Krazy June 13th, 2006, 03:08 PM Business Bay's Dancing Towers unveiled in New York
The design of Business Bay, Dancing Towers, was revealed at New York's prestigious Guggenheim Museum this week, as part of a retrospective exhibition on UK-based architect, Zaha Hadid.
http://www.ameinfo.com/images/news/3/26603-dancing.jpg
Dancing Towers.
The Iraqi-born architect was recently declared the winner of an international competition to design three iconic towers at Business Bay, the region's business capital.
Hashim Al Dabal, CEO of Dubai Properties said: 'Zaha Hadid's design for the Dancing Towers confirms Business Bay's role as a project that reflects Dubai's rapidly changing future.'
'The towers incorporate avant-garde definitions of functionality and form that will not only create a distinctive landmark at Business Bay, but also symbolise a new phase in Dubai's architectural standards.'
The bold design concept of Dancing Towers features a 'choreographed' fluidity that combines the three towers in one overall gesture.
Connecting the commercial, residential and hospitality sections of Business Bay, the three towers will share a common base, or podium, that will feature retail, restaurants and related amenities.
The three towers will be conjoined two by two, with the offices and hotel at the base and the hotel and residences at the top.
On Level 7, the floor spaces of the hotel and the office towers will merge to create a link to the hotel business centre with meeting rooms, office facilities and services for guests.
The residential tower merges into the hotel on level 38, for residents to share collective leisure facilities, including the indoor swimming pool and other amenities.
On level 65 of the hotel, the three towers meet again to share a panoramic restaurant offering spectacular views of Dubai Creek, Business Bay, Burj Dubai Downtown, and the Arabian Gulf beyond.
'The advantage of conjoining the three towers in one design is to allow people to live a full day cycle between the offices, residences and the hotel,' said Al Dabal.
Business Bay is Dubai Properties' 80 million square feet master development, located along the extension of the Dubai Creek. It aims to provide world-class environment and infrastructure for global businesses, as well as a self-sustaining lifestyle for residents.
Zaha Hadid was the first woman to receive the distinguished Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004. Once considered impractical, her architectural concepts are now seen in landmark projects across Europe, North America and Asia.

malec June 13th, 2006, 03:11 PM Krazy, those fork towers are Abu Dhabi proposals :)
Indyman June 13th, 2006, 03:44 PM WOW....i like em wherever they are.
Krazy June 13th, 2006, 04:00 PM i will remove the abu dhabi proposal to avoid confusion... sorry abt that malec i had just woken up :sleepy:

Here we go again another crazy tower posed by Krazy LOL. :)
Chad June 13th, 2006, 04:02 PM Somehow it really gives me a "Madonna" impression.
european June 13th, 2006, 04:07 PM ^^them thai ones.
SNT1 June 13th, 2006, 04:47 PM it looks awkward . . .
spyguy June 13th, 2006, 04:50 PM Quite cool
dubaiflo June 13th, 2006, 05:30 PM it is awesome but i doubt the renders is totally correct.
ZZ-II June 13th, 2006, 06:13 PM they look funny, hope they'll built them.
MPrulez June 13th, 2006, 08:21 PM I'd rather rent an office in that most straight one:)
godblessbotox June 13th, 2006, 10:37 PM interesting concept, i like the materials. but isn't there any concern over seismic stability?
i understand there was an earthquake in 97 off the coast of iran.
Krazy June 13th, 2006, 11:03 PM ^^ That's why the two towers are joined at level 65 so they support each other, yet giving the impression of two separate towers
TroyBoy June 13th, 2006, 11:17 PM The name fits well, do they name them in English, like do the people over then call the ttowers by their english names?
malec June 14th, 2006, 12:49 AM it looks awkward . . .
It might look a bit in that render but I'm sure the real thing will be more than great. I'm sure Zaha has thought about the details, etc.
phillyskyline June 14th, 2006, 12:54 AM I like it, it's clever!
onetwothree June 14th, 2006, 01:00 AM I wonder how the elevators will work
Emirati_Girl June 14th, 2006, 01:02 AM hehehe .. funny :hilarious and interesting ^__________^ .. ;)
malec June 14th, 2006, 01:08 AM I wonder how the elevators will work
Well, I was thinking that the render is probably wrong and that it doesn't bend that much, in that case it could work something like this:
http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/6175/dancing6eo.jpg
The towers are joined together though, so it might be possible that elevators in the bendy tower go up to a certain level, and then you have to move to the elevators from the other tower to get to the top.
malec June 14th, 2006, 03:05 AM Better render:

