You can just see the crowd at the Emirates now - Mum, Dad and their two sons Nigel and Edward.

'Oh, lovely goal Nigel - yes dad, it was just like the one I scored on my Playstaion 2 last night - hahaha, yes, son, i'm sure it was'

'Hey daddy - yes son - that bad man behind me swore - I know son, ignore the ruffian, he shouldn't be allowed to watch the football now that it is a family game - yes dad, I love football, it's fun for all the family'

5 years later..........'Son, do you want to go to the football - no football is rubbish daddy, all the kids at the horse riding club don't like it anymore - ok son, we will move on to something else, something that is more trendy - yes daddy, I love you!'

Went on Friday to take a peak at the new ground while i was in London. First thought is just how much bigger the building is than Highbury. Its huge no doubt about it, thought the construction of the roof makes it look smaller than my local the Amsterdam arena for example, despite the larger capacity. The Amsterdam arena has a towering roof that extends high over the highest point of the back of the stands. Sounds great, looks imposing from outside, but it swallows every bit of noise the supporters generate. I'd be surprised if you'd find a single Ajax supporter who wouldn't prefer a more enclosed stadium rather than playing in the equivilant of a cathedral. If you see people naming the Amsterdam arena as one of their favourite stadiums then i'll guarentee you they are not Ajax regulars.

Anyway here are a couple of pics i took while i was there, i have more if anyones interested although its difficult to get decent shots from where i walked.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h165/ninkemfool/Dscf0289.jpg

I particularly liked the underside of the roof, very classy.

They were just finishing the lettering as i walked past.

You are right it was purely an exercise in self-indulgence I enjoyed the experience myself, yet it would be utterly tedious and of no interest or value to anyone else really. Strangely reminiscent of every one of your posts actually. :)

Anyways good pics, i think they give a good idea of why the concrete is good, it blends very well with the glass. You are right about it being huge, i think even those pics dont do it justice. you have to really walk by it to get a real feel! Anymore pics would be more than welcome!

Rangers faced similar restrictions when they played Villareal in the last 16 of the same tournament, but it didn't stop thousands more making the effort to travel. Maybe Rangers just have better fans than Arsenal?

They probably didn't expect quite so many Rangers fans for that game to turn up and consequently made precautions for the Arsenal game and imposed restrictions.

Considering you morsels had never made the CL knockout stages before, a general reflection of Scottish team performances in Europe in the whole, then it is hardly surprising that so many of you made a vain effort for the trip.

Yes, Rangers do have a phenomenal support, I must concede, but you are still a club of peasants by comparison and can whoop your arses anyday.

Bad support is Boro only bring about 300 fans to Old Trafford. Which is what they did last night, poor excuse for a football club. Leeds need to get back up so we can have abit of atmosphere.

I know that Celtic have the whole of the north stand, holds 25,000 so dont know what the other 5000 fans are coming up here for because there not gona see anything. Its not a like final or anything is it.

Quite suprised to see UTD the only team in the whole of the premiership to have them, seeing that almost all the spanish stadiums have them. I mean I thought the English Premiership which is one of the most followed leagues in the world, the stadiums will be up to date with technology. Hope to see Stamfordbridge, anfield, city of man, emirates & so on with these elec screen type boards.

Here in South Africa, the Wanderes cricket stadium in Joburg is the ONLY cricket stadium in the world to have that electric advertising boards. :)

The question was asked at the supporters forum last year

Will there be electronic advertising boards at the new stadium?

Yes there will be. For Champions League games, we will be using their static boards - our electronic boards will be the same dimensions as these so we will hopefully not lose any capacity because of this.

Here is the Link (http://www.arsenal.com/article.asp?thisNav=Fanzone&article=362047&Title=Supporters+Forum)

Also on the latest forum questions were asked about the Emirates hosting England matches, the plans for the final game at highbury, statues outside the new ground, family enclosed sections and more

a couple of interesting things from those fans forums. First, " The clock from Highbury will be somewhere outside the stadium" so as a kingd of meeting point which i think will be good

also there wont be a 20,000 match but a training day, like they have at highbury, and then im guessing bergkamp's testimonial then the first game, so that solves that!

