r you seriously saying the emirates is da luz rip off, everything in emirates is done to a higher and better quality then da luz, just compare the pitch

Quite right. After all some stadiums are bound to look similar. It's purely because de luz was such an original design that people are slagging this one off: due to the three tiers and sloped corners. This stadium will be one of the worlds best when finnished and better than Benfica's.

Everybody agrees that Arsenal get's the upgraded version of the Benfica stadium?

No, Estadio looks better and has the better atmosphere.

No, Estadio looks better and has the better atmosphere.

Spot on Tocino, Estadio does indeed have a better atmosphere than the Emirates, infact the Emirates has been eerily quiet all season, i mean, even on matchdays!!

Hard to say, the sloping roof really does impact on the otherwise pleasing aesthetics of Emirates, however the sponsors slogans on the seats of da luz also cheapens the appearance of that stadium somewhat. When I watched Liverpool get pumped by Benfica in this seasons Champions League, I was mightily impressed with the stadium.

Will I be as impressed with Emirates when it is full of spectators and hosting a game?

Not likely. The roof will have more of a negative impact than different coloured seats occupied by Portuguese arses. And will more than likely obscure camera angles and affect the continuity/community of the spectator ring (not sure which is more appropriate, whatever makes more sense to you).

So from the armchair fan's point of view, da luz is currently coming out on top.

Funny how its only the Arsenal supporters who are claiming people are jealous. Benfica fans seem less concerned about jealousy... maybe they are more secure because they are confident their stadium is the 'original and best' ?

well there are going to be 41 camera positions in the ground so i very much doubt there will be any obstructions! Also the view is only diminshed by the sloping roof in the top seats, most of the people in the upper tier will have excellent views, only those at the very top will have reduced views, and even then there will be no pitch restriced views and the bowl nature of the stands will mean huge views left and right like http://www.**************************/emirates6/image014.html

Well, judging by that photo, I cannot see what those 'critics' are banging on about obstructing views.

Even if you are sitting at the very top tier of the side stands, you should still get a fairly good view of at least 90% of all the fans sitting around you- that is at least 54,000.

If you are sitting at the terrace-ends, I imagine the roof will not dip as much and you can see everyone.

The noise should be deafening however

I thought it was common knowledge that they were a feeder club of sorts for Arsenal, and it was their responsibility to scout Africa for Arsenal, even if the players did not end up at the Ivory Coast Academy, Arsenal were to be made aware of any promising talent. (Arsenal do have a few Africans in their squad now).

I guess I got my wires crossed, I do that sometimes

Well, I think if we are found guilty it is unlickely that we will be excluded from the Champions League. Sepp Blatter has told us that he is in no position to conclude what should be done to punish guilty clubs. I think we're innocent and have not commited a crime. Like I said, the media needed to sell themselves by including the "Champioins League expulsion" thing to sell papers. A small fine isn't going to affect a club with a £100 cash reserve and a £50 million increase of revenue starting in August PA.

But surely you don't think Arsenal are the only team doing this sort of thing, would you be suprised if united are doing the same with Antwerp or Chelsea with corinthians/PSV. I loved the idea that is was a 'secret deal'. Why would you ever sign a contract if it was secret? Also every club has feeder clubs, this is how football works, Amramovich sponsors CSKA Moscow, who played Chelsea in the champions league yet fifa found nothing wrong with that so the chance of a problem between arsenal and a 2nd division beligian club they will never play is hardly an issue.

They are playing some videos of construction of the emirates this week on arsenal.com, yesterday was them putting in the north brigde, all very impressive but i couldnt really have cared less about a bridge, show me new pictures of it!!

The Arsenal website has been very poor on updates, written stories or photographs, they may as well not bother. Oh sorry, they don't , they may have got the stadium right, but not on keeping fans and others who are interested informed.

It is very much in their interest to get as many people visting their website for advertising alone.

Look at photos taken from the top tier and you'll see that large portions of the stadium are obscured by the roof. I am quite certain that far less than 90% of the stadium will be viewable from the top of the top tier.