Cliff June 15th, 2006, 04:08 PM the buildings are going so well with the music I'm listening to right now:D
city of the future June 15th, 2006, 05:21 PM This would look good in new york as well
Erebus555 June 15th, 2006, 06:50 PM http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/3802/dancingtowers7se.jpg
The building at the bottom of the pic is Spiralling Tower which is proposed for a university in Barcelona.
godblessbotox June 15th, 2006, 07:11 PM ^^ That's why the two towers are joined at level 65 so they support each other, yet giving the impression of two separate towers
i didnt even see that! tricky!
are these aproved yet?
redstone June 15th, 2006, 07:28 PM ^^ That's why the two towers are joined at level 65 so they support each other, yet giving the impression of two separate towers
I can't see how...
dubaiflo June 15th, 2006, 09:06 PM are these aproved yet?
yes.
Krazy June 15th, 2006, 09:42 PM I can't see how...

Biakko June 16th, 2006, 04:31 PM How are they gonna do for the elevators ?
oups sorry I didn't see it was discussed before. Anyway, I'm still wondering...

http://www.dubai-hotels-reservation.com/Pics/dusit.jpg
Oh thanks. That's cool idea!
How tall are the towers?
Krazy June 16th, 2006, 05:24 PM According to our guesses.. they range from 65 to 85 floors..
dubaiflo June 16th, 2006, 05:54 PM that looks so amazing..
the elevator will work like malec explained, i am sure.
Krazy June 16th, 2006, 06:07 PM i can see that working out for at least two out of the three towers.. if needed be they will use two separate elevators
Onur June 17th, 2006, 01:56 AM I count 70+ floors and I think this tower is ~280m tall.
But I don't see they're dancing :sly: :D
dubaiflo June 17th, 2006, 02:39 AM moving towers.. now that would be something.
can u remember that (fake?) project/proposal for Dubailand.. the rotating city ;)
Toronto06 June 17th, 2006, 02:57 AM ew
Rapid June 17th, 2006, 03:16 AM it is awesome but i doubt the renders is totally correct.
since when are renderings ever correct :ohno:

Dancer June 17th, 2006, 02:15 PM WOW! I like those. :cheers1:
etienne June 17th, 2006, 02:45 PM wow! the curve is so elegant... is this project somehow related to that Dancing Building in Prague?
AtlanticaC5 June 17th, 2006, 03:35 PM Looks very promising, gotta love the effect when scrolling up and down the pics ;)
matt_sbs June 17th, 2006, 06:15 PM that is one crazy tower. be difficult to build
System_Halted June 17th, 2006, 06:20 PM cool
MetropolitanBoy June 17th, 2006, 06:36 PM It takes getting used to. I'm sure it pushes the envelope in engineering. Finally, Otis can use those prototype elevators that they've been developing for pioneering designs and concepts such as this one. :)
DrasQue June 17th, 2006, 07:07 PM haha they're really dancing
I like 'em
Manu84 June 17th, 2006, 07:17 PM buahhh
Nongkhai_tong June 18th, 2006, 08:19 AM I'm sure this will be a very interesting project slim,sexy,modern towers....
To make they dance we must have a huge speaker around them....
coalfactor June 18th, 2006, 08:42 AM really nice
divooneh23 June 18th, 2006, 09:52 AM looks more like a consept, very nice indeed

Mosaic June 19th, 2006, 09:58 AM Nice design but is it too fantasy?
drmadham June 19th, 2006, 11:03 AM Nice design but is it too fantasy?
IMO anything pushing architectural capability is worth an honorable mention. These towers are no exception
:)

SkyLerm June 20th, 2006, 04:09 PM Lovely design. I wanna see it finished!!
KJBrissy June 22nd, 2006, 01:57 AM i can see that working out for at least two out of the three towers.. if needed be they will use two separate elevators
They could also perhaps have an elevator that is suspended from the back of the elevator, and have it kind of hang. Gravity would always keep it verticle, yet the elevator shaft could follow the angle of the building. This, if any of the buildings bend so far that you can't put in a verticle elevator as Malec explained.

