Mr. Detroit April 23rd, 2003, 01:58 AM What do you think of the "Big Easy", New Orleans? The population for this city in the state of Louisiana is 1,337,726. (Couldn't find many good pics, so if you can find some, please feel free to post).

Mr. Detroit April 23rd, 2003, 02:01 AM My opinion is one of high disappointment. One, it NEEDS and anchor building to hold down downtown. All the buildings are about the same height and look the same. Second, the architecture is very poor. There is no history in those buildings for a city as old as New Orleans. The buildings are simply ugly. I give the city a 5/10.

BG918 May 8th, 2003, 01:28 AM For a city the size of New Orleans and its location in the Sunbelt, also with all those energy companies, I'm really surprised the skyline isn't better. I have never been to NO but from pictures the skyline does not impress me at all. I generally like boxy skylines, but you can't have all boxes like NO has. Maybe there's some nice older buildings behind those boxes, if there are please post them. Otherwise I give it a 5.5/10, it's a cool city with a nice setting beside the Miss. River.

heckles July 14th, 2003, 08:39 PM I give the New Orleans skyline an 8/10. I just got back from there, and the skyline is very impressive in person. And the city below buildings is even better.

Evergrey August 15th, 2003, 04:05 PM New Orleans is not as big as most people think... it's fame is much bigger than its population... so its skyline is pretty good for its size... and 697 for the tallest is pretty good... unfortunately, most of New Orleans' skyscrapers are the ugliest of 1960's-80's Sunbelt architecture... it's really quite depressing... I give NO a 4
Aquarius November 20th, 2003, 07:27 PM boring and little original designs, too old buildings and little

SeeMacau November 21st, 2003, 06:52 AM Boring skyline, too many boxes

it looks nice
bron December 17th, 2003, 02:34 AM I know New Orleans's skyline isn't that great, but lets remeber that we're only grading tall buildings here, not buildings in general. New Orleans probably has some of the best architecture in the United States when you grade homes, museums, lowrise buildings, etc. Its a shame its taller buildings do not match the class of its smaller structures...which you can't see from a freeway or on a "postcard" shot of a city.
7.5 (I gave them two extra bonus points for the historical structures).:)
jtown, man December 20th, 2003, 05:43 PM When i think of New orleans...i think nasty. But then agian...im sure when people think of arkansas they think the same, so thats just the stereotypical veiw i have...sad i know. Anyways, i think the skyline proper is bad. It looks like if you take a picture today it will be confussed for a pic of NO back in like the 70's. But, they do have pretty good height. But, the real thing that captures my attention about NO is the density. You just dont find density like that in the southern US. So that gives it BIG props for me. 8/10
Service Lift Attendant December 27th, 2003, 06:34 PM It's unusual for a city of its size to have not one single good building over 20 storeys. This is a very ugly skyline. The "city" itself is a different item...the skyline is a dud.
ParraMan December 27th, 2003, 09:27 PM Seems to suffer the same problem as many US cities, ie lots of tall ones from the 60's/70's, and nothing noticeable since. I don't think it's really that bad, especially considering it's size, 6.5/10
Cheers

giergel September 13th, 2004, 10:39 PM The pictures look like they where taken in the seventies. Still a nice city but I don't like the scrapers. 7/10
SChristopher September 16th, 2004, 07:31 PM Alot of those pics arent very good, and New Orleans has alot of talls, I find it funny it is at 315 when cities 10 times crappier and smaller and even 3rd world cities are in the top 100....this list is kinda whack.
darad October 27th, 2004, 09:17 PM Looks way better in person and up close. The view from the GNO Bridge as you drive into the city is fantastic and from the Huey P Long Bridge there's a good distant view as well. There's older buildings mixed in, also the gigantic and world famous Superdome proudly sits downtown adding to the diversity of the CDB. The Plaza Tower is also an interesting design at 42 stories but it's not always captured properly in many downtown shots, so to attempt to capture as many buildings in one picture at a time makes them all seem shorter. While its skyline isn't sleek or glassy like Houston's or Atlanta's there's no place on earth quite like New Orleans.
hauntedheadnc October 28th, 2004, 12:25 AM Simply put, New Orleans isn't a skyscraper city. It's an historic city known for its grand mansions and historic districts. Who cares about skyscrapers when there's the French Quarter, the Warehouse District, and the Garden District? Who cares about skyscrapers when there are cemeteries of such aching beauty they'd put even those of Europe to shame? Who cares about skyscrapers when this is a city more known for the practice of magic?

DunceConfederacy December 12th, 2004, 10:15 PM I go to N.O. quite often, and the skyline is much more impressive in person. The city has a very busy downtown with much to do... 8/10. Big Easy baby!
David3820 December 12th, 2004, 10:22 PM It is too boring and boxy but ok for it's size I gues. 5/10
jr07 December 19th, 2004, 10:32 PM New Orleans has a great skyline. Its metropolitan area is a little over 1,300,000 people. The best view for the skyline would definately have to be on I-10 coming from Baton Rouge. The pictures above dont give it justice because it is definately pretty dense.
TexasStar December 31st, 2004, 08:29 AM New Orleans' skyline rocks!

i_am_hydrogen January 13th, 2005, 10:58 AM 7.0/10.0 -- I've been to New Orleans a few times, and I agree with some of the others that the skyline really looks a lot better than any of these pictures show. It grabs you and makes you pay attention to it. The financial district also has some pretty good density to it.
stockholm89 February 16th, 2005, 12:55 PM i was here in may and it was a amazing skyline if you go up in one of the skyscrapers
Sean in New Orleans April 9th, 2005, 03:12 AM I give my City a 9. It's an exciting Downtown to be in...one of the busier and more active in the United States, for sure. The senses are genuinely heightened when in Downtown New Orleans. And I find the mix of old and new rather beautiful. The pictures on this thread don't really capture New Orleans, in my opinion. With two more buildings being announced in the next 9 months that will be taller than our present tallest (697 feet)...those that knock the height will have little room for argument. A friend working on one of the new towers, says his will be close to 900 feet. Stay tuned...
MattSal April 9th, 2005, 03:17 AM I haven't rated New Orleans yet. :?
I give it a 7/10.

