Greenpoint Common will look something like this, with all the tents and hospitality and media areas, so will durban...joburg will of course use nasrec...
Durbsboi June 8th, 2006, 03:22 PM Its gonna be great! Cant wait for the final, I want to see what SA has instore for the world! Maybe they'll do like what India did for the Commi's in Melbourne? ooohh Exciting!
I like that thing in Germany outside the Parliment, they constructed a "mini" Berlin stadium, so cool!

there will be no delhi dance festival at any closing ceremony...just an unveiling of an emblem and a concert after that...
Durbsboi June 8th, 2006, 06:02 PM Dam! was hoping Danny had something special planned!
oh well, predictions anyone?
I dont want Brazil to win, dont ask me why, they have good players, they play fair, & they are the most honest team ever, but I dont like them :dunno:
I have so many teams to watch for, but since being an avid English Premiership viewer I have that sense that England is a second "home" team so to speak, so looking forward to see them do well , but there's so many other good teams, like Spain, Czech Rep, France, Argentina, Sweden, Holland, then you also want the guys from Africa to do well, Angola, Ivory Coast, & so on, then you have the underdogs Australia, USA,...but then there's Germany, the host's that will want to impress infront of their nation, so its a tough one to call!
Player that will impress the most in the tournament?
1. Steven Gerrard
2. Ronaldhino
3. Eto
4. Shevcenko
5. Peter Crouch (Robo-Crouch)
6. Drogba
Its good to see that there is so much to look forward too in this competition!
What time the opening ceremony SA time?
Mo Rush June 8th, 2006, 08:06 PM 4pm...its not really an "opening ceremony" the opening ceremony got cancelled..but im sure there'll be an opening of some sort...
Cigar June 8th, 2006, 08:21 PM ...the opening ceremony got cancelled..but im sure there'll be an opening of some sort...
Why? Thats a bit bizarre...
dysan1 June 8th, 2006, 08:29 PM England do well?? not a chance. they spend all their time worrying about poor fucking rooney, the tosser that cant even speak a word of english and he grew up there!! If they think they cant win without him then they are in a sorry state. they have no Big Match Temperment...i;d love it if they fell in the first round...
To win? i think Germany as hosts and finalist last time have a good shot, its amazing how much home advantage pays in this event (look at france...south korea and japan..)
Mo Rush June 8th, 2006, 08:40 PM Why? Thats a bit bizarre...

Opening ceremony for 2006 World Cup cancelled E-mail
Friday, 13 January 2006
FIFA have cancelled the opening gala for the World Cup finals in Germany thought to be because of mounting costs - rumoured to be £17mn and slow ticket sales.
Sepp Blatter said "FIFA hasn't taken a decision to cancel lightly but sporting considerations are crucial". Blatter went on "I would like to thank artistic director Andre Heller and everyone involved for their commitment and their understanding of this decision. Personally, I still think the idea of holding such a high-profile opening event is a good one."
A statement on the FIFA website said: "We still believe in the considerable merits of a separate opening event and will work on proposals regarding the possibility of holding such an event in 2010."
dysan1 June 8th, 2006, 09:43 PM hmmm...i think a simple event before the opening match is the best thing anyway
Mo Rush June 8th, 2006, 10:33 PM hmmm...i think a simple event before the opening match is the best thing anyway
of course i disagree..lol just build one big floating stage that wont damage the pitch and do something similar to melbourne...

