View Full Version : Thesies - A game made and based in Athens
Giorgio June 7th, 2006, 10:14 AM I came across a brilliant new game that is being made for the PC and Xbox360.
I dont usually play too many games but this has me very interested.
From the official site:
Introduction
Thesis is a conspiracy-fantasy adventure set in modern-day Athens, where an a couple of adventurous paranormal researchers find themselves caught between the mundane and the supernatural, following the clues of a long-lost ancient artifact that could spell disaster or ascension for the entire human race.
Features
A griping story that emerges and places you in an Athens full of marvel, danger and back-stage scheming just beneath the surface of everyday life.
- Player can choose to play as one of the paranormal researchers.
- Multiple endings according to the decisions made in the game.
- A wide variety of puzzles based on both Greek Mythology and mind-boggling conundrums that captivate the player.
- Colorful characters and localities, ranging from neo-classical buildings to the grim depths of Hades.
- Being created first for PC platform and possibly for next gen consoles.
- Innovative customized new power graphic engine created to take the player to realistic heights.
- Dynamic original music score written which enchants with the emotional atmosphere it creates.
For those with good connections who want to see the trailor, I highly recommend it. It looks like a very good story:

A nice new industry in Greece is emerging.

gm2263 June 7th, 2006, 01:10 PM Are these the heroes? Well they look as Greek as they can be :)

Will come out at about christmas.
The story and trailor is brilliant. Now If they can get the gameplay right this will be a massive hit.
I think its great that we have Greek industry in gaming now and hopefully we will be able to see some of modern day athens shots in-game...not just the underground hades areas.
Very promising title.
Giorgio June 7th, 2006, 03:35 PM Also, the dialogue will be all in Ancient Greek!

KONSTANTINOUPOLIS June 7th, 2006, 04:56 PM Don't like it. All the characters looks like criminals, and they are ugly too.
Where is the "Kalos"?
and surely this duo is not your average Hellenic couple. They are ordinary Hollywood type caraticatures.

A very nice adventure game was the Odyssey - The Search for Ulysses ( back in the 2001 ).
There was also a Hellenic version of the game where all the dialogues ( text and vocals ) were exclusively in Hellenic.

GrigorisSokratis June 7th, 2006, 08:15 PM Some months ago I started working on a game (GTA alike) based on the street of Athens. Unfortunately this works takes too much time (specially anything regarding the engine programming issue). So far and since the project was abandoned 3 months ago to this date I've only managed to make Syntagma square area, but such games require a large coverage (specially nowadays when games like GTA San Andreas, Mafia or the Godfather are rendering entire cities), and this kind of works flood the cababilities of a
single man.
Also I've considered the idea of hiring some kinda staff of designers and programmers but that exceeds my budget by far :( .
krainer June 7th, 2006, 08:34 PM Your work sounds really interesting, can we see like a still or sth of Syntagma square? I'm learning programming too, but my knowledge is limited for now. I hope you get to finish it all some day!
savas June 7th, 2006, 09:16 PM i still think it is a great effort.... i especially love that they use Ancient Hellenic, unfortunately it is long time ago that i learnd it....
gm2263 June 7th, 2006, 09:36 PM I saw the video... Incredible graphics, unbelievable terrain, multiple characters. I will certainly buy it!!! And yes, I liked the fact that they spoke in Ancient Greek. Very original.
The last game that I saw with Greek content was the official 2004 Olympic games PC game. Didn't like it that much. This one is from another dimension.... :)
Skaros June 7th, 2006, 09:58 PM ']Also, the dialogue will be all in Ancient Greek!

skylinearth June 7th, 2006, 10:39 PM It would be a great idea to make a new GTA for Greece, maybe in the next years...
GTA3: New York
GTA Vice City: Miami
GTA San Andreas: Los Santos ( Los Angeles ) San Fierro ( San Francisco ) and Las Venturas ( Las Vegas )
GTA4: Propably London

