taal September 13th, 2007, 03:59 PM If you see it in person, the gap really isn't as bothersome as one might expect ... I love the little screens as well! They had a volkswagen logo that poped in and out of the screens and went all the way around ... it has so much potential I'm glad it wasn't just the large screen by it self.
Taller, Better September 13th, 2007, 04:41 PM ^^ Yeah, I am going to wait and see it in person. That is a really bad photo.
caltrane74 September 13th, 2007, 04:48 PM it was probably from a camera phone.
But it is our first nightime perspective.
Tuscani01 September 14th, 2007, 12:10 AM Im so happy to see the new ticker installed under the Future Shop sign at the corner of Yonge/Dundas. Maybe thats why the ticker planned under the LCD screen is now a backlit ad.
As for the Future Shop sign, I hope the exposed wires are somewhat hidden. It looks a bit sloppy up close.

Tuscani01 September 14th, 2007, 02:38 AM I wonder how this will affect Best Buy???
Considering Best Buy owns both, I don't think it will be that much of a problem. I have both a Best Buy and Future Shop by my house in Mississauga (almost across the street from eachother) and both stores are doing fine.
Wrk_InProgress September 14th, 2007, 02:38 AM I wonder how this will affect Best Buy???
They are one in the same.
caltrane74 September 14th, 2007, 02:55 AM I finally know what the "FS" in sign behind the windo stands for.
geez that took a while.
metroboi_nay September 14th, 2007, 04:03 PM I finally know what the "FS" in sign behind the windo stands for.
geez that took a while.
It threw me off too, I figured it was for Future Shop but it said FSFS, so I was puzzled kinda, haha :)
This wasn't in the render or the ticker there, seems its changed a bit already. I wonder if the ticker where the peneq sign isn't a ticker anymore, I have a feeling it isn't now...
ggaleazz September 14th, 2007, 06:55 PM Someone fill me in b/c I can't figure out the FS sign :(:bash:

Tuscani01 September 14th, 2007, 10:54 PM There is now a third Future Shop sign up on the Yonge St. side. The sidewalk on Dundas is now partially open and they are still working on the Victoria St. sidewalk.
samsonyuen September 15th, 2007, 02:57 AM Plus, there's already a FS almost next door (though an outdated one with no video/audio).

Isnt it closing down once the one in TLS opens?
current September 15th, 2007, 05:44 AM Isnt it closing down once the one in TLS opens?
I was in the store today and on the middle of the stairs going up to the third floor computer department there was a bucket because water was dripping from the ceiling. They can't wait to get out of this building and into the new TLS.
ScrapeTheSky September 16th, 2007, 04:46 AM I always hated the Future Shop on Yonge Street. It's just gross. Reminds me of Sam's. And that's not a compliment!
Taller, Better September 16th, 2007, 05:36 PM Future Shop has a boring, dated-looking logo. I am surprised they have never bothered to make a new one.
samsonyuen September 16th, 2007, 05:43 PM I like their logo, with the >> .
caltrane74 September 17th, 2007, 03:38 PM When is it opening?
When does the subway entrance open?
anyone...anyone..
CrazyCanuck September 18th, 2007, 05:29 AM A little off track, was anyone on Yonge today??? It has turned into Harlem, all the fancy Yonge signs have been taken down, and have been given New York looking signs. It goes on for quite a stretch too, from Gerrard past Dundas. The Youth centre is now a centre for Harlem youth and we have an Apollo theatre.
Dino Domingo September 18th, 2007, 05:41 AM They're filming The Hulk!
They were setting up for hours yesterday and were filming tonight. Hundreds of extras lined the streets, they had a tank, a burnt bus, many New York cabs, some smashed in cars (like the Hulk punched them), it was all very surreal.

Yep. Walked up it to get to class and also noticed all the trucks and trailers parked around campus. I also noticed Gould St. is still playing Gould St. in the movie:) They just made it a green NY sign.

