I'm visiting a friend in the U.K. this summer and there is one airline that seems to have a flight for a day trip I'd like to take but they are so damn expensive. So for anyone who knows, why is Eastern Airways so damn expensive? It seem to be the most convenient airline in Britian for travel to small cities but they cost alot.

It looks like the airline I need for a day trip but expensive. A round trip flight from Bournemouth where I will be staying to Aberdeen is around $350 while Ryanair can fly you to a place like Dublin for $40 round trip.

They server provincial routes that no one else does (such as Newcastle - Norwich and a lot of the routes out of Aberdeen), I guess not many people use them, only business people travelling on expenses, so they probably a) can charge a lot and b) need to. Take the train instead Britain is a small country.

Bournemouth to aberdeen? I wouldn't call that madness unless Bristol to Amsterdam by plane is also madness.

At best it's a 10hour rail journey compared to 1hr45min flight. Even my time isn't worth the difference, especially when on vacation.

Eastern operate a certain model. Fly routes without competition and charge high fares. They work off high yield rather than high volume. Take the Manchester - Norwich route which they have operated for a number of years. Flybe enter the market with their low fares and Eastern pull out because they won't compete on price.

Hey FM2258, why not fly from Bournemouth (BOH) to Glasgow Prestwick airport (PIK) with ryanair (~$35 return) (about 1hr flight) and then via train from Prestwick airport to Aberdeen (~$80 return) (around 3hr50mins).

I travel from Humberside to Aberdeen and vice versa every few weeks with Eastern, they do seem quite expensive - 170 odd quid single fair, thank god my firm pays! You get a couple of boiled sweets, 1 or 2 quick drinks and a snack, all you can cram into the flight! I think tho they have many connections with oil and support companies certainly on their Aberdeen flights, and those lot can pay thru the nose for anything.

That's interesting. I'll see what I can find.

Also I was talking to my friend and he was saying that you had to wait two hours before flights in Britian and there will be long lines to wait for the plane. Is a day trip from Bournemouth or Southampton to one of the cities in Scotland a reasonable trip timewise by air? I have to admit I'm just as much in it for the British flying experience just as I want to see a bit of Scotland as well.

My frined will be at work from the morning until about 6:00pm so while he's at work instead of watching TV, I'd like to have a little personal long distance trip. :) What do you guys think?

I think you would be better flying to Amsterdam, Paris, or Brussels than scotland if you are flying very short haul for the sake of it (all around 1hr or less from Bournemouth/southampton.

Check out thompsonfly.com for some very reasonable tickets

Otherwise, travel from bournemouth to other british cities is very limited and you might want to try bigger airports in the region like Bristol or southampton

Click the below link and click on the names of the cities to see all routes from those airports and links to booking websites:
