Clearly a half baked pseudo-modern design. Pretentious. No substance. It looks cluttered in the middle and messy at the top. The interlocking design makes no sense at all. Some points for the colors. It's a piece of rubbish with some nice colors.

I think you've mistaken me for one of those who rated it 9 or 10 (including yourself perhaps?).

By the way I don't like to be welcomed by a retard.

broadie,

richosob (virarch reincarnated) is no doubt short for (richo son of bitch) because I don't think he likes me very much - but I won't lose any sleep over it!!

This guy is your typical garden variety 'recidivist' and I have no doubt he will be back, masquerading under some new alias - but ban him again we will.

Anyhow - back to Eureka, what a marvellous building!!!! 10/10.

P.S. Curtain / Mugley - fantastic shots guys, keep em coming.

Just a few points...

I was at the Rialto on the weekend and i had a chat to one of the staff up there and she said the Eureka Ob deck has an open date of December 1st. She also said that they will only be allowed to hold 180 people on their ob deck at one time compared to the 400 on Rialto. Eureka will also not be a member of the World Federation of Tall Towers or whatever it is as only one building from each city can be listed.

MG2

CtrlAltDel
August 23rd, 2006, 03:40 AM
^That's silly. I think the Eureka Tower should automatically become a member of the World Federation of Tall Towers, or even knock Rialto from it's place. It's also much nicer IMO.

Which is taller? This building or Q1?

broadie
September 2nd, 2006, 01:48 AM
Eureka is taller to roof 297m i think
and Q1 has a taller spire 322.5m
u decide what u think is taller

Eureka!
September 2nd, 2006, 05:02 AM
Yeah and they are considering putting a mast on the roof to make it taller and have an outdoor ob deck or something.

Q1's spire is 97.7 metres but starts below the tip of the tower. 47 metres of spire is above the top which means it is shorter than Eureka to roof but taller to the top of the spire.

CULWULLA
September 3rd, 2006, 06:49 AM
Ive been asked by Grocon months ago if Eureka was to proceed with communications mast how high would it have to be to be world tallest resi. They did submit plans last year for a 54m tower which would reach 351m .but ive told them about a dozen in dubai which will be over 350m even 400m+ and they said crap. so they might just concentrate on a smaller structure.

Stick, branch, architectural extension, call it what you will but it doesn't change the fact it's not livable space. Tallest building to structural tip in Aust. definitely but the tallest residential building, maybe for a sea-gull who would probably just shit on it, I mean sit on it.
Eureka is currently the tallest residential to roof (which IMO counts more).

I went up Eureka last week to the display unit they have on the 32nd floor.
They asked me if I was renting or buying. I think a one bedroom was about AUD395.00 per week to rent. It was ok, I didn't really like the bedrooms. The way the building has setbacks mean there are pokey little balcony spaces in some rooms. The lounge space was very cool though with wall to ceiling glass.

They concierge said the observation level will be opening after Xmas.

No matter how I see this tower, it always looks too busy. It's tolerable, but especially at the top with the gold box and random red line, it looks somewhat abstract.
Also the ruler lines, dont like them.

I have never seen this building before, but it obviously takes its shape from a ruler or a thermometer; which means the architect is probably trying to indicate something regional. Nevertheless, anyone who's not from Melbourne has no way to understand it for it breaks basic architectural principles. So I think he would have been more successfull by simplyfying the exterior; that is, by getting rid of the obvious like the red column and at least half of the white lines. This would have allowed observers to figure it out by themselves while making it more intriguing! Anyway, I guess each country has different tastes! So I will give the architect an 8 for pulling it off because he would not have been able to get away with it anywhere else! :)

The only thing that's not bad about Eureka is the white lines.

The top of the building is a joke. The shape is boring. Zero ingenuity and creativity.

The philosophy of making it a so-called "beacon" is even more repulsive. Why should tourists watching downtown buildings from afar be blinded by the reflection of sunlight from a single ugly building?? Did the architect think about other buildings in the neighborhood?

Eureka - utter failure!

It would be an 'utter failure' if nobody lived in it. It's a residential building, it's primary purpose is to house people, which it does successfully. And nobody gets blinded by the sunlight reflecting off it as it's not reflecting downwards, look at the photos. Dumbass. PS: You on school holidays again virarch?

I guess my remark "utter failure" touched a sensitive nerve. I was talking about the design of the building, not your life and education, though the comment would have been equally fit. LOL! Get a life, loser.

You're entitled to your opinion, but most if this comment is just stupid. The 'flared' reflection pic a few posts down is a piece of clever photography, and it's nonsense to talk about people being blinded by the reflection. I see the building every day, and at sunset it shines a bright rich gold, which is delightful.

Again, while I don't think the building is above criticism, to say it has "zero ingenuity or creativity" just exposes the overworked malice of your post. The weight of opinion in this thread is heavily against you.

