View Full Version : embedded video
dreaad June 9th, 2006, 04:30 PM is it possible to show embedded video (such as google video or youtube) directly in the forum page?
i've tried with the code written on the video site and then i've pasted it directly in window message but it doesn't function.
AtD June 9th, 2006, 05:30 PM No, for many reasons, including but not limited to;
- For security, the forum doesn't allow code in posts other than vB code, eg HTML code is stripped and made inexecutable
- You'd be stealing bandwidth from where ever you're linking from, which is most probably a violation of their TOS
- Many people view this place from work or school, so they wouldn't want sound blasting out the speakers when they load a thread.
- Chances are, it'd be a violation of copyright law.
dreaad June 9th, 2006, 06:37 PM why is a violation of copyright?
the video site (eg youtube) permits you "plug in" the video directly into another website,with an HTML code given from it.

AtD June 9th, 2006, 07:34 PM Chances are, YouTube and Google are also violating copyright law. :D eg, here (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/14043494.htm). (Google are being sued left, right and centre over copyright, and have already lost a few)
The other two points still stand, and I don't think it to change any time soon.
Jan June 12th, 2006, 03:29 PM Embedding stuff requires html and javascript to be on, which is the same as pointing a big arrow to your site reading 'hack me, please'. Plus at times it really doesn't improve page loading speed. That and AtD's arguments. The easy option is to point to the location where it is hosted.
Caiman June 24th, 2006, 07:54 PM Actually, this can be achieved on vBulletin 3.0.x without the need to turn on html or do anything silly that puts your server at risk, via the ability to create custom BB codes. Check out this thread on vBulletin.org;

Since it only works on youtube, and youtube freely provide the link to allow users to display the video on other sites, there are no 'theft' issues. Also, I believe the video doesnt begin to load until after your page has loaded, i.e. it shouldnt slow your page load time at all. And in turn, these videos require a click on the play button before they start, so are 'optional' in terms of viewing.
Æsahættr June 24th, 2006, 08:40 PM Yes, autoplay is disabled on YouTube embed video BB codes.
dreaad June 24th, 2006, 09:16 PM but the BB code for youtube is disabled in this forum , isn't it?
Æsahættr June 25th, 2006, 06:22 AM How do you get the HTML code for embed videos on YouTube?! I can't find the codes!!!
AtD June 25th, 2006, 07:27 AM Read the thread - you can't.
Æsahættr June 25th, 2006, 07:33 AM I don't mean on the forum... I mean on regular HTML-enabled webpages
Mr. Fusion July 1st, 2006, 06:11 AM I believe someone's already figured this out:

Aokromes July 1st, 2006, 10:16 AM but the BB code for youtube is disabled in this forum , isn't it?
It's not disabled, simply there is no such non standard bbcode.
invincible July 5th, 2006, 06:27 AM It's not really that hard to click on a link to watch a video is it?
When I need to host a video, I just put up a link to the avi file. No embedded players, no Flash interfaces. Click on the link, and let users watch it (or download it for later viewing) using a player of their choice.
It's actually incredibly annoying with my dual monitor setup - when an embedded player loads, it uses the other monitor in overlay mode and therefore stops me from doing things on the other monitor.
The benefits of embedded players are, at best, negligible on a forum like SSC. It's just more encouragement to the people who also think they must post large numbers of images. I could go into a lecture about web usability, but in short, you're meant to post a couple of images and a link to the rest. The interested people follow the link, people who just want to read the discussion below don't get pissed off. Certain threads here are incredibly cluttered.
Onur December 14th, 2006, 10:53 PM Well, we have embed video code

But I didn't like the example video. If it was a video of one of the SSC users, it could be good.
