Thought I'd post some pics (not very many of each city - sorry) of three upstate cities not often seen. Olean (pop~15,000), Elmira(pop~30,000), and Cortland (pop~17,000). I think Olean and Cortland are holding their own fairly well, but Elmira has been on a downslide for quite a while.

i almost bought a house in elmira several years ago. the price was great - 22,000 dollars for a 3200 square foot house. the problem was that the property taxes were nearly 5000 dollars per year. i believe that elmira might have the highest property tax rate in the nation. it's a shame, because there is so much interesting architecture.
thanks so much, ex-ithacan for these photos. i always enjoy seeing your posts.

NY's southern tier rocks!

that's a real shame about that clock tower building... Bellefonte knows your pain :(

Olean is not too far from my hometown of St. Marys, PA... some people from my hometown used to go on shopping trips there...

Olean is the best out of these three

Olean is pretty cool for a city of less than 15,000

I have a bunch of family there, Olean is an incredibly incredibly impressive city for its population, and for being in Upstate New York.

the other two towns, i have visited, and i thouroughly dislike them.

Olean's very nice, I like it the best of the 3 cities you have shown, impressive little city of 15,000. Elmira and Cortland's very urban.

Olean's also the birthplace of the late game show host, Peter Tomarken, host of PRESS YOUR LUCK.

That building which is prominent in pics #2 and 3 of Olean looks alot like a default building in SimCity 4, if I remember...

Oh yeah, those tend to pop up a lot when I start zoning medium density commercial.