I was up on Gould on Saturday. They had a New York subway exit at Yonge, but it wasn't completely finished. The panel identifying the station was missing. What exactly did they do with Sam's?
Taller, Better September 18th, 2007, 06:12 AM Ok folks! You saw it here first.... the curved sign is up and running! Pics I took while attempting to photograph Incredible Bulk stuff:

I noticed them changing the ads on Sam's exterior last week. I dont know if it was movie related. The spinning discs on Yonge can still be seen.
Thanks for the pics TB. Its looking great, but those gaps still piss me off:@
CrazyCanuck September 18th, 2007, 06:20 AM They're filming The Hulk!
They were setting up for hours yesterday and were filming tonight. Hundreds of extras lined the streets, they had a tank, a burnt bus, many New York cabs, some smashed in cars (like the Hulk punched them), it was all very surreal.
I accidently walked into that parking lot today and was surrounded by burnt out cars, lol. That's when I started to notice I was not in T.O. anymore.
Taller: Is that screen lookin good or what. I finally saw it on today but it was just a crazy checker board pattern on it.
Taller, Better September 18th, 2007, 06:22 AM more pix to come
Jaye101 September 18th, 2007, 07:30 AM AWSOME! HAHA! The screen's on bitches!
look@round September 18th, 2007, 07:35 AM Nice screen!! I like the little screen surrounding the big one!
But I find that the Future Shop logo sucks... Hopefully there will be many other ones soon! It's still too empty!
401_King September 18th, 2007, 08:30 AM good catch TB keep em comin
the screen is better than i expected , anyone else get this impression?
rick1016 September 18th, 2007, 03:18 PM Holy fuck! Thanks TB!!!!
bar1967 September 18th, 2007, 04:22 PM Looking real good!!!!
caltrane74 September 18th, 2007, 04:39 PM amazing stuff!
Tuscani01 September 18th, 2007, 04:58 PM So im at school right now, the screen is still on. Looks like it will be on from now on.
I noticed the NY subway entrance on Gould St. Today. Its covered by a tarp. Ill try taking a pic on my way home.
ggaleazz September 18th, 2007, 06:29 PM Damn I was down at the Eaton Centre yesterday and I saw all the film trucks lining Victoria. They also renamed Yonge at Gould 'Dr Martin Luther King Blvd' I wondered to myself what they were filming. Too bad I didn't take the time to check it out. They also did some filming at Pearson airport I believe
Gil September 18th, 2007, 07:34 PM I noticed them changing the ads on Sam's exterior last week. I dont know if it was movie related. The spinning discs on Yonge can still be seen.
Thanks for the pics TB. Its looking great, but those gaps still piss me off:@
The first impression I got with the small screens surrounding the larger one was that I was looking at a piece of film! I don't know if that was the effect they were going for or if they serve any other purpose, but they aren't that bad. I don't really notice them (as I'm thinking it's film) when the screen's activated.
Jano September 18th, 2007, 09:24 PM thanks TB, great pics
Marcanadian September 18th, 2007, 09:33 PM Thanks for those shots!
It looks great, I love the little screens surrounding the large one. I'm still a little worried about the spacing, but overall it looks pretty good.

How long before we get an ACTUAL subway exit at that location? Unless it's the lighting aren't the B and D lines supposed to orange?
Tuscani01 September 19th, 2007, 12:39 AM How long before we get an ACTUAL subway exit at that location? Unless it's the lighting aren't the B and D lines supposed to orange?
Well if they keep the prop there, all we need is a hole and some stairs!
jk... the prop looks incredibly cheap up close as does every other prop on the site. Its funny how you cant notice it in pictures or movies... but in person, you can tell they are fake. There is a red information pillar right behind the subway entrance that looks poorly made too. (Just behind the tarp on the left side of the pic i took)
bigcityboy September 19th, 2007, 01:03 AM Unless it's the lighting aren't the B and D lines supposed to be orange?
yep, they are. and the picture's lighting looks perfect so it's a mistake. the 1, 2, 3 & 9 lines are red i believe.
ladyscraper September 19th, 2007, 07:04 AM http://wvs.topleftpixel.com/07/09/17/
here are lots of pictures of the hulk movie set including the very funny shot of the apollo theatre in front of the CIBC building.
Taller, Better September 19th, 2007, 07:56 AM Does anyone know, is it allowed to post photographs from the set of the movie? I assume it is, as they are in the public domain. The other night a set worker did his best to shield all of us from taking photos, with an umbrella. We were standing on the north side of the railings. Any lawyers out there?
401_King September 19th, 2007, 08:44 AM LOL da BIG SLICE will be in the hulk movie lol

