This one is a pure beauty. I dont see it as a "copycat" at all. It's rather lots differrent from the Torso Turning, only twisting that whats incommon.

and remember.. Skidmore Owings & Merrill are the architects for this one.

However, just on the next plot to it (on right side of the picture) a 400+ meter tall is likely to be build, while between Infinity and the sea, it seams to be another plot, that who know what monster might be host. :D

Calm down... no need to take it so personally.... TT will always hold a special place in skyscraper history because it was the 1st of it's kind.

calling this a copy of TT is like calling all skyscrapers a copy of the first box.

Structure and fachades are totally different, they are similar in the use and the twist. Just that.

This tower will definitely become one of my favorite tower in Dubai.

Dubai will have grass...i heard somewhere the are or already have a contract to make a huge part of the city green!

Dubais 5 year plan is to exceed the world average of grren space per person for a large international city. Dont know exactly what the figures are but they announced 9 new massive public parks to start this month as well as 5 jogging and community sports centres in the burbs.

You must remember that dubai does not pump is treated sewerage into the sea like most western counties or recyle to drink like in europe. Instaed its treated and then used to irrigate the hundreds of sq kilomiters of landscaping and green areas. And as the population grows so does the amount of TSE(treated sewerge and effulant) that needs to be used so therefore they need to create more green areas to use it up.

I don't like this tower. It looks like a twinkling star (or column of stars) from far away, but close up, I'm much of a fan for sleek, smooth towers. This is a bit too messy for me.

Dubai: Nearly 100 workers at the site of the 'tallest building with a twist' had a lucky escape yesterday as a wall holding back the Dubai Marina waters breached and flooded the foundation site.

Excavation work on the 80-floor Infinity Tower was nearing completion when there was a sharp and loud sound, said a worker.

"We then saw sand pouring down the sides," he said.

The workers were ordered to evacuate immediately, said the foreman.

The Dh700 million 80-floor tower is to have a 90 degrees twist.

According to a manager of Arabtec, the incident is under investigation.

What kinda of exprorts does this place have? Im guessing oil, cause thats tha only thing out there, but i think it maybe more. Where does all this money come from for them to have major project after project. From satilite photos ive seen, where do all the people live that are supposed to buy or rent even live in all these building? Man those workers working during summer,ouch. Ill give them my shirt of my back.

Reports from True Blue from 10th and 11th Feb

Well, looks like you've got the picture of situation at infinity. After a dreadfull flight over (due to weather delays) arrived in the marina Friday. Only managed to get speaking to someone on the constuction team Saturday. Met the senior Engineer from APCC at the Trident Grand site.

After an hour of discussion I can only conclude this for the moment. The cause is not yet known nothing can be done until the area is drained and thoroughly inspected. How they go about this is going to depend on a number of factors. A floating crane barge has arrived in the outer marina and I suspect they will attempt to squeeze it under the bridge at low tide. The thing the APCC engineer kept stating was that this problem will let them demonstrate how good they are at their work.

My opinion is that this is not down to a botched job, if it was then the Infinity wall would have collapsed on its own and the marina wall would have remained. I think we are going to be looking at a geotechnical problem. It looks to me like something in the ground has gone as a result of the pressure from the excavation, taking the marina wall and Infinity wall together. The hole in the marina wall is wider than the infinity wall. You would expect it to be the other way. If this is the cause then its a straight forward insurance claim. I got the impression that APCC are not hanging around to fill in forms, they are getting straight down to business and clear this up as soon as possible.

My assessment is about 2 - 3 months delay (but what do I know)

I will be meeting with Cayan soon.

Update

Met with the lead consultant for the sub-structure, Khatib and Alami, on Sunday morning. He had his proposal document completed and ready to present at the main meeting to be held with Emaar that afternoon. This means that they burned the midnight oil on this problem and worked through the weekend.

The intention is to float in a crane barge and pile two rows of sheet piles in a semi circle around the breach. The piled walls will be cross braced like a truss on plan and then infilled. This all requires Emaars approval and will restrict or even block access for boats. They are going to request that the new bridge construction is halted and a channel opened to provide alternative route for boats.