13 January 2006?????????? Where the hell have I been. Bloody university - I need a social life. Well at least I'm not the only sod who didn't know about that - someone at varsity was bitching about not being able to find the opening ceremony on DSTV.
Go Angola!!! Geographically they're the closest to RSA and so in theory should be getting all of our support. Realistically I'd put money on the German's or maybe the Dutch as outsiders.
Mo Rush June 9th, 2006, 02:24 AM cousin wins mastercard trip to germany for 2, and im writing exams...just really perfect urrrgh F@ #$%#$% #$ @$# @#$ @ $$3
Harkeb June 9th, 2006, 05:26 AM From what Ive heard here in Korea, the opening ceremony is at 9pm German time, tonight- that be 4am Sat morning in Korea.
Durbsboi June 9th, 2006, 09:07 AM England do well?? not a chance.
I know it sounds silly, but if you have watched the players perform for their various teams, then you would know what I am talkin about, currently england have the two best midfielders in the world (Lampard & Gerrard), & their 3rd midfielder is the the famous guy that likes to bend balls, their defence make take some re-arrangement, Terry is the best centre back in the world, proven! Rio Fedi-arse, his the worry for me, Jammie Carra (unofficially the best center back in the world) Neville......his okay.
Strikers? Owen = World Class
Crouch= the biggest surprise to surprise the English!!!
Walcott = Never seen him play in my life so we cant judge
Rooney = Fat headed bloke who likes to pound the ball into the back of the net
I know what your'll might be thinking, good squad on paper, but cant transform the tallent onto the field, that is true, their manager is a tart, thinking he'll use the best to get the best, he cant find a way for them to work, but if this England team is desperate & plays as a unit & each guy gives 110% they can do it.
About the perception that if Rooney aint there they cant do it, thats all what the press think, the squad itself isnt so phased about it, all the FA said was that, it was sad that they wont have him for the group stages, but they have the players that can do the job to see them through the stage into the knockouts.
But as I said in my previous post, there are soo many other teams which have great players in them, you dont know who to support!
oh & Dys, I get what you saying about Germany being the host & they will want to perform, but of recent their form has been abit below par, but I'm sure they will have a good tounermant!
Under 8 hours to go!!!
Mo Rush June 10th, 2006, 03:16 AM The rail station within walking distance of Allianz Arena. The design is very similar to new rail stations proposed at Olympic Venue for the Cape Town 2004 Olympic Bid. I think the site plans and management of the area surrounding the stadium is vital when it comes to crowd control. 80,000 people leaving or entering an area at the same time needs large walk spaces, boulevards and esplanades to ensure they are able to reach the stadium safely from the nearest transport hub.

Mo Rush June 10th, 2006, 06:13 AM Opening ceremony falls flat
By Naveed Raja, Staff Reporter
Dubai: Where would we be without opening ceremonies?
Without an insight into the clinical madness in minds of the people who come up with this stuff, for one.
Germany 2006 got underway with the de rigeur psychedelic affair that we've come to expect from these events.
Scores of lederhosen-clad gentlemen beating drums or performing a thigh-slapping dance? Check.
Models dressed in somewhat impractical outfits seemingly designed by Pete Doherty after a big night out? Check.
The utterly bizarre sight of lines of German men enthusiastically banging their groins into large metal bells? You guessed it.
There was also a quite appalling band apparently performing a hip hop track. They were so bad the German crowd resolutely refused to get off their seats - coming from a nation which loves the music of David Hasselhof that's as bigger snub as they come.
Time for a quick star turn by a girl dressed as Napoleon (your guess is as good as mine) before the main event.
Clutching the World Cup Pele took centre stage as he walked up to the stage with German supermodel Claudia Schiffer.
At age 35 Claudia looked as good as ever and the grin on Pele's face suggested the Brazilian legend thought the same.
Who knows Schiffer may have cured Pele of his "medical problem" for which he advertises those pills all over the world. No matter where you travel, how diverse the countries, they all have people who drink water, breathe air and watch adverts where Pele advises you to get help for your erection problems.
In a nice touch 170 players who have won the World Cup - including two from Uruguay's victory in 1930 and a veritable army of Brazilians - then came on to the pitch to soak up the acclaim of the crowd.
There was a comic scene near the end when 1994 World Cup winner Mauro Silva asked a child to take a picture of a who's who of stars from Brazil who had lined-up for a photo. Given the chance of a lifetime the kid snubbed him and walked on. The youth of today eh?
joburg June 10th, 2006, 11:01 AM I support Togo. :)
And I think that train station is pretty, will go well with CT.
And last thing... I'm a bit nervous about 2010 now. From what I've seen, Germany has set us a very high precedent!
Matthias Offodile June 10th, 2006, 01:32 PM It would be nice to see an African football team win but I doubt that it will happen, honestly said. Côte d´ivoire won´t have a chance to win against Argentina tonight (even though Didier Drogba might harbour some suprises)
Holland is playing well...but I think that Brazil will take the Cup home. Germany won´t take it. Saw the game yesterday Costa Rica - Germany?. Germany played terribly (altghough they won). Michael Ballack (upon whom many pin down their hopes) could not play due to a severe injury....
Let´s wait and see :)
cladiv June 10th, 2006, 01:35 PM Dont be so pessimistic about Ivory Coast, I think they have a fair chance to get a positive result against Argentina, I think they are the best african team in the WC this year.
Mo Rush June 10th, 2006, 03:02 PM I support Togo. :)

