View Full Version : Thailand will use 10-digit mobile telephone system on September 1
bualaa May 28th, 2006, 08:42 PM Thailand will use 10-digit mobile telephone system on September 1
Thailand will change from 9-digit to 10-digit mobile telephone system on September 1.
Setthaporn Khusripithak (เศรษฐพร คูศรีพิทักษ์), a member of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said the change, approved by the telecom regulator yesterday, was in response to the rapid expansion of the use of mobile telephones.
With the 10-digit system, the country will have enough mobile telephone numbers for the next 30 years, Mr. Setthaporn said.
Beginning September 1, users of all mobile telephone systems will have to dial the prefix 08, he said. For examples, the number 01-123-4567 will be changed to 08-112-345-67 and the new number of 09-123-4567 will be 08-912-345-67.

Mosaic May 28th, 2006, 09:07 PM What about fixed line telephone like 02-123-4567???? Will it be changed to 10 digits too or this system just only for mobile phone?
kiku99 May 28th, 2006, 11:44 PM only the mobile number i guess for now. because there should be enough number for fixed line...and didn't we just change the system recently 4-5 years ago :) but actually a few other countries have changed to 8-digits system for a while though;)

Speed August 23rd, 2006, 12:41 PM I like the change cause my number is even better now :D
is this change automatic? or do we have to do something??
jooons August 23rd, 2006, 02:55 PM what i really dont understand that they no just apply this rule to new numbers only and leave the old ones as they are. Like this, many people from overseas wont realize the change and don't get connected. anybody has an reasonable explenation why they did that ?
BODYholic August 23rd, 2006, 03:38 PM Is the change transparent to customers?
Because I am using 12Call and I am in Singapore, whereas my teerak, uses True Move, is in Colorado now. We definitely will not be in Thailand for the next 1 or 2 mths. Any advise?

I guess it's about the technical problem.
It may not be practical to have 2 systems at the same time.
:dunno:

No, it is not automatically changed, we have to either edit all of our phone numbers that we saved in our cellphones by putting "8" in between or go to customer service shop and they can help us done it. :)

:dunno:
the first 2 months after Sep 1st, we still can use old number to make a call that means there will be 2 systems, 9 and 10 digits in function but later than that one who didn't change or upgrade its cellphone, can't make a call. :)
cHemon August 24th, 2006, 07:00 AM ^^ What I meant is in the long term. :)
Mosaic August 24th, 2006, 07:05 AM ^^^^Then, I have no idea either. :D

but I think your sim card still works right?
just if you want to update your phonebook contacts, you must edit all numbers by hand or automatically update at a True customer shop?
I read that if someone calls your mobile phone after November 1, 2006, they must dial 08X-XXX-XXXX right?
During Sept 1 to end of Sept, both dialing systems (0X-XXX-XXXX and 08X-XXX-XXXX) work right?

yes and yes, Speed :)
stmon August 28th, 2006, 08:50 AM It will not be too complicated to do like I thought. :)
Speed August 28th, 2006, 02:12 PM oh OK, not so bad then....only must remember to tell all friends outside Thailand to first call "668X" (not just "66X")before the mobile phone number (or they will think you dumped them :tongue2: )
Mosaic September 1st, 2006, 09:32 AM SIM upgrading begins today
Mobile phone users can start upgrading their SIM cards for the new 10-digit numbers free of charge from today at all operators' shops nationwide. They have until Nov 30 to upgrade the cards, or they will not be able to receive incoming calls.
Market leader Advanced Info Service (AIS) said its customers can upgrade their SIM cards via www.ais.co.th/10digits. Alternatively, they can have their cards updated at 600 AIS shops and 200 mobile caravans in communities in remote areas.
DTAC customers can get their numbers updated at 23 DTAC service halls and 312 shops countrywide. Those using Symbian phones can update their cards themselves at www.dtac.co.th or www.happy.co.th and download the ''Add 8'' programme. They can also call the 1678 DTAC call centre or send an SMS to 7099.
A total of 32 million mobile phone users, both pre-paid and post-paid, will have to add an 8 in the middle of the existing two-digit prefix to make mobile-to-mobile calls. Numbers starting with 01, 09 and 06 will become 081, 089 and 086.
International calls made to local mobile numbers will also have to add 8 after the country code, followed by the one-digit prefix and seven-digit number.
For mobile-to-fixed line calls, numbers will not change.
After today all new mobile subscribers, both pre-paid and post-paid, will be put on the 10-digit system.

Mosaic September 1st, 2006, 09:44 AM New phone numbering system takes effect
Callers to mobile phones now should start dialling "08", followed by the existing eight-digit number, as the new national numbering plan takes effect today.
Fixed-line telephone numbers remain the same.
For example, mobile phone numbers that start with "01" should be switched to an "081" prefix. The number (01) 234 5678 becomes (081) 234 5678.
Callers from abroad will have to add "8" after Thailand's "66" country code. For example, +668-1234 5678 would replace +66-1234 5678.
However, callers have until November 30 to get used to the new cellular dialling scheme. From December 1, only the 10-digit mobile-phone numbers will be valid.
All mobile-phone operators are now offering a free service at shops nationwide to convert numbers stored in handsets to the 10-digit format, regardless of the customer's service operator.
They will also send teams to busy shopping areas, such at Victory Monument and Silom as well as the offices of their customers to offer the conversion service.
Users also have to reconfigure the code of the short message function in their devices, which they can do by themselves or at operators' shops, to enable them to send and receive short messages. But they have a grace period until March 30.
Sigve Brekke, CEO of Total Access Communication (DTAC), said he would join more than 300 of his employees in spending the day in the Silom, Sathorn and Victory Monument areas to help people update their numbers.
The numbering plan aims to increase the total of phone numbers to 300 million from the present 90 million, which is expected to be enough to serve surging demand for 30 years.
Cellular-service providers have spent a combined Bt400 million upgrading their systems to comply with the new numbering plan.
The National Telecommunications Commission spent Bt30 million to publicise its new policy.