As to the noise, I'm sure the atmosphere will be decent for the big games but there's no reason to expect that the atmosphere will be any better for the majority of games - especially with so many prawn sarnie seats at the new stadium! It's the fans that make the atmosphere. Not the stadium.

Well, will have to see when the first few matches are being played. I am sure the fans will give accurate feedback and I still reckon 90% plus, how do you know previous pictures were not taken from seat level or even the roof?

Regarding atmosphere- this stadium wasn't built for atmosphere, it was built to accomodate more fans. Who cares whether or not they will be shouting for 90 minutes. MCG holds 100,000 aussies, because cricket is popular, not because they want to scream the place down.

I bet its just a chance for aussies to catch up with mates, drink a few beers and have a barbi on a nice sunny day. :)

The MCG along with most major cricket grounds in Australia, have expanded & grown due to the popularity of Australian Rules Football. Though cricket is popular, the grounds have not expanded due to that sport as only a handful of international games are scheduled each year (in summer).

Plus if it is energy saving, that means it would give of less heat, therefore prolonging the fitting.

Yes, a full 90 Minutes rather than abandon the Stadium like you did at the end of the 2004/2005 season after yet another club wins the League title on your turf. Shameful Support.

Funny becuase it seems you can't understand that United spent £40 Million on 8,000 prawn sarnie seats just this year. Old Trafford is like a graveyard on matchdays anyway, filled with Londoners aswell. It's not like Arsenal fans have an option to have seats or not. I think the majority of Arsenals genuine support would much rather stand on a terrace only expending £5 a game.

Race you back to London???

Can everyone stop this constant petty club bickering that keeps de-railing the thread, if you wanna talk crap about each other's teams there are plenty of other websites out there for that kinda thing, but this is an architecture site, and this particular thread is concerned only with the Emirates stadium!

Anyway, just looked on the webcam and I'm glad to see that a vast majority of the bottom tier seating has now been installed, they should be installing the last seats over these next few days, so it doesn't look like they have an awful lot more to do really. I also noticed that they appear (could be wrong here) to have taken the covers off some sections of seating, cus some areas now look bright red.....strange,

Being an energy efficient stadium was key in the design criteria. Whether this will have energy efficient floodlights, I am not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if it had.

Ah it was nothing really, just had to sneak into the stadium in desguise, knock a security guard unconscious, take a few snap shots, then leg it the hell outa there....well, actually, I'd love to take the credit, but I was actually just uploading the pics onto this thread from the great web page that Diaby posted ealier on, which he got from ScouserDave.

This kind of successful stadium building should inspire the likes of Liverpool, Everton, Birmingham and possibly a few other clubs to really start committing to building new stadiums of their own in the near future, once they see how Arsenal benefit from theirs!

To quote Highbury Souljah, I would agree.
Tobe fair, this is the sort of view you would have got in the lower tiers of the East/West/Northbank Stands. Sure you cannot see the whole stadium, but this is taken right at the very back afterall. It shouldn't diminish the atmosphere one bit.

I'd apply now as I think there are lot's more benefits to be had for members if they join before June the 22nd. For some reason though I am not sure.

Check online, I got my red membership recently and they are advertising heavily at the moment.

Jack Rabbit Slim

It may not be the most mind bogglingly original and unique stadium in the world, but it still looks dam fine!! If you think about it, most stadiums round the world look similar to one stadium or another, there are only so many ways you can make a football stadium look wholly new and uncomparable. It has vague similarities to Da Luz, but nothing to get in a fuss about, and certainly nothing to suggest it is just a 'copy'. Da Luz is a great stadium, and so is Ashburton Grove, both have similar charachteristics, but both are equally different and varied in many ways. So this talk about it being a 'ripp off' is just coming off sounding like bitter rantings from people who have an agenda against the club! And I'm a Man U supporter for heavens sake! :)

It will make a fine addition to the England 2018 World Cup!!

If you would count that a tier then Real Madrid has 5 as wel as Barcelona but well, see discusion three tier stadium, it is a discusion if this stadium has 3 or 2.

