Those projects are truly magnificent; have any been built or are any currently under construction? I sure hope so...

All look fantastic. Especially the University of Thessaly complex and Palamas square.

The one in Kifissias by Vikelas I haven't seen it though, and the same applies with the 9-storey masterpiece for Peiraios street. Also, I think that we should add here the building of the Bayer pharmaceutical company in Amaroussiou-Kifissias and Sorou roads (completed) and the municipality of Peristeri building which is under construction. The same applies for the Thessaloniki Municipality building which posesses a significant post-industrial design.

In general, it would seem that there are many significant municipal buildings that are either recently completed or are under construction. People does not know about the Cholargos Municipal building which is in Perikleous street in Cholargos suburb, it is completed and is a jewel with a large auditorioum hall used as municipal theatre, very good yards and in proximity to the Cholargos Shopping Centre which is also a small, yet ranks amidst the most successful shopping centres in Greece.

Other than that, these buildings show that there is still a flame that burns in the chest of many contemporary Greek architects. Why not turn it into a real fire?

Yes actually...but I m afraid that after 200 years the biggest project in Greece will be still the Calatrava roof.....

Well, Skaros my friend, those are still just architectural renderings from Anaparastasis company. You can find more info about the projects in anaparastasis.com. To my knowledge those are still visions, but in their site you can find many other sketches that have been build and are well known. Lets hope that something similar will happen for those. Let me also mention that those are mostly 2003-2004-2005 ideas, so we can wait a bit more.

Hmmm, call me over-critical but I'm not overly impressed by any of those. 'Close but no cigar' best describes my feelings. Spain does all this so much better.

hmmm surprise surprise....finally something interesting....i'm talking about the office project almost complete..i actually like the design.....it's not bad...i find it beautiful..with some nice renderings it will be very nice....in my opinion definitely better when compared to Nobel museum or the Athens stock exchange....:ohno::no:,which could probably be quite good for an office building...but not a stock exchange..........

Very nice projects but not of a scale equivocal to the size and significance of Athens.

The office building in Peiraios is excellent and so are the ferry docks.

I must agree......there is nothing here that blows me away...most schemes appear to play it very safe, lack daring and vision.

We can do better.

the office building is excellent its a type of modern architecuter i like compared to the rest it has character , the others are fine but that one i really like i have a weak spot for domed buildings :) , this should be the example in greek citys i think the other new ones just look faceless dont know how to describe it.

Actually, I love both the office buildings and the naval dock ferries.

While I entirely agree that the Athens area needs a modern high-rise disitrict, maybe in Marousi or Elaionas, as well as some high-caliber buildings in the city core, the Athens valley also needs countless newer (and lower-profile) mid-rise buildings of 4-8 stories, to replace ugly existing ones, particularly in densely-built areas away from the historic center like Peireos Avenue. And while I'm not terribly impressed with the police headquarters, the office buildings on the other hand are very good. We can't have every building in Athens be a high-caliber Calatrava design. Only certain buildings, like the Stock Exchange, should have a design that stands out and is world-famous (unfortunately, this didn't happen with the stock exchange). These envisioned office buildings incorporate timeless features into their designs (like terracotta, golden ratio rectangle windows, granite/stone exterior). Such buildings may not be very impressive alone, but they perfectly complement a city. Note how one of the illustrations for the Peireos Avenue building shows how the completed building will look in its urban environment.

The next big Calatrava-like signature piece to be built in Athens will look fabulous surrounded by these lower-profile -but attractive- buildings. Remember, architecture is not just about the building itself; it's also about the building's urban environment. A city should be cohesive; logistically and aesthetically.

Most of the people here dont find'em mind blowing and i understand'em... but my opinion is that the title is misleading everybody to the wrong impression. You see... the title is visions of contemporary architecture while it should be concept ideas of architecture. There is a conciderable difference between'em. A vision is an idea that dears to push limmits, break taboos, argue with contmporary theories and is usualy planned for the far future. A concept is an idea that is following trends or even creating'em while it is planned to come to reality in a shorter term of time. So i totaly reccon that these are just concepts and not too bad actually concidering that they are "concepts".:) If they acctualy are visions then i think we are miles behind.:bash:

^^ Excellent point!

We're on the same wavelength. These are not high-profile buildings. They are just average lower-profile buildings, like office buildings. Every building can't be a Calatrava-like or Renzo Piano-like signature piece. These lower profile buildings are meant to complement their urban surroundings. They're not meant to impress on their own. That doesn't mean I like all these designs. But the two office buildings are quite good!

^^ you said it Mister... although exept the Omega city and the west Athens towers, i havent seen any "VISIONS" and by that i mean high profile projects.
I wanna point out, that as Hellenes , as a society, we have to think about the future and not only the present. Our characteristic is think of today and f..k tomorow. Im telling ya all... A country with no visions will always be in debt to other bigger ones and never meet propsperity based on its own people and achievements. Im so tired to see people at my age look progressive on the outtside but still be the same Greek as their parents were(politexnio generation).
We are digging our graves here...gaah::wallbash:

Is there any website that includes all the Greek architectual visions or contemporary ideas? A governments website or a national organization maybe? exept the www.Greekarchitects.gr...

MetroGuardian
November 19th, 2007, 01:51 PM
If you are searching for official websites:
You can try www.heliarch.gr and www.sadas-pea.gr but they are not by any means exhaustive (and not well-designed).
Also this website
http://www.culture2000.tee.gr/ATHENS/ENGLISH/main2.html
contains the most important contemporary visions in Athens for the last century

And if you are interested in something unofficial check this :D :

^^ lol im allways checking this one but the lack of skyscraper news is bringing me down a bit..:ohno:.The first two were prety miserable as websites but fortunately there are some info there. The third one is a decent one with a lovely intro and lots of visual content...loved it...thank you MetroGuardian... In the future i hope we will add the new parliament to this thread as an inspired concept / vision building(can't wait to see the first renderings and wishing be something like the berlin's dome)...i hope...