DG June 24th, 2006, 04:10 PM amazing
Stiggen June 24th, 2006, 05:07 PM Looks great but too difficult to build
fahed June 24th, 2006, 05:17 PM Hadid's designs are always phenomenal.
Skyscrapercitizen June 24th, 2006, 05:22 PM Will be one of the best towers in Dubai. World class design from a world class architect.
malec June 24th, 2006, 05:30 PM I wonder how the base will be designed and I hope they do a good job of it to encourage people to walk around these towers. There appears to be an oppertunity for some good public space and since business bay is so dense this'll be needed I think.
Anyway, in these pics you can see that the towers are different sizes and can also see how they connect.
godblessbotox June 24th, 2006, 11:55 PM yay! number one favorite dubai construction / proposal
Indica June 25th, 2006, 06:05 AM Well, I was thinking that the render is probably wrong and that it doesn't bend that much, in that case it could work something like this:
http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/6175/dancing6eo.jpg
The towers are joined together though, so it might be possible that elevators in the bendy tower go up to a certain level, and then you have to move to the elevators from the other tower to get to the top.
I was thinking the same thing myself once I saw that design.. there was no room for a core to be built straight upwards.. the building bends so much, that I dont understand how they could do that; surely there is no way that the render is 100% accurate. It kind of reminds me of the twin leaning towers in Spain....
malec June 30th, 2006, 02:12 AM I know they're not exactly right, I just guessed everything from the renders and one of the towers is even facing the wrong way :D
http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/1812/dancing14ke.jpg
I'm sure these towers will make for some great photos once built. :)

Koi July 1st, 2006, 11:55 AM Does the lifts travel diagonally...it will be the world's first?
c0kelitr0 July 1st, 2006, 12:18 PM ^^ the lifts could be positioned somewhere so they won't have to go up diagonally...
malec July 1st, 2006, 01:26 PM Does the lifts travel diagonally...it will be the world's first?
Nope, read back through the thread and you'll find my suggestion on how it should work with normal elevator shafts
dettol August 4th, 2006, 11:26 AM So, Any updates?
Ydlar August 4th, 2006, 01:52 PM This project looks awesome. Dubai. I can't say anything.....Most of their projects are great. I wish they build something like that in Manila..
chris_scraper August 4th, 2006, 03:36 PM I have no words to explain how fantastic is that project
Gatis August 4th, 2006, 03:41 PM Does the lifts travel diagonally...it will be the world's first?
No way. Already in 1980ies Riga TV tower got elevators with changing vector of movement (and not the first ones in world). Have used it - you don't notice even the diagonal movement - although elevator is very fast.

tybbick August 5th, 2006, 08:53 AM Jeez, what'll the Dubaiians think of next?
Mosaic August 5th, 2006, 11:03 AM That's very much futuristic.
ripcurl August 5th, 2006, 12:01 PM I wonder what moves Dubai will pull off next?
This looks fantastic, its so out-there, futuristic and challenges a whole new world of design and thinking.
Nout August 5th, 2006, 11:47 PM Amazing! Kind of 'living architecture'...
Like one day you get up earl in the morning and you think to yourself: 'Are they still the same? Wasn't it the otherone who was benching to the left yesterday?' Really borderbreaking architecture!
dettol August 6th, 2006, 08:02 AM ^^ Thats such a god point Nout!
Gatis, you also make a really good point. I wasnt aware that there were elevators with changing vector of movement although it doesnt seem very unreasonable after considering the tech difficulties would not be that hard to overcome.
samsonyuen August 6th, 2006, 11:11 AM That's cool looking buildings!
khoojyh August 6th, 2006, 04:43 PM the building design is special but funny.
mannix_10 August 6th, 2006, 06:56 PM i like the design of this one....it will be near BD true?
zee August 6th, 2006, 07:28 PM ^^yeh its wil be near the BD..this is going to be in the business bay and the BD is in the burj complex which is right next to it

I'll try to inform about the Tower 1 which is Office tower as I'm doing it while the other two is by my colleague..
ZZ-II April 12th, 2007, 07:21 PM wow, 2 of them over 300m
glitz_boy April 12th, 2007, 08:07 PM yup .... and if u see the 3d done by the architect ..... awesome. i always confused when i see which tower is that =.=" coz all of them seems to be twisted to dunno which direction T_T
joobn April 20th, 2007, 10:06 PM ive heard from an architect that the lifts work by connecting through the buildings. i.e. to get to the top of the middle building you will have to take the elevator from a smaller building, then the smaller building is actually attached to the taller one, so you have to go across to the taller one and take the lift up from there from the current floor to the higher one. very confusing!
Chi649 April 20th, 2007, 10:13 PM Wow, these towers look great!