i am nervous too while the larger cities wil have no major issue actually hosting matches and dealing with crowds im not so sure about the smaller ones...until they start building the new stadia ill feel better...
Durbsboi June 11th, 2006, 01:09 AM What a game, Ivory Coast could have beat the Argentines like 4-2, but squanded chances cost them! well we will have to see how Angola matchs up with Portugal tomorrow night, but not bad from Ivory Coast they put up a good fight.
England was pathetic, they are much better than that! (think it was the heat)
What about Trinidad & Tabago! my word those boys can defend, & to think they were the team that beat the goalie only to hit the cross bar! how unlucky!
joburg June 11th, 2006, 01:20 AM Didn't see the England game, but saw Trinidad & Tabago... Was soooo proud of them! :) They put up such a good fight against Sweden. I must say though that I had trouble deciding whether to support the underdogs or those hot Swedish blonde boys in their little yellow outfits. hehe. But In the end, I settled on the underdogs. :)
Mo Rush June 11th, 2006, 01:56 AM have some awesome 2010 opening ceremony ideas and music too...eish

Durbsboi June 12th, 2006, 11:21 AM Hmm let me guess, mandoza, add some freshly ground, throw in some johnny clegg & top it of Mamma Afrika. oh & the venue of course will be CT (Mo's idea) lotsa lights on the mountain, prob the 2010 logo on the foot of it.
Durbsboi June 12th, 2006, 11:25 AM Angola started of very very shaky last night, almost conceeded the quickest goal in the tournaments history! 20 seconds! Pauletta just running the ball wide byt millimeters! After Portugal took the lead, everyone thought it was all over for Angola, because at that stage, it looked like the end result could look like a rugby score! yes they were that bad in the opening 20min! but they slowley got back into the game, have not been for their captain's (Akwa) fancy tricks in the box they could have equalised, he just wanted to score a spectacular goal cross after cross he was doign that stupid over head kick which most of the time missed by miles! but credit to them to keeping the score to 1-0, it could have been much worse!
Mo Rush June 12th, 2006, 03:03 PM Hmm let me guess, mandoza, add some freshly ground, throw in some johnny clegg & top it of Mamma Afrika. oh & the venue of course will be CT (Mo's idea) lotsa lights on the mountain, prob the 2010 logo on the foot of it.
nah was thinking more along artistic lines...freshly ground is pretty good though...not so sure about mandoza...
Durbsboi June 12th, 2006, 04:24 PM artistic? C'mon u had Danny K for the Cricket world cup, why not give ol Mandoza a turn, germany had those so call "hip hop" group there, which nobody could hear the words or hear the music itself, not like mandoza is any different :D
Mo Rush June 12th, 2006, 05:00 PM artistic? C'mon u had Danny K for the Cricket world cup, why not give ol Mandoza a turn, germany had those so call "hip hop" group there, which nobody could hear the words or hear the music itself, not like mandoza is any different :D
nooo not danny k again..unfortunately the cricket world cup was a low budget affair, with a pretty decent company running it however the problem was the budget...durbsboi come on we can do better than what germany did right? that hip hop group was awful...spose a high standard in opening ceremonies hasnt been set by germany..however a night time ceremony (barring the weather) with cape towns backdrop is irresistible?..right?.not taking anything away from durbans ability to host the opening ceremony...
Harkeb June 13th, 2006, 05:43 AM How poorly the japanese played yesterday! Eventhough I supported them against Australia, the score is actually flattering them. They could have easily lost by prob 8-1, if it wasnt for their awesome referee- who was put under immense and unneccesary pressure from his side. The japs were simply all over the place with poor ball passing.