I saw the trailer and i changed my mind, it looks neat ( well the characters remains ugly ), the dialogues in ancient Hellenic is a big plus, the graphics looks very good.
I am hoping-waiting for a demo to see how the gameplay is.
Christos7 June 7th, 2006, 11:51 PM Guys, the trailor only plays for a few seconds (after they bang on the door) then stops for me... whats wrong?
gm2263 June 8th, 2006, 12:47 AM Try to play it with a different player than the one you are using. It has to be playable...
Prometheus June 8th, 2006, 08:51 AM Wonderul find!
Some years ago, for the first time in my 10 years of reading PC Gamer I saw a review for a Greek developed adventure game (can't remember the name though). I was psyched. Too bad. It was buggy, ugly, and had terrible gameplay. It scored somewhere near 20%. The developers wrote in and chided the magazine for not supporting foreign/small developers, explaining how this was their first game etc. The mag published it and defended it's review. It was indeed an awful game.
Oh well I thought. Probably I will never see good work from Greek game developers.
But this one looks smart, stylish, and gorgeous. Production values seem to be high, and the ancient Greek is pure class. It seems to have a great storyline too. Hopefully it comes out great in all aspects.
Developers from "poorer" (loosely) eastern European countries have been making good games and sending them here for 10+ years now. It's time Greek devs step up. There's no reason they should be behind.

PC and xbox 360! Wow! How far it's come from the review I read in PC Gamer. I thought that was the extent of Greek game development.
Prometheus June 8th, 2006, 08:53 AM Guys, the trailor only plays for a few seconds (after they bang on the door) then stops for me... whats wrong?
It's a large vid. It has to load. Use quicktime you can view the process and see how much you've downloaded.
Giorgio June 8th, 2006, 01:51 PM Giorgo, does it really take place in modern Athens? I got the feeling that they somehow travel back in time. I may be wrong.
The game takes place in modern athens however the catch is that the most part is in the 'underworld' which in fantasy lies beneth the streets of our very own Athens!
Basically, The Music sounds brilliant...very epic.
The story sounds sensational.
The trailor is one of the best I have ever seen.
Excuse my comment on ancient greek being the language used. I believe they will use Ancient Greek for the cutscenes and gameplay actually in Ancient Greece and most likely english for modern scenes.
The trailor shows how the adventure began. Thesies, a scroll of ancient text, is hidden by some guy in what appears to be hades.
The game is in Athens today when two journalists set out to break the mystery.
Extremely promising.
And please guys, no talk of other games in this thread thanks.

Yes, when I click it automatically opens with quicktime, and I can see the bar how much it DL however it only DL about 20% of the video, it reaches that point and starts all over. It will not play the whole file. I also DL it into my computer instead of just clicking the link, same thing happens. I tried to open it with a variety of programs, still same thing. I have no clue why. It only plays a few seconds and thats it.
epsilon5 June 9th, 2006, 12:28 AM There is another game company in Greece that makes FMV adventures. It is located in Drama. Here is an interview of theirs next adventure game "Conspiracies 2".

greecelightning July 18th, 2007, 02:33 PM Impressive and realistic... Although the screenshots depict a somewhat "sub-par" area, the atmosphere is ideal for a video game - with a mysterious undertone. Of course, it goes without saying that any big city will have areas with this kind of graffiti and paper/trash. Thankfully though, no video game in Athens will ever be able to show anything close to ghettos...
I'm a little confused. Is this game on the market or is it still in development? Is the area depicted a real area in Athens? If so, where? I'd like to see more!
Giorgio July 18th, 2007, 03:04 PM It is in development still.
Will be released on PC, XBOX360 and PS3 in September I believe.

GrigorisSokratis July 18th, 2007, 06:30 PM Wow, the ambient illumination of the renderer is awesome, the same goes for the level....Looks like the guy of the other project based in Athens will have a hard work to make it better than this :)
greecelightning July 18th, 2007, 07:41 PM So I walked down "Ηφαιστου" Street today, as is shown in one of the shots. It is a street just off Monastiraki Square, but the area shown in the shots does not exist (as far as I could tell). Cheers!

Yeap it's an imaginary city but resembling Athens (as in GTA Liberty City, Vica City or Los Santos resemble NY, Miami and LA respectively). However, those pics remind me of Psiri.
As far as the level regards the guys are doing a superb work, as for the shaders they're using, well, c'est magnifique!
I wonder what Game Engine they're working with or they programmed it themselves.
Giorgio July 19th, 2007, 06:05 AM I don't think its an "imaginary" city, from what I gathered it is actually meant to be set in Athens.
But the area is definitely imaginary.
The roads look very narrow though, almost like its a back ally!