T,B, you're the new official SSC paparazzo!
I would figure that if you are standing in a public place you can shoot what you can!
Taller, Better September 19th, 2007, 04:15 PM ^^ I would think it is legal too....but I was wondering if anyone knew for sure
bar1967 September 19th, 2007, 05:34 PM Apparently Google has leased the old Olympic Torch building across from Toronto Life Square. Got this tidbit from UT member 3Dementia.

Ahh!! Very interesting! I was wondering that question two nights ago. This is an exceptionally crap photo, but I suppose soon we will be seeing Googlish things on these billboards:

Google eyes bigger Canadian office
Google Inc. wants to create a mid-sized research and development office in Canada with as many as 200 staff.
“We’re looking to grow aggressively. We think there’s a real opportunity for a Southern Ontario R&D centre,” Shona Brown, the company’s senior vice-president of business operations, said in an interview in Toronto.
The foundations of that office are already in place, following the acquisition last summer of Reqwireless Inc., a startup in Waterloo, Ont., that makes Internet browser and e-mail software for wireless devices.
Google’s website now advertises for just two positions in Waterloo, but Ms. Brown said the company is actually hiring across the board, from directors to fresh engineering graduates.
“We would like to grow a fairly sizable R&D centre there,” ranging between 100 and 200 people, she said. The company is also adding sales and marketing staff in Toronto. Google doesn’t disclose its local headcount, but in Canada it is still small. In Toronto, it doesn’t have its own offices, but rents executive space downtown. Worldwide, the eight-year-old company has about 6,000 employees.

Taller, Better September 19th, 2007, 08:14 PM ^^ That is extremely interesting, and I am happy to hear new jobs will be created there!
Tuscani01 September 19th, 2007, 11:48 PM ^^ I would think it is legal too....but I was wondering if anyone knew for sure
There were some crew members watching me take the picture. I think they were protecting the props... they didnt stop me.

CrazyCanuck September 26th, 2007, 03:55 AM The backside is getting prepped for a billboard(behind the big screen).
noob(but not really) September 26th, 2007, 05:40 PM I've only started looking at this thread in the last couple months. I thought this particular development was called "metropolis". What's with this "Toronto Life Square"?
Taller, Better September 26th, 2007, 07:55 PM Toronto Life (the rag) bought the rights to the naming of the building. Hence
Toronto Lite Square.

You aren't a sock puppet, by any chance? Created to bash me?
isaidso September 27th, 2007, 02:56 AM Don't let some corporate naming rights deal tell you what to call it. Skydome is Skydome, the Royal York is the Royal York, and Metropolis is Metropolis. Toronto Life Square? Please, I don't think so!
metroboi_nay September 27th, 2007, 04:23 AM I will and always will call Skydome, Skydome. Never Rogers Centre or whatever they call it now.
Btw, anyone take any shots of it with the ticker on? lol
Taller, Better September 27th, 2007, 07:39 AM I can never remember the Rogers thing, and everyone knows Skydome, so I use that! LOL! Doubt if I will ever call it Toronto Life Building, but then I doubt if I would have called it Metropolis, either.... Dundas Square kind of encapsulates the whole corner.
ONE HUMAN September 27th, 2007, 05:01 PM You aren't a sock puppet, by any chance? Created to bash me?

metroboi_nay October 1st, 2007, 04:37 PM The video screen is really cool, i like it :) Glad to see they change the ads often so far 3 ads have been in the backlit one in the past few months alone.

