Talisker April 23rd, 2003, 11:18 AM For a city of this size and importance I have to say I'm a little disapointed by the unimaginative design of many of these buildings. The overall effect is quite good though and the city is in a beautiful natural setting.
6/10, but could be much better.
renell April 23rd, 2003, 12:27 PM 6 like the natural setting, but not much on the scrapers

ParraMan January 19th, 2004, 07:19 PM 7.5
Absolutely stunning setting for a great city, the buildings themselves seem generally a bit old and conformist. Needs a bit more height and density built up. That last pic looks really good, but I can't work out what it is in relation to the other pics posted.

It's a pity about our skyline's density, though if I'm not mistaken one of the main reasons for the lack of high rises is the fact that very strict policies are in place as not to obstruct views.

annman April 1st, 2008, 03:15 PM People seem to wonder why the low skyline, where are the big skyscrapers etc.? Not that Cape Town doesn't have the demand for high-end, very expensive office space (it actually hosts the most expensive commercial real estate in Africa). We cannot build skyscrapers due to stringent regulations. The backdrop of Cape Town is Table Mountain, and no building is allowed by law to obstruct views towards it. Also, due to high prevailing winds (South-Easter in summer/North-Wester in winter), the city council also limits height to curb the urban-wind-tunnel effect. Cape Town has the urban anatomy more of a European city, rather than the urban anatomy of Asian or American cities; thus, historic buildings, narrower roads, quainter neighbourhoods, high demand for space, low-rise uber contemporary buildings etc. One major exception to that is that we have motorways that actually enter the city-proper.

ikops September 8th, 2010, 11:40 AM This city has the big advantage of its surroundings. The buildings however aren't all that great. (8/10)

Dean_14 October 28th, 2011, 06:28 AM 7.5 in terms of skyline
i love Cape!
Dimethyltryptamine October 28th, 2011, 07:55 AM Don't kill me, but the skyline is well and truly overrated. I'd vote about 6/10 max. Has plenty of potential, but at the moment it's not so good.

Im from CT and I agree fully. The city has set a height limit, as not to spoil the mountain view. Also because of the tunnel effect that tall buildings create with the notorious South Easter wind that blows in Summer.

What is the height limit? If it's there to protect the mountain vista then I'm entirely for it. Table Mountain is incredible and should remain Cape Town's true skyline.
