View Full Version : Google Earth's new updated Pakistan imagery
swerveut June 10th, 2006, 03:30 AM Google Earth seems to have had a massive database increase and it now covers most of Pakistan's major cities in high resolution, alongwith almost the entire coastline of Pakistan.
I have made this thread for people to put down any interesting observations they make while flying over Pakistan and its cities. If you come across something of good note, or even something fun, please put it down in this thread.
swerveut June 10th, 2006, 03:35 AM Some of my observations:
- you can follow almost all of the Makran Coastal Highway from Karachi to Gwadar
- Same with the motorway. But not all of it is available in high resolution. You can follow M-2 from Lahore till a long way in high res, then it becomes blurry. But then you can pick it up again near Isb, and then follow some of the underconstruction portion of the M-1 from Isb to Peshawar.
- Also, Faisalabad comes as a shock in concerns of town planning. The city appears with the old name of Lyalpur in Google Earth, and as can be seen, is remarkably well planned! Its laid out in entirety with streets following the same orthogonal nw-se, and ne-sw directions. I never thought Faisalabad would be so well laid out! Its not completely available in high res, but a large portion of it is and you can also see its famous clocktower square.
UnitedPakistan June 10th, 2006, 03:36 AM Check out Attock where there is said to be a SSG base underground. Also note the city right of Attock. It is extremely well planned...

The city on the right is KAMRA where PAC (Pakistan Aeronautical Complex) and PAF Base Minhas are situated.

Yes, they have got their own base there and it is supposedly underground. My pathan friend has been in there and he says they even bottle their own cola. He is reliable so yeah it aint bs...
swerveut June 10th, 2006, 05:06 AM The ATTOCK Fort:
This mughal era heritage fort is currently being used as a prison and is falling a victim to decay. It should be preserved as a tourism and heritage site.

Sikandar June 10th, 2006, 07:17 AM Yes! As an urban planning major and a keen follower of Pakistani development this is a moment I've been waiting a long time for. Anyway, the first thing I did was go to Gwadar since I don't think anyone has a clue what's going on there. I'm not sure when these pictures were taken but as expected, there's no visible development in what is to be the residential zone.. not a surprise at this time. One very interesting thing I see is they seem to have started construction on the main road that is supposed to shoot down the middle of the future city. It starts from the airstrip and stops just before the "town" placed on the isthmus. I don't know about calling it a town anymore because it's a LOT denser than I expected it to be. It will definitely be interesting how the planning authorities build around this built land form.
Here's a picture of the port area.. looks like the traditional port is on the left and the port under construction on the right, with what seem to be five cranes.
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/7012/gwadar5vb.jpg
Sikandar June 10th, 2006, 07:26 AM Here's the road I was talking about.. you can barely see the airport at the very top, just to the right of the road.. and the road is the faint straight line coming down the middle.. there's a second road coming out of the airport that comes down the right hand side of the picture and into the town, and this road is connected with the Makran highway which disappears into the top-right of the picture.
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/3311/gwadar29gk.jpg
Sikandar June 10th, 2006, 07:29 AM Just as a joke they should bring all the Chinese and Pakistani authorities to this site when it opens and announce it as the port they've spent hundreds of millions of dollars on, ready to serve the needs of Central Asia and China. :D

swerveut June 10th, 2006, 07:36 AM Sikandar, in case you didnt notice, I already posted a few pictures on the development of Gwadar in another thread earlier. Check out the images there:

That's the river Kabul and Indus which meet at Attock. The murky waters are of the Kabul river while the clear waters are from the Indus. I've been to that place couple of times.
UnitedPakistan June 10th, 2006, 04:44 PM The updates on Google Earth are awesome, but yeah do be careful in posting pictures of Nuclear plants and Military air strips!
Dont worry about it!

