mirza-sm June 18th, 2006, 05:28 PM ^^ the national theatre has been renovated because of the Sarajevo Film Festival last year, thats why it looks the same :D
SpotlessMind June 18th, 2006, 05:33 PM It hurts to see Vijecnica like that. It will probably be rebuild to it's old glory but the priceless literature is lost forever.
But indeed, as for the rest... it's all rebuild or better. I must say though, that it was a lot cleaner back then. Especially outside downtown...
Mimar June 18th, 2006, 10:19 PM I hope the parlament building wont be renovated in it`s old shape :D
Sarajka wont be renovated in it`s old shape too, I`m sure 100% :D

An all glass skyscraper in the shape of the current Parliament would look excellent. MAL is doing the reconstruction, and they specialize in glass. Having three current all glass skyscrapers and other two in the near future, Sarajevo will have the best skyline in all of Ex-Yugoslavia.

hehe, Sarajevo looked really like world, it didn't look as good as today, but you all look it estetically, and few of you know the real spirits of a city, and that's just what a city is. Sarajevo had really great spirit before, and you can see it by faces of people! but all of the good people when war started went out , to Sweden, Switz, Germany.. and many peasents came, just as in other big cities in ex :YU But it kept the fun.
I can just imagine how Sarajevo looked like during the olympic games, does anyone have picture of that?
Sarajevo is a jewel of Balkans!
Islom June 22nd, 2006, 02:19 AM My father was in Sarajevo during the Olympics...before, during & after....his company was in charge of setting up all the telecom. systems & antennas that would beam the events around the world...he still has great memories from the city that he tells me about now & then... and quite a lot of photos which I may scan soon :)
Those were the days, I guess.

Try visiting Sarajevo to actually see what it's like. :| There are rarely any woman that cover their heads. And they probably existed back then too, but just didn't go outside as much as they can now.
Sarajevo's population might have left, but the true spirit of Sarajevo still hasn't gone anywhere. Sure, a couple of years of war might have tired the people out. It might have made them less hopefull for a better tomorrow, but it the real Sarajlija is still there.
Oh, and in my opinion, most of Sarajevo looks better now than it did back then. Many facades back then were rotting worse than they are now, and there was much less color around the city.

I don't know what you are talking about, but you have such a wrong view of Sarajevo.
Old women cover up yes, but if you look at recent pictures you wont see one girl cover up. So really, I don't see how you manage to make this up?
But w/, Serbs always have their way of looking at Bosniaks I guess. ;)
Tourist June 22nd, 2006, 10:54 AM Beautiful
BL June 22nd, 2006, 11:13 AM well anybody who has ever been to sarajevo after the war knows that there are a girls that are covered.

There is nothing wrong with a little nostalgia
well anybody who has ever been to sarajevo after the war knows that there are a girls that are covered.
In Amsterdam there are way more covered girls and women than in Sarajevo.