I meant the first four tier stadium in england. And it has four, you can count them. Also I find this original argument very odd, people are comparing it to da luz correctly, yet da luz is in portugal. For an English stadium this is quite original, very different to the traditional square stadium. Yes it can be compared to a stadium in a random country, all stadia can, but for english stadia it is quite original.

My point is that when Wembley is (finally) finished it will be the best stadium in the world.

The fact that you compare Sir Robert McAlpine to multiplex is a bit of a joke. Wembley is a 90,000 seater stadium that had to be built after knocking down a stadium with also the cost of the whole project being £757m now compare that to Ashburton Grove. A 60,000 seater (30,000 less than Wembley) stadium on land that was coverd by small buildings and the project costs £357m (£400m less than wembley) I personaly find it a joke that you say Sir Robert McAlpine are better than multiplex just because its on time. Both projects are totally different in size and what had to be done before building work even starts. Also AB is actually 2 years behind schedule.

1. Size and cost does not make a stadium better than the other. Da luz costs less than Emirates and some of you think its better. WHL is smaller that Highbury but you believe the former is better.

2. Emirates is not behind schedule because of Sir Robert Mcalpine, its because people that owned business on the ground and people that lived in the area delayed the process as they were unhappy with certain things concerning the stadium.

Wrong. I wasn't saying anything along the lines of that. What I was manily saying was that Sir Robert McAlpine had an easier job to do. Wembley is the biggest stadium in the world (in size that is not capacity) where as the Emirates is a 60,000 seater stadium. Its like trying to say that whoever built the Empire Statebuilding were on time etc in comparison to those who did Sears. What saying is that Sir Robert McAlpines job was a lot easier than Multiplex's because of the difference of the projects.

James21
June 26th, 2006, 02:15 PM
But thats irrelevant, no one is saying they should have taken the same amount of time to build. However, Multiplex made a commitment to complete the stadium by a certain date and failed, McAlpine succeeded. Wembley is more complicated, in which case they should have left more time for it to be built, also their issues with the steel contractor etc were their problem, not the FAs so it is their fault! The Emirates is only late because of planning permission, in terms of construction it is a few weeks ahead, while wembley is months behind, and possibly anything up to a year.

I think McAlpine have done a wonderful job, there were a number of difficult construction problems here too, such as the railway tracks on either side so to overcome all this is very impressive.

No offense mauritius gunner, and I don't want to start an arguement with you here that will drag the thread off topic, but your last comment was a load of bollox! Plain and simple!

Btw, when is DB's testimonial??

22ND JULY !!

By the way, which part was a load of bollocks?

1)Multiplex is a national disgrace, in spite of being Australian, because it was the FA's decision to use them.

Bobby McAlpine, delivered on time and on budget once work was allowed to start. I think, for example, the British Olympic Association can take heed of this and would be right to award big contracts to Sir Robert McAlpine for the 2012 games, as I think they a capable of delivery.

2) Wembleys £757m price tag is attributed to cost over-run's, on a project originally budgetted for half that amount. IT IS a waste of money, siphoned out of the FA

3) Since this is an architectural forum, I think many can agree, and have, that I am not talking sh*t here. If you don't agree, take your quibble to a fan's forum where you can argue to your hearts content about anything you like

1. Carrick was man of the match
2. We're through
3. Multiplex are Aus.

1) Carrick? Man of the match? Your having a laugh!
Aaron Lennon played better than him, for only 3 minutes

2) Yes, I know Multiplex are Australian, I mean in the context of being awarded the contract- a national disgrace

3) Wembleys price tag is attributed to huge cost over-run's, plus they are over 1 year behind schedule on delivery. As a result, Wembley costs almost double its original estimate, back in 1999. The comparison is not a joke, if I was Lord Coe, I would award big projects for 2012 to Sir Bobby anyday, and yes, I think they would have done a better job of Wembley.

chester84
June 26th, 2006, 06:28 PM
I think every contractor would have overun in terms of money/time if they took on Wembley due to the issues Multiplex have been faced with during the construction, some their own fault and some just bad luck. It's just unfeasable to think a project on the scale and complexity of Wembley would run smoothly from start to finish. Thats why the contract was turned down by Laing O'Rouke, most of the 'bigger' contractors weren't comfotable with the financial risk the FA put on contractor in the contract.

