^^ I don't know the definition of a major accident, that's a fact. But I can imagine that if there are ('big') risks of damage to the building or any kind of injuries, even small injuries, you can call it a major accident.

If something like a huge crane collapses at 300 meters height on top of a almost finished structure, where other people can walk under it on the structure or on the ground in the surroundings or even in buildings next to Infinity Tower, I think this is really a major accident!!!

And they will of course never ever do something like a 'safety load test' at this stage at that place! There are so many big risks during such a test. Everything must be calculated in an early stage, even with the extra loads and extra windforce and everything else. This kind of things happened in The Netherlands also, and if a crane collapses, it happens that a project is being put on hold until a big research is done(Sometimes for months!). I guess (and hope) this isn't really the case in Dubai however..

AltinD
October 13th, 2010, 10:50 PM
^^ You are unecessarily overdramatising everything. Anyway, as I said the crane is up and running again so nothing serious here.

DennisS
October 14th, 2010, 10:26 AM
^^ I'm just telling how people from Holland think about it and would act when such accidents happen. Maybe to you it is overdramatising, fine.

If it already is up and running again then in Dubai they are really thinking and acting different than here, but that's no problem, I'm just like you glad to hear they're working again.

AltinD
October 14th, 2010, 12:45 PM
^^ You are doing it again. :ohno:

Who told you it was an accident? Maybe it was a simple maintanance job, maybe one of the cables stabilising the boom needed to be replaced.

DennisS
October 14th, 2010, 01:02 PM
^^ I assume it was an accident because the boom appears to be bent and twisted (before the lowest cabin) as if it failed to lift something up and is fallen down because of that.

If that's not the case I'll take everything I said back of course, but this is my interpretation of what I see.

And AltinD, please don't react so irritated, I'm just trying to discuss what we can see at the pics and imo that should be the purpose of this forum.

Crane accidents are quite common. In NYC two years ago there were quite a few and a couple were far worse than this. If that happened here, it would delay progress a bit but I doubt there's any serious damage to the tower, at least from the angle shown.

Here's a 'before' shot posted Sept 16:

http://i52.tinypic.com/296on5g.jpg

It appears something did happen...

True Blue

I think most people outside of heavy construction would be quite justified in being concerned about a crane failure. HOWEVER, most failures are under carefully controlled tests. It's a simple pass or fail test where the crane is subjected to a load far beyond what it is required/calibrated to lift under normal working conditions. Failure of the jib would just result in buckling of the jib section which would then need repaired and retested. Perhaps with a subsequent derating of the lifting capacity this time.

Just to drive the point home, it is a controlled test and no one is likely to get hurt due to proper methodology and risk management. This is what makes construction safer today as it removes the risk of a crane failing with a load suspended 200 metres above ground which would be a major accident.

Remember the car manufacturers regularly test cars to destruction in the pursuit of safety and no one throws their arms up in horror.

You would not "test" a crane on a 300 metre high building site.

True Blue

You would not "test" a crane on a 300 metre high building site.

That is the same as saying you would not test an Airbus A380 at 40,000ft.

Testing is time related not location related. Regular tests and thorough inspections are LAW!

according to Marina rumors - the building works has stopped due to lack of payment to Arabtec and other vendors. There was some builders on site this week - but it seems like they only came to pickup tools and quickly left again. Rumors says someone has left the country with the remainder of cash.

I cannot say if the above is right or not - only the future will tell. I hope it is not! Again the above is rumors - and NOT verified in ANY way apart from visually NO BUILDING WORKS have been done for at LEAST the past 7 days.

Not from what I've seen. Cranes have moved today.

Not from what I've seen. Cranes have moved today.

I was at the marina with view of the building all day yesterday - and nothing moved. I went past with my car - and no workers and security guard say nobody is working. He would not say anything else.

I took a picture yesterday - and NOTHING has changed (viewing from Grosvenor House) - all cradles are at the same place as above pictures.

I sincerely hope that the rumours are not true. It would be a disaster to have a half finished building there for the next few years. And the building is already 3 years+ late.

So far I have heard the rumours from a bank and 2 contacts at a construction company.

So if anyone can see workers actually working on the building - please send a picture. Post a picture guys actually working there and the rumours are not true.

thanks

Last update is now over a month old -- very surprising. Are they at least getting work done on the cladding? The cladding still had a long way to go to catch up with the completed floors, so there was plenty of work that could be done there. If there still haven't been any changes they must have run into some fairly serious financial troubles.

Good progress since 2009 :)Overall, that's true. And the construction done till summer 2010 was enormous, expecially for such an innovative design. Unfortunatelly not much has happened since September'10, otherwise the tower could be topped out for a while and show almost full cladding. It's said that some construction is going on - but It'd be nice to recognize changes on updates now. :sleepy:

Exposure was 8 seconds. So you take about 30 shots one after the other and hope to get lucky.

this is actually only one branch of the full lightning. there is a more panoramic version of this photo under http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=75942161&postcount=363

Don't be fooled by the cladding.... the windows on the inside are pretty weird and very oddly shaped. It seems the architect sacrificed window shapes, sizes and natural light for the sake of an average looking exterior facade.

When you get to go inside the tower, you will see what I mean ;)

The work on the cladding has stepped up nicely. Is the cladding stainless steel or cheaper aluminum?

AltinD
June 4th, 2011, 09:33 AM
Stainless steel is never used extensively on cladding. It's too heavy and expensive, inserts here and there yes, but throughout no. The most common cladding material is aluminium ... but even that is being replaced more and more now with composites.

This tower is no exception.

Never say never. Beekman Tower in NY is stainless steel. Of course that's just one tower amongst thousands in the world. So yeah, it's pretty rare.

Nice tower, best in Marina, the rest kinda suck in my eyes.
Especially those brown sandy color almost commy block type buildings. Jezus that makes me sad. They are lucky it doesn't rain that much in Dubai or they would have been dirty already.

From pictures it looks splendid and I hope some day I can get the chance to visit

PrincessTower
June 20th, 2011, 07:42 AM
from some renders it looks to me the cage will go quite a bit beyond the top concrete plate:

http://i7.tinypic.com/24x2dya.jpg

I would say the current extra high floor plate is the third cage row countiring from top, and the remaining two row ("crown") will be even taller.

by the way, a big truck with tons of new infinity windows has just passed by on the street.

Look at those things on top and tell me again: Construction halted or no ;)

Why do projects in Dubai seem to use way more scaffolding compared to projects elsewhere?

1. More concrete used then elsewhere 2. Labour costs are lower