Bender June 8th, 2007, 08:47 PM Generally, how long between soil test and start of excavation?
Edwin_kok86 June 8th, 2007, 10:09 PM that is hard to tell. There is no standard time between the siol testing and start of excavation. Could bij weeks but also months.

glitz_boy June 17th, 2007, 10:21 AM well RSG ... lets just wait and see then ..
AltinD June 17th, 2007, 01:22 PM Any news on the reported request from the investor for increase in floor count of the two shorter towers?
glitz_boy June 18th, 2007, 05:09 PM Any news on the reported request from the investor for increase in floor count of the two shorter towers?
yup ... it has been accomodated as much as possible by reducing the floor to floor height. actually what the investor want was more number of rooms ... and i would say Zaha&Meinhardt has been trying so hard to achive it. today Zaha's architect was here in SG for the Dubai Financial Market meeting ...
@AltinD .. wah you're so informative .. cool! btw, do you have any idea of how the Dubai Municipality would do the floor numbering? where should we start no.1 etc ? :) thx b4hand
AltinD June 18th, 2007, 05:25 PM ^^ LOL, me informative? I am just repeating what someone mentioned in here, and it seams forgot about it at all (not the first time it happened though). :D
I have no idea about the numbering, since I don't know the structure, but here it starts with G and then there's M (Mezzanine) and so one, however I would presume that the first floor where offices, apartments, hotel rooms starts, should be labeled "1"
glitz_boy June 18th, 2007, 07:17 PM oops! was it me? :P sorry tho if i forgot anythin :)
u mean the entrance shld be labeled as 1? the office, hotel, and residential will have their drop off/entrance at +3.5 Above Dubai MSL ... shall consider this as 1st floor or Ground Floor?
AltinD June 18th, 2007, 08:01 PM ^^ I didn't understood the second part, but my point is that 1st Floor should be labelled the floor from where the regular office, residential or hotel room spaces start. Every other floor beneath that should be labelled differently, starting from G (obviously) for the tower's entrance and then M or even M1 and M2 as I've seen elsewhere.
(M = Mezzanine Floor)
BTW, I don't like the idea of lowering the ceiling height to accomodate more floors, they should just add floors on top, or at least a combination of the two so everyone will be happy, including us the height (increase) obsessed ones. :D
glitz_boy June 18th, 2007, 08:30 PM oo ... i c .. i got what you mean now ... Thanks!
as for the hotel ... they dint change the ceiling height .. ceiling height will still remain as it is .. as we have the ceiling .. hehehe ... just that the engineer must turn their head upside down ..
office and hotel will be connected thru Ground Level (Drop Off level) ..

how on earth is they going to stay up ? the wait of the tower on the upper floors are of center in the bulding ! how are they not topel ower
Dubai Spacescraper July 19th, 2007, 10:11 AM ^the middle tower is leaning on the other at the base, and the one at the top. The tower on the left doesnt tilt very far over so it doesnt need to be supported. It gives the allusion that it shouldent be standing. From most angles it look really amazing!
Muse July 20th, 2007, 03:55 AM There will be enough strong load bearers in the bottom 1/2 of the buidings to support the upper-most levels. It would all be mathematically worked out by the structural engineers to provide more strength than what would be required, just as an assurance like with many standard buildings anyway.
A bit hard to tell from some the renders but it appears load bearers on one side of the very lower-part of the tower, shoot str8 up to the other side of the upper-most side. Unless there is some severe malpractice, the towers will not topple. A diagram of the supersturcture of the towers would explain it all.
Now for some dancin'!

Muse July 20th, 2007, 04:08 AM ^^ Yeah perfect. That and page 2 of this thread :okay:
Dr_Strangelove July 20th, 2007, 05:03 AM No way. Already in 1980ies Riga TV tower got elevators with changing vector of movement (and not the first ones in world). Have used it - you don't notice even the diagonal movement - although elevator is very fast.

