So, what are the foot bridges of the world?

In my town, Waterville, Maine, US, we have a historic suspension footbridge that crosses the Kennebec River. Built in 1903
Here are some pictures I took...

I know there are some more modern ones out there too along with the historic ones, so lets see them! :)

Here is an interesting one in Fredricton, New Brunswick, Canada. It was an old train bridge that crossed the Saint John River, but in 1997 was converted to a walking bridge.

Amgen's Helix bridge in Seattle. It's suppose to represent a DNA strand, hence the odd design.

The first thing people usually say when they see this bridge is, "Wow the city of Seattle must have a lot of money to build bridges like this."

In reality it was paid for by Amgen, a biotech company. I guess somebody in the marketing department at Amgen thought making a bridge shaped like a DNA strand would make for good advertising. :)

The Gandy Bridge in St.Petersburg, Florida is 3 miles long it, the older span to the right was turned into a pedestrian bridge and at the starts of both ends they added fishing areas.

Actually if you walk the whole thing its 6 miles because you need to go back to the other side to the parking lot ive done it many times, its tiring, but good excercise. The people on the bridge are joggers, roller bladers, bikers, fishers, or just families out for a walk.

One of favourites is this little bridge that connects Windsor and Eaton (near London) This bridge was compled in 1824 but there has been a bridge here since 1172. I know it's small, but I always found not only the bridge to be very beautiful, but also with great views from it.

Still on London, I quite like the Transporter Bridge in East London that connects the newly developed areas around the Excel Exhibition/conference center. What also makes it unique, is not only the elevated foot bridge (reached by lifts) but there is also a hanging "transporter" under the bridge that moves people across - similar to the transporter bridges in other parts of Europe, especially the famous Bilbao one.

Although there isn't much in the area at the moment, it is expanding fast with new developments.

As I mentioned the Bilbao Hanging Transporter Bridge in Spain, I feel I should mention it here. Although more famous as a transporter bridge, it has a pedestrian deck high above well worth the mention, especially as it cannot be described as a normal bridge

The Vizcaya Bridge was designed by Alberto de Palacio in 1887. When a new team of business administrators and technicians took over the running of the bridge in 1996, they agreed on two key objectives: to offer a modernised and renovated transport system for the 21st century, and to promote this monument to the same degree as its novel neighbour, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
With this in mind, the Vizcaya Bridge was considered as an industrial monument where its history and difficulties had to be respected, and the intervention work carried out would have to recover the spirit of its original construction. The restoration of the structure, which had been affected by often inappropriate interventions over one hundred years, was undertaken. The transport system was made suitable for new methods and technology by renewing the passenger control systems and installing a new gondola for passengers and vehicles. Finally, the Vizcaya Bridge was adapted for the tourist and leisure market by opening a walkway over the upper span with access from two panoramic lifts.

This work has resulted in an exquisitely refurbished Bridge and a monument from the Industrial era restored for future generations.

Most of the photo's below are probably before renovation.

This was the world's first transporter bridge, connecting the upper middle-class Las Arenas quarter of Getxo with the working class town of Portugalete and its historic city centre. There are two ways to cross the bridge, on the gondola which carries the vehicles and most pedestrians a few feet above the waters of the estuary, or across the overhead walkway, a giddy 50 metres above the ground and the river
The span is 148m long

Just to keep the thread going ...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Daily/snbridge_4744.jpg

Above) This footbridge once carried Australia's first steam railway from Melbourne to its port. It's actually not the original bridge ... I think that was essentially wood. This bridge carried four railway tracks on massive steel girders that no-one would dare try to lift when they closed the line: now it's an outdoor encylopedia and gazateer of Australian immigrants, for Casino high-flyers who can't afford the limousine home.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Daily/pan3779-82.jpg

^ Another converted railway bridge ... it also connected melbourne to its port, but had a much shorter life. Once again, they modified it a bit. it now forms part of the "Capital City Trail", which in 30 km passes about 80 bridges. Here it is again ...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/Daily/pan3784-87.jpg

One of them is the 1899 Morell Bridge at Richmond, not unlike the arch bridge in Justme's posting above, but I don't have a decent photo. It's a converted road-bridge!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Otway/bnw/sbr86_bt.jpg

This bridge was constructed by my father, my family and I,
on my property about 200 km from Melbourne. See? we're building it ...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Otway/bnw/sbr_py2.jpg

It's twenty years old this year. unfortunately one of those very large trees
is threatening to fall down on it ... eventually.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Otway/bnw/ls_br.jpg

Back to Melbourne. another very wide footbridge ... across the tracks at Southern Cross Station to the Telstra Dome Stadium ...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Melbourne/SouthernX/crss4943.jpg

and this one leads over just as many railway tracks to the MCG:

Langkawi Pedestrian Bridge in Malaysia is located 700m High in the mountain accessable via cable car. Provide fantastic view of the forest canopy and can see Thailand.

Like to post pictures but not sure how to do that. Any advice anybody ?

Some critics call it the Bridge to Nowhere because it is seldom used.

This huge footbridge allows pedestrians to cross the extensive rail yards that bisect this little town. The 3 trusses span about 190 feet each. The bridge which was built in 1931 was very recently refurbished with modern lighting and access ramps.

That,s a great foot bridges..but i like The old footbridges of Hill crest and Banker's Mountain give these communities a exclusive and unique character,Of all the footbridges discovered in Banker's Mountain, the Brighten Road link is by far the most exclusive and the best.