Sir Robert McAlpine have done a great job on Emirates, but they have been lucky in the fact that nothing has happened to take them off schedule, its a very complex project due to access and small size of the site but there is definately less risk involved for a contractor in building Emirates than a project under constant scrutiny like Wembley.

Also how come DBs testimonial is now 54,000? wierd number, thought it was 40,000 due to the fact Emirates doesn't have the appropriate licence yet? sources anyone?

Cheers for the info. It's a good job too, it would've been a shame if only 40,000 were allowed to go to the game. I could see arsenal filling the new Wembley for DBs testimonial. Take a look at the right hand side of the pic below, it looks like they are spelling England with the covers on the seats. That article from the greens is full of a lot of shit frankly, one councillor trying to make a fuss, but the previous council have put in all the work, luckily the recent local election results werent a few years ago or this stadium would never have been built.

It ignores the 000s of new homes, and although the jvc centre may have been closed there are so many new facilities (community and sporting) that are opening it more than makes up for it, this has regenerated a whole area of london, with a state of the art waste facility instead of an old one, and new housing, shops and jobs, so she can shove it.

"So im driving home from work last night listening to talk sport, and a advert comes on... the short of it is that a company are giving away Arse*** season tickets (club level) with every property they sell.... are the goons having problems shifting these tickets? Arse*** are such sell outs...."

I thought that the arse had sold out alll the ST already.

James21
June 27th, 2006, 12:44 PM
They have, but a number of the properties built around the area have access to season tickets (once they are finished) all it means is that the tickets are currently used by someone else but if you buy one of the flats you have the option to buy a season ticket. I dont think they are club level, they are general tickets, cos there is already a 300+ waiting list for club level. These tickets are part of the 50% allocation of new tickets for islington residents, which will be used as general sale i would imagine until people actually buy the flats and then decide if they want the st or not.

The main new allocation has been sold out, and there are still 20k+ i believe on the waiting list, so it wont be an issue.

Well, in every stadium there has to be another exit on pitch level other than the player’s tunnel for emergencies as a safety measure and I guess that one is the Emirates. You will notice that in all bowl shaped stadiums in England e.g. Stadium of Light, Rebook, Walkers, St. Mary’s, etc etc there is that kind of tunnel which usually occupies one of the corners in the stadium and its usually wider than the players’ tunnel to allow space for emergency vehicles.

I have to say that am kinda disappointed about the lack of red at Emirates. Why on Earth is the HQ Building frakin greenish? It’s the HQ of Arsenal FC so red should be the major colour hittin ur eyes when u look at it. And if you look at the exterior of the stadium the only thing that is red as far as I’m concerned is the “Emirates Stadium” letters with masses of colourless bare concrete all over the place…and to see that the home team showers have a black background is even more disappointing…ok, maybe these colours make things look more posh as some would argue but we are talking about a football stadium for a football team so it should reflect the colours of that team as much as possible and I really don’t think that using red in the showers or in the HQ would have made them look ugly in anyway

There will be more than enough red once the seat covers are removed.

As to the exterior of the stadium, I like that they have left just bare concrete and glass, with only a mere splash of red for the signs. Red cladding on the exterior would have been horribly tacky and 1980's. And red paint would have been just tacky.

Blackburn 23/12 (xmas treat)

Looking at arsenal.com, it looks like they will be implementing a fair-price policy. With reduced ticket prices for family/junior members and a tiered-pricing band structure for games in the premiership. i.e., top clubs prices will be higher priced as compared with the rest.

This seems to me like a sensible policy and the way it should be going forward

They cant see all of the fans/tiers located opposite tp them.
Thats a bit of a shame.
But its still a greta stadium nevertheless.
Im looking forward to see the next CL-game on TV there

yeah looks great

But i have a question to the Arsenal fans
is it too red?
I thought Aresenal is red-white?
maybe som white seats would have been better?

As an Arsenal fan, I quite like the all-red seats.
I've always found the white-seat lettering a bit tacky.

Perhaps if it is a named-stadium, they cannot put the words Arsenal FC in?
In either case, I'm not bothered