We will be having a closing ceremony which will hopefully start at 5pm and last about an hour and half. We will probably have a marching band and also a large parade of legends and former managers, with an announcer on the pitch linking everything together. There will also be music and links between Highbury and Emirates Stadium, including displays on the pitch relating to our history at Highbury. The event will be covered on Arsenal.com, which will also have behind the scenes footage on the build up to the event. For the final game, there will be a commemorative programme which will have a replica of the programme produced for the first game at Highbury. There will also be an A-Z of Highbury publication that fans will have the option of buying with the programme.

We will emphasise that anybody who runs on the pitch at this game will be banned from Emirates stadium.

Cool.

Some cool stuff onthere.

What are everyones thoughts onthe 'Arsenal Anthem' that is to be played as the players walk out onto the pitch?

chester84

Sounds like itll be some event, just wish i was going! I think the Arsenal Anthem is a good idea, it will certainly add to the identity of the stadium. Although i hope it is done properly, and not some cheesey crap, something that has the same meaning to gunners as "you'll never walk alone" does to liverpool fans so that we can all sing, more likely shout to, before the game.

p.s. just had a look at the webcam and it looks like more seats are being added to the upper tier.

It is quite a nice stadium but i cant help wonder what the atmosphere will be like and will arsenal be able to fill 60,000 week in week out against teams like reading, portsmouth...etc. I also think selling the rights to the name of the stadium is a little low, tha name of the stadium should be something about the history of the club and not about which company pays the most money to have their name on the side. Typical Arsenal. Im supprised the rights wernt sold to a french company!

What is the cost of the stadium?

Yes it is very sad, and many clubs do need the money although i would hardly say arsenal need the money, if i supported arsenal i would be gutted that they have sold the naming rights, anyone have any details about how much arsenal are being paid for the naming rights?

90m, 8 years for the shirts, 15 years for the naming rights.

So is this the end of the maroon kit this season? I must admit, it's the best kit I've seen in a long, long time and it will be a shame to see it go. Especially for the red shirt with white sleeves, which is probably the tackiest, worst shirt in the league.

Anybody know?

Its not maroon, its burgundy, and yes, it is a 1 year top that will be binned at the end of this season. It was a one-off to mark Arsenal's last season at Highbury and although it took a wee bit of getting used to, it is by far and away their best strip I can remember.

The red and white will look tacky next year in comparison.

You are probably correct here, the seats do look slightly more redcurrent than the old scarlet. Perhaps they are going to go for a slightly nostalgic feel for the new home kit and blending redcurrent into the new strip gradually.

If Arsenal win the champions league maybe they should continue with the red current kit, or make the red part of thier traditional strip red current. If Werder can change the colour of their strip for winning the bundesliga why can Arsenal do the same for the CL. It could also be a homage to highbury.

Durbsboi

^^I doubt they will do it, cause they said it just for this season, cause when the first Arsenal team walked onto Highbury they wore those colours, hence for the final season there , the current team are wearing those colours, who knows, if Arsenal go back to the red & white, in 100 years time, when the build a new stadium, maybe the colours would have changed again & for the final season @ emirtes that Arsenal team will wear the Red & white :D

The seats currently have a plastic cover over them which is why they appear slightly duller and more 'Redcurrant', once the covers are off as far as I understand it they will be bright red.

I don't think that putting carpet in the restaurant is a good idea, with the amount of people walking over it, and also spilling food and drink over it I can't imagine it lasting more than a year before it needs replacing. Some sort of wood or marble or even some cheaper tiling would have been much more appropriate, it isn't even that much more expensive these days when you consider the replacement and maintenance costs of carpet.

Ok. The Arsenal Ladies are a football team called... are you ready for this... Arsenal! Another interesting fact about them is that they're all female (allegedly). This is where, and I'm completely shooting in the dark here, the name Arsenal Ladies comes from.

