There is a new non-profit group called City Design Initiative (http://www.citydesigninitiative.com) that is advocating for better design standards in HRM. The website it pretty new, for now it has some general information, and updates regarding urban design.
It's a great time for design in this city. Other than a few bad developments in the downtown core and some very counterproductive NIMBYism, I think that downtown Halifax is rapidly transforming for the better.
The city's urban design project has already begun, and the land studies on Spring Garden/Queen and Grand Parade have generated a lot of public interest and interesting ideas. There is a public meeting on Wednesday, June 14 presenting the findings from the Grand Parade/Province House Public Lands Study. I went to the first community workshop and it was really interesting. There is a very comprehensive document on the study on the Capital District website (http://www.halifax.ca/capitaldistrict/documents/GP-PHPositionPaper.pdf) .