The huge section above the screen and the movie poster will be one giant trivision.
Taller, Better October 1st, 2007, 08:53 PM What is a trivision?
Tuscani01 October 1st, 2007, 09:25 PM What is a trivision?
Basically a billboard which is made up of strips. Each strip has 3 sides. When the strips rotate, a new ad is shown. I think the Eaton Centre media tower has some trivision ads.
caltrane74 October 1st, 2007, 10:52 PM So does the media tower at the Atriumn on Bay.

That is what I suspected... wish it had been a MASSIVE tv screen, but thank God it is not a back lit plastic box.
401_King October 2nd, 2007, 08:11 AM Loreal or Futureshop trivision here we go.
CrazyCanuck October 3rd, 2007, 12:34 AM The ad on the North side is massive.

but seriously, ANOTHER futureshop sign! lol
Tuscani01 October 7th, 2007, 07:21 AM Seems like UT is the place to go for updates on TLS.
A new rendering of what the completed TLS will look like... Warning... This might make you sick...

Taller, Better October 7th, 2007, 07:38 AM Was it designed by a blind man? There is little or no cohesion, or design sense. Put together in a mish mash with the result looking like a dog's breakfast of signs.
Tuscani01 October 7th, 2007, 07:53 AM Was it designed by a blind man? There is little or no cohesion, or design sense. Put together in a mish mash with the result looking like a dog's breakfast of signs.
Agreed. So much for my hope that it would turn out alright. I dont even know what can save this building anymore. This maybe?
http://i23.tinypic.com/72axec.jpg
isaidso October 7th, 2007, 08:08 AM It completely lacks balance and proportion. It's plain awful. The embellishments and correlation of all the elements to one another is critical in a project like this. Simply slapping on billboards till the facade is covered doesn't cut it.
The first render may be more vulgar and busy, but that is the nature of this type of structure. It is supposed to be commercialism taken to excess. They should go back to the first render. It works.
Taller, Better October 7th, 2007, 03:08 PM I can't believe they removed the cornice along the top... at least it kind of pulled it all together at the top in a single line. Looks like they are trying to save a few bucks.
teryaki October 7th, 2007, 04:41 PM I really hope it doesn't turn out this way. It looks cluttered and unimaginative. The building looked playful before.
Marcanadian October 7th, 2007, 05:47 PM Well, at least they got rid of some exposed grey sections. But in the process they totally lost any sense of flow.
metroboi_nay October 7th, 2007, 06:08 PM What a disaster. It looks all over the place.
Canadian Chocho October 7th, 2007, 06:57 PM They took the crown away! This went from king to joker!

GridSky October 8th, 2007, 05:10 AM http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff271/voiceofreality/YongeStSouth.jpg
What are they going to do with the back of TLS? I hope they don't leave it completely blank.
As for the redesign, I don't think it's as bad as most of you are making out. A lot of the spots that were uncovered in the original rendering, will be covered. Plus, I'm not sure if the original concept would have looked as good in reality. It looked kinda cartoonish.
Taller, Better October 8th, 2007, 05:18 AM ^^ That is true... especially at night, all the eye will see are the bright signs. The average viewer wouldn't see a difference to have a cornice or not...
it is the overwhelming effect that will be obvious.
vancouverite/to'er October 8th, 2007, 06:13 AM ^^ isn't TORONTO LIFE a free magazine? Our times square sponsered by a free magazine-thats great:lol:
Taller, Better October 8th, 2007, 06:30 AM Nay... believe it or not they charge for it! They have a good restaurant listing.
Frank magazine (my heros) called it Toronto Lite.

urban 2.0 October 8th, 2007, 07:36 AM Agreed. So much for my hope that it would turn out alright. I dont even know what can save this building anymore. This maybe?