I do not doubt that they have good individual players, but as a unit they are hopeless. stars dont maketh the team!
i also find soccer so boring!!
Mo Rush June 16th, 2006, 04:27 PM Fans bunk down at World Cup camp
By Laura Smith-Spark
BBC News, Dortmund
The breakfast hall, which can sit 1,500 people at a time
Fans from more than 40 nations are expected to stay during the games
With bunk beds, single-sex dorms and little in the way of privacy, this is hardly five-star hotel territory.
But over the course of the World Cup finals, the Fan Camp in Dortmund is offering budget travellers a handy and relatively cheap place to lay their head.
The Westfalenhallen complex - more usually known as a trade fair centre - has been transformed with the addition of bunk beds to sleep 3,952 people.
Builders and plumbers moved in two weeks before the tournament kicked off to install temporary partition walls, 2,500 lockers, an internet cafe and 120 showers.
Big screens have been put up in two halls so fans can watch the games - including those played just 300m away in Dortmund's Westfalenstadion - before whiling the night away at the on-site disco.
The camp even has its own "beach bar" outside - complete with sand and potted palms - and the 30 euro-a-night (£20, $38) charge for short stays includes free public transport within the region.
Clean toilets
For Ewitts Rollocks, a 55-year-old from Trinidad and Tobago now running a business in New York, the Fan Camp offered a haven when his hotel booking fell through.
I find it very pleasant. Everything works - and there are always paper towels in the washrooms
Ewitts Rollocks
Trinidad and Tobago fan
He has already been at the camp for a week - and may return for a few more days after a trip to Rome.
"I find it very pleasant," he said.
"The staff are very good, the toilets are clean and everything works. And there are always paper towels in the washrooms."
As for Trinidad and Tobago's chances in the World Cup, Mr Rollocks adds: "We are just happy to be here.
"We did not expect to do well, so it was a nice surprise to draw against Sweden."
No friction
Daniel Dreier, a public relations officer for Westfalenhallen, said people from more than 40 nations were expected to stay during the month-long tournament.
The beach bar at the Fan Camp in Dortmund
Alcohol is served on site but there is no friction between rival fans
"Last weekend we had 2,500 people - most from Sweden and a lot from England," he said.
"The Swedish fans loved the beach bar.
"We've also had people from Switzerland, Ireland, Scotland, Panama, Mexico and the US. This weekend we're hoping for another 2,000 for the Switzerland-Togo game."
Although alcohol is served on site there has been no friction between rival fans, Mr Dreier said, with everyone apparently enjoying the chance to meet people from all over the world.
The youngest guest so far has been three-years-old, and the oldest 66.
Many people are staying for up to two weeks and five visitors are booked in for the entire tournament.
Mixed review
However, not everyone has found the Fan Camp experience everything they hoped.
The atmosphere is very good - but you couldn't say it is comfortable
Mariusz Spalek
Polish fan
Polish football fan Peter Zickinski - mulling over Poland's 1-0 defeat by Germany - said: "We didn't know what to expect. We were a little bit surprised by the beds.
"But it's alright - it's another experience. The good thing is it's close to the stadium and the people are friendly."
Fellow Pole Mariusz Spalek, 23, visiting from Katowice with his father Henryk, also gave the camp a mixed review.
"It's nice, you can watch the game, there's beer and the people are fun," he said.
"There are people from lots of countries - lots of Germans and Mexicans, Brazilians.
"The atmosphere is very good - but you couldn't say it is comfortable."
But for anyone not tempted by the bunk beds, the venue has one more draw: it is hosting the 2006 RoboWorld Cup from 29 June to 3 July.
With an international cast of footballing robots battling it out on the pitch, who needs the world's human soccer stars?http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41772000/jpg/_41772880_breakfast_203.jpg

