentives and conventions over the next four years.

RafflesCity December 18th, 2009, 10:56 AM 'What the hell is that?'
Antony Gormley expects that sort of reaction to his controversial, larger-than-life works. He talks to WOON TAI HO about his installation for Marina Bay Sands, which will be the largest sculpture in Singapore
http://www.businesstimes.com.sg/mnt/media/image/launched/2009-12-18/BT_NEWS_1_CURRENT_THGORMLEY.jpg
ANTONY Gormley is fascinated with the human body, particularly his own, which is what he models most of his works on. Currently, he has an exhibition in Beijing's 798 district titled Another Singularity where a matrix of a human body five times larger than life is fashioned from 682 bungee cords, forming a kind of cobweb stretching from the floor to the ceiling of an old three-storey warehouse.
While Singularity captured attention, it was a divided reaction that followed his recent work One and Other, which was part of the 100-day celebration of British democracy. For this project, he invited literally anyone - from the ordinary to the eccentric - to stand at Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth and pose as a live sculpture. The 'installation' had critics calling it everything from 're-definition of sculptural art' to 'complete rubbish'.
But the London-born installation artist brushes aside controversy and attention, saying that he would rather focus on the artistic concept behind his works.
Body case sculptures
The 59-year-old came to prominence in the early 1980s with his body case sculptures. For close to two decades, he worked around the world on he calls the Field project. Using local material from different regions, he got residents to make little figures of themselves and create a kind of surrogate population. For example, Asian Field - his installation for the 2006 Biennale of Sydney - comprised 500 clay figures made out of 125 tonnes of clay in Xianxian village, Guangzhou in 2003.
Gormley's commission for the Marina Bay Sands, though, will be of a totally different scale. Destined for the lobby of the main building, it will be the largest sculpture in Singapore, possibly the region. Standing eight storeys high or 24m, it will have a width of 13m and span a length of 40m.
Gormley calls it the Drift - basically a huge cloud made of stainless steel pieces originally measuring 12m by 3.3m (the biggest that could fit onto a local lorry). These were later made into various stripes that suspend the bubble balls.
While his other works around the world are spread out over a huge land surface (like Asian Field in Sydney) or occupying many floors (as in 798 Beijing), this is a single piece occupying a single space. Gormley was inspired to create it because of the sheer size of the Marina Bay Sands.
'The atrium is 300m - huge,' he says. 'It is challenging to fill up such a space. What I want Drift to do is to allow people to feel the space and be energised by it without feeling dwarfed. It needs to go with the enormity of the architecture, yet allow people to feel comfortable, hence the cloud.'
But where's the body, you might ask. Drift is still very much designed from the human form, or to be more specific, Gormley's human form. It is a floating cloud made up of 2,200 'balls', digitally modelled after Gormley's body.
But at this stage of his work, the form has become more abstract. In the last few years, Gormley's works have become more and more about the dematerialisation of the form rather than the form itself.
In his earlier works, where he used materials such as lead, he focused more on the skin, or the surface where substance gives way to appearance. With Drift, Gormley describes the form more like 'sound or smell, it's a long and tall cloud, it is hardly there', adding: 'It is based on the random bubble geometry fugitive - here one minute gone the next.' In the middle of this cloud, there is indeed a body form, but you would need to find it, as it is not immediately apparent.
Gormley has spent time in India and has been influenced by Buddhism. He explains that Buddhism underscores the most fundamental truth, which is we don't really possess anything at all - everything including our body, is temporary. Such is the thought behind One and Other, where people could be who they were - 'or were not', he adds - as an art work.
Unprecedented in scale
To make the Drift sculpture, Gormley enlisted Automated Machinery Equipment International (AME), an engineering company that specialises in marine and steel engineering. 'We started about five months ago,' says Steven Goh, AME's managing director. 'Seventy guys from our company worked on his sculpture, day and night.'
As the work was unprecedented in scale, AME first worked on the design in their factory in Tuas. 'We were chosen because his design needed very complex engineering expertise,' explains Goh, adding that the sculpture is something he never dreamt that he would be working on. By mid October, the sculpture was moved to Marina Bay. 'We feel honoured, a local company working on something so unusual, something so huge, and from such a world renowned artist,' adds Goh.
But what of the reaction of the public when it is finally unveiled?
Gormley is not too concerned.
'When you walk into the lobby, you are very likely to say: 'What the hell is that?' he says. 'My aim is for you to go explore it and find out for yourself.'

RafflesCity December 21st, 2009, 04:15 AM SkyPark works nearly complete
21 Dec 09
SINGAPORE - Integrated resort Marina Bay Sands (MBS) said the heavy lifting works at its SkyPark joining three hotels - a complicated megatonne steel structure that has slowed its construction - is near completion.
The last piece of the cantilever, part of a superstructure that weighs 7,000 tonnes in total, is scheduled to be lifted in coming weeks, making it the longest observation deck in the world, MBS said in a statement last night.
Flying into town to observe the completion of the steel structure was Sheldon Adelson, chairman of Las Vegas Sands Corp - which owns MBS - and his wife Dr Miriam Adelson.
"We wanted to bring something special to Singapore and the Sands SkyPark meets that ambition. The design is incredibly phenomenal. It is amongst the world's greatest engineering and architectural feats of modern times," said Mr Adelson.
"The completion of the SkyPark's steel structure represents a major milestone in the completion of this property."
During their visit, the couple signed a plaque thanking Singapore for making MBS possible - this will be included in the Sands SkyPark.
The SkyPark superstructure is made up of 14 individual parts, which are lifted using a unique combination of bridge and building technology, 200m above ground.
When completed, the 1.2-hectare Sands SkyPark will be home to restaurants, a 150-metre swimming pool, lush greenery and a public observation deck.
This latest update came as speculation of another delay surfaced last week, after a source familiar to the project told MediaCorp that the IR was targeting to open in April.
In the Today report published over the weekend, industry observers also said they are betting on a mid-year opening; while couples hoping to be among the first to hold their wedding banquets at one of its 25 ballrooms have been advised these should be for dates after May 15.
New hires for the integrated resort have also received letters stelling them to start work at a later date.
MBS was originally slated to open late this year, but a shortage of sand and slow construction work have delayed the project.
More updates could be given this week as Mr Adelson is expected to meet with local media while in Singapore. ANSLEY NG