Yeah, I kinda figured...I was in Croatia with my family last year....I thought maybe it was the same as Bosnia or Serbia, you know; you speak the same language and stuff..Croatia was beautiful, and I really want to go to Belgrade and Sarajevo. But first Istanbul and Budapest!
Belgrade Girl June 22nd, 2006, 11:42 AM Nice photos but it looks much better today
MIMICA June 22nd, 2006, 12:23 PM well anybody who has ever been to sarajevo after the war knows that there are a girls that are covered.
Just like before?
And I don't see what's so wrong with covering up either. If the woman chooses to do so, let her. It's not like it looks weird or whatever.
Drea June 22nd, 2006, 12:55 PM ^^ To be honest, I think covering up nowadays in Sarajevo is a part import-islam, before the war almost no girl or women in Sarajevo wore a headscarf.
montesky June 22nd, 2006, 01:06 PM I LOVE the old picture of Sarajka. The picture of Tito & Jovanka in Titova is awesome as well :)
I agree!
SpotlessMind June 22nd, 2006, 01:46 PM ^^ To be honest, I think covering up nowadays in Sarajevo is a part import-islam, before the war almost no girl or women in Sarajevo wore a headscarf.
Some older generations/older women did. But as today, it was a minority. But real import-islam was going on during the war, when some women of newly formed Muslim families started to wear those burkas. It was as a real contest of who is the biggest Muslim. lol After the war, when it all becamse less and less important... all of the sudden they went off. Those people area a joke.
Nowadays, covered women can only be found in the religious areas of the city: Old Town. I'd say 5% and 1% as of the whole city. Pretty much how it was before the war. I know that some suits a more Islamized view of Sarajevo but they have no grounds to stand on.
Drea June 22nd, 2006, 01:50 PM ^^ And it should be kept that way! Sarajevo is a multireligious, tolerant city and it would be a shame if one of the religions would dominate.
ckm June 22nd, 2006, 02:56 PM Thanxs for the pics. I didn't know anything about SJ but the 90s war.
The city looked really European in these pictures, and it seemed to be beautiful. I'm looking for threads about Sarajevo today right now, I want to see how it is being reconstructedˇ :)
Maddoxx June 22nd, 2006, 03:57 PM There are covered girls in Sarajevo ,. but don't understand why anyone should be annoyed by that . It's a part of Muslim culture .
Maddoxx June 22nd, 2006, 03:59 PM ^^ And it should be kept that way! Sarajevo is a multireligious, tolerant city and it would be a shame if one of the religions would dominate.
But don't you think that one religion already dominates ????
And it has been dominating in the last 16 years.
Drea June 22nd, 2006, 04:22 PM But don't you think that one religion already dominates ????
And it has been dominating in the last 16 years.
You might be right that the Muslim religion dominates now more that it did 16 years ago, but I however don't agree with that trend. (But I can't stop it either)
Mimar June 22nd, 2006, 07:00 PM I don`t have anything against the women that cover their heads but I`m against the women that cover all their body except their eyes, and I`m not ashamed of this, because it`s my religion. If half the women of Sarajevo cover their heads I wont mind :)
SpotlessMind June 22nd, 2006, 07:19 PM You might be right that the Muslim religion dominates now more that it did 16 years ago, but I however don't agree with that trend. (But I can't stop it either)
Sarajevo started off as a full blown Muslim city. Build by Muslims, for Muslims. One of the first buildings build was a Mosque. It has actually become less Muslim during centuries but Islam always remained the dominant religion in the city. However ''dominating'' is very relative here since the majority is secular. If it wasn't for mosques you wouldn't have a clue that Muslims live there. Religion is simply a non-issue for most of the people in the city, including the Christians. You got your annual Bajram and Christmas but that's pretty much it.

When was the last time you were there ?
Drea June 22nd, 2006, 07:29 PM ^^ I wouldn't say that the majority of the inhabitants of Sarajevo is still secular. First of all, many refugees from the rural areas of the country moved to Sarajevo (and we all know that people in rural areas are largely religious, so they took their religion with them). Second of all, many former secularists who were born Muslim now turn to their religion - even people in my family from whom I never expected that they would (re-)state their Muslim identity. Thirdly, look at all the new mosques in the city - From all of this, I would say that Sarajevo is de-secularizing.
SpotlessMind June 22nd, 2006, 08:01 PM Those refugees have mostly returned. They were very much so visible right after the war and stacked up in certain areas, and now they are no-where to be seen. There are humanitarian reports about the refugees in Sarajevo and most returned. Some even had to since the laws made it impossible for them to stay in housing that wasn't theirs.
As for the people turing to Islam, I have seen that as well with some people in my family but it was all in the eye of SDA rule and who's the biggest Muslim. People were showing off and I now dozens of people who now calmed downa again. My uncle was a good example. Never a believer, the war started and he all of the sudden turned Muslim in order to fit in with the regular ideology. Nowadays not much is to be seen of his refound believes. It's just as with the headscarfs, they exploded during the war and the years after they went off again. It's all make believe Drea.
You should take a look at the visiting numbers of Mosques, they are low. And I don't see anything holy or religious about the way people in the city approach issues as alcohol and sex. They are trying to outdo the west and end up being more skankier than here. Ask the new generation to say a prayer, you'll see the reaction." They do know what the newest drug out is.
And as for the new mosques, the only new one I know is the one at Alipasino, one on the road to Vogosca, what else? What more new mosques are there?
Perhaps I have an appartment in the wrong neighbourhood(novo sarajevo) and socialize with the ''wrong'' people but I fail to see how the majority of people is anything close to religious. ;) Are my friends just skanks?

ivan330Ci June 22nd, 2006, 08:43 PM You are right. There are many of them to moved in Sarajevo from rural areas. Better chance for employment and what not. I love Sarajevo. Sarajevo is what brings memories of the Olympics games and glory days of Yugoslavia. IMHO , I think Sarajevo is losing that charm.

