Bronteboy May 2nd, 2007, 01:46 PM As some may, know Eureka's glass-floored viewing 'cube' -projecting and retracting from the 88th floor, will open on May 15. It's called 'The Edge.'
Apparently the new general observation deck also has some sloping floors to increase that 'falling' feeling. None of that's for me - but Melbourne Forumers are planning to have their regular 'Meet' up there on opening day.
Here's some pics and an article with some details already posted on Ozscrapers forums:

Culwulla's photo-shop on a previously posted pic of where the 'suspended' people will be ... on a glass floor that turns from opaque to clear, and sounds that turn from soothing music to breaking noises, as if the thing's about to plummet: (its the tiny white bit - pic shows smaller here)

New view from Melbourne highrise
* By Shelley Markham
* May 01, 2007
THRILLSEEKERS can now take in a unique view of Melbourne from a glass-floored cube hanging from the side of the city's tallest building.
The Edge at Eureka will open to the public on May 15 as part of an observation area on the 88th floor of the Eureka Tower apartment block in Southbank.
The glass walls, ceiling and the floor start opaque and gradually become clear as the cube fully extends 3m from the side of the building.
Soothing music followed by the sound of grinding metal and breaking glass were used for sound effects during the media preview ride today.
Project director James Cockburn said he wanted visitors to the observation deck to experience something unique.
"We're trying to go from comfortable to scary. We're sadistic I suppose," Mr Cockburn said.
"We've got an experience that is more than the view."
But Mr Cockburn said the five minute ride is not for the faint-hearted.
"It's a glass box that's sitting on wheels and we're rolling it out from the building," he said.
"It's cantilevered into the building, so we don't actually structurally hold it into the building, it holds itself into the building."
Mr Cockburn said the highest safety standards had been adhered to.
"It's very, very safe," Mr Cockburn said.
At $12 admission the Skydeck 88 observation deck offered the same 360 degree views of Melbourne as a $7 million penthouse on the floor below.
Mr Cockburn said Skydeck 88 also boasted a terrace, viewfinders positioned to take in places of interest around Melbourne and sloping floors designed to "play with people's senses".
The $500 million 92-storey Eureka Tower, which was officially opened in October last year, was designed by Fender Katsalidis Pty Ltd and built by Grocon Pty Ltd.

Dancer May 5th, 2007, 09:05 PM Simply amazing. I gave it an 8.5 but the more I look at the pictures the more I think it should be a 9 or even 9.5. Great height, great design, and a great city from what I can see. :okay:

The CN Tower has a glass floor like that. I will warn you right now that it is unexpectedly creepy to stand on one of those things. Your head knows that it is safe, but your body is screaming at you to get the heck off it!

Stefan88 May 15th, 2007, 04:59 AM Im not particularly afraid of heights but I think "The Edge" would scare the shit out of me.
I've stood on the glass floor in the Eiffel Tower and wasn't to bothered once I was on it. But the noises it makes would really trip me out. The sloping floors aswell would also be very weird. It's an amazing idea though.

Myster E July 27th, 2007, 02:14 AM absolutely stunning in every way, 10/10. decent height and proportions, logical location & quality cladding with the nice monolithic effect and the patterned white stripes are well aligned. The surrounding/adjacent buildings are of a pretty decent height too and also make it stand out but at the same time not a sore thumb soaring over its neighbours, really compliments its presence and vice versa. Plus the Gold crown under the melbourne sunset really beckons this buildings vast presence as the center pinnacle for the thriving city that is Melbourne, an absolutely beautiful building. whoever gave this building 2 or less is nuts but everyone has an opinion.

Muse August 12th, 2007, 04:50 PM nothin really special bout it.. 5/10..Well there is actually. It symbolises The Eureka Stockade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eureka_Stockade), which during 1854 in Ballarat in the state of Victoria, Australia, the gold miners revolted against their working conditions and pay. Approximately 20 men were killed and many others injured. The red stripes on the crown of Eureka Tower represent the blood that was spilt during the rebellions. Of course the gold glass of the crown is quite relevant to this. The navy blue and white of the main tower component are representative of the Eureka Stockade flag:
http://eurekasydney.com/images/eureka_flag.jpg
Also, the glass on the top 10 floors is 24 carat gold infused.

