^^ Ouch! I certainly don't miss the bitter cold winters up north. I used to live in Omaha, and I still remember when the windchill factor was so low (-60b) that our car wouldn't start. And if you were lucky enough to get it running, you didn't have to bother turning on the heater... what heater?!?! burrrrrrrrr :tongue4:

Then again they're probably so desperate to rent the units they wouldn't mind giving anyone that walks up to the building a tour. :)

Went to DT Tampa last night to check out the lights, I saw all of them but the channel one, oh well. I have some pics on my gf's camera too since hers is better, I'll post them when I get them. MY gf did point out something obvious but something I never really notice anymore since I've been to downtown Tampa so much which is the massive amount of parking lots and garages. Walking around DT Tampa its easy to see that St.Pete is more urban.

It's on the small dock at Cotanchobee Park just south of the Forum. On that dock there is also an exhibit of scrap steel sculptures for each of the 12 NFL playoff teams this year.

I still cannot believe somebody had the audacity to claim a bunch of disco balls on lights polls are some creative arts project. Furthermore, I cannot believe the city, or whoever, paid for it!

Some of the lights on Tampa projects sound interesting, particularly the bay mood ring. Unfortunately, some of these just seem so. . . uninspired.

The disco balls are really lame, they aren't even all the same size, what does that show about Tampa? Cheapness? Please somebody snap a pic of the mood ring, I really hate driving to tampa, my car always gets some kind of gunk on it when I go there.

Orange gates?

DShenise
January 13th, 2009, 09:44 PM
Christo's Gates project in Central Park from about 5 years ago. It was a temporary installation that was pretty cool. I think NY'ers would like the disco ball as that is what they basically ring in the new year with. You have to remember there aren't any truly new or unique designs, just refinements to what has already been done before. Its how things are organized and the context that matters. Like Christo's Gates worked great in Central Park, they would also have been good on Bayshore, but would have been stupid and out of context in DT.

FlaNatv
January 14th, 2009, 05:19 AM
The orange gates detract from the beauty of the surroundings. Public art should not detract or stick out like a sore thumb. Too frequently, abstract public art, which has an extremely small appreciative audience, is given prominant locations. What to most is an eyesore, is shoved on everyone.

It would be behind them, so any obstruction would be the other way around. Regardless, TWELVE won't be coming any time soon.

Jonkee I hope your wrong, but with the economy the way it is you just don't know.. But if Element is a success and it seems to be at a pace better than Skypoint, also then more Hotel demand in Downtown from the new museum's and riverwalk completition in the next 1-2 years, since Twelve is Condo-Hotel-maybe rentals, you might get this built in the near future as well.

Twelve would really feel in the core very well indeed.. With it's 572 feet".

But besides the Sykes building and the Park Tower there is a huge theme in colors throughout the skyline.. Blue's-Green-s Pastel's or Rose colors. Pale's Yellow's and the Blue Bay dominate the scene..

jonknee
March 16th, 2009, 11:46 PM
^ If it's anything like the other TWELVE buildings, the hotel only takes up a handful of floors (Atlantic Station has 380 condos and 101 hotel rooms). That means they have a ton of units to sell, something they are still trying to get done in Atlanta. Check out this sales PDF (http://www.twelvecentennialpark.com/tcphandout.pdf) for the second TWELVE, prices are down to $150k. That's a discount of about $60k.

So yea, while I'd love it to go up soon and be successful, I don't see any way that's happening.

.

Two words: Credit crunch.

It's not the shallow issue of "the economy" -- it's the lifeblood of development that is in question right now: Financing. Loans. Liquidity that gets things built in the first place. It's why there isn't a huge uptick in start up companies right now to fill the void left by crashing giants: there's no money to loan out in order to do this.

The TWELVE Arts building is a project we all want to see completed. Unlike other projects, it wasn't in a bad location to start and contrasted greatly with the rest of the skyline. But with a glut of residential units around the area that are unsold, a glut of units downtown that have not been moved yet, a slowed tourism economy (the people who, you know, actually rent hotel rooms), it's beyond being optimistic expecting the project to move forward this year.