Mamino Zlato June 22nd, 2006, 09:12 PM SARAJEVO (AFP) 6/16/2006 - The people of Sarajevo, renowned for their pluralism, have been shaken after a series of incidents including the murder of a Muslim woman by her Islamic extremist son who questioned her faith.
Upholders of Bosnia's moderate version of Islam say the problem caused by an influx of hardline fighters during the country's 1992-1995 war has worsened in recent months, highlighted by the gruesome murder.
"Bosnia's tradition of Islam is tolerant, it promotes pluralism and we should not allow those representing a one-track ideology to teach us," says Jasmin Merdan.
The 26-year-old -- a practising Muslim who portrays himself as a "victim" of the Wahhabi ideology before abandoning it -- is one of the few courageous voices in Bosnia who dares to criticise extremism.
"They express their convictions with violence, introduce anarchy in mosques and preach intolerance," says Merdan, who recently founded an association in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo to fight against "those who deny basic teachings of Islam".
Supported by a handful of independent journalists, Merdan recently published a book condemning the harmful influence on Bosnian people of Wahhabism, a radical version of Islam.
Merdan says the book was "warmly welcomed by imams who do not dare to speak" but sparked death threats against him and pressure from members of the Wahhabi community.
Several incidents since the beginning of the year have shaken Sarajevo and confirmed Merdan's fears.
In February, a young man who recently converted to Wahhabism killed his mother reportedly because she refused to join him for morning prayers.
After the murder, the 23-year-old went to a "Wahhabi" mosque with blood on his hands and clothes, telling his fellow believers that he just made a "sacrifice to God".
In addition, several young couples have complained to the local media and police that they had been harassed by "bearded" men in parks while they were kissing and hugging.
According to Merdan, they were members of the so-called "Sharia militia" -- a group of self- styled religious police. However local police said they were not aware of the group's existence.
Wahhabism is a hardline version of Islam that originated in 18th century Saudi Arabia. It took its roots in Bosnia, whose Muslims are mostly followers of moderate Islam, in the country's 1992- 1995 war.
During the conflict, hundreds of volunteers from Islamic countries -- known as "holy warriors" or mujahedin -- came to Bosnia to fight alongside its mainly Muslim army.
All of the foreign fighters were expected to leave the country following the war, but an unknown number of them remained and obtained Bosnian citizenship mostly by marrying local women.
"Since the war, the number of followers of Wahhabism has been growing," says Merdan, slamming the "passiveness" of Bosnia's laic and religious authorities.
Some 40 percent of Bosnia's 3.8 million inhabitants are Muslims. Orthodox Christian Serbs represent about 31 percent, while Roman Catholic Croats account for around 10 percent.
Merdan voiced regret that the Bosnian Muslim religious leader, Mustafa Ceric, has never publicly condemned the activities of the Wahhabists.
Meanwhile, the editor-in-chief of a Bosnian weekly, Vildana Selimbegovic, deplored the "isolation" of the few Muslim theologians who voice their dissatisfaction with the presence of Wahhabists.
"Politicians do no want to or are too afraid to talk. The majority of Muslims remain silent. It seems that they will remain silent until the devil claims his due," Selimbegovic wrote in the weekly Dani.
Sarajevo's imposing King Fahd Mosque, named after the late Saudi monarch who financed its construction, has in the past few years become the core of Bosnian followers of Wahhabism.
"Sometimes I ask myself whether I am really in Sarajevo. The number of bearded men and women dressed in chadors will soon be equal to other people," comments Adnan, a young Muslim who lives near the mosque.
Adnan says that the King Fahd Mosque has attracted a number of Wahhabi families from surrounding neighborhoods.
"They try the same recipe as in Sudan or other Arab countries," says Merdan.
"If we allow them, in 20 years, people like me will not be allowed to speak," he stresses.