.. in defense of the revised rendering - its the perspective of the older drawing that makes it look more sophisticated than it really is.
I think the new rendering is close to the previous one - they clearly choose that perspective as to make it look less like a wall of ads.
What's missing is some flare at the top of the structure - some building elements that will add some pizzaz to the building.
urban 2.0 October 8th, 2007, 07:41 AM ^^ isn't TORONTO LIFE a free magazine? Our times square sponsered by a free magazine-thats great:lol:
Hmmm isn't Toronto Life trying to "rename" a public square?
Think Toronto Life Square is in reference to the building - at Yonge and Dundas square - so they shouldn't have the right to name the building that - right?
Think Coke Cola Square, Wal-Mart Square.
Toronto Life should also be paying the city for some money - how long before people start calling Yonge and Dundas - Toronto Life Square.
.... the commercialization of public space continues...

Maybe the city can buy some ad space on Toronto Life Square to promote Yonge-Dundas Square.
How confusing would that be for visitors, lol!
Epi October 8th, 2007, 08:53 AM Anyone know why the current giant video screen has all those little boxes of screens as a border? Do you think they did it because they think it looks cool, or because it's cheaper than one really big video screen? It seems like when they are airing most things, the little boxes act as if they were actually part of the big screen (sort of like windows into a bigger screen behind it) instead of doing anything funky... makes the whole thing just look incredibly weird.
Jaye101 October 8th, 2007, 09:28 AM I'm actually in denial about that rendering.

I doubt very much if anyone will confuse the two, and start calling Yonge Dundas "Toronto Life Square". I've not heard a soul do so.

I'm actually thinking the exact opposite. The only reason why no one has mixed them up thus far is because the only people that know that that building will be called Toronto Life Square is us on this site. Once the signs go up, I can see Dundas square going extinct.

Yes i was just going to say that. The ads are nearly in the same locations, all that is missing is the coke and McD's symbols at the top. The newer design also has more windows on the front. But other than that its very close.
Jano October 8th, 2007, 08:16 PM As originally stated by Tuscani01 when he posted those pics, its just a "rendering" ... lets be patient and not over-react yet, hopefully it will all turn out well

bigcityboy October 8th, 2007, 08:54 PM after all these years i'm just excited to finally have "something" there. but in the end, that's all it really is, isn't it? something. but not much of anything. it's truly unfortunate. this should have been a major, world-class development with a tower stretching high into the sky. penequity really did a crappy, cheap-out job - on both this and the ex-torch building. my fave structures are still the buildings on the south side of the square. the one with the white facade is spectacular looking to this day.
Jaye101 October 8th, 2007, 09:20 PM The city should be the only entity able to name something "square."
Taller, Better October 9th, 2007, 09:34 AM But tell that to "Square One"! (which I visited once, and found to be very square). caltrane74 October 9th, 2007, 04:05 PM I'll say this, the building will evolve over time. Look at the Atrium on Bay...it started out rather bland, but now it's not so bad, and is almost as ad filled as Metropolis. ( maybe more)
Last I check the Atrium on Bay has 2 video screens, Metropolis will only have 1 video screen; and the Atrium on Bay was never designed to be an ad filled building. It just evolved into what it is due to its location at the heart of Yonge and Dundas.
401_King October 9th, 2007, 04:49 PM hopefully we see it evolve to dundas east !

Mollywood October 10th, 2007, 02:06 AM I, for one, will not be calling Dundas Square, "Toronto Life Square", I can guarantee you that.
Now that they have come out with this latest update render, I am concerned that those big, ugly, boxy things (what are those called anyway?) will be quite noticeable on the roof. Pen Equity did that on Torch. Right above where the restaurant was, you have these big, green mechanical things that should never be exposed on a building because they are so ugly and very easy to hide. It was supposed to be hidden by the large signs, but as always, Pen Equity cheaped out.
The original rendering had a decorative roof element, which would have blocked the nasty things from view but good old Pen Equity has done it again. Now we have the new artists rendering, which just shows the tips of them but the reality is, that they stick right up, very visible from Dundas Square and also the Yonge st. side. It's bad enough that they used that shanty-town siding all over this thing but to remove the roof element and have those nasty vents showing is pushing it too far. I say, stop Pen Equity now before Toronto looks like one big third world shanty-town. (exaggeration, YES but Pen Equity has done enough damage in this town) SHEESH, I'm pissed!

caltrane74 October 10th, 2007, 02:44 AM Oh yes, we will all love it. Faced with a construction site for almost 10 years, Pen Equity could have thrown up a mud hut, and we would've still gone nuts for it.

