The CT cities are all close in total population. but out of them all, stamford is gaining FAST, in 10 years stamford will most likely be 135K+. New Haven and Hartford a re seperated by a few people, interesting. Waterbury is FAR behind compared to the rest.

Stamford MIGHT surpass Hartford soon...but Bridgeport will be #1 for a while...

But, it doesn't matter since they all are growing (slowly)

Keep in mind that although Hartford is 125k, the Greater Hartford Metro as a whole is 1.25 million.

I was under the impression that Hartford, New Haven, and bridgeport were losing population.

The Hartford metro also includes New Haven, Springfield Mass, and it may even include Bridgeport. So basically the New Haven metro is also 1.25 million, and so is the Springfield metro area.

Nah, the New Haven metro is like 700K i think RPM. Hartford has all those little towns near it so they have 1.25 million......the bridgeport areas about 500K and Stamford-Norwalk is 200K ( i think it should be greenwhich-stamford-norwalk in stamford metro. Stamford metro would be stamford, norwalk, greenwhich, weston, darien, new canaan, ridgefield)

There are like 70 towns in the metro...

Good to see that Hartford's beginning to regain central city population. It was in really bad shape a decade ago.

How's the Adrian Landing Project & the science & tech museum on the riverfront coming along!

yea you do have alot of town around the area. Down here near stamford, everyone wants to be independant and not form a metro area, matter of fact, darien would have been part of stamford a long time ago, but they opted not to join the ranks. I wish we at least have a metro or have some level of importance in the state. We have the third most fortune 500 businesses in the country ( behind NYC and Chicago) and still get no recognition within our state.

Yeah...gaining 100 people per year! j/k

Well, the Adrian's Landing project has been somewhat of a success so far. It has brought investment levels in the downtown not seen in decades. The Convention center has been used a lot (but not as much as it can) but it has been successful overall. Condos have also been sprouting up. They still have to get rid of all those parking lots downtown, they are ugly!

Hartford is SLOWLY gaining population now, probably because of immigrants, as natives are moving to the suburbs. The city is doing better than in the 90s but needs a long way to go. The north and south ends are still hell at night, and the crime rate is actually going up.

The CT science center will open in 2008! Construction has started...

And a pic how it will look with the skyline at night:

Hartford is the closest thing of importance for the state...it helps us that we are the only city in the state above 100k NOT considered part of the NYC metro...

Stamford has the third most Fortune 500 companies? Did not know that.

^Someone must be looking at the wrong figures. Stamford does not have the third most(Not even in the top 20) Fortune 500 companies in the USA. Someone must be reading something wrong.

Thanks for the updates & posting those great pictures of some of the Hartford developments. They should help Hartford better connect with the river.

Well it’s been a long slow climb back from the early 1990s, when Hartford's insurance sector consolidated.

Yeah I know Hartford has a large African American & Jamaican community on the north side & large Puerto Rican & Latino community on the south side.

What’s the size of the Somali community around Hartford? Metro Boston has pretty sizeable Somali community & Lewiston, Maine has been attracting a lot, but sure the numbers have jumped a lot from what they were in 2000.

Unusual fire, thats where i read in the newspaper about stamford havin the most fortune 500 companies, it was in the newspaper. And its true, we are considered NYC metro, but if we weren't, then it would be the stamford-norwalk- greenwhich metro area

The Hartford Metro has a SMALL Somali community. The community grew because of the Somali Bantu, which are different than us actually, to more than 200. They came from refugee camps in Kenya. But the city is not very popular with them, as they are moving where large communites have arised, like Columbus, OH.

Most of the Ethnic Somalis like myself here are assimmilated because the community is so small. Most of us are successful, and Americanized. They mostly live in the suburbs though, like West Hartford and Bloomfield. I'm actually in the few families who still live in the city.

That wasnt really fire; that was asking for a link or something to prove it. Do you have a link to the newspaper saying that?

you know, thats kinda odd that all those cities are that close in population, add to that Yonkers, Albany, Springfield, Providence and Worchester and it seems the entire area is a 100 - 200k city suburb of Boston and NYC

Hartford looks like the biggest right?

Hartford has the biggest metro population at 1.3m...it has the largest skyline and feels the most urban to me, but it also has the most suburban sprawl.

But counting only the city proper... Bridgeport is by far the largest, and New Haven and Hartford trade for #2...

They all are small, though.

Yea they are all small. 100K-200K cities all between NYC and Boston. In CT who has the second best/largest skyline behind hartford???

It does feel urban in hartford, it really does. 1.3 million is alot for such a small city in a small state. thats more than some other cities that are twice as large as hartford

Hartford definatly is Connecticut's metropolitan capital.

Aside from Hartford's downtown skyline, the large number of mostly brick three-deckers & multi-story apartment buildings helps to give it a lot of urban flavor. Although I've heard that quite a few have been demolished since the 1990s. Bridgeport & New Haven seem to have less multi-story buildings.

All three of CT's largest metros (the cities & increasingly some of the suburbs) are very demographically diverse.

Well only 125k are in the city of Hartford. If Hartford was twice as large, and included some of the suburbs, then its population and size would be closer to some other cities.
