Yazoo June 6th, 2006, 01:16 AM Woah! now that's a truly picturesque town :) How far is it from Rabat or Casablanca? Is it easy to reach by train or bus?
You could take the train to Meknes (about 3.5 hours from Casablanca) then take a Bus there, it's not that far, not even an Hour by Bus I suppose.
Otherwise you can take a CTM bus directly from Casablanca/Rabat would take about 4 hours I think.
eklips June 6th, 2006, 01:17 AM Surprising! Anybody knows what is the history of this town?
Frog June 6th, 2006, 01:26 AM interesting pics, never seen this before. looks just like an alpine village
Casa June 6th, 2006, 03:37 AM History of Ifrane
A small town situated in Morocco's Middle Atlas, Ifrane has been around for centuries. The earliest permanent settlement dates back from the 16th century when a community was established in the Tizguit valley. Just a little downstream from modern day Ifrane, you will find an area that is still very much inhabited by the descendants of Sidi 'Abd al-Salem who founded Ifrane.
In the regional Berber language the word 'yfran' is plural for 'cave' and when you explore the surrounding limestone plateaus you will find an abundance of them. During the town's founding days, many homes were carved out of the surrounding rock. Today there are no people living in these caves which are now used as mangers and store houses.
Modern Ifrane only truly began life around 1929 during the Protectorate period when the French decided to establish a 'hill station' here. The city rests on an elevation of 1600m above sea-level and is surrounded by pine, cedar and oak forests which makes it a relatively cool city. As a result, many tourists from other parts of Morocco come here during the hot summer months to escape the heat. Perhaps the most distinguishable trait of Ifrane is its unusual Alpine architectural style - quite out of character with the rest of Moroccan architecture.
During winter, Ifrane sees even more visitors as people flock here to try their hand at the snow-covered slopes or simply to enjoy the simple pleasure of snow. During the rest of the year, the town has a large student population who attend the Al Akhawayn University.

The Ifrane Lion is a famous landmark in the town. There are varying stories about who made the lion. It was supposedly created by a WWII prisoner.

You better believe it, the majority of the moroccan population is concentrated around non-desertic areas. Also Oukameidan (near Marrakech) is being developped into the only true ski station in Africa...
Harkeb June 8th, 2006, 02:00 AM Jeez, still unbelievable. Sure those pictures werent taken in Germany?? And I thought South Africa was the only african country that get some snow (besides the peaks of Kilimanjaro). point to mention: We have 2 ski resorts in SA, known to be the only ones in Africa.

nwusaad June 8th, 2006, 05:08 AM beautiful setting!
too bad we dont hear of any development plans for Ifrane. It definitely deserves one! Or is it, its charm that makes it so special???
Ive never heard of projects launched there, its too bad. Also, could give new face to Morocco. Perhaps rivalize with Marrakech style. Or perhaps target rich Africans, Arabs. Show them the Alps while in Africa!!

I therefore thank you for enlighting me and others out there :)
ps- a little competition is always good, as long as it doesnt amount to bashing. Honestly, there ain't much competition for South Africa on the continent. We need it, therefore it's nice to see that Morocco is showing some muscle with great developments there.

safqa_tijariya June 9th, 2006, 03:48 PM Actually I would choose morocco anytime over South Africa even celebrities choose morocco over south africa, Morocco's weather is a lot more cooler than south africa, it has everything.
source26 June 9th, 2006, 03:55 PM actually both countries have bits of everything,
this town is so out of place for marocco.. it really doesnt look like what you expect in marocco.. but I knew the atlas mountains had some 2 meters snow in winter (2000 meters)..
AntonAmeneiro June 9th, 2006, 07:06 PM belgiumguy... I was in no way making a negative comment, but you always have to come up with your aggressive posts....and actually, it's not "brainwashing media", it just shows the issues related to Morocco that affects us (Spain) most... which is floods of illegal inmigrants trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach our coasts... actually you should care about that, because many people are dying in the sea and it's not a joke and also not an invention of the media.
It's a sad reality belgiumguy, and I wish you hadn't gone off topic bashing the Spanish media, because it was a really nice thread, and this is not the place to discuss the harsh and sad reality of illegal emigration from the Moroccan coast. It's not that I want to overlook it, I just think this thread is about this really picturesque town (Ifrane), and it's not the appropriate thread to discuss the terrible human drama that I'm now talking about.

nwusaad June 9th, 2006, 08:56 PM I agree with Anton, this thread should function as a way to change the image and perception that the world has of Morocco. There are good and bad things for all nations, and even though we might have many. Morocco's natural beauty and diversity is perhaps unique and special all throughout the world.
As for spain, I feel the image is changing especially given that so many more visitors come to Morocco. I think spaniards traditionally do not travel abroad as much, and this is why they are limited to the images and things they are directly touched by.
As for the brother Qatari, you should definitely visit.