Maybe I'n wrong on that extreme pessimism about the economy recovering (as the last 2 weeks have shown new life in the financial sector) but right now expecting nothing to be built any time soon is what should be the standard. It doesn't mean you have to like it, but you gotta accept it. Times are tough... And the only developers getting bailouts right now are the sprawl developers who want the state legislature to rid Florida of impact fees and "streamline" regulations so more sprawl can be built with less stopping it.

And TWELVE (along with other downtown projects) is most decidedly not sprawl.

The photos are all tagged with being taken using a 18.0-55.0 mm f/3.5-5.6, which I believe is the standard packaged lens. Though you can get body only if you wanted to get another lens.

Good pics, but one thing I've noticed since I moved to Atlanta is that the new windload certified sign structures are really visually prominent. I know using standard size pipe and bolt fittings was probably the cheapest and easiest way to go, but come on they are terrible looking. Some one should inform FLDOT that there is this little country called China and generally you can get whatever you want made there very cheaply, like say attractive steel structures that are windloaded to 120mph and don't look like above ground sewer pipes. I'm positive they could probably get them cheaper but it would probably be a little more paperwork and leg work to get it done.

I don't mind the pipe signs. Certainly if Tampa had the money to afford electric signs, I would support that, but they don't have the $$$ to do so. And in todays market and pretty every other day, we should always be putting the top priorities first and I don't consider electric signs TOP priority. The poles are the same. Is there something better out there? Yes, but do we NEED them? Not really. And I think this state has learned something from combining the words cheap and China (ex. drywall)

Yea but it's gonna take a lot more than some signs to change that. In addition maintaining the signage would help too, look at my pic of the Ybor sign to see several of the neon lights out.

I can't wait for Ashley to get new skyscrapers when the economy turns around. Can you imagine if all the blocks looked like Ashley/Kennedy? We'd have a really nice urban street. I just hope that when all this happens our councilmen only approve good designs and not some stupid crap. But by then the new form based zoning laws/UBC/LEED (might eventually become a standard) will be in affect so who knows?

Yeah... Downtown Tampa almost looks like something worth checking out... Whenever the next boom cycle is complete, it will probably be more interesting. Maybe 6-8 years from now?

Unfortunately, while most of Florida skylines underwent dramatic transformation recently, Tampa's largely stayed the same. It was so disappointing to see only a small handful of new condos and hotels go up downtown during the most recent boom cycle, even though dozens of towers were proposed. I don't know if people realize it, but downtown Tampa hasn't added a new office tower in 17 years. Everything built since then has been a government building, hotel or condo. Not only is that pathetic, but it is getting to the point where it's a bit alarming.

I think the city has totally forgotten about its CBD and believes they can stick everything over in the Westshore area. Best place for a new office tower is certainly the Trump Tower site.

The Selmon would have to be buried to ever truly connect all parts of downtown with each other. In the mean time, getting rid of Con Agra and ripping up most of those tracks would be a start.

The Trump site is hampered by it being rather narrow N/S, and access to Ashley south of Kennedy is a little cramped. Plus, a riverwalk isn't as big a selling point for office tenants as it would be for residential uses.

I would love to see the city sell its 'HART lot', which is the surface lot just south of the Ft Brooke garage, to a developer who would put up an office tower above several store fronts along Franklin. Along with the streetcar expansion up to Whiting along Frankin, that would really help to tie in the convention center area to the downtown core

I really like how Metwest looks different than anything else around town. Reminds me a lot of what one would expect to see somewhere in AZ or CO, and I like it when we get an infusion of different styles into the local vernacular.