Unfortunately, I just woke up to my last day here in Melbourne until I head back to the real world back in Brisbane.

very nice building.
invincible September 14th, 2007, 03:36 AM I love how all of Melbourne's big projects (and small ones) are designed by local architects. It's better than the majority of celebrity architects who often produce very similar works or designs which are just out of place.
SEED, you might live here but seeing that you don't really participate in the Australian forum (where you'll see that almost everyone in Melbourne is a huge fan of Nonda Katsalidis, the architect of this building), it's quite likely that you're here on a student visa who will either leave the country as soon as you get your degree or try to use it to gain permanent residency. The history of the Eureka Stockade is very important to many people (it is considered the birth of democracy) and it obviously has a big influence on the tower's design.
Melbourne's best works are never conservative structures to please traditional people. They all attempt to break away from what the rest of the world is doing in design. Like this statue of Governor Charles La Trobe (http://www.maybe.com.au/melbourne/melb/latrobe3.JPG), or the Cow up a Tree (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianlloyd/55126972/), or anything designed by ARM (http://www.a-r-m.com.au/).
And Eureka always shines in the gloom.

^sneakers^ October 29th, 2007, 05:58 PM very fine building. this should be over 10.
isoboy November 8th, 2007, 01:43 AM Upon completion, this was an instant Melbourne classic - it's added tremendously to the skyline. The height is awesome, the cladding is interesting and of very high quality, and the whole building is just a class act. It's a stunner day or night, and especially at twilight, when the setting sun makes the gold section look like its burning with fire within.
One of the most interesting things about Eureka is that, as Gappa said, it looks different from all angles. You can never get sick of it, because the way it looks is always changing as you move about the city. This also ties into the only criticism I have (a very slight one, though), which is that from a few angles it looks extremely thin, almost toothpick-like compared to the other buildings; a look I'm not such a fan of. Anyhow, excellent overall - 9.5/10 from me.
BTW, I have to add though, that some of the OzScapers members are being very parochial in this thread. There's no need to attack someone if they're not such a huge fan of the building. Everyone has their own opinion, and if opinions weren't wanted, then what was the point of this thread in the first place?

Middle-Island February 20th, 2008, 08:21 AM While its stripes seem bolder than anything found in Dubai, the shape foils it from appearing truly garish. Blatantly bold but curiously complex. That's quality in design. As for quantity, it's unreal! Nothing less than a 9.

The views were, well what do you expect from 300m up in the air? Melbourne sort of prides itself with having designed its cityscape rather than just let it compete.

for some reason Eureka now has grown 3m to 300m. yes it does say 300m on Eurekas website but they are using there artistic liscence rounding it up becuase 300m is its sea level height. it needs to be redrawn at 297m.

Eureka! August 27th, 2008, 01:03 PM The golden bee sculptures on the tower's podium. They are a relatively new addition to the building.

Anberlin August 27th, 2008, 02:04 PM does anyone hear know illustrator nightsky on skyscraperpage?
for some reason Eureka now has grown 3m to 300m. yes it does say 300m on Eurekas website but they are using there artistic liscence rounding it up becuase 300m is its sea level height. it needs to be redrawn at 297m.
I think some lighting poles were installed a while ago on top of Eureka.

Dimethyltryptamine December 5th, 2010, 06:09 AM It looks amazing. Unnecessary only this gold "something" :)

I wouldn't say the gold is unnecessary. The building is after all named in honour of 'The Battle of Eureka Stockade', which was an organised rebellion of gold miners in Ballarat in the 1850s. Melbourne, I guess you could say, would not be what it is today if it were not for the gold rush and Eureka pays homage to that. Also, the red stripe on the building is representative of the blood spilt during the Battle of Eureka Stockade.

Quall July 1st, 2011, 10:28 AM Looks alright, but it could do without that gold/red nonsense at the top.
Dimethyltryptamine July 1st, 2011, 10:31 AM I know where you're coming from, but that would defeat the entire purpose of the building and what it stands for.
Quall July 14th, 2011, 07:56 AM I can imagine how sleek it would look without the stuff on top. I'm not saying it's horrible, just not appropriate imo. Otherwise it's pretty nice.
Dimethyltryptamine July 14th, 2011, 08:08 AM It is appropriate. The building, named Eureka, is a symbol of Victoria's gold rush in the 1800s. Hence the gold glass on top?