The cause of the collapse remains a mystery. The excavation had been completed and the final row of anchors were being installed when cracks started appearing in the diaphragm wall. The bottom of the wall had an 8 metre toe-in, so the existing works and passive resistance from the toe in should be enough to resist the loads. No water was passing below the toe of the wall so scour can be eliminated. During the stand up meeting, he did allude to the fact that a redundant culvert was discovered during the walling phase and this may have contributed to the failure.

I didn't take notes as the discussions were conducted very openly and frankly and I wanted to keep it that way. A list of all the plant still in the hole was dictated and this is what I recall.

1 Crawler crane
2 Tracked excavators
2 JCB's (may be a duplication of above)
4 Compressors
some others but can't remember the exact details.

Finally, the incident went without event as it was a progressive collapse. When the drillers reported the cracks appearing in the wall to the Foreman, he ordered everyone out of the hole. No attempt was made to rescue plant, safety was priority. Everyone watched from the surface as the cracks widened and eventually the wall burst.

I was given an open invitation to return to the site office for an update before I return home. Before that, I want to get in some skiing as the snow in Dubai is better than in Scotland at the moment. Who ever expected to read these words?

I reckon it might be cancelled, maybe they will build is somewhere else, and redesign it to fit that location. It looks like they will have to do something very drastic if they are to be able to build a 330m high skyscraper on that plot, maybe they will build something else, or use it as a plaza, or parkinggarage, that would be needed wouldnt it?

the plot for OCH II is next to the Infinity Plot, so i don't think they won't build a supertall on it

Hmmmmm it is gonna be difficult to get the water out but it when the water is out, you can proceed with construction easely.
Yust look at our country: The Netherlands. We reclaimd so much land that the land has become a province on its own with a complete city built on top off it; Almere.

So it shouldnt be much off a problem.

as some people mentioned earlier, this is apparently a serious foundation side wall failure. Not enough reinforcement was put in to support the force of water pushing inward to the land.

No matter how powerful that boats motors are, the sheer pulling force of the water filling that void, would have sucked the boat right into the construction hole..

I wonder how much $$ this will cost the Contractors?? Construction equipment is not cheap! I would expect them to have the equipment insured..

One of the most beautiful building i ever seen.

That is really sad news. It happens when the construction got out of control and unable to double check to make sure everything is under control before they can go ahead start another construction project. This is great lesson that anyone of us can learn from it.

I hope people will figure it out how to flush that water pool and let it dry for a bit and fix the wall at same time so they can go ahead and finish this construction asap.

I think its more horrible that people could have been injured or even worse becouse of bad planning/execution.

^^ The reason the retaining wall collapsed, was becouse it was a hole on the other side. If there was "...a massive building is on top of the foundation..." there would be no hole anymore and therefore no accident.

Dubai needs to get some help from London, the whole Canary Wharf development (with some buildings up to 50 stories) is built on the waterside, and never had a problem like this.

oh come on, it can happen anywhere for a multitude of reasons!

Well... No offensive, London isn't building it like crazy as Dubai does... It might be why it never happen to London's Canary's Wharf because it did step to step on each projecte to make sure everything is under control. It is about two decades project now. Dubai is seen like they're in rush to get everything done on time. I think Dubai needs to step back and rethink what they're really doing right now and they can start step to step so they can make everything right and under control just avoid any disasters... You know?

^^ Would you want to go to anyplace that get built so quickly and unsafe? No, I don't think so. My point is if Dubai slows down with constructions and make sure everything is under control first then they can go ahead with numerous of constructions as long as they're safe and well organized. It is pretty common for some buildings around the world that got built too quickly than should be are often collapsed or fall aparting or really bad quality.

it is still on hold, they must test the old foundation first before they can resume the construction

For me, it's definitely one of the most beautiful and elegant buildings in Dubai.

The piling contractor A.P.C.C. screwed up big time and poked a big hole in their pockets ... well being a Abu Dhabi company the owner should have very deep pockets so the losses here might be just some loose changes for him.