With that said, it's important to note that Le Jardin has no thru-access to Metwest, even though it's literally next door, because the city didn't require that Grady or LeMans be extended to improve access in the neighborhood. In fact, I was at the site plan meeting for Metwest. They didn't even consider it as a possibility... So now if someone wants to go from one place to the other, they have to drive about 1/3mile around from one entrance to another. Or, they can climb the fence (not there yet, but it will be because Le Jardin is supposed to be gated IIRC) onto the back of the Hilton property, and then walk across that old sidewalk bridge. (which may or may not still exist). And this is what our leaders consider good growth management for the region's largest employment and shopping district? I'm so sick of this bulls***!

FloridaFuture
July 3rd, 2009, 10:32 PM
^Yeah I just did that drive today. Le Jardin has a long driveway that lets out on to Louis and there's also some access to it from Spruce. It's a shame that the main road that runs through the Met West retail center (the road in the last two pictures) doesn't run through Lemans Drive, which is what most of Le Jardin is on.

Overall, they're two good looking projects, but neither is connected to anything on foot, and pedestrian friendliness is Westshore's biggest problem. Especially that part of Westshore.

Man, forget pedestrian friendliness. We can't even get our idiot leadership to give us the fundamental basis for transportation - connectedness. For people to get from point A to point B, the two locations must be connected in an efficient manner. We don't even have that around here. The prevailing policy seems to be that the more red lights, cul-de-sacs, dead ends, locked gates and 'traffic calming devices' we have confounding our ability to get to where we want to go, the better! Apparently, our leaders have decided that the best way to reduce traffic congestion is by making the experience of trying to get around town so f***ing miserable, that most of us will just give up and stay home (or move out of town), thereby eliminating the need for any roads at all!

But back to FF's great pics...

I love the pics of HPV too. It's such a nice little street, it's a shame that it doesn't have enough population density adjacent to it to support the stores better. Now that the trees are maturing, the street is taking on a different character. If it were up to me, I would go in there and plant even more trees, so that a nice shady canopy forms for pedestrians to enjoy.

Why doesn't Downtown have more interesting light fixtures. That standard one is ugly and out of place. Look at the Kennedy Bridge and the light fixtures it uses (Yboresque) Why don't they put those around town or a better looking one like the ones on N. Franklin?
Also Polk St... Why is that One Way? I think its less dangerous turning left and crossing the tracks rather than trying to switch lanes in between the tracks.

I don't know about that geometric thigamajigger we're getting for a children's museum... When I think of a children's museum, I think of something that I just want to climb all over and explore. It should be like a tree house, crossed with a maze, crossed with a funhouse.

And I don't care what anyone says about water restrictions and expense, I would find a way to have the baddest play fountain ever. To get around the water consumption issue, I would propose they install a commercial desal system that could draw from the river to provide clean water for any water features the city would install in the park. For those who are unfamiliar with them, such a system might take up the space of a queen size bed, and can provide thousands of gallons per day of potable water. Obviously the current water restrictions would be irrelevant for water drawn from such a source, and something innovative like this would surely garner some sort of federal grant to help get up and running. Hell, the thing could even be powered off of a few solar panels put up on the roof of one of the museums, or the Poe garage.

I agree... and that would be a great idea to conserve water. I think they should do something like a combination between Boston's big dig water park feature and the playground in Hyde park.

According to the TampaGov site; the Curtis Hixon Park renovation will have water play areas with fountains that shoot water up 20+ feet vertically. Here are some images:

yeah see, I think the water features we're getting kind of suck... But I digress. What we're getting it still way better than what was there before.

The most important thing is that the fountains actually RUN all of the time, not 2 months a year when water restrictions are lifted.

I think it would be great if they did something like the park in Boston built on top of the "Big Dig" project and combined it with the Anderson Park (Hyde Park) water area.

I think it would be good for Tampa to plant jacaranda trees in its public spaces, and particularly along the riverwalk. Jacaranda time in Tampa could rival cherry-blossom time in DC if enough trees were planted.