I happen to think "flat" perspective of Eureka - the 'ruler' - is not perfect from some views, and - (like a number of others )- I have a bit of a problem with the proportions of the gold crown on those angles. I would have liked to have seen it go a couple of levels higher.

Just the same, it more than compensates with some really dramatic angles from the river frontage, and the color scheme, becoming deeper, works strikingly in this setting.

You seem to assume that the Melbourne forum is claiming this is the greatest building in the world - like the silly thread (started from Toronto, incidentally) pitting it against the twice-sized Sears Tower, obviously inviting as many put-downs as possible.

I have never heard anyone here say this is the greatest building in the world. But we do think it's a good one - and it's great for us, at this development level. And we appreciate the generally good reception it's received.

Gee, what a completely misinformed comment. Look at any number of photos of Eureka and see what an interesting shape this building actually has.

Go do your research before putting a building of this caliber down.

Every building is influenced to some extent by the region its developed/build it.
I think it's quite childish for an enthusiast from another region to put it down to such an extent simply because they don't grasp or understand its design concepts.
To each their own but some of the criticisms expounded are quite shallow IMO.

It's just a popular way to photograph buildings among Melbourne forumers. It's a lot harder to pull off than it seems, I still haven't managed to take such a shot successfully. In many cases, it's just a display of photographic mastery and you won't actually see something like that in reality.

The more I see this building ; the more it grows on me. When I was in Melbourne last year I absolutely hated this building. I thought it was ridiculously tall for Melbourne and disjointed the whole skyline. But looking at these pics, it is an intriguing design and is one-of-a-kind. In some pics it looks very slender and sleek and in others it has more girth. The white lines and red trim are a little tacky, but it does have special meaning with local history. Is it perfect? Far from it. But now I think of it as an asset to Melbourne.

It's simply a matter of being in the right position with the right weather at the right time of day. And it's definitely Eureka rather than the camera making the light, otherwise you'd see a heap of similar photos of Rialto and the Collins St twins. :)

Took this one ages ago, and while the colour here is a white balance thing, the light reflection was absolutely visible and obvious to the naked eye...

the base is quite disappointing for a great skyscraper like that. at the sides, it looks a little out of proportion where the bottom look too thick.

January 8th, 2007, 10:53 AM
bahh as far as most Melbournians are concerned we already have the tallest, considering the collins twins arent officially taller than rialto then why should Q1 be taller than E??

no point building an ugly stick just to be taller.. then we'd b just as bad as qld in cheeting to win the title of aus tallest, anyway i dont want to turn this thread into another pointless E vs Q1 argument about whos tallest etc...

Wow Eureka is amazing ! I never expected the building to look that good from the renderings. These light effects on the cladding make up for the absence of night lighting scheme due to it being a glass residential tower.
I love how the balconies are integrated in the design so that they don't look ugly. Great building ! I'm hesitating between 9.0 and 9.5, that's to say how I like it. I only awarded 9.5 to my personal favourites so I'll be conservative and go with a 9/10.

It is, of course imo, that this is one of the most artistic skyscrapers ever......it's stunning. obviously the top is where it's at. It's fortunate, for melbourne, that every now and then an architect is able to freely express his/her self through their design like this. in psychology there is this thing called "projection". people who routinely engage in certain behaviors tend to think that others routinely engage in similar behaviors as well.

given the ridiculously inflated ratings of this building, I wouldn't be surprised if the number of 10's and 9.5's were boosted by Australian posters using multiple accounts.

there's really no need for you to give me your lame excuses for rating it 10/10, such as "it's different from other buildings" nonsense. it would have been better that way because now you've shown the readers here just how stupid you are in rating buildings. every building is different. even twin towers differ in some minor ways. by your standard, every building deserves a 10/10.

try to keep it civil. and if you have too much time on your hand, read a few books on architecture or logic or even debate. it's worth the effort if you want to reduce your stupidity a bit sooner.

Is it actually possible for people to vote on building after building in this subforum? My membership here predates the Rate Our Talls forum and I've probably voted on about 30 buildings tops.

It'd feel like the most mundane thing ever. I'm only here because it appeared on the front page.

I get much more gratification looking at Eureka through a camera lens.

What's so unusual with 100 posts in 2-3 days? Nothing. When normal people rate buildings in this forum, they don't sign in to rate one or two buildings and then log out and come back again the next day to rate another one or two. They browse through all 4 pages if they have the time or at least 2 pages, which don't take very long.

What IS unusual is people like YOU, who suddenly appears out of nowhere and continues, seamlessly, a pointless argument or personal attack from previous posts by other aliases.

If irrelevant garbage is all you have to contribute, please do yourself and the rest of us a favor, get the hell out of here.