UnitedPakistan June 10th, 2006, 04:45 PM Actually, thats sediment on the river's floor. Or at least thats my interpretation.
Sikandar June 10th, 2006, 08:08 PM hah.. I don't really know why people are hesitant to post pictures of "sensitive" sites.. who exactly are they being hidden from?
swerveut June 10th, 2006, 08:50 PM Actually, thats sediment on the river's floor. Or at least thats my interpretation.
Nope. Rivers usually carry a big sediment load in their waters. Kabul carries a lot of they dry brown dirt from the deserts of Afghanistan so its waters are murky and dense. Indus at the moment is coming out of green mountains with lesser erosion so has clearer waters. The waters dont mix for a long time because of their immense volumes, low speeds, big density differences, and other such factors.

Can we see some images of Faisalabad too? FSD is on the move too, of course its not as advance as Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi but it is doing everything it can to develop as a future hub. My recent visit concluded this after just six months ago I saw a piece of spare land that was used for nothing. Today there are five malls in construction on that spot. The area i am taking about is near the Kohinoor One Complex.

The pattern is based upon the Union Jack (Great Britain's flag). They designed the city on this pattern when its foundation was laid as Lyalpur.
swerveut June 12th, 2006, 01:56 AM All these old british towns in Pakistan have a very intersting history. I wouldnt say the British lacked anything in the creativity department! If it were me, I wouldnt change the name of Faisalabad from Lyallpur.
Some other old british towns I came across in Pakistan during my journey with google earth are:
- Jacobabad
- Christian Mandi (most probably british, located SW of Bahawalnagar)
- Campbellpore (near Attock)
Not to mention Karachi was a British town as well.
ps. was Abbottabad a british town too? the name seems like it.
UnitedPakistan June 12th, 2006, 02:18 AM Yes, Abbotabad as well...
It was named after a guy called Abbot who was a officier I believe...
Kashmiri84 June 12th, 2006, 03:40 AM I sort of wish the streets in Pakistani cities retained their British names like Andrews Road, Elphinstone St, Victoria st. etc.
swerveut June 12th, 2006, 03:44 AM I think cities that were built by the brits should retain their original names for the streets they made. Newer streets should be named by us. In renaming streets, we lose a LOT of our history and fall into identity crises. Its better to accept our history than to look away from it and remain in a perpetual state of identity crises.

swerveut June 17th, 2006, 12:44 AM Lahore like Karachi, needs a slum management strategy where slums encroaching on key city areas (like near badshahi mosque, minar e Pakistan or the railway station) can be relocated to some other place and the space around those areas cleared out.

merijanpakistan June 17th, 2006, 04:54 AM Salam,
Nice work on sattelite pictures. Lahore is certainly the jewel of Pakistan.
On the border, however, I won't take Google Earth too precisely. Its borders, i felt, weren't exactly very accurate. But the images are high-resolution, and the effort is worth appreciating.
Peace.
swerveut June 17th, 2006, 06:41 AM I think the garden you pictured in Shahdara is the tomb of Jehangir.
Also, if you can post pictures of the Jinnah Lib (is that the right name?) Lahore Museum, Tollington, and Race Course, that would be cool.
For the size of the golf course, Google Earth has a feature where you can measure distances. I measured the area of the course to be 0.17 sq. mi. The other golf course in Lahore measures .16 sq. mi.
If you want to turn on this feature, go to tools>measure. Also, there are two golf courses in khi that you could compare it with. GL

swerveut June 22nd, 2006, 01:26 AM Waqar, thanks for the pics of Lollywood, but as far as your claim of "the biggest movie studio of Asia" goes, I think thats not correct. How can an industry that is almost on the brink of bankruptcy claim to have the biggest movie studios in the continent??
I would think that any Bollywood studio would easily be far bigger than this. Or even some movie studios in China if they have a movie industry there.

pakistans film industry was going great guns in the 60s, 70s, we where way way ahead of both india and china, maybe these film studios are from those days, thats IF they are the biggest studios in asia.

swerveut June 22nd, 2006, 08:22 PM Khuree, if you look back in the threads, I already made a thread for satellite photos of Islamabad a while ago when they were updated first on Google earth. It contains many of the same photos.
MODS: please compare both threads and delete the one that has lesser information to avoid duplicity.
Actually I beleive my previous one has lesser photos so you can delete it.
Khuree June 22nd, 2006, 08:41 PM swerveut sorry for the duplication if this thread already existed but i never saw the Isloo satellite images thread in Landscapes and Cityscapes forum
Can you provide me with the link?