I love when the trees bloom (around April sometime, I think) with their lavender-colored flowers. The whole tree just changes color, as the blossoms cover every branch and leafy area. The remainder of the year, the trees are green and though not as dense as an oak tree, would still provide a fair amount of shade.

Using Jacaranda more would be cool. Also Sycamore( I know leaves all fall, but it's cooler so you don't need shade), different kinds of oak (White, Post, Virginian).

I do like Pines also. Though they probably have to be used carefully in Urban street environments. I have good memories of listening to the breeze blow through pine trees and smelling the pine scent after a rain shower. Also, they make me think of camping...

Palms are fine, I just don't care for the "Florida Look" mentality of all plams all the time.

July 30th, 2009, 05:38 PM
It really depends where you want to plant what kind of tree. Oak trees for example need a lot of root space. Thus, it is not recommended to plant them as street trees or in medians, unless they are given much more space than is usually provided. Also, oak trees don't do well in a concrete environment like parking lots. They have a hard time coping with the heat on large concrete areas. Palms do just fine in such an environment, that's why they are chosen so often. Jacaranda trees are very beautiful but they can also can cause problems with their roots and need much more space than street planners are willing to provide. Pine trees also look a lot better in parks than on streets, unless you choose the mediterranean "pinus pinea".

I personally like Tabebuia as street trees. Sea Grapes could be another nice option to add some lush vegetation as well as powderpuff trees.

If palms are the only option, I don't understand, why planners don't do clusters or just choose species with larger crowns. There are so many more palms available which would do well in Tampa Bay than palmetto or queen palms.

I think that both oaks mentioned are native to Florida. From what I've heard Laural Oaks grow fast but are suseptible to a disease that kills them at about 16-20 years. I know who cares about that long from now. But why not plant healthier cleaner varieties? Anyway, that's a pet peave of mine. I don't much like native Cabbage palms in landscaping unless pruned frequently, either. I'm pretty sure they are the cheapest palms around.

A pedestrian bridge would work nice there, but I don't see the public supporting any city money being put on such a project with the Beneficial Bridge and Harbour Island Bridge in the area. The only way it would happen is if Harbour Island funded the project or whatever rises at the corner of Morgan St. and Old Waters Dr.

Nice pics btw :)

The Harbour Island Bridge has nice big sidewalks and a good view and is about 100 yards away. I see no point. I would rather have a good pedestrian bridge across the river near Bayshore to connect - the bridges there are no pedestrian friendly at all.

Jasonhouse
August 10th, 2009, 07:54 AM
Actually, what would be really nice is if both bridges to Harbour Island were altered to include ramps directly from the bridge deck, to the riverwalk on both sides of Garrison Channel. People already use that as an exercise/leisure circuit in spite of the almost hostile path one must presently take from the riverwalks to the bridges. It would be well worth it to spend a few bucks and essentially expand the riverwalk project (and thus provide a way to fund the ramps), and improve pedestrian connectivity between Harbour Island and the rest of downtown.

Heck, the developments fronting the channel on the Harbour Island side might even chip in, so they can 'officially' say they're on the riverwalk too.

Well, the Beneficial bridge could suffice as-is, or without a lot being spent grading out more direct ramps than the ones that exist. It's really the Harbour Island Blvd bridge that needs reworked. Pedestrian access to the HI Blvd bridge is fairly sucky, and the planters plunked down in the middle of the otherwise generous sidewalks are a real pain. (never understood why they're there anyways, blocking the otherwise fantastic views)... Obviously for people to be able to jog or rollerblade past each other, a reasonably wide and clear path will be needed.

August 11th, 2009, 02:11 AM
I assume the planters are to protect the people from the cars and the site of cars (and everything else) - stairs would be useful

TampaMike
August 11th, 2009, 05:07 AM
Yeah, the Harbour Island Bridge sucks when it comes to working with the Riverwalk and Harbour Island side. On Harbour Island, you have to go up a set of enclosed staircases and I always have that thought pass my mind that someone might be waiting to rape or murder. And it smells of alcohol and piss anyways, so not pleasant at all. The Riverwalk side could be connected easily by a elevated walkway on the westside of bridge. The Harbour Island side would likely need a spiral walkway. The reason for walkways and not stairs is because I see atleast 2 or 3 mothers pushing strollers while jogging. And common sense wise, it's easier to jog up walkways than a flight of stairs.