He Anton what doe jou want morocco to do.Built giant walls at the borders, look , one more time we are a poor country , we don't have massive oil and gas and we don't get massive amounts of money from the EU like Spain. So if Spain wants to get rid of the immigrants , they could give us more money then now OR they could help the people in Africa to find a job in their own country so they don't have to risk their life in the sea.Put jourself in their case , wat would jou do if jou don't have any money, house, pc,food,... Jou would do the same thing. And if jou followed the latest report , jou'd know that morocco has doing heir best and most of the immigrants come from mauritania or senegal. That's like 300 km from the canary islands, why wuld they risk that???Because they don't have anything to lose

Actually, it's just that we've never been too keen on traveling to Arab countries, Spaniards travel abroad usually to Latin America (especially the Caribbean sea) and all over Europe.
Fortunately, this is starting to change and for instance Tunisia has become a top tourist destination for Spaniards, and the same starts to happen with Morocco (Marrakech is very popular among Spaniards).

Man, you're honestly ruining the thread... And in no way I was saying anything negative about the inmigrants... for sure if I were in their place I would do the same and even risk my life. I feel truly sorry for them.
I think you just have a personal issue against me, because you're bringing up lots of stuff that I didn't even mention on this thread... please leave your personal issues aside, and you're manipulating my words as if I had attacked inmigrants in anyway... really, leave it, the thread was truly nice until you started this little battle of yours.

nwusaad June 22nd, 2006, 03:23 AM I agree with Anton, its such a great city!!!
Now, I wonder whether it should ever become a touristical destination, or whether it is better off as a dormant city?
I think its better that for the survival of the city and its population, there should be more activity. Possibly, based upon the AUI campus.
Perhaps Anton can tell us the stories and experience of Spanish northern cities in the Pyrenees. And how they have come to be beautiful destinations. Because at the end of the day I feel that climatically and geographically Morocco and Spain have much in common and Morocco should follow and learn from Spain's experience!!
Waiting for your response amigo!
Casa June 27th, 2006, 01:43 AM i guess that ifrane should stay as it is a small quite city in order to keep its charm, even now i think is begining to loose it with all the construction added around it in the last years. and it is already a big turistic destination, in summer and winter ifrane is over crowded with people coming from surounding cities fes and meknes. you can hardly find a hotel at this times
nwusaad June 27th, 2006, 02:57 AM Thx Casa for the clarification. Now I think that perhaps the urbanization should occur at the outskirts of the city. The peripheral areas. Since as you know, today, if you do not create incentives for populations to stay in the city by providing jobs and activities.... then they will move out.
I personally feel that the city is so beautiful that preventing people from benefiting from it is unacceptable. Now, perhaps the municipality... should communicate the dangers of pollution and ways to keep the place charming.
moachid June 29th, 2006, 11:09 AM Ifrane is amazing, Ifrane is beautiful with its european architecture, but Ifrane is not an unique case in Morocco, between Fes and Ifrane, there is another city with the same style : Immouzer... is someone have some photos of this city that I like so much for I have past many holyday times in this little village during my youth....

Casa July 7th, 2006, 12:43 AM concerning the prices of houses i don't have any idea , but it shouldn't be very expensive.
ffor 4 bedtooms, you need a challet, and in genral in ifrane because is a small city you will not find a real estate company who can manage that, but i know that there are many constructions and houses close to "le marche " the market, there you can ask people and they will guide you, or you don't need to look for them just when you arrive and recognize somebody is not from the city , they wiill ask if you want to rent a house, those people can lead you to people who wants to sell trheir houses.
beside that there is erac who built some apartement there but i doubt there any 4bedroom apartment
good luck al holondi and welcome back to lbled

Spanish northern cities in the Pyrenees are divided between those who have been preserved as picturesque mountain towns and those who have become big ski resorts. In the first class I mentioned there's a very interesting way of tourism which is called "rural tourism", it's based in the refurbishing of old villages, cottages, turned into small rural hotels. It has become a very succesful way of tourism in rural areas, and it also preserves the atmosphere of the place, which isn't as destructive as the mass tourism can be.

Gilgamesh October 10th, 2006, 10:25 AM woah lol, I never knew it snows in Marroco. :uh:
nwusaad October 13th, 2006, 05:20 AM Ifrane is beautiful. Probably one of the cleanest cities in the country!
I guess thats its charm. It should be a tourist destination, but not the mass tourism that may endanger its charm and cleanliness.
Dr. Dubai October 23rd, 2006, 01:29 PM This place is awesome! Nobody would expect this in Morocco:D I knew you had snow, but a German look a like town, that's really funny:)
