BiggySmalls April 27th, 2003, 08:10 AM 8.5/10. It's a lovely variety of nicely-sized buildings. I really like how the elevated freeways weave between the buildings. It gives the buildings and skyline a sense of scale. Osaka just needs an attractive, reflective glass tower that makes a focal point. It would have to be the tallest in the city though. Other than that, great-looking place!!~

So many nice tall buildings, and a lot of density. But a city of this size should do better, and deserves better. Seems to have a couple of clusters of highrises, all of them having nice height and a nice profile. As someone said already, Osaka needs something of a defining point, and unlike WTC needs to be in the a core/ the core.

JDRS February 22nd, 2005, 07:26 PM Amazing density. The skyline is what I expect from Japan, but good nonetheless. The thing I like about Japanese buildings is the red lights they put on skyscrapers. I agree they need one or perhaps a few taller buildings centrally located near the current skyline to provide a focal point.
By the way, I know this isn't the right place to post this but why do some buildings in Japan have gaps in them. I heard it was something to do with allowing spirits to get to the sea or something, but I would appreciate it if someone could tell me why?

just imagine tokyo`s population its city alone is 8,5 million while osaka is 2,5mil.
then ofcrs osaka must b smaller city than tokyo in term of scale.but its quite dence and big for this pop.anyway,same with tokyo,osaka is very earthquake prone area too.(i think its probably all over japan)but esp in osaka even a fault is laying on densed area.althought one who get hit badly last tym on 1995 was kobe not osaka.
and also thay hav a height limit(most of big city in japan)so thay cant build super scraper like other asian country.and one more thing,during 60s and 70s,when there were no absolute technology 4 building scraper with earthquake proof construction,japan had built alot of low rise building(like thick building with about15 floor or,thin and only 10 floor or less etc..)in fact, even now,many of buildings you can find in dense area are those.
by the way,i heard there is a plan in osaka of building first 300m clas scraper in japan.is it true?

Osaka is my most favourite city in Japan, and I think it has a wonderful skyline and is a lot easier to get around in and have fun in than Tokyo. Like was said, Osaka is a smaller Tokyo (rather, Tokyo is a larger Osaka since Osaka was first).
As for skyscrapers, they're everywhere in Kita (especially) and Namba and Tennoji and now the waterfront, while the other districts are very dense urban low/mid rises. This is very similar to Tokyo: Shinjuku, Minato, and Shibuya with the skyscrapers, other districts with mid and low rise density. Osaka has the 3rd Tallest tower (Yoko being first, Tokyo Government being 2nd) in Japan and it's on the waterfront - doesn't that count?
To me, Osaka is prettier - since it is not as crowded and seems to be a bit more open design wise. Tokyo is just clutter everywhere to me, except near the Palace and government area. Osaka has a wonderful street culture and the openness makes the city much more pleasurable experience yet still having EVERYTHING like Tokyo does.
Osaka definitely deserves to be at least a 9 (I voted 9.5) because the ONLY thing it lacks is a supertall over 300M. But in all honesty, no city in Japan has a supertall - so ....??

Given its status as a top 10 (top5? ) gross metro product city core it is disappointing. Not bad. Just disappointing for an urban core of that status.

People are just rating pictures; obviously, having visited a place or lived there will change one's perception. Few people rating pics have ever visited Osaka. I'm willing to bet there is a correlation between rating and whether or not someone's been to Osaka or in general just likes Japan.
And of course, this is SkyscraperCity. People want to see huge, tall buildings. Japan's high density, lack of space, astronomical land prices and high frequency of natural disasters makes it hard to build rows of supertalls.

Well some like organized (say like Chicago), dense, tall skylines and others don't. Osaka's skyline isn't perfect, judging from pics as I've never set foot in the city let alone Japan yet, but I love it for its density and never-ending waves of high and mid-rise buildings. Height isn't a huge deciding factor..