Jasonhouse
August 11th, 2009, 01:08 PM
The reason for walkways and not stairs is a law called the Americans with Disabilities Act. And a spiral ramp would not meet that req unless it had a very large radius. (think stadium ramps).

but anyways, we're way off topic, as usual. :)

Nice pics, but they're slightly depressing... After this latest building boom, downtown Tampa still looks so sparse from the street compared to just about any other decent sized downtown in the south (notice not even bringing up the genuinely urban northern cities. Just talking about the cities Tampa competes with in the south for residents, jobs and investment).

While other downtowns either matured or were transformed from nothing to something, Tampa just keeps throwing ingredients in a bowl, without the foggiest clue how the pieces are supposed to be linked or made to work together in a harmonious fashion. If there's a city in the south with shittier urban planning than Tampa, I would love to know where it is. I've never been to another downtown that on paper had so much, yet seemed to have so little in person.

^^I agree downtown Tampa leaves a lot to be desired and if it weren't for the Commercial superiority downtown St. Petersburg would easily be the better downtown. Even then I've found only Miami or Miami Beach to be the only cities in Florida that have a decent urban feel.

Can you PLEASE let me know when you are running for city council so I can make a donation to your campaign, sir? ;)

The problem with Tampa is, that the city has so many areas in redevelopment at the same time. For a city its size, it takes a long time to fill up all the available space, even though, a lot has happened already. Maybe it would have been wiser to first focus on downtown before other areas would be considered....

Centralizing woudl be a plus. Politicians have liked to annex more and more land to the north to increase the tax base. They never thought of increasing densities first and building a strong center. At least that's how the race-to-the-suburbs turned out.

Some pics I snapped earlier this week. Before someone complains about no people in the park, I took them early on Monday morning, and deliberately waited for people to get out of the pics before snapping. :)

I know that I hardly (or never) post here, but I do look around, and I spend quite a bit of time taking photos downtown. Figured that I would finally contribute to this thread, and get a rather random plug for my shutterfly website (here) (mikesassortedrandomness.shutterfly.com), which has a lot of these pics. In no way do I purposely mean to take away from the thread, but I'd be happy to do enlargements and whatnot of any pics that people want for way cheaper than you'd think (just throwing it out there:cheers:). Hopefully this subtle business plug doesnt violate forum rules, as I don't want to be 'that guy'

No, that's fine... You just have to promise to post more... You can also put a pink in your signature line. Many people do that here, and we're ok with it.

And I thought I was the only one who knew the top of the South regional garage has some great views?! lol (I'm kidding of course)

Did you try bracketing that shot, so that the background lights didn't wash out?

Are you referring to the Forum lights? I don't mind the heavy starring from the street lights so much, and with the design of the 17-40L I actually think that the specific flare that they get is pretty interesting. The only issue that I would have with bracketing for the forum lights (and maybe the lights in the Hist. Center) is that I'll often bracket shots and or use fragments for a panorama and then come home and delete those helper shots too quickly during post processing because I have forgotten that I did that:bash:

haha... A buddy of mine who is a pro photographer has a high end Nikon that does it automatically... I remember going with him on a shoot last August (models on the beach with the sunset in the background, plus lights from a pier... We were up in Alabama), and I said something about the lighting condition and he was like, "that's okay watch this"... He took a shot, which went off multiple times, and then automatically created a beauty of a shot!

ps... This was my 10,000th post!... for the 2nd time...lol

There are a couple of residential midrises being built this year, but that's about it. maybe a midrise hotel will break ground sometime this year, to be open in time for the RNC.
