GNU June 19th, 2006, 12:29 PM those sources are all wrong.
I just had a look at the billionaire source and it states that Russia has 8 whereas in fact it has around 60.
The figures for the UK, Germany, Japan were also wrong.
If you wanna post sources than dont give me this nonsense.
billionaires:
1. US
2. Germany
3. Russia
4. UK
thats how it goes.
There has been a large thread about this in the DLM in the euroscrapers section.
Youre figures/sources are simply wrong
GNU June 19th, 2006, 12:33 PM btw: most of your links dont even work. I have the suspicion that you are just making things up here.
btw: the EU is leading the way in many fields. Exceptions could be the media/film business for example where we dont have anything to say at all which is a bit embarassing.

Its amazing that Germany accounts for almost all exports from the EU.
Germany is the biggest exporting country in the world but I would have thought that the UK, France and Italy are ranking not so far behind.
anyways this source looks much more like the real deal.
pottebaum June 19th, 2006, 03:41 PM me or the thread starter???
The thread starter.
Mr Bricks June 19th, 2006, 04:01 PM - The EU is better to live in because the standard of living is much higher (i.e. much better health care, social security, infrastructure, less violence and crime, no death penalty etc...)
- The EU has far greater cities.
- The EU has more interesting history
- The EU has a older and much nicer culture
- The European lifestyle is better for me
^^ and all those are facts except for the last one.
It´s ridiculous to think that one nation could be better than 25 nations together, although there are nice things in the states.
pottebaum June 19th, 2006, 04:08 PM ^No, Suomi, you can argue quality of life, but the standard of living usually pertains to wealth--in which the United States beats Europe.

pottebaum June 19th, 2006, 04:09 PM And now I know why you and I have had such trouble deciding what's a fact and what isn't. You don't know the definition!
Which entity has greater cities, which has a more interesting history, and which one has a "nicer" culture are all opinions. (which, as a whole, I tend to agree with)
pottebaum June 19th, 2006, 04:11 PM boricuba....you could please just shut up? Listen, I defend the US quite a bit on these forums, and you're just driving everyone crazy.

The U.S is the worlds markets and the worlds #1 importer thanks to your Mercedez benz, Bmw that we love!
Did you know Daimler Benz sell more Mercedez in the U.S than Germany
that also goes for BMW.
BenL June 19th, 2006, 04:18 PM Thank you Pottebaum. People like Boricuba (and of course your president) are what give your country a bad name abroad. I wonder how many times he's visited EU countries...
I don't think countries can be judged on the basis of what are mainly economic factors. Frankfurt is Germany's richest city but if I were to live in Germany, I can think of several cities I'd prefer to live in: Money isn't everything. I also think it's pretty childish to have a final view on which is BETTER, why does one need to be BETTER. And anyway, one is a country, one is an economic and political trading bloc.
I think there's many more contrasts in Europe in a small area and as much as I like the places in America I've visited, I think I'd prefer to stay in Europe. I'd like to discuss culture and similar things as long as it doesn't become a slagging match but of course it's very difficult when the EU has many governments; as much as some would like it, the EU isn't one country.
Edit: I would guess that is because the US is (roughly) three times the size of Germany. Britain is particular is a huge exporter of tertiary goods - services - like insurance companies and banking but exports relatively few manufactured goods. Perhaps tertiary goods are not included in your list.
boricuba June 19th, 2006, 04:21 PM boricuba....you could please just shut up? Listen, I defend the US quite a bit on these forums, and you're just driving everyone crazy.
I am just posting facts.
It does not matter waht you say Europeans are going to say that E.U which is not a country is better than U.S
And the Americans are going to say the U.S is better than E.U
But this forum is about facts!
EU vs USA
I do admit that Europe is Beutifull with more history and culture than the U.S will ever have. The U.S has only 229 of Being a country we cannot compete.
I think the German people are very discipline, determined, and mot proporous country in Europe.
I think when it comes to free thinking and embracing life or the Dolce Vita Europe has a very best good quality of livings specially in countries like Spain, Italy where people work to live and dont live to work!
I think is comendable the institution of the E.U in order to be equtitital in wealth management within the reagion helping poor countries to become rich. Example Spain now is a develop country!
But the E.U is not a country! that is because each memebers maintains their sovereignity unlike American states which are Provinces of the U.S and have no Soveireignty. The E.U is still in diapers and has a long way to go yet!
BenL June 19th, 2006, 04:26 PM The EU is an economic bloc like NAFTA. The countries have hugely diverse cultures and most consider they are getting on fine without giving up sovereignty. I believe the EU has a positive role to play and I'm no isolationist; I'd like to see us getting involved in Europe more but there's no way I'd like the UK to be just a state of Europe.
How many times and where have you visited in Europe?
pottebaum June 19th, 2006, 04:36 PM I am just posting facts.
Well good for you. But why? Is there any need to post all this crap?
boricuba June 19th, 2006, 04:42 PM Well good for you. But why? Is there any need to post all this crap?

