Looks like Cleveland wants a Super Bowl. Here's a link:
Possible roof for Cleveland Browns Stadium (http://www.newsnet5.com/news/9258709/detail.html)
Here's a wireframe picture:

The stadium is large enough. I'm questioning the stadium itself. I don't know if it can hold the roof. Thoughts?
Calvin W June 14th, 2006, 05:17 AM Maybe a good idea? They get some shitty weather near the end of the year. I think Cleveland and Buffalo should both have domes. But I think $90 million is to low. I would guess closer to$200 million. What about the field?
Zorba June 14th, 2006, 05:35 AM The Browns should concentrate on putting a halfway descent team on the field before they worry about a roof.

The field would either be grass or that new turf. I'm betting it's turf. It can't be removed the field like in Arizona.
urbanlover June 14th, 2006, 09:18 AM The website shows the roof being supported by external supports so it certainly looks doable. It could be worth the money to make it a year round facility Ford Field does all concert, monster truck, etc business that the Silverdome did in the off season. Not to mention the possibility of getting a Super Bowl
rantanamo June 14th, 2006, 07:29 PM This would be cool. Definitely one of my favorite stadiums in the world. Not to mention it has full soccer dimensions. So yet another World Cup venue.

The Mad Hatter!! June 14th, 2006, 10:06 PM wtf is that, way to european for my taste, looks like a bird's nest.
Scba June 14th, 2006, 11:14 PM Why not? They've had a retractable team for years.
Jim856796 January 29th, 2008, 06:51 AM Cleveland Browns stadium may have to undergo significant upgrades while they are trying to add that retractable roof. The stadium may be a white elephant because it is guaranteed to only host ten events a year. Also, a domed stadium would have served as a much needed replacement for the Cleveland Public Auditorium and the IX Centre near the airport. seriously, though, I don't see a domed browns stadium happening unless a new convention centre is built nearby. That convention centre could be built under the cleveland Mall or west of the Stadium itself. I may have a hard time over which is the better option for a convention centre site.
GunnerJacket January 29th, 2008, 03:24 PM But seriously, aren't the Browns supposed to be one of those salt of the earth teams in the mold of the Packers, Bears or Steelers? I guess we aren't talking about Lambeau though. Add it to the World Cup bid list.First thing that came to mind when I saw this. Granted, I'm among those who'd love to see a Super Bowl in a cold weather location. Suck for the execs looking for a paid vacation, but would be great for the true fans of the game. Packers, Bears, Steelers, Browns, Bills, Jersey A/B... Those teams need to play fully in the elements. Any real NFL fans will tell you watching games in the snow is a wonderful thing.
And don't do this just for the Super Bowl. Either more and more facilities will share in the hosting, meaning Cleveland might host once every 20+ years, or the rotation will remain predominantly among Miami, Arizona and San Diego for all the bigwigs looking for a week of golfing or beach time.
That being said, I must admit the model design looks attractive and domed stadiums can be highly functional beyond the NFL games. This would be a sad trend, though, if more and more NFL games were played indoors simply to accommodate conventions and big concerts. If the league needs that much more revenue, then maybe it should consider cutting costs first. ;)
Canadian Chocho January 29th, 2008, 03:37 PM Holy Crap!! Is that people I see?!?!?! In Cleveland!