SpotlessMind June 22nd, 2006, 10:07 PM Those people should be deported! Adjust or leave!
However the article screams sensationalism. Some of the quotes are over exaggerated. I barely see any of them. You would have to go looking for them at that Mosque if you want to encounter one. But this is more newsworthy ofcourse.
But I'll have some public oral sex at night along the Miljacka, we'll see if someone approaches me... in a bad way that is. :D
Drea June 22nd, 2006, 10:39 PM I got this by e-mail a few days ago, it's similar to the article above:
Excerpt from report by Bosnian TV One Public Secret programme on
25 May
[Presenter] The authorities and the Islamic Community have been
pushing under the carpet the problem of radical Wahabbis for years. This
increasingly massive movement in Bosnia-Hercegovina wants to rule
the streets and mosques. Wahabbis say that the Muslims of Bosnia-
Hercegovina have lost their way and they should be brought back to original
Islam. The Muslims here, on the other hand, reply: Only God knows who the
true believeris. Merima Spahic has investigated ways of operation of Wahabbis and existence of Shari'ah police.
[Reporter] This the place in Sarajevo [video footage of the location] where,
as witnesses say, a month ago, a group of men jumped out of an
unregistered van one night and chased away couples. This incident occurred at the parking lot near Sarajevo's Jezero hospital, and it was caused, as
witnesses said, by members of the so-called Shari'ah police. This case was not reported to the regular police.
[Passage omitted, police official from Sarajevo Canton Ministry
of Interior urges citizens to report these and similar cases]
[Reporter] On the other hand, the state Ministry of Security
believes that such occurrences, which were imported to Bosnia-Hercegovina,
represent a threat against citizens' security.
[Dragan Mektic, Bosnian deputy minister of security] There should
be absolutely no dilemma that these persons should be identified and
processed accordingly.
[Enes Ljevakovic, Faculty of Islamic Studies] There are
absolutely no assumptions for creation of such a movement here. Bosnia-
Hercegovina is a secular state, and religion does not have significant influence, at least not in the public sphere.
[Passage omitted, vox populi, young people against "Shari'ah
police"]
[Reporter] Although these cases are rarely reported to the
police, as victims are ashamed to admit they were interrupted during
passionate moments, a former member of the radical Islamic movement,
participated himself in a couple of similar actions several years ago.
[Jasmin Merdan, former Wahabbi] Wahabbis exist and this is not a
secret at all. They have been very strong since the beginning of the war
and after the war. They have had good reception among wider masses. They exist now in a variable number, which cannot be determined precisely,
particularly because these are not only young men with long beards and short trousers or women with veils, but they also have a great number of people that do not look like this and a great number of supporters, particularly among the youth.
[Reporter] Jasmin Merdan and Adnan Mesanovic left the Wahabbis a
couple of years ago. They owe their conversion to science and education.
They are now law-abiding citizens of our country, while only a couple of years ago, they were prepared to commit any type of violence.
[Merdan] When someone promises you that you will become a shahid
[Islamic martyr] by the way of blowing yourself up or doing something else
Muslims need, if at the time when I was a kid in secondary school someone
persuaded me to do this, I would not have refrained at all.
[Reporter] [Passage omitted, description of the recent book
written by these two former Wahabbis about differences between traditional and
radical Islam]
[Merdan] It is a fact that they exist. It is fact that they demolished bars serving alcohol in Zenica and shaved off hair of girls who bathed
at Bosnia riverside, that they beat up boys and girls holding hands or kissing.
[Passage omitted]
[Reporter] Whether different interpretations of Islam should be
considered an advantage or disadvantage, we could not get this answer from
members of the Wahabbi school, as they did not want to appear before our
cameras. Finally, we ask the question: does Islam, as a peaceful and
tolerant religion, deserve to be frequently mentioned in the world in a
negative context because of a group of people, who because of their
superficial knowledge of religion, create a negative image of this religion?
SpotlessMind June 22nd, 2006, 10:51 PM Hmm, I guess they won't be too happy with the newly formed ''Gay Rights Association'' in Sarajevo either! ;)
Seriously, get them out of the country. Period. Or at least put them in jail... no, it's cheaper to deport.
Krasna Sreča June 22nd, 2006, 10:52 PM ^^ Ah what retards, I like the moderate Islam in BiH, its better off that way!

Agreed! I hope Sarajevo and as well as BiH will take more effort to keep its state a peacfull one with multi religions.
SpotlessMind June 22nd, 2006, 10:53 PM Yah, it seems those couples having a go on the street would agree with you!
SpotlessMind June 22nd, 2006, 10:54 PM Agreed! I hope Sarajevo and as well as BiH will take more effort to keep its state a peacfull one with multi religions.
It's not just about multi-religious, they want to change the way of life which is unacceptable! If they don't like it in BiH, move!
Krasna Sreča June 22nd, 2006, 10:55 PM ^^ I grew up in a multi religious country where a serb a bosniak and croat would play together, talk and so on. And If I was in charge or could help I would deff send their asses to jail.
Krasna Sreča June 22nd, 2006, 10:57 PM It's not just about multi-religious, they want to change the way of life which is unacceptable! If they don't like it in BiH, move!
100% agree! I don't want some idiots messing with the life of the people, the people can choose how they want to live their own individual lives.
BL June 22nd, 2006, 11:29 PM ^^ And it should be kept that way! Sarajevo is a multireligious, tolerant city and it would be a shame if one of the religions would dominate.
sarajevo was multireligious, tolerant city and it is a shame that it is not anymore.
SpotlessMind June 22nd, 2006, 11:33 PM Ironic coming from someone out of BL! Please tell, what's about Sarajevo that's not multi-religious or not tolerant?
BL June 22nd, 2006, 11:41 PM if i say that than these forum will be all about that.. so i will make full stop here.