Another interesting fact is Freddie Ljungberg is the first person in the world to play for both his club's male and female sides.

Ashley Cole has also been asked to appear but was rumoured to be frightened off at the thought of getting a kiss from a female if he scored.

I thought they were freezing the prices of the tickets for the first year so they should be the same price as Highbury this season. Obviously some types of seats are completely new and never existed in Highbury (such as Club Level) so they have a new price.

In the recent club members meeting the price of tickets were discussed and the club said that they would rise about 2 or 3% each season.

I agree though that the price of tickets at Arsenal is very expensive, along with most of the premiership clubs.

Exactly. If Spurs were leaving the lane and wanted to celebrate like they got a draw at highbury, I certainly wouldn't criticise them.

Or wanted to celebrate the fact that they have not lost back to back games in the league something that they haven't done since...1950/51

Diaby stop the bullshit all I said was that it was over the top a bit thats all. And when I was "celebrating a point at the Library" I was infact celebrating Tottenham getting Europe via the League for the first time in 23 years (well would be a lot shorter if it wasn't for the Hysel ban) thats all I was a bit over the top...oh well who cares? no one.

Anyone know if the Video Screens, shown in the media clip, are actually going to be a feature at the new Stadium. It looks to me like they are where the 'Arsenal' and 'Emirates' Logos are placed.
Plus I was reading the planning brief for the new Stadium and the description of the areas where the concrete is most prominent went something like this 'Will be covered with a wire meshing, something similar to what was used on Norman Fosters Berlin Reichstag Development and will house a spectacular lighting array.

James21

ah well i think those were for novelty value only, the fact they have put logos up means i doubt it. Also the local residents had enough complaints about having logos so i would think they would go mad at video screens!!

Kool, looks like they've installed quite a few more seats...though why are some covered up differently then others? With some you can see that they are clearly red seats, with others the covers are just white...at least, I think they are covers and not the actual seats themselves...?

I think the top tier is now basically done, except for two corners where they are installing the big screens but 85% done from the look of the pics.

I think the covering is just dependent on when they put them in, they seem to have a light covering when they install them and then later they put on a heavier white one, but they dont seem all that bothered about it, club level is still all red!

But with that done hopefully its time for the lower tier soon!

All fans have good singing tbh. Arsenal were well known for their singing but after 2000 Highbury became known as the Library but of late they've started to sing but only because it was the last season at Highbury IMO. Last season they beat Liverpool 3-1 played fantastic football and instead of singing their lungs out about how good their team played footbal etc they just sat there silent letting Liverpool fans continue the celebrations of getting to the CL final.

mauritius gunner
May 15th, 2006, 01:06 PM
It dips towards the centre of the stands. Many have argued that this isn't the cleverest of designs but should still provide for a fantastic atmosphere because it is meant to emphasise the acoustics

The reason why Highbury was called the library was because of the big gaps in the corners and the carrying wind. As emirates will be enclosed all round, I think we won't have this problem

Ventura1
May 15th, 2006, 02:33 PM
2005, it's an 8 year shirt sponsorship and 15 year stadium sponsorship for £100 million. Here is a statement from the Arsenal website...

"Arsenal Football Club has today signed the biggest club sponsorship agreement in English football history with Emirates Airline, in an agreement worth £100 million.

The agreement provides the Dubai-based international airline with naming rights to Arsenal's new £357 million stadium. The new 60,000 seat stadium will be known as Emirates Stadium with immediate effect and for the next 15 years.

In addition, Emirates will take over as the Club's title sponsor - including 'Fly Emirates' shirt sponsorship - for eight years, starting from the 2006/07 season, the first playing season in the new Emirates Stadium."

It's a good long term deal that was essential for the building of the stadium.

James21
May 15th, 2006, 03:11 PM
you wont really be able to work out the value of the deal until the shirt deal is re-negotiated in 8 yrs time, because i dont think anyone really knows what the weighting is stadium v shirts

They make it sound good when in reality it is a paltry sum compared to the cash Man United and Chelsea are getting for shirt sponsorship.
Man United signed a deal with AIG for £56.5m for 4 years, = £14m per year just for their name on the shirt. Chelsea get £11m per year.

