Nominating Guidelines:

NOTE As this is a forum about architecture, this is not about the technology or the subway cars. Please try to focus on the architecture of the subway stations.
NEW It must be absolutely clear that you intend to nominate something. Therefore, each nomination must be preceded by "I nominate ...".
Make sure to include the official name of the nomination, as well as where it is located - city, and country.
All nominations require pictures to accompany them. Post pictures only, not links to websites with pictures. Post only the best pictures that represent your nomination accurately, and in the best way possible. Avoid posting large pictures or panoramas, instead include links to them.
Only two (2) nominees per country are allowed. Therefore, choose only the most distinctive, exceptional nominees. Basically, the best in the country! It's a good idea to discuss the nominations with your fellow countrymen, and posters, so that everyone comes to an agreement about what should be nominated. If more nominees are posted per country, only the first two will be considered.
Since there are only 15 spots on the poll, the first 15 valid nominations will be submitted. To avoid disappointment, post your nominations as early as possible. To make sure that your nominations are not late, you can even post the nomination without any pictures first, and edit them in later.

And I nominate Kharkiv, Ukraine.

So it's Kyiv and Kharkiv for Ukraine. Don't anybody rush, треба добре підібрати найкращі з станцій і щоб якість фоток була гарною ;)

VelesHomais

Sergei, I think you should specify how many stations to be presented per city. We don't want 100 pics per city. Unless you meant 2 stations to be nominated altogether, then both will be Kyiv.

Pavlo

Авжеж, треба трохи порити і подумати які саме станції показувати.

Or I guess a bit over, but either way, we'll get almost all of them

VelesHomais
June 7th, 2006, 05:40 AM
Actually there are 16 subways in EE :D but since its only 2 per country, we wont fill that much in anyway

I nominate the Prague Metro, in the Czech Republic. When I first used it, it looked like any other communist era subway/metro system. Since then it's been flooded, its recovered after the flooding, it has now been modernized and extended.

Well that is perfect, if Sergei allows it, we could use them all, or at least the 2 per country.
But I think Athens, Istanbul, Kyiv, Moscow and somebody else like Warsaw or Prague will be the top 5, then the rest is behind

Kyiv has both modern and classical stations. But of course I prefer classical, modern is too boring and its all the same everywhere in the world. Plus "modern" doesn't stay modern and what looks modern now will look cheap in 20 years.

Station "Institut'ska". Busts of important historical, cultural figures are present in the marbel walls. One of my favourites.

Prague Metro system is currently 54.8 km long with 54 stations, in 2005 it served 496 millions passangers which is about 1,3 millions passangers per average day. (The record was in 1992 when it served 629 millions people).

soviet (or stalin empire style has gone in 1953). as of design - moscow is always modern. as of hitech (i suppose you called it modern) there are also hitech stations in moscow.

not everybody likes soviet looking stations, I preffer modern look of metros in Prague or Warsaw.
I'd like to see more Warsaw stations, but I just want to say I don't understand what all the fuss is about the Prague metro. They stations that have been shown are not even that modern, it's like what was considered modern in 1980's.

And as coth said, Moscow has some really nice modern stations. I remember seeing new pictures of a brand-spanking-new station in Moscow City.

As for the Moscow stations, I think many stations don't necessarily look Soviet, but rather old and historical. You can see much of this architecture in many Western countries as well.

Besides other things, generally I don't like stations with massive columns and kind of central tunnel for passengers. In such a kind of stations I feel little claustrophobic.

What's with you and population? When you say biggest, be sure that's what you mean. Because that way, Moscow wins. If you mean the best for it's population, perhaps it's Prague.

Some of the photos posted in previous pages are really great!!!
Moscow is because of its size and its history on the top of the list in my opinion...
I like also the very modern metro of Warsaw and Prague , Istanbul has a nice metro too and with a brilliant future as it seems with all these projects running...

regarding Athens metro :

The metro system is relatively small for the size of Athens but its advantage is that it is new , well constructed , there was use of high quality materials (like attic marble) and in the center of the city the stations are small musea.
The network is 30km underground and total length ~52 Km.
It has not to do with stations but I like especially the new trainsets(2004) that are in use in the line Monastiraki-Airport . They are fully airconditioned , with almost no noise inside , very clean , with screens inside for information about the stations etc. (the other trainsets used are quite old fashioned and ugly)

lol, i doubt Istanbul have enough money to build 500km within 10 years. more like within 80 years. and of course other metro systems does not stays without development. moscow plans to build at least 56km until 2012. 16km will be open in next year and half. moscow has in plans hundreds kilometers. not even half of all plan is built.

Anyone who doesn't pick Moscow is being quite foolish. In addition to having probably the best looking metro system of any city in the world, it has either the highest or second highest ridership in the world (there is a dispute between Moscow and Tokyo' numbers). Additionally, it goes everywhere and is reliable and cheap. Istanbul is awesome and all, but the public transport is a mess. Maybe after Marmaray and some extensions are completed it will have a shot at the top 5, but constantly switching between metros, light rail, suburban trains, and funiculars is a nightmare. Moscow all the way!

Comparing city size Warsaw has currently much more developed metro network than Istanbul. Both have comparable length. Current projects and constructions in Istanbul are impressive, but It's still future not presence. The same case is when You compare Prague and Kyiv. Both Warsaw (aspecially as a euro2012 hosting city) and Prague also have plans for development of their networks.

First of all I wasnt talking about size only, I dont know about Warsaw and Prague, but in many ex-Soviet cities, the commies built amazing looking subways. In terms of size I think you may be right. I had a quick browse and found that probably Athens and Prague has a bigger subway than Warsan/Istanbul. Dont know about any statistical information though.

When it comes to design, I just love Prague Metro. You can also argue which design is better: modern in Warsaw or massive socrealistic in Kyiv.

If we compare metro systems in whole such as network and lenght of the lines Istanbul shouldn't be mentioned in this thread since the city has a network lenght of a midsize city. Ok right now 145(including marmaray) km of new lines is u/c but they will be finished by 2009-2011. And if we compare the way the stations and vehciles etc.. look Istanbuöl has done great job espcially the new stations of Marmaray will be huge and ultra modern.

This Thread should have name: "Best subway in EE after Moscow's..."

There is no sense comparising Moscow's palaces to other metro systems... It,s one of the seven technical wonders of world. So what, that trains aren't as modern as in London or Madrid... Stations and size of whole net is not to beat.

Imo the second place should go to Kiev (for the same reason as Moscow) and third to Budapest and Prague.

Yes, it is true also about size. No need to compare huge Moscow metro with others.

But recently Warsaw and Athens look great! And why don't anybody mentions Minsk? It's new stations are good and modern.

I like Moscow metro very much. Although i havent visited it, i can tell from the pictures that they have used very high quality materials. And the design is not too modern, it keeps some of the glamour of the past, when even the simplest thing had to be a small work of art...

I like also our metro system, here in Athens. I especially like how some of the stations ( especially Syntagma & Monastiraki ) combine the ancient with the modern. Very nice work.