waqar June 23rd, 2006, 02:27 AM Shahnoor Studios
Shahnoor Studios (also spelt as Shahnur Studios) is the studio founded by Syed Shaukat Hussain Rizvi and his first wife the famous singer/actress Noor Jehan. The studio is one of the oldest studios in Lahore and is currently run by Rizvi's three sons Shahenshah Rizvi, Ali Mujtaba Rizvi, and Asghar Hussain Rizvi.
During the 1940s in Bombay, Syed Hussain Rizvi was a famous director/producer of Hindi films and his wife Noor Jehan, the most famous singer/actress in Bombay. The company he initially owned was Shaukat Art Productions. In 1948, after the holocaust of the partition, Noor Jehan and Syed Hussain Rizvi moved to Lahore, Pakistan. On the vandalised remains of the formerly Shorey Studios, they rebuilt a new studio called Shahnoor Studios from scratch and it was finally completed and opened in 1950. The first film to be made there was Noor Jehan's first film in Pakistan, the Punjabi venture Chanwey (1951). Noor Jehan and Syed Hussain Rizvi directed the film together, since Rizvi did not speak Punjabi. The film went on to become a big hit and brought Noor Jehan fame and fortune once again in Pakistan. The studio's early years brought great success as all of Rizvi's films were shot in this studio. However, with the divorce of Syed Hussain Rizvi and Noor Jehan in the mid-1950s, Noor Jehan had to write of her share of Shahnoor Studios to S.H. Rizvi to get the custody of her daughter, Zile Huma and she would not shoot films in this studio again. Syed Shaukat's career after the divorce wasn't as great, because in marrying Noor Jehan, he was a big success because of her. He was only able to make three films after his divorce. He married again to the actress Yasmin, she soon became Yasmin Shaukat and their marriage produced two more sons. To this day, Shahnoor Studios remains after over 55 years.

Metropole July 5th, 2006, 01:56 AM Here is the web browser based version of Google Earth:
WikiMapia (http://wikimapia.org/)
Metropole July 8th, 2006, 04:33 AM I found the following post on Metroblogging Karachi. It's about a feature in Wikimapia that allows you to mark places and information on the Google map. This would help people not familiar with the city to navigate around.
Lets make a collaborative effort to describe Karachi
posted by Mansoor at 10:27 PM on July 07, 2006
Xia pointed out this very good site, Wikimapia "a project to describe the whole planet Earth". It was suggested that we look up karachi, and try to identify as many places as possible there, so as to make it a useful reference. I really liked Xia's idea, and checked out the webiste myself. It uses the Google Maps api to pull up its maps and has various places in karachi marked with rectangles, contributed by users.
Xia suggested we make a collaborative effort, and mark as many places as possible on it. He's included a shortcut link zooming into karachi to get you started as well. I would go further, and request you all to please post each of the places you've marked here on KMB as well. One point to note though, please include only interesting places, and not areas of personal liking such as "my house".
Directions:
Once you've found the area you want to mark, move your mouse over 'Wikimapia' on the top right of your screen and click on "Add a place". That will generate a resizable rectangle on the screen. Move it around till its excatly over where you want, and click on "Save" which appears just over the rectangle. That will bring up a screen allowing you to enter the name and a description of the place bounded by the rectangle. Click "Ok" and your place will be saved into the system.
Come on people! its time to describe our beloved Karachi!

2. KPT Underpass
3. Karachi Gymkhana
4. FTC Building
5. Boat Basin Food Street

Sikandar November 30th, 2007, 06:37 PM I don't think anyone's mentioned it but the satellite image for Lahore has been recently updated in Google Earth. It's pretty interesting to compare some of the new pictures with the old. I just compared a couple, and it's nice to see that the condition of the Lahore Fort has improved significantly, and Lahore looks a bit more greener now. :D The new images are taken at a slight angle as well (or maybe its just a longer shadow of the sun), giving the buildings some depth and life.
If anyone wants to volunteer some time and compare some pictures of old/new then please do so. I'd do it but have exams coming up.