The E.U deals with more social issues than Nafta.
Nafta is just a free trade agreement!
pottebaum June 19th, 2006, 04:49 PM You called it Crap! I called it Facts!
Why do you feel a need to post all this 'facts', then?
boricuba June 19th, 2006, 05:09 PM Why do you feel a need to post all this 'facts', then?
This forum is about Infrastructure & Mobility and the question of the E.U Vs U.S was not posted by me in this forum. It is my obligation as a educated person to debate with facts and not demagogue. The E.U Vs U.S.A in technology was taken out by moderators last night and i posted it again! because it simply got out of hand. Some people call me troll but i was not the person that started disrespecting the others. There is a forumer which is not me that has been kicked out of the forum many times he started insulting me personally saying that Spain does not have anything in common in latin American calling us Black, Indians with no culture. Believe me I want to always stick to the Thread and forum question but they are people that get mad because i do not decorate the facts and i am passionate it about it.
If you are from America or not! Dont try to be the Mediator or peacemaker because we are here to debate post threads and discuss them not to make freinds

Germany still exports 1.5 times more than China does.
We export more to China than we import which means that we actually make money trading with China whereas the US has a massive trade deficit with them.
China will overtake Germany quite soon on a economic basis if they can sustain their growth rates for a further 6 yeras or so.
however they will probably not challenge Germanys position as the worlds biggest exporter anytime soon as Chinas and Germanys export rates are growing at around the same pace.
I think the german growth rates are even higher even though so many countries including Germany are shifting their production plants to China and eastern europe.
And yes, the US is the biggest importer, but is that actually a good thing?
It certainly does no harm as long as you are exporting more than you import.
And Im sure that the US does that.
However it is worrying that the US runs a big trade deficit with China and other states.
It costs money.
Im also sure that all of our car makers sell more cars in the US than here in Germany. Afterall the US just has a far bigger population than Germany and therefore their market is bigger.
But Im sure that they sell just as much here in Europe.
And american car makers are also selling a lot here.
sarflonlad June 19th, 2006, 05:33 PM Can everyone stop responding to the nonsense boricuba posts?
In another thread he suggested that it was irrelevant Norway and Luxembourg had higher GDPs per capita than the USA because they were much smaller countries.
His arguments in this same thread also started with the 22 [sic] member states of the EU.
He also made all sorts of general claims and then when told otherwise (e.g. NY doesn't have the largest mass transit network) he disputed them by saying stuff like "I was actually referring to passenger numbers - the only true way to define a system's size" (and even this was wrong).
DONT FEED THE FIRE!

In regards that i said that Lux and Norway were not to be counted was for the comment that when i posted the link in which you debated that still overall with 26 countries E.U GDP per capita was way lower than U.S you pointed out that was because of Newbie countries!

Please WTO Reports on China it will surpaseed Germany!
The only thing that i see good for Germany so far is Angela Merkel finally a pro american! She needs to make Germany economy gow because for the last 5 years it has been in recession i am not sure about german grwoth but it does not pass the 2%.
Those kinds of growth were seen in america when sept 11 2001 that shock the world! Germany needs to boost its local economy and not depend solely on German Imports!

Total GDP 2005 US#1 over E.U
www.photius.com/rankings/economy/gdp_2005_o.html
Nope ! :bash: :bash: :bash:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28PPP%29
According to the World Bank AND the International Monetary Fund, the 2005 GDP (PPP) of the European Union is clearly larger than that of the US. Only CIA Factbook, understandably biased, gives a contrary opinion (also remember that the CIA Factbook, in contradiction to most sources, lists the US ahead China in terms of area, which is wrong). Your link is mainly based on the CIA "Fact"book.
Conclusion: Total GDP 2005 of EU is larger than that of the US. I don't see how your link (which moreover does not work) can be more reliable than the World Bank and the IMF.
GDP per Capita US # 1 over E.U
www.photius.com/rankings/economy/gdp_per_capita_2005_o.html
Right. But though numbers do not lie, they can be nuanced and interpreted:
Primo, EU data are, to a very large extent, biased by arbitrary terrtitorial expansion. The EU is economically very heterogenous, and, more importantly, some very wealthy European countries - Iceland, Norway, Switzerland - are not part of the EU !
Secondly, GDP per capita does not tell much about the quality of life. Let's make the point here: the GDP (PPP) per capita of Spain 2005 is $26,320, that of Taiwan is $27,572 (source:Wikipedia). This is comparable to the US state of ... Missouri or Alabama (whose 2003 GDP per capita were respectively $29,464 and $26,505). However, as everybody can guess thanks to his/her basic common sense, it's better living in Spain or Taiwan than in the state of Missouri or Alabama. Indeed, welfare states, as EU countries are to different extents, often tend to have quite low GDP per capita.