The best musician from South African and the African continent will share centre stage at the final match of the 2006 fifa world cup games in Germany.
South African group, Freshlyground, and other local stars will perform to a global audience of over a billion at the 9 July closing ceremony of the Fifa World Cup in Berlin, where Germany will hand over the hosting laurels to South Africa for the 2010 tournament.
The band will share the stage after the final match with South African musicians Johnny Clegg and Sibongile Khumalo, as well as dosens international stars such as Shakira, Eros Ramazzotti and Youssou N'dour.
"It's a huge honour for us to go and represent South Africa," the group told Die Burger newspaper.
The high-profile performance comes at a great time for Freshlyground, who will be releasing their new album, Nomvula, in Britain, France, Germany and Italy in August. The album has already reached platinum in South Africa.
The group is currently on a concert tour of Germany, after which they will perform in the UK and Ireland in July, followed by another trip to Germany and Belgium in August. In October they return home to tour South Africa.

Armed German police surrounded a car within seconds after it crashed into spectators and came to rest just metres from a stage on which South African musicians were about to perform.
The immediate fear was that it was a terrorist attack.
Amid scenes of panic at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin on Sunday, police arrested a 33-year-old driver - said by witnesses to be either of Indian or Indonesian descent - and his 55-year-old passenger.
No explosive material was found in the car.
'There was quite a tussle with the driver'
A child was seriously injured when the vehicle ploughed into the crowd. Another 20 people were also hurt, 11 of whom were taken to hospital.
Within minutes, ambulances were attending to the injured at a nearby Red Cross medical tent, while police cordoned off the area as they ushered spectators away.
It is still unclear how the driver got through two security checks and drove 300m before crashing in front of the stage.
Police believe the driver intentionally broke through the barrier in an effort to seek attention.
Authorities hadn't determined a motive for the incident, but police said it appeared to be a stunt by a "crazed man".
'There was a loud bang and people were screaming'
"But it was not an attack," they said.
Johnny Clegg, performing on the bill organised by Germany's Ministry of International Development in conjunction with South Africa's Department of Arts and Culture, was on stage when the incident took place:
"I was checking sound equipment when I saw the car careering through the barrier," he said.
"I saw a woman being hit by a bicycle that ricocheted off the car. It looked to me as if the man deliberately drove into the crowd.
"There was quite a tussle with the driver. The police were kicking him before they managed to handcuff him and carry him away.
"At the moment we (South African artists) have been corralled into a hotel. Our equipment, wallets and valuables are still at the venue because they wanted to evacuate immediately," Clegg said.
Along with Freshlyground and the Kholwa Brothers, Simphiwe Dana was also due to perform at the gig. A member of her jazz group was on stage at the time.
"There was a loud bang and people were screaming and shouting. It looked like an Indian guy that was arrested," a shaken Bafana Sukwene said.

SAA boss robbed in Germany
10/07/2006 20:59 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The Potsdam hotel room of South African Airways' (SAA) chief executive Khaya Ngqula was cleaned out by robbers during the Soccer World Cup final between Italy and France, it was confirmed on Monday.
"I don't know what the obsession is with (Ngqula), there were other people whose rooms were broken into," SAA spokesperson Jacqui O'Sullivan said on Monday.
However, she could not reveal the identities of the other South African business executives who fell prey to the burglars, who struck while they were at the match in Berlin on Sunday night.
Italy took the cup after winning a penalty shoot-out with France, following goalless extra-time with both teams level-pegging at one goal each.
Confirming that Ngqula's room had been burgled, O'Sullivan said the matter had been reported to the local police in Germany.
She did not know what was taken. She had had only a brief conversation with him since the robbery and the line had been poor.
Asked whether his passport was taken, O'Sullivan said the matter of his passport had been resolved.
"He's coming back. Somehow he's coming back," she said.
It is understood that Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa was also targeted, as were Zuzi Buthelezi, the son of Inkatha Freedom Party president Mangosuthu Buthelezi, and businessman Dr Dudu Kunene, but this could not be confirmed.