Funny you mention that; the commieblocks in Sarajevo indeed look way better than the ones in -for example- Bratislava or something.

Well Sarajevo was once part of a rather developed nation, so there is some explanation for the better quality of the commieblocks. Although, the historical area did seem pretty dilapidated, which was all too common with EE cities during the communist era.

SaRaJeVo-City January 8th, 2007, 09:08 AM for some reason I never knew this thread existed...its awesome, wow I must say that Sarajevo now looks 100 times better then before the war...One thing I like about old sarajevo was that it was clean, the bridges had flowers on the side and the walls surrounding miljacka river seem to be in a much better condition....no grass spots growing on the sides, very nicley kept...but still Sarajevo has changed A LOT....its quite insane..

HerrParhom May 14th, 2011, 06:41 AM Does anyone have pictures of some of the Novo Sarajevo or Novi Grad apartment buildings up close? Both the shorter ones and taller ones? Also, on the inside? I've only ever seen pictures of such buildings from the outside, usually far away.
Yugoslavia had the best modern architecture of all Europe; optimistic and future oriented. Sarajevo had some the best, too, because it was developed so much in the late '60s-mid '80s. I'm sad to see it all decaying because no one wants to remember Yugo, it seems.
SJ really was uniquely beautiful in the way it blended Ottoman, Austrian and SFRJ architecture, all surrounded by those gorgeous hills. One of the most interesting look cities in the world! Too bad all the trees had to be cut down and so many of the less important buildings couldn't be saved. The rounded, glass skyscrapers don't fit in with the concrete and square shapes. The city looks depressing now, as does most of the ex-Yu, with some very new and shiny buildings mixed with neglected, damaged 20th century modern architecture and pastel stucco renovations on buildings which were never supposed to be those colors.
Don't worry: I'm critical of everywhere and most US cities other than San Fransisco and NYC look like uninspired garbage. We would be lucky to have a city as breathtaking as Sarajevo.
leopol May 16th, 2011, 04:12 PM Could you be more precise with descriptions of photos you would like to see?
Whole buildings, or close-ups to mezzanine and first floor. Also, what you would like to see inside: entrance hall or apartments?
I can easily agree that former Yugoslavia had best architecture among other Eastern European countries, but I doubt about all Europe. It's better that Nordic countries or UK, but in other countries, there are much better buildings when it comes to apartment blocks.
Generally speaking, architecture from 1950's was superb, 1960's were complete disaster and new approach came in 1970-80's with much much better architecture.
Also, state-built apartments in ex-Yu, at least in Bosnia, had quite high level of comfort and quality: parquet-floors, ceramics, heating, etc, etc....
Fazla May 16th, 2011, 08:26 PM Even if born before the war, I left the country that I was too small to remember anything about it yet alone Sarajevo's architecture... but judging from pictures, and by what some older people say, architecturally even if people find it hard to believe, it looks better now. I didn't say it looks uber-good, not at all but when some U/C projects will be finished and some important facades renovated, than it's gonna be even more visible how it looks better now.
Just my completely personal and humble opinion, open to any criticism.
leopol May 16th, 2011, 09:22 PM Are you sure that you ment architecture?
If you mean urban planning and infrastructure, it could be discussed, but when it comes to architecture, any comparsion to modern Western European architecture (beside social state-built residential blocks and just few public buildings) is quite silly.
The same is for today's architecture, if we compare it to that one from 1970-1990, it's poor!
Current gap between Bosnia' and present Western European architecture is much bigger than gap that was between 1970's ex-Yugoslavia's and that time modern West Europe architecture.
Even more, when it comes to apartment buildings, most of the architects here struggle to achieve quality and standards from 30 or 40 years ago.
Fazla May 17th, 2011, 12:07 AM I wasn't really speaking about comparisons with other European cities, just about Sarajevo's pre-war and (nowadays) post-war situation.
leopol May 17th, 2011, 10:02 AM aaaa, all right then :)