the sites dont tell me anything at all.
I think you missed the point though. I was talking about the growth of export rates.
And Germany is leading in this field. We have had substantial growth in our exports thats why we overtook the US in 2002 and they are still rising.
To be honest Im too lazy to look it up now but its true.
and Germany and the EU for that matter are highly technologized. We dont need to recognize that.
thats why we export so much.
Opposed to other countries like the US we dont have any oil to sell.
Germany and Japan arent in the oil business which accounts for the biggest profits in both the US and the UK.
The only thing that we can make money with is intellectual property and the financial business.
I think that Germany ranks second in the world when it comes to patent rights.
That shows you how much is invested here in intellectual property.

Paved Highway in Km US #1 Over E.U
www.photius.com/rankings/transportation/highways_2005_o.html
This, far from reflecting any kind of US hegemony, simply tells a difference in paradigm/pattern of transport and budget spending between the US and the EU. By the way, how come you spend so much for the controversial Medicare without even reaching the healthcare level enjoyed in Europe ? Hah you should feel thankful I didn't mention Defense and Homeland Security !

Railway Systems overall US #1
www.photius.com/rankings/transportation/railways_2005_o.html
Define "overall". Numbers do not lie, but words can be manipulated. May I also offer you the lead paragraph of Wikipedia article on TRANSPORT IN EUROPE:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transportation_in_Europe
Transport in Europe is the most advanced in the world. It caters for over half a billion people. The continent is home to some of the world's largest airlines, the largest ports and the fastest trains on the planet. Rotterdam Europort is the busiest port in the world, passing goods in and out of the port with a value worth more then the budget of most countries every day. British Airways, Lufthansa, Ryanair and Air France-KLM are all located in Europe catering for millions of people. Europe also houses the world's fastest train, the TGV. Operated in France and Switzerland, it can bring people all over the country, from the Alps to the Côte d'Azur. The Channel Tunnel connects the United Kingdom with France and Belgium and is considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world. The European Highway is a road made up of various highways and motorways that runs through every European country which begins in Ireland and ends in Turkey.

While the article is somewhat subjective and does sound amateurish, it is not exactly wrong.

Tyson June 19th, 2006, 07:42 PM HAHAHA I love these kind of threads!! Don't lock it it's hilarious! This boricuba guy is an absolute idiot but its so funny.
America has more billionaries? Even if that's true what does that have to do with anything? Are you a billionaire? America is #1 for Walmarts too. YAY!!!! America is #1 in current account deficit! Awesome!! America is #4 most likely to suffer a terrorist attack! America is #1 in military expenditure!
Do you just spend you time looking up facts about America? Do you get off on it or something? Try travelling the world a bit or opening your mind. You will realise that life doesn't revolve around the number of cell phones per capita.

If you wish to add more to this discussion in every sector the U.S leads i also have Wto Links that the U.S not only will continue leading but it will grow due that the U.S is the most Competitive country on Earth!
NO MORE ARGUMENTS!
:weirdo:
Some final remarks:
(1) First, you obviously confused competitiveness and growth. The competitiveness of a country basically measures how "safe" it is to do business in that country. It just tells you about business risks, not growth. So your reasoning above is totally incorrect.
(2) Secondly, you repeatedly interchange between EU and separate european countries when compared to the US. No need to say this is blatant manipulation.
(3) Thirdly, most of your facts are totally irrelevant. :) For example, what is the point that the US leads the world in terms of tourist expenditure ? The only conclusion I can draw from that is the US is basically more expensive than France or Spain (because fewer tourists end up spending more) ! Then again, there is also manipulation here, because you did not mention the EU data for tourist expenditure, just France or Spain !
(4) Quite a few of your facts are absolutely incorrect, like the US the most competitive country in the world. The most competitive one is in fact, since 2003 (and except in sources like CIA), Finland.
(5) Last but not least, you are contradicting yourself when repeating that the EU is not a country. It looks as if you're afraid the EU starts to look like a country. If the EU is really just an incoherent bloc, why does it matter so much to you to have it bashed before the United States ? Hah.