And before that there was the Gateway Arch in St Louis. The construction of the arch began on February 12, 1963, was finished on October 28, 1965 and was opened to the public on July 24, 1967 (after one of the trams was completed). It cost about $ 13 million to build. The two bases are equilateral triangles with sides 54 ft long. At the top of the arch, the triangle is only 17 feet long on each side. Visitors enter the arch from an underground visitor's center and can travel to the observation deck at the top in a 40-passenger tram that runs inside the arch.

Spectrum July 20th, 2007, 12:30 PM Business Bay Signature Towers, Dubai
Start Date: August 2006 | Completion Date: December 2011
Arup completed the concept design for architect Zaha Hadid’s stunning twisting structures in the business bay district of Dubai. Originally known as the Dancing Towers, none of the three buildings [a 75-storey office development; 65-storey hotel; and 55-storey residential building] - is exactly vertical.
It was certainly an unusual design for Arup project manager Keith Jones and his team to work on. “We've seen a twisted geometry trend emerging in building design lately,” he comments, “but to date, I haven’t seen anything else quite like this.”
Business Bay Signature Towers, Dubai Zaha Hadid Architects
The project team carried out a study of the site – a circle formed by the extended Dubai Canal – to find the optimum alignment for the towers.
Two of the towers translate sideways as they rise before straightening again at the top and joining together. Structurally, the two towers had to be treated as one as they rely on each other to stand up. Although they will be joined at the top, the two buildings require different services designs - one will be used as a hotel and the other as residential apartments.
The design also had to take into account the region’s hot climate. The project team carried out a study of the site – a circle formed by the extended Dubai Creek – to find the optimum alignment for the towers. The resulting designs allow the towers to shade each other, helping to keep the towers' occupants comfortable under the hot Dubai sun. We also Elsewhere within Business Bay, we worked on the concept design for the centre living bridge and the new financial market [situated on the site adjacent to the towers]. Our Milan office carried out the structural design for the culture centre and our Sheffield office was responsible for the structural and mechanical engineering of the financial market building. Keith Jones' team based in London coordinated the dozens of specialists working on the various projects across the site.
Modern communications technology coupled with Arup's world class knowledge management tools, ensured teams spread across different countries and continents could work together easily and effectively. “Other than the initial kick-off meeting, we didn't need regular meetings where we all sat together around a table,” explains Jones. “Using technology to facilitate collaboration on the project saved us time, energy and the carbon output of having to travel and meet face to face.
Coordinating the towers project was helped by Arup’s existing relationship with architect Zaha Hadid and her company. "When Zaha Hadid won the competition to build the towers, Arup was already on board" Jones explains.
Arup is currently working with Hadid on a similar design for a competition in Dublin: a residential tower with a core surrounded by eight rectangles which translate outwards, giving a splintering effect. We are also working on the design of the new Aquatics Centre for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In my Opinion, The Hotel Tower (tower 3, shortest one), should be taller than the Residential Tower (tower 2), to create that perfect balance and unity between the three towers.
Or maybe at least rearranging the towers (maybe rotating towers 2 and 3 by 180 degrees) so that it doesn't look like the towers are standing in order of height.
What do you guys have to say? Nonetheless, this development is by far one of Dubai's best and i'm really looking forward for these towers to rise.
glitz_boy December 23rd, 2007, 09:57 AM the shortest one is residential tower, the one in the centre is hotel tower.

i wonder the same!!!
Rafael27 December 25th, 2007, 10:32 AM the design is very stranger but i like it.
AltinD December 25th, 2007, 10:54 AM About the elevators: They will go straight up to the top for the side towers. The central Hotel tower will have an elevator shaft going 2/3 up to serve the hotel rooms, and the hotel serviced apartments that are on the floors above, will be served by the lifts on the residential tower (keep in mind that they are joined at the top)
All have been explained before
saeed December 26th, 2007, 11:01 AM Its a very complicated design, but it will be a remarkable spot that you cant miss in Dubai!!

Buyckske Ruben May 27th, 2008, 04:15 PM Simply amazing! Its evident because the hole site of the "Burj Dubai" (shopping mall end surroundings) is leading step by step to its end.