Dino Domingo October 10th, 2007, 04:10 AM Wow... this had so much potential. They need another giant screen on this building in order to salvage the design from all the revisions that have been made.
Taller, Better October 10th, 2007, 04:04 PM I don't think the loss of the unifying cornice is going to be that big of an effect when it is completed. From a standpoint of pure design, it is a dog's breakfast. From the standpoint of reality, it is going to look like most of the rest of the signage in the square that has been completed. Few spectators looking up will see anything but a bunch of flashing lights and signs; they will do the same thing they do now, and that is stand with their mouths open a bit and gawk.
Mollywood October 10th, 2007, 06:44 PM They are going to see 2 ugly mechanical boxes sticking right out of the top. In such a prominent place, that's unacceptable. Most buildings now cover them up. Without the roof elements, I think it's pretty nasty. Look at the Torch, you can't help but see them so prominent on top. It makes the building look unfinished. There should be a citywide regulation on all new buildings, no visible clutter on roofs.

You are probably right.... I can't see them in the new rendering, but I am sure they are there. To me the sad part of it is that it is a lost opportunity for them to use the cornice at the top to not only unify, but it could have been some pretty spectacular bad-ass massive neon lettering. It does kind of look like someone is going through with a red pencil and seeing where they can cut costs and maximize profit.

New member of SSC here from Dallas, TX.
First off, I LOVE Toronto. Been there twice last year when Toronto Life Square was still under construction.
Reading the posts, I can see the general consensus is that this project is a disappointment.
I am not an architect and certainly not an expert about architectural design in any way shape or form, but I actually REALLY LOVE the project, and so will the thousands of non-architecture-types that will walk through the square everyday! C'mon, it's not THAT bad is it?
I can only hope something like this will happen in downtown Dallas, but I will probably have to wait well into the 27th century for that to happen....
iliamo October 11th, 2007, 01:54 AM I agree with Roger72075, the new render isnt really that bad, it might be a bit more simple than the original, but it shows more class, and not just a ton of adds overlapping on a wall. Just in my opinion, the original was nice, just a bit messy and mixed up. The new render, however, has everything organized.

I think people are being too quick to judge this structure. Once all the signage is up - then we can really assess it's success.
Remember this building will evolve over time, improvements will be made. But it's a great start - sure beats the Harvey's and the Flee Market.

metroboi_nay October 11th, 2007, 05:23 AM Times Sq is really cool, I love it. It does get boring tho after you've gone for the past 7 years in a row tho (I have friends in the city, so I got a reason to go.. lol) Dundas Sq won't be like that, but why would we want to? It's best to have our own type of sq.
There's other examples too, like Trafalgar Sq in London and the one in Tokyo. They're unique and that's how it should be, not a copy. They are similar cos ads are in place but the area ain't. I would hate to see Trafalgar Sq like Times Sq, it would look hideous for the surrounding.
In terms of "Metropolis", atleast its not an empty hole and something is there. It's true with time it'll develop like the Atrium ;)

New TKTS Now on Track for Fall
When the stalwart seventies-era TKTS booth in Father Duffy Square — it's not Times Square, mind you, but the square just north of it — came down a year ago, we were promised a new version, complete with a shiny red staircase as a roof, a public space to rival Rome's Spanish Steps, in time for last New Year's Eve. No dice. What happened? An ownership change at the manufacturer originally slated to provide glass for that new hull derailed things, architect Nick Leahy of Perkins Eastman tells us. But the team is finalizing its choice for a new supplier, Leahy says, and expects the goods by late summer. "It was a hiccup that we managed," Leahy says. "The ticket booth is in place and the geothermal heating [underground] is in place, and I would expect installation by early fall." Which means it'll be ready for next New Year's or whatever autumn events — the World Series on the Jumbotron, the Macy's parade, impeachment hearings — you might be looking forward to. —Alec Appelbaum

My experience has been that the ones who are the most vocal about being 3rd rate and striving for greatness, are infact, the same rubes who are actually standing in the way of it.
Irony...the only true evidence that their may be a god....and man, does he have a cruel sense of humour.