This building has been way overrated. I can't believe so many posters have rated such a lousy design above 9/10. Kinda fishy don't you think?

My sentiment as well. This building is way overrated. Seems to me that buildings in Australia tend to get tons of totally unwarranted 10's.

What part of this building warrants a 10? NONE!

A lot of pictures for this below average tower. Why? Do you guys really think that pictures of the tower in sunset or reflections off the glass facade will change the building's design in any way? I gather about 95% of those who voted 10/10 were Australians.

Mind you, this is not a site for display of misguided patriotism or nationalism.

No. First off it's not true. Secondly it's not as amusing as your sudden appearance and making a false claim. Finally, how do you reconcile the fact that so many Aussies rated this poorly designed tower 10 or 9.5?

I joined SSC because there are great people in this forum who participate in a community, where we talk about all things relating to skyscrapers, planning and infrastructure. I'm still here after four and a half years. And I am still yet to vote on most buildings in Rate Our Talls.

Most others are here for this same reason.

On the one hand, I'm here, because I think that the boards are very fun and informative to read, which is why whenever I rate a building I give it a solid 10 as a little "thank you" gesture to those who contributes to this wonderful community on a daily basis.
On the other hand, I believe that putting down others just because they are patriotic about their country is a sick act that is a direct indicator of one's intellectual capacity. Enough said.

Do you guys really think that pictures of the tower in sunset or reflections off the glass facade will change the building's design in any way?No, quite the opposite in fact. The building's design changes the way the light reflects during sunset and other times. I've said it before - if the reflections were purely the work of the photographers, why do we have so many from Eureka and so very few from its neighbours?

Original Poster: You know who

===========================

to: wjfox2002 (and other "moderators" or Aussies like him)

First of all, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (sorry, can't help it)

You've got to be the most pathetic imbecile and lowlife I've ever seen. If there's someone more pathetic than you, it'll have to be the dumbass who picked you to be a "moderator".

This is the first time I've seen a so-called "moderator" or site admin that so flagrantly flaunt his stupidity and shamelessness in abusing his given privileges in public by deleting ratings in a poll simply because certain posters didn't vote the way he wanted. Why not just make every poll a 3 option poll - 10, 10, and 10. Hahahahaha.

Given your sub-human intelligence, you'll probably never realize how pathetic you were in committing such a thuggish clown act. According to your public profile, you are almost 28 years old. 28!!! And this is the kind of maturity you've managed to achieve?! Hahahahaha! Pathetic! Your IQ is probably lower than that of the average 8 year old.

Your occupation as a "science fiction writer" is itself a piece of fiction. Forget about science, monkey boy. There isn't a single logic gate inside your decaying thick skull. You're a drop-out grade born loser. But you've already written your best fiction - your Interests! (quote from your profile: Photography, swimming, art, architecture, creative writing, web design, music, cinema, pubs, clubs, dining out, exploring London!!! Hahahahahahaha!! Now that's creative writing.

I wonder how you inherited such an inferior brain. I guess you were probably born in Australia to a pair of inbred parents who were themselves descendants of exiled criminals from England two hundred years ago. Of course that's not the only way to be born stupid. Hail Australia - the dumping ground of England's criminals.

You overestimated this stinking site, retard. It doesn't take a genius to see that few visitors come to the site and most of those who post here (i.e. Australians, Chinese) SOUND awfully like members of your inbreeding family - ignorant, stupid and foul-mouthed. But then how many normal people would want to participate in a site managed by a group of unethical, unprincipled and brain dead jackasses, except to have some fun teasing moronic lowlifes such as yourself and members of your inbreeding family ? Or should I call them Australian forumers? Hahahahahahaha!!!

Oh by the way, why stop deleting ratings after just two polls? Do every poll, retard!! I double dare you!! Well, make that an order!! Let's see if you can delete them all before I get back from my vacation trip. I'll try to convince more kids in my neighborhood to keep you entertained in the mean time. Be nice to them. They are more intelligent and have better taste than you and most forumers here (Aussie, Chinese or otherwise). Ask them how to write computer programs that post ratings automatically, dumbass!

Thanks for the laugh!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

P.S.
I forgot to remind you guys this: BE SURE to use condomS (double it up) when you have sex with any member of your family, your mother/father included. And please please please do the world a favor - don't try to date outside your family, lest the global gene pool gets polluted further. Not that I'm worried that brainless jackasses like you could find anyone worthy for real but there are always those of the opposite sex with similar mental deficiencies like yours.

Bit sad, but almost funny when he goes to so much trouble making multiple sequences of posts agreeing with himself, and his mad anti-Australian, anti-Chinese rants. Let's hope he comes back from his vacation (mentioned below) rested - or preferably, dried up, like the little turd he is.

Meantime, back on topic, sharing here one of Mugley's great recent art shots, of Eureka over one of the sculptures across the river.