The Skypark looks like a great idea. Will this make the Wheel less popular. The position of the wheel is further out and at a lesser height, yet the angle and view of the city are on the same side. Will be interesting to see.
This, along with Sentosa look like great additions to Singapores tourism and destination profile.

'Marina Bay Sands was clearly the most beautiful. It sits directly on the waterfront, which allows us to play with the presentation of the artworks and create an element of surprise for visitors' - Mr Lorenzo Rudolf, on why he is setting up the art fair in Singapore
For years, Singapore delegations who visited the prestigious Art Basel art fair tried to woo its director to set up a similar fair here.
But Mr Lorenzo Rudolf, who helmed Art Basel from 1991 to 2000, was not interested.
Things have changed and the 50-year-old Swiss national is now putting together a high-end art fair here with the backing and support of the Economic Development Board and the Singapore Tourism Board.
Neither organisation would disclose the budget for the annual event, but it will start in January next year and it will be held at the Marina Bay Sands integrated resort.
The fair also has the backing of the National Arts Council and the National Heritage Board.
Speaking to Life! at the Pan-Pacific Hotel, Mr Rudolf says that Singapore and the Asian market are ready for a fair to rival the world's best art fairs.
Asked why he turned down Singapore's earlier overtures, he says: 'I did not see the point of re-creating an Art Basel in Singapore. If collectors and art lovers wanted to see an Art Basel, they would go there. What was needed was something with a unique identity and branding.'
The art fair in the little Swiss town of Basel, nestled on the banks of the River Rhine between France and Germany, has been the focus of the art world for years.
About 800 art galleries from around the world vie for a place at the fair each year, but fewer than 300 are chosen.
The Singapore fair, to be held from Jan 12 to 16 next year, will feature 100 to 120 of the world's top galleries. They are expected to bring in the works of top artists.
The names of the galleries and the artists that will be featured are still being confirmed, but novices and seasoned art collectors alike will have the chance to see the works of modern masters such as Japanese artist Takashi Murakami and Indian artist Subodh Gupta.
Speaking of the venue, Mr Rudolf says: 'Marina Bay Sands worked for us because of its location. If you want to do an event this size, the venue has to be appropriate. There are not too many venues which can accommodate a fair of this size and Marina Bay Sands was clearly the most beautiful. It sits directly on the waterfront, which allows us to play with the presentation of the artworks and create an element of surprise for visitors.'
Beyond the venue, he feels Singapore's location too will have a big part to play in the success of this fair.
He says: 'I am confident of Singapore's ability to emerge as the hub for contemporary art in the Asian region. Singapore has a lot of advantages, right from its location and its infrastructure to its understanding of what is happening in the contemporary art world.'
He also feels the time is right for a major art fair here. And he speaks from experience.
Apart from being the former director of Art Basel and the creator of Art Basel Miami Beach, he also has a strong Asian connection.
In 2006, he helped create a new international art fair in Shanghai. Called ShContemporary, it attracted 35,000 visitors with its very first edition in 2007 and has emerged as one of the largest art events in the Asia-Pacific region.
He says: 'I felt this was the right time to set up an art fair here because a lot has changed. China and India are merely the beginning. There are lots more interesting developments happening in countries such as Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand.
'So what we are creating is an event that will serve as a platform to show the entire world what is going on in Asia. In terms of significance, some people may dub it the Art Basel of Asia but I can assure you that contentwise, it will not be a copy.'
Beyond the numbers, such as the number of people the fair is likely to attract and the revenue it will generate, he feels the fair will be an important platform bridging the Eastern and Western art worlds.
'It is not just about the bottom-line. I am more interested in the dialogue such an event generates and how that dialogue furthers the cause of art,' he says.

Ni3lS June 26th, 2010, 11:38 AM The pool looks so sick. I read an article about it this morning in the Dutch newspaper. There was a picture of a guy swimming in the 150m long swimming pool, and it looked like if you'd too close to the border you'd fall of the building lol. And you saw skyscrapers in the background. So incredibly cool! This hotel is a masterpiece. Also the new recordholder in terms of the most expensive hotel ever built in the world. A hotel in Abu Dhabi was the recordholder, with 2bln$. I think this hotel cost like 4,5bln$
redstone June 26th, 2010, 07:46 PM There's a casino, theatre, shopping mall and convention centre in the podium blocks.

Wynn Las Vegas cost US$2.7 billion to construct. This project cost US$5.7 billion
To compare, Burj al Arab (US$1.6 billion) or Burj Khalifa (US$1.5 billion)
inno4321 June 26th, 2010, 09:14 PM what a amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ni3lS June 26th, 2010, 10:32 PM Burj Khalifa 1.5bln$? I don't think so, it has to be more expensive than that