Arsenal (based on the 8 years of shirt sponsorship) get £12.5m per year, but this deal has naming rights to the stadium thrown in for 15 years!

So naming rights and shirt sponsorship is worth less than Man United's shirt deal alone. Not exactly the best deal for Arsenal, or maybe just reflective of the fact that Arsenal are not really a big club.

James21
May 15th, 2006, 05:32 PM
well it is lower, but when you compare it with other stadium sponsorship deals it is very large, and actually it is a front-loaded deal so helps with paying for the stadium.

The deal provides 9m a year 2004-2012 so helps finance while it is being built, and then pay off the load much quicker, with then less in the final years. The shirt sponsorship starts in 2006 at £5m a year. While it isnt a lot, added to the £3.3m for the naming rights (which is much bigger than any other uk stadium) it's a decent sum. The long term nature of it means it provides more money earlier so is actually more useful.

Yes it doesnt add up to utd but no one really does, chelsea's is irrelevant because it is just a company trying to cash in, it has no relevance to club size. It was also a £3m increase every year from the 02 deal so even better. In 8yrs they will renegotiate the shirt deal, probably for a hell of a lot more, while in 15 they could re-name the stadium or re-sell the rights.

The mainb point is that it was crucial to recieve such a big sum (a third of the stadium cost) before moving into it, and the front loading means the debt can be paid off quicker, and then post 2010 offset by the sale of highbury.

Ventura1

Yeah right, Arsenal are a small club are they? Well they have done very well in recent years then. In the last three years we have won 3 major trophies (1 League, 2 FA Cups) compared to Man Utd's 0. We're competing in the final of the biggest club competition in the world and you're trying to tell me we're not a big club! Your timing on making ludicrous comments could not be worse in my opinion.

Of course Man Utd can attract a bigger sponsorship deal, that may have something to do with the fact that they (along with Real Madrid) are the biggest club in the world, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work that one out!

Name another football club in the world who has splashed out as much as £360m in one single project, no one. This is not the work of a small club

At the end of the day, Arsenal have always been a massive club. We held assets in the city for years and have got the financial muscle as well as the support to fill the stadium, drawing from over 4 million people within a ten mile radius.

All this "we're a massive club" talk is going to get you no where. All he'll do is remind of this and taunt you about that which will most probaly be little things you really shouldn't care about.

Also there is no point in trying to crow about putting £360m into a project because if it wasn't for the sponsorship deals and the bank being persuaded that Ashburton Grove was a good investment then the whole thing wouldn't have happened. Also you haven't "always been a massive club" because the reason why Woolwich Arsenal left SE18 in the first place was because Millwall stole all your fans.

The centre tier are club level seats, incorporating business lounges, seating and suites in possibly the biggest revenue generator for the entire stadium. The media suites are bound to be state of the art. No expense has been spared in this ground.

You seem to be trying awfully hard to convince me of the merits of Emirates. Re: the Ibrox reference - Main Stand was built in the 20s with "no expense spared", and most recently refurished in the 90s again with "no expense spared". The other 3 stands are also fairly old - pre-dating the Taylor report infact. At the time of construction they were also designed and built by the best stadium planners in the world, with "no expense spared".

Had Rangers decided to neglect stadium redevelopment and allow their ground to fall into disrepair in the manner Arsenal did, basing my opinion on what Rangers have done previously, I am sure Ibrox too would have been re-built (today, long overdue) with "no expense spared."

So your cheap and needless dig at Ibrox was not only unwarranted, but also unfounded. And you didn't answer my question: is Emirates wifi enabled or not. And if you are going to attempt to answer again please provide details and a source.

compared to the sort of things you have been posting i'm the stephen hawking of this forum.