I guess the Big Screen will be going up next Sunday? ... do a sense a road closure (I'll get the Star on the story)
Epi October 16th, 2007, 04:24 AM I actually quite like the whole Toronto Life Square and Dundas square thing. When it first came about, I had some doubts, but it's really blossomed into something great. It would be even cooler though if they retrofitted some of the surrounding buildings with building sized video screens like the buildings in Shanghai, but then again those only look good from far away :x

Most of my comments are made in jest. And believe me I'm the antithesis of emo. Emo people don't complain they whine and slit their wrists and have brutal fashion sense. I wear plaid and yetti fur long johns.

Hallelujah is beautiful but no where near his best work. All those others you mentioned are just typical folkies. Buckley was the most eclectic musician i've ever heard. Pete Yorn and Joseph Arthur are huge Buckley fans but I don't know about the others.

In your opinion. Because you say it, doesn't make it so, other than in your own mind. That's called being subjective and opinionated, and not necessarily correct.
You're one of those people that acts as if you know everything and that your opinion is the only one that matters. You exhibit this day in and day out on this forum. You would do well to take a step back and realize at your young age you don't have everything figured out and there is room for an open mind and some objectivity.

not that blogto is a supremely credible source (http://www.blogto.com/city/2007/04/dundas_square_meet_toronto_life_square/), but as late as April 2007, that's 6 months ago, people were still under the assumption that the hall of fame was going to open up here.
what happened? does anyone know? and is the torch building a possibility?
Steeltown October 18th, 2007, 05:09 AM Once you propose to change the venue of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame you have to open up the bidding process again, that's what I've heard.
A few years ago Toronto won the Hall of Fame bid but nothing materialized so the bidding process was opened and Toronto won again. Once again nothing materialized.

... maybe they should hire PenEquity to find and build them a venue - you know to speed up the process.
I still think they should use the silos for this project.

That Ryerson bldg at Bay is very nice looking, design-wise at least. Personally I would've liked it better if it was taller. Otherwise, it's great. I don't understand why it gets bashed all the time. Maybe it's the parking lot across the street that makes it look unfinished :dunno:

As is Spoonman. Jeff and Chris Cornell were good friends while he was alive. He and his band opened up for Soundgarden in '94.

How do you know my age? I am very open to other opinions when it comes to music. I just don't think anyone can compare to Jeff Buckley. He's the one artist that had something extra special. I just find people like Yorn and Arthur to be one dimensional, musically and vocally. Jeff was a jazz crooner, a bluesman, a rocker, a soul singer, he even sang Qawwali music in Urdu. Nobody does stuff like that. Check out his other work, aside from Grace if you haven't. But I'll leave it at that. Ben Harper said it best. "Never have I seen such infinite ability in any artist. And it's all just gone. It's chilling."

I do recall reading that the building is design for vertical expansion which I agree would improve the overall aesthetics. The ground level currently overpowers the main facade of randomize panels above.

Yep... and they should have built it to its full height considering there is a need for space at Ryerson.

I'm so tired of arguing about subjective things like music and architecture with know-it-all kids. Because you like something or say it's great doesn't necessarily make it better than something else. And if you're not a kid, then what's your excuse?
Whether an artist/musician is multi-dimensional or extra special doesn't matter to me. What matters is how it sounds coming out of my speakers or in my headphones, and your opinion -- believe it or not -- simply isn't a factor. Thanks for coming out though.