Where do you expect the people to live here work? Underground? Maybe you don't want to think about skyscrapers in New Orleans, but, it makes a difference to the 350,000 people who work in Downtown New Orleans every day! ;)
hauntedheadnc April 10th, 2005, 11:00 PM Actually, Sean, I was defending the city against all the snots who responded to blast New Orleans because it doesn't look like Manhattan on the Mississippi. I know that downtown New Orleans is divided much the way that European cities are divided into an Old Town with a gleaming skycraper district adjacent. The only other city I know of that so strongly demonstrates this characteristic is Winston-Salem, NC.
By the way... I gave New Orleans a 10, because I love historic cities on their own, but I love them even more when they're able to successfully mix the old and the new.

TwilightSpiral May 2nd, 2005, 02:18 PM One Shell Square (the tallest building in NO)- This is the most amazing building I've ever layed my eyes upon!!! :) Apart from this architectural marvel, I give the city a 7/10, it's population is not over a million by the way, it's about 450,000...about the size of Atlanta but not as impressive. The thing with New Orleans is that, as one user mentioned here, it is not supposed to be a Manhattan of the south, it's an old city with alot of history from different cultures, so it's skyline suits it just fine. I've only been there once but I was completely satisfied with it's layout and it's skyline - especially at night when the superdome has an ambient glow and the french quarter is alive and bustling.
Accura4Matalan May 2nd, 2005, 03:49 PM 7/10
Nouvellecosse June 17th, 2005, 01:23 PM Nice, it has a bit of that rough industrial look to it that I crave. Doesn't look too new and sterile like some southern cities, though its age doesn't give it as distinguished an apearance as most cities in the N.E. unfortunately. Height is impressive, especially considering the city's relatively small size. 8.5
JRQ June 26th, 2005, 01:32 AM hauntedhead basically summed up all of my thoughts....great city, great skyline.

Eddy Gordo July 18th, 2005, 07:55 PM New Orleans is entertaining(been there 7 times at least), but the skyline isn't as modern. Big Easy's skyline gets a 6.5 from me.
Sean in New Orleans July 24th, 2005, 10:29 AM It's about density and quality urban planning. Granted, I live in this City, just 2 miles from Downtown, but, there are few cities that have the dense life we enjoy here. Orleans Parish is 180 sq. miles. Do you all realize that only 1/3 of that is inhabited by humans?!? 2/3's of New Orleans' city limits are protected swamps that are uninhabited by humans. Does anyone realize that if all of New Orleans' City proper was inhabited from one end to the other without federal intervention, the population of New Orleans (w/o suburbs), would be close to 4 million people??? I don't think people truly realize the unique characteristics of New Orleans that are encompassed in a very small area....
eweezerinc July 24th, 2005, 01:15 PM I'll take everyone's word for it and assume that it probly looks great in person, I'm sure the height and density in person helps with the impression, but I still can't get over that there aren't more interesting or elaborate buildings architecturally. That's something to be worked on.

I really like the New Orleans skyline. Its not the biggest or best looking, but I think it looks great. It looks much better in person, and being in downtown and seeing the new and modern skyscrapers mixed in with the old mid rise buildings is great.
I also think the 750-800 foot tall Trump Tower will be a great new addition to the skyline.

I think I'll give it an 8.5 myself.

NOLA's skyline is so much more impressive in person, and I'm fortunate enough to have experienced it. There's variety, and even though it's a bit boxy, it's spread out at just the right level to keep its density without making the skyline seem too compact.

I absolutely agree, and I'm not just saying that because I live here.

royal rose1 January 15th, 2012, 08:55 PM Poor skyline! This city has been through a lot, many of those buildings were abandoned after Katrina. So it's good to see the city is still alive.

Sarcasticity January 15th, 2012, 11:00 PM How is the skyline poor? For a city that has less than 400K, a metro just above 1 MIL, and a city that suffered greatly a few years ago. I'd say it's quite decent and even impressive - although it's population has been on the decline so I kinda understand what you mean

I meant poor in the sense that I feel bad for the skyline, it's been through a lot. It's a great skyline!

royal rose1 May 10th, 2012, 07:13 AM To anyone who lives in or knows about New Orleans:
How is downtown and the office market since Katrina? I heard a bunch of buildings were abandoned afterwards. Are they fixed and all?

SlidellWeather May 11th, 2012, 12:15 PM @royal rose1...all of the major office buildings are opened and occupied. There are only 3 buildings that are vacant at this time. The World Trade Center which was vacant before the hurricane. The city owns this building, and will like demolish it in the near future. It's not conducive to modern office layouts. The Plaza Tower was also vacant before the hurricane and has been bought by a local investor. He plans on converting it to a residential building. The final property is 225 Barrone. This building was occupied before the hurricane, but has not reopened. It was bought by a TX company with plans to convert to residential. However, the recession has stalled those plans.
Of the approximately 10.6 million square feet of Class A and B office space available...82% is occupied as of the 4th Quarter of 2011. Not bad given the current state of the economy. GE Capital just signed a lease for 60,000 sq. feet of space in one office building, so that will help boost occupancy numbers this year.
