Leeds No.1 May 27th, 2006, 11:24 PM Lumiere for height but I think Criterion has a more original design and fills a better part of the city, as well as binding the fabric of the existing centre better- Lumiere is just further extensions of the centre.
Accura4Matalan May 27th, 2006, 11:35 PM Lumiere.
El_Greco May 27th, 2006, 11:39 PM criterion
Talisker May 28th, 2006, 12:30 AM Criterion is far superior to Lumiere.
I find it hard to get exited by lumiere at all. It doesn't have the 'wow factor' of criterion that will create an original postcard skyline for leeds.

ditto Criterion is mutch better.
although the hight of Lumiere is good!
i would love both but if i had to pick it would be Criterion
Da Bomb May 28th, 2006, 01:21 AM Criterion by far!
Fred2 May 28th, 2006, 10:03 AM An interesting but pointless poll.
Why pointless ?
Because
1. our deliberations will have absolutely no influence on what is finally built
2. But in any case, should we not wait for a verdict as to which building is the better if and when either, or both, are built – perhaps in 5-8 years time?
No doubt you will again accuse me of being the resident curmudgeonly realist.
:)
Skychaser 2005 May 28th, 2006, 11:48 AM They will both be fantastic additions to the skyline. But as a true skychaser, it has to be Lumiere because it is the taller of the two.
di Livio May 28th, 2006, 12:48 PM Criterion edges it for me, but I don't think it's a case of one 'versus' the other: the combined effect of both sets of towers will provide the real 'wow factor'.

Leeds No.1 May 28th, 2006, 02:43 PM Lumiere will start next year, if planning permission is granted. Criterion seems to change every day- possibly next year; but one thing to be sure about is that every second is closer to its construction! Well. If it gets built.

leeds the best May 28th, 2006, 02:46 PM i hope so
leeds city council drag their feet
but if someone here could find out it wwuld be good
Leeds No.1 May 28th, 2006, 02:48 PM Im not sure- sometime over the summer. Keep checking the decisions list on the council site. I think if we do miss its announcement it wont be long until we find out as I suspect they will be keen to start construction.

Fred2 May 28th, 2006, 03:00 PM what makes you think it will take 5-8 years time fred2. i thought if they both get the go ahead, construction would start next year
My obvious answer to you is that time will tell !
Credulous May 28th, 2006, 07:33 PM Lumiere will start next year, if planning permission is granted. Criterion seems to change every day- possibly next year; but one thing to be sure about is that every second is closer to its construction! Well. If it gets built.
Like the way you covered all your bases there....
jimbo May 28th, 2006, 09:05 PM Criterion Place gets my vote.
The location is superior, its a central site and will create a real pinnacle for the city. The two towers seem to correspond to each other much better than Lumiere. The design (well the first design we saw, don't know what the redesign will be like), was and is still much more exciting and adventurous. Truely unique IMO.
That said, we've not really seen enough of Lumiere...... three renders, both rather small, not elevations or perspectives from other major angles (as Criterion Place has). I don't think it's site is anywhere as central and city centre core focused as Criterion. On the plus side, it'll block out much of West Point. Mantle with aplomb!
That said, I'd still score 6-7 out of 10, whilst Criterion hits the 9 out of 10.
From what we know Lumiere is clearly ahead in the running for which actually will see the light of day.
As di Livio says, if both are built, then they will complement each other and certainly give the city another element of 'wow'.
LeedsLad May 28th, 2006, 11:33 PM Great pics DiLivio - is that the first time we've seen those pics? Where they from?
Fred - I just wondered how people perceived the 2 schemes? I think (as it seems most do) that Criterion is most impressive - I just wondered if others were swayed by the superior height of Lumiere.
It seems fairly likely Lumiere is to go ahead - and I really have my fingers crossed for Criterion (a reappearance at 60 stories would make my skyscraper year).
Rob May 29th, 2006, 11:14 AM Good idea to have a poll on this.
based on the question of 'which is best', I've had to go for Lumiere on the overwhelming grounds that it appears much more feasible and I think much better thought out. Aesthetically, they are surprisingly similar, both very 'Simpsony' indeed, although Criterion looks better from some angles, they look similar from most viewpoints and the sloping tops look similar. However, if the over-intricate shape of Criterion makes it unaffordable to develop, that clearly makes Lumiere the 'best' in my opinion.
Talisker May 29th, 2006, 04:33 PM I just get the feeling that if lumiere was proposed for any other city outside of the Uk we'd be wondering what the big deal was. It's a case of seeing projects proposed for your area with tinted specs I guess. Fine, it's tall, but criterion has that distinctive shape that would enable people to look at a the skyline and say 'that's leeds'
Leeds No.1 May 29th, 2006, 05:14 PM If you look at most tall buildings, they tend not to have very exciting shapes. Criterion is one of the few exceptions.
Alphie May 29th, 2006, 06:41 PM I think we're getting slightly carried away with how original and distictive Criterion is. Have a look at diLivio's pictures, especially the second one, and you'll see that it is in fact just two fairly conventionally shaped towers (a bit like Lumiere in fact!) with bulges that complement each other. The majority of renders we have seen are from a particular angle which enhances the abstract shapes. From many views the two developments would look broadly the same.
The King May 29th, 2006, 09:23 PM i think that lumier is a fantastic building project and its not just that it is placed in leeds this is an absolutly fantastic project but criteron place is just slightly better imo but there is not much between the two projects IMO. these 2 projects would grace any world city there are of the highest standard and the scale will be breath taking with out a doubt.
Rob May 30th, 2006, 10:01 PM One point to add, the released images of Lumiere don't do it justice, from the numerous images ands models at the exhibition, it looks much more tall, slender and grand than the current images portray.