Hey, Cleveland did very well this year, they just barley missed the playoff...and they screwed over my Cowboys...THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO SUCK SO WE COULD GET THERE HIGH DRAFT PICK!!!!
Yet i digress, I think cleveland would be a great location for a Super Bowl, It got allot of good marks during the NBA Finals, I think they could pull it off.
it would be a huge waste of many for the city of cleveland.
Arnt they raising private funds?
TU 'cane January 29th, 2008, 10:32 PM I know it's about attracting mroe fans and making it more suitable for the fans but the meaning of football is slowly going away.. All you'll have soon is HS and college football playing in the elements... Football is weather.. weather is football haha
TU 'cane January 30th, 2008, 12:55 AM Well the NFL has been catering to the wine and cheese crowd for a long time now. The brains and wallet are in the NFL but college and HS have always been, and will always be where the soul is.
Very true. :)
eMKay January 30th, 2008, 07:59 PM Cool idea for Cleveland, butI don't know about roofing The Ralph, it's a pretty wide stadium, 950 feet wide if you roof the lower concourse, 760 feet wide from bathroom tower to bathroom tower. Browns Stadium is 726 feet wide at the top of the upper decks, that's pretty wide too but the shape is a lot easier to roof than the Ralph.
For comparison The O2 dome is 1,143 feet wide, the Superdome is "only" 750 feet wide, and U. of Phoenix stadium is 715ft wide. The Ralph could be roofed using a fabric roof like the O2 (the company that roofed the O2 is from Buffalo, so that works :) ) But then it would not be retractable.
Vilak March 18th, 2008, 05:23 PM Absolutly ugly!
rover3 March 18th, 2008, 07:01 PM ^LOL
Add it to the World Cup bid list.
Well, except Cleveland does not exactly have an international or cosmopolitan atmosphere the way New York, Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Tampa/Orlando, etc., do.
For a 2nd World Cup, it is so....Rust Belt? Besides, World Cup games are preferred to be played in the open air.
Axelferis March 19th, 2008, 11:02 AM I'd rather they spend more money and get rid of the whole cantilever system.

massp88 June 30th, 2008, 10:17 PM While it appears this is going nowhere, I cannot understand why the Browns, or any northern NFL team, cough Minnesota cough, would ever want to have an enclosed stadium. Sure it makes it easier on the fans as they don't have to brave the cold and snow, but from an advantage standpoint, it is HUGE. Having dome and warm weather teams come into a loud and very cold stadium gives the home a large advantage.

heatohio October 18th, 2012, 03:16 AM I'm 150% in favor of a retractable roof being put on the stadium, and preferably this stadium being torn down and one built in a different area downtown. BUT, the company that came up with this hideous thing should be shut down asap for the simple fact that they thought this was a good idea. It's ugly and impractical seeing as how the cold still gets in which defeats the main purpose of putting a roof on in the first place.

Have you ever been to a game here? The location is great, the setting right on the lake is beautiful and the stadium itself is still in the upper half of stadiums in the league and it is 13 years old. Cleveland fans aren't affraid of the cold, they don't need and don't want a dome.

I live in Cleveland, have my entire life. Been to a ton of games at the old stadium and the new one. And it has nothing to do with football games being played in the cold, it has to do with using a huge chunk of lakefront property about 12 times a year between the Browns and a couple other random uses in the summer. A retractable roof could get us a super bowl someday, more conventions, final four, big 10 championships...and so on. It would generate revenue for the city that an open roofed stadium on the lake never could.
And for the record, many fans don't want to sit in 10 below windchill coming off the lake to watch a game. Personally I don't mind it, but my son and fiance don't have to be subjected to it. I sat in the dawg pound for some of the playoff games in the 80's when it was downright freezing. But especially since we've been so awful for so long, it's more difficult to convince people to sit in freezing temps the last couple games of the year when it means nothing. As a whole the city would benefit from a retractable roof.

No obstructed views, at least not anywhere I've sat, and I've sat all over that place. The old stadium we had here was one big obsructed view. As a kid I sat right behind a huge pole during a game against GB in '86. I don't think I saw but half the game at most.

Look at the photo^^ There is a small number of seats in the middle tier endzone that you cannot see because they are obstructed by the upper tier. If the camera can't see the seats, the people in the seats can't see the camera.
Follow the sightlines below, the seats in Section 343 can surely only see at best about half of the 'Browns' endzone:

I love football in the elements and I really hate the idea of a dome being attached. Sure it would attract more events but as someone who loves his football in the elements and has been a Browns fan since I can remember- HELL NO to the dome idea.
I just prefer watching my Browns in the elements rather than some dome. I believe domes take something out of the game and ruins it. Maybe it's cause I am a traditionalist or something- Eh- Please don't put me down for being a Browns fan!