"allow their ground to fall into disrepair in the manner Arsenal did"

do you know nothing about why the stadium is being built? It had nothing to do with highbury being in disrepair, the clock end and north bank are both less than 20yrs old, and in fine condition. Unfortunately there is no room for expansion, which is hardly the clubs fault, you cant exactly beat geography now can you? The fact that the east and west stands are remaining and being turned into apartments show they are still in good condition, even being listed they dont need much done in terms of repair so its a ridiculous comment.

As for wifi I have no idea why this is important, its a football stadium. However, considering it is going to have top class conference facilities I would imagine those areas which are going to be used will have full wifi access, hardly the major selling point of a stadium though is it. Im sure most fans, even those in club level, would have no interest in wacking out their laptop during a match to check their e-mail.

er....I dunno if you've failed to notice the aesthetic merits of your own stadium, but its few and far between; all this veneration of Ibrox is wasted flannel; its a rather non-descript red brick post-industrial facade with 3 very neglected cumbersome sheds. Yes the interior of Archibald Leitch's stand is very beautiful, the exterior though is mediocre; infact Leitch is rather overated on these forums by a certain few.
Lets not forget that Arsenal demolished his parochial vision of mass spectatorship with something far more elegant and progressive. hmm...disrepair eh? can you qualify that statement in any way without obviously resorting to your usual crass pictograms?

Ibrox is a fine, high capacity UEFA certified 5 star stadium.
Highbury is not.

Arsenal are having to move from their stadium, Rangers are not.

That is because, you need a ground capacity of near 50,000+ to qualify for UEFA 5 star status. Highbury's capacity meant that this wasn't possible, nothing to do with the quality of stands or the facilities which were already first class.

Don't knock Highbury, it is already universally recognised as a supurb stadium. Irrespective of what you may think Bubomb/Socrates/Ivan the Terrible or whatever you choose to call yourself these days.

I know its you because you fell for my 'Ibrox' bait

Ivan Drago

I didn't fall for anything, I don't deny who I am. (Socrates btw) And Highbury is most definitely NOT universally recognised as a superb stadium.

Top 10 football stadiums in Britain http://skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=329332 (no mention of Highbury)

Now, considering the fact that England is bereft of superb football stadia (only one UEFA certified 5 star stadium and one 4 star stadium), the fact that Highbury made it onto no one's list shows that they clearly do not regard it as "superb", irrespective of what you may think, mauritius.

Anyway the important thing is that the emirates stadium is going to be, outside wembley, by far and away the best ground in the country, with the best facilities for everyone, as well as making a large amount of money for the club.

Take your blinkers off and look at who it is that brings that particular topic up - it is very rarely me. Other users take it in turns to "bait me" - thats how we keep getting back onto that topic.

eg
I know its you because you fell for my 'Ibrox' bait

Socrates and bubomb should just join a Rangers forum where they can talk all day long about how awesome Ibrox is.

We can do that here because almost every other poster seems determined to compare every other stadium to Ibrox. Check - theres loads of them doing it!

I'm not falling for any bait. I am merely correcting the misguided.
Does that make me an intellectual guy then?

You are right there. Having been to a few of those 4 and 5 star stadiums in other parts of Europe, the star ranking has little reflection on whether it is a great stadium. Many of them seem empty and have no soul. I think we have better stadiums in Britain, including unranked ones, than we realise, although those lists are mainly down to personal opinion and bias. Having been going to Highbury for the best part of 20 years now, i'd say the things that let it down the most were not being able to fill the corners in and the clock end boxes being built at the wrong time (just before the Taylor report). I remember there being a model of the North Bank being connected to the East and West stands, but this was never realised due to building restrictions. It's a shame as I think i'd have prefered to stay there had it been big enough and made enough money. The current North Bank is a superb stand however, easily the best in the stadium for match day experience and facilities. The East and West stands are unique but needed a bit more attention but I guess they hadn't bothered wasting too much money due to the planned move to the Emirates. I have 2 worries about the Emirates. Will it have the soul (feel) of Highbury and will it feel as intimidating to opposition as Highbury was? (cue library jokes!)
